ORIOLES TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS

Any night is a good night for a win, but Senior night is always special. The Senior Orioles took care of business Friday night in a 44-28 win over Dunkerton. The Raiders were flagged for 12 penalties for a style of play that was anything but sportsmanlike. If you had the chance to witness the Dunkerton Coaching staff and their antics it was easy to understand why–but hey, this is a Springville paper right? Zach Scriver needed no time management skills Friday, as senior Nathaniel Randolph gave him all he needed, & Scriver used it to hit receivers for a total of 232 yards and 4 TD’s. Two of those to senior Caleb Anderson—Anderson, for the third consecutive game had an interception—actually 2, giving him 4 for the season. Scriver found Elias Nissen for 2 more scores in the air, & the sophomore standout scored 2 more on the ground as he rushed for 127 yards as well as picking up an interception for his stat column. All in all, Dunkerton turned the ball over 5 times, twice on the ground, each one recovered by stellar sophomores, Drew Hoskins & Tyler Stewart. Sophomore kicker Brian Allsup made it

back on the field for “other duties as assigned”, after being limited the last few weeks to kicking duty with his broken thumb—he returned to play corner & tallied 3 tackles on the night. Oh & as usual, he was near perfect in the PAT category, going 3 for 4. And it doesn’t end there, of his 8 kick offs, 5 were touchbacks, & he chipped in a 25 yard field goal to boot. Juniors Jake Hulett & Drake Coonrod played strong on both sides of the ball. Hulett had 3 catches for 35 yards on the offensive side & on defense he had 8 tackles, 2 of which were for a loss. Coonrod had 4 catches for 52 yards including one that was tipped, tipped again & bobbled for another 5 yards before he gained control & ran for 10 yards, taking a hit just shy of the goal line. It was a fitting end to a home season that certainly provided plenty of high lights & promise for a thrilling future. The Seniors, while small in number, provided much needed leadership & raised the bar for those looking to wear a uniform next year. The Orioles will have little time to enjoy their win. They’ll welcome back senior Brandon Mysak to the line up who has

been injured, & they’ll venture up to Lansing to face the 6-2 (5-1 in conference play) Hawks. Coach Martin, sporting a shiner & stitches from a contact drill with Jake Hulett, was happy to get the win. “I told the guys before the game, I think it’s been three years since Senior Night has seen a win” and the guys came through. “With the hard knocks we’ve gone through this year, when it came down to execution, we did 95% of what we had to do. JV WRAPS UP HOME STAND WITH A DOMINANT PERFORMANCE

“George Kaufman, you are having the game of your life”, screamed Coach Baumann. And indeed he was. Kaufman was all over the JV Raiders as he cleaned up tackles, rushed the QB and picked up a solo tackle of his own in a 16-0 win in the last JV home game of the 2011 season. And if it wasn’t Kaufman in their face, it was Trevor Hulett, or Jesse Robertson—or worse yet for the Raiders, all 3 of them. The Oriole JV team looked crisp, poised and flat out stronger than their visiting opponent. Like the varsity team, the JV has little time to enjoy the win, they need to prepare for the road trip north to face the Lansing Kee Hawks in their final game of the season.

Above left, Mikkel Jensen fights through a defender. Right, Kaufman, Hulett and Robertson triple team a defenseless Raider.

POST SEASON VOLLEYBALL IS HERE

While it seems as if we were just filling book bags and crossing off the school supply lists, it is the end of the quarter so keep an eye out for those grade reports. But along with it comes tournament time for the volleyball season. The Lady O’s finished 2-2 at the Tri-Rivers tournament last Saturday as they looked to tweak, strengthen and finalize what they hope will be a successful rotation for a team with high hopes. Coach Eastman took the girls to Midland High School Monday night for opening round action against a young Eagle squad that did manage to win a set off the O’s. Springville earned the W with scores of 25-14, 25-12, 23-25 and 25-23. It’s no surprise that the seniors led the team in stats and demeanor as Megan Hall had 15 kills, C.J. Fitzgerald 14 kills and Brittney Oxley 5. Holly Mikita and Emily Mysak kept the girls pumped up and in the game as the Orioles advanced and live to see another day—they’ll take on a Marquette Catholic team that finished the regular season ranked 7th in the state. That game will take place again in Wyoming, where hopefully we can drum up a few more fans—there were a whopping 43 people (to

Midland’s 40) on the Springville side Monday night—while I agree, Wyoming isn’t the most exciting place to be—on Tuesday, October 25 you have no excuse not to make it. Wear your new Booster shirt and bring your outside voice. The O’s play at 7pm sharp.

Clockwise from above left, Megan Hall earning a kill at North Linn on Saturday. C.J. Fitzgerald doing the same, Britt Oxley hitting on Monday at Midland. And directly below, Eastman corals the girls for a “teaching” moment, as she regroups them after their 3rd set loss at Midland Monday night.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. Camas, Washington is home to the Papermakers, a school of 1800 students. Their colors are red & black, they feature all traditional sports as well as tennis, gymnastics, soccer and swimming. Their football team of last season had 4 players receive scholarships to Division I schools. Their mascot, pictured to the left is named “The Mean Machine” - a paper roller. Camas is home to Georgia Pacific, who makes paper products, AND… has a plant in Monticello, Iowa. Hmm, what sounds better? The Monticello Panthers? Or the Monticello Papermakers?

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST: It’s the last week of great 8-man match-ups, make your picks for this weeks games: Midland at West Central Preston at Central City Clarksville at Tripoli Springville at Lansing Here’s what you do, choose your winners, & the point total of the Springville game. CRAZY THINGS I HEAR… Last Friday, while standing on the side line at the football game I heard the craziest thing. It was a pivotal 3rd and 9 down for our defense and Jake Hulett was slapping guys on the back, encouraging them, yelling to hold them—”Elias, plug the middle”, “Caleb, no one gets outside”, “Selby—Be big”. Come on Jake, you need a vision test? That’s like telling Coach Koeppen to smile. Selby is the biggest guy in the Tri-Rivers conference!
