SOFTBALL SEASON OPENS UP ON THE ROAD The Lady O’s have just two seniors this year and as young as they are, Mt. Vernon’s Mustangs are younger. Springville opened up its 2012 campaign at Mt. Vernon Tuesday and fell in five, 10-0. The O’s mustered one hit on the evening by Sophomore Sidney Hopkins and C.J. Fitzgerald had a nice sacrifice bunt, but the girls couldn’t move the runners enough to break into the score column. BASEBALL OPENS UP AT CAL-WHEAT

First year varsity baseball Coach, Vince Abel traveled to Cala-mus Wednesday evening for the Oriole premier. It was a tight game through the fifth inning, the O’s dropped their first game of the season 14-4. Freshman Greg Pauly led Springville on the offensive side with 2 hits, a double and a single as well as a score, and senior Zach Scriver had an RBI single. The boys will look to even up their record on Thurs-day when they travel to Lone Tree. Friday night they have their home opener—great way to start your holiday week-end. Test out the concession food and spend a nice evening in the outdoors—cheering of course for the O’s.

Clockwise from the left: Zach Scriver at 2nd base; Kolton Markley on the mound; Coach Abel and Cody Blake; Greg Pauly sliding safely into 3rd; Coach Abel in between innings with Caleb Anderson, Tyler Stewart and Kolton Markley. Home opener Friday evening—JV kicks it of with the first pitch at 5:30!

Absolutely NO ONE answered this one correctly… The one, the only— Mrs. Jennifer Wyman.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST: No Weekly Picks this week, but congratulations to Joe Martin for winning last week’s

contest! We will return with a new competition in next week’s edition.

SCRIVER WINS TITANS QB CHALLENGE!

Soon to be Junior Quarterback, Sam Scriver, participated in the Cedar Rapids Titans QB challenge during half time festivities last Friday. The slinger won the competition and earned another shot to compete in June. Faced off against a CR Prairie competitor, it boiled down to Sam’s last throw. Needing to thread the needle on a 45 yard launch Scriver did just that, splitting the uprights and winning the competition. June 16th will be his next appearance—contact Joe Martin for ticket information and congratulations Sam! (Photo’s provided by Tim Scriver)

DID YOU NAME THIS “O”?

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. This week we feature the Braintree Wamps. Located in Braintree, Massachusetts, the school participates in typical sports as well as gymnastics, lacrosse and hockey. The Wamps, boys gymnastics team has repeated as conference champs the past two years. The Wamps nickname comes from Chief Sachem, aka Chief Wampatuck. The school is undergoing the addition of a sports complex featuring a junior Olympic size pool and a new hockey rink. They feature colors of blue and white and a store sporting sales of their school gear called, “The Wamp Stop”.

LOTS OF GOOD BYES TO PASS ON THIS MONTH

Another school year is wrapping up and with its end we find ourselves celebrating memories of the past and the excitement of what the future will bring. 24 Seniors graduate this year, teachers are retiring and Mr. O’Donnell is moving on. August will be here before we know it and when classes begin, Mr. O’Donnell will not be greeting Springville students for the first time since 1998 which is when he assumed his teaching role at the High School. However, it was 1996 when Coach O’Donnell began working with athletes, specifically the Junior High basketball and softball teams. It has been 16 years since Mr. O’Donnell first stepped foot on school grounds, probably about the time our Sophomores (now Juniors) were coming into the world. As most probably know, Brian is moving on to St. Pius X Elementary in Cedar Rapids where he will be the Principal. And so it is, one last time that we profile Brian O’Donnell: Was Springville your first teaching position or did you teach somewhere else first? My first teaching position was in Storm Lake at St. Mary's- I was also the head girls basketball coach. Where did you attend High School and College? LaSalle High School and Mount Mercy College (now University) When you entered college did you choose education right away? I did choose education right away— I had some great role models in my teachers and coaches and they inspired me to want to do the same! Can you share a funny coaching story? I'm sure my players and Coach Eastman have a lot more funny stories than I can remember- I did one time slip and fall in the mud right before a softball game and it was in front of my players. I think I claimed that I was pushed! As a kid, who were some of your favorite athletes and teams? Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish! Larry Bird, Dr. J, Mike Schmidt, Joe Montana and Bill Russell. If you were given the chance to choose one day in history and be able to travel back in time to experience it—what day would you choose and why? I would say from a historical standpoint the JFK assassination, the storming of the beaches at Normandy or the signing of the Declaration of Independence. From a fun standpoint I would say when Babe Ruth hit his 60th homerun or when Jackie Robinson first played for the Dodgers in 1947. As a teacher, coach and soon to be an administrator, is there a philosophy or belief you’ve let lead your “style” as you work with students and athletes? The Golden Rule. Also, I heard Coach Jim Valvano once say to do three things every day- spend some time in thought, be moved to tears and laugh as often as you can- if you do those things you've lived a full day. If you were to wrap up a book and give it as a graduation present to every Senior venturing off this year, what would you choose? Either Tuesdays with Morrie or Heaven is For Real. Both books make you really appreciate the people around us and the many blessings we have. Brian and his wife Jenny are parents of 4 year old Brady, 2 year old Blake and number 3 who will join them on June 21. Thanks for all you’ve given Springville Brian— St. Pius students and their families are getting a good one.

DID YOU KNOW? Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run on September 30, 1927 D-Day and the landing at Normandy was June 6, 1944 Jackie Robinson first played 2nd base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963 Jim Valvano passed away April 28, 1993 Morrie Schwartz passed away on November 4, 1995
