CLUB VOLLEYBALL TEAMS ARE EVERYWHERE Each weekend Springville has a volleyball team or two competing somewhere, gaining experience and learning about competing at the next level. The 12U Oriole Volleyball Club team completed its winter season winning two games and dropping four at the Solon League on March 6. The eight-member team showed much improvement over the season, which started in January when the team played in the 13U division of the Springville League. "We wanted to give the girls a taste of what the level of volleyball would be in 7th grade so we had them play 'up' an age division in our Springville League," explained 12U coach Gretchen Eastman. "We then played at the 12U level in the Solon League to give the girls playing opportunities against teams their own

age." From January to early March, the 12U team practiced in the elementary gym twice a week. The girls worked primarily on serving, passing, and working to get three contacts before sending the ball across the net. "Serving and passing are the most fun-damental skills. We really focused on establishing those skills because if you can't pass or serve, you can't really set or spike. Of course, the girls always wanted to work on spiking!" commented Coach Eastman. "The girls made great improvements in their fundamentals. We still need to work on being consistent servers. All the girls can get the ball over the net. Now, they just need to be able to get that first serve over the net more consistently. When we served well in our games, we usually won." Coach Eastman would also like to thank Tiel Howard for her help with some practices, Claude Howard for his help coaching and being referee for the team, Megan Hall for helping the team at its league games, and Angie Gloeckner for helping with scorekeeper

duties at the Solon League. Finally, Coach Eastman would like to thank the girls' parents for their support at games and practices. "Without parents to transport their kids and pay for

the fees, equipment and food, these girls wouldn't get the chance to play. We really appreciate the parental support of our volleyball program at Springville," stated Coach Eastman. There are 5 Springville club teams in all and they’ve been representing us in great fashion, keep up the good work girls.

ORIOLE LEGENDS Oriole Pride features Springville alumni who still have ties to the community. This week we feature Springville graduate and 2nd grade teacher, Kim Wittenburg: Maiden name… Brown Class of ;1978 Activities participated in while in high school: Summer Softball, Fall Softball, Football Cheerleader, Basketball (9th grade only), Basketball Cheerleader, Golf, Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Musicals/Pit Band, Choir, Swing Choir (Show Choir), Drama/Plays, National Honor Society and Journalism/School paper. Favorite activity/sport while in high school: I loved spending time with my friends in all of the extracurricular activities! My favorite activities were band, softball, & golf! What is one of the craziest things you did while in high school? On a very rainy & muddy day, a friend of mine was driving 4 of us to golf practice in Central City. While taking the shortcut through Waubeek, her car got stuck in the mud up to its axles! We had to walk through the mud to get help and a ride. We were covered in mud! I don’t even remember how she got her car out of the mud! Did you have a nickname? Brownie College attended? University of Northern Iowa, was on the UNI golf team. Side note: When I went to UNI, Interstate 380 was being built and it took me 1 hour & 45 minutes to get to UNI from Springville…now it takes 1 hour. Major/degree earned; BA in Elementary Education Most influential teacher in high school and the subject they taught; Mr. Edelbrock, Band Teacher. Everyone called him “Mr. E.” What made that teacher so memorable? So many things come to mind! The thing that amazed me about Mr. Edelbrock was how talented and dedicated he was. For every home football game, he would have a new marching routine for the band that he designed. We would always have a pre-game show and a halftime show. He knew so much about music and could play many instruments. He always challenged me as a musician. He also took the time to get to know students and he really cared! Mr. E. had 2 sons who were in the band @ the University of Iowa. He would take our band to march in the U of I Homecoming Parade every year. Then the next day, he would take our band to the Field House to watch the Hawkeye band warm up. They always had awesome routines, especially the percussion section. After that, he would take our band to watch the Hawkeye FB game in Kinnick Stadium. The highlight was watching the Hawkeye Marching Band perform @ halftime! Mr. E. and his wife also had a band camp that they ran during the summers @ their home in the country near Iowa City. How many students were in your senior class? 55 If you were to write an autobiography - what would the title be? It’s a Good Life If you could have one superpower, what would it be? I would love to have the ability to create peace in the world and no more hurting for anyone! How did you meet Al? I met my husband, Al, through a mutual friend, Sandy Binley. Were you high school sweethearts? No, we met after graduating from college. Where was your first date? We went to a Star Trek movie @ the theater in Anamosa. How long have you been married? 26 years! Did your senior prom have a theme - if so what was it? I have no clue, but I remember dancing to the song “Stairway to Heaven”…it went on & on & on! I also remember that Senior Class “Wills” and Junior Class “Prophecies” were read @ prom. They were very funny! A quick word of wisdom for Springville students; Follow the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would want them to treat you! Do NOT gossip about or bully others because it can deeply hurt people more than you realize! Also, work hard to reach your goals, put forth effort, and never be afraid to dream big! You CAN do it! Please list the names & ages of your children; I have two children. Zach (2004 SHS graduate) is 25 years old, and Kalli (2009 SHS graduate) is 20 years old.

Thank You Brownie
