There are lots of high hopes for a successful season this fall & it all got started on Friday night in Wyoming, Iowa. First year Head Coach Joe Martin might have had the jitters, maybe the guys did too, but that didn’t prevent them from marching down the field on their first possession and scoring an easy six on the carries of junior, Drake Coonrod and sophomore Elias Nissen. Nissen ran for back to back first downs and Coonrod carried Springville down to the Eagle 2 yard line before Nissen ran it in for the first score of the 2011 season. Sophomore kicker Brian Allsup nailed what most thought was a good extra point but the officials ruled it no good and the O’s had a 6-0 lead. The defense looked strong as it forced an Eagle punt and the chain gang was overheard mumbling “this is going to be a long night”. Whether the Eagles caught up or the Orioles slowed down, it is hard to say, but Springville ended up falling to the Eagles 46-18 in an event that truly showed the potential of a young, hard working team who can definitely turn it on and make a play. Springville’s second TD came on a Zach Scriver pass who really had to thread the needle to hit a well defended Brandon Mysak in the end zone. That play alone shows the potential this senior duo show for some high flying heroics this fall. It also provided a segue to the next touchdown which was an over the shoulder, diving catch in the end zone by junior Jake Hulett. It is the same play kids practice all day in their back yards folks, and if you missed it, I venture to guess there are more to come. Other lessons learned on Friday include the fact that Brian Allsup may be listed at 5 foot something, but he has the leg of a big man - as all of his kicks were in the Eagle end zone. Selby Ballantyne creates holes in defensive lines and all Nissen and Coonrod need to do is follow the big guy. Nathaniel Randolph plays with more heart than “Rudy” and will be a joy to watch this season as he leads the line on each side of the ball, every game, every play. Tyler Stewart, a returning sophomore will continue to find his way to the ball carrier or quarter back that is dumb enough to run his way. Drew Hoskins, a sophomore, shows the energy of a veteran as you see and hear him every play, he is a leader in the making. Jake Hulett is still Jake Hulett although he’s a bigger Jake Hulett. He does it all, he can step up to the line, swing out as a tight end, block, run, catch… I was thinking I’d ask him to wear a camera out there next week too, he is simply amazing. Zach Scriver runs the offense, and with experience is only going to get stronger each week so as to keep the O’s game well balanced. Caleb Anderson, when healthy is going to be a big part of the game plan on both sides of the ball. On Friday, he quietly made two defensive plays that prevented scores. Just his presence is going to elevate the teams play. Brandon Mysak, a senior, is that player who can sneak behind the defense & jump up and down yelling for the ball. The kid finds his way to an open spot & when Scriver has the time to throw, Mysak will score lots of TD’s. The Oriole coaching staff was hoarse by the end of the first quar- ter on Friday. Their enthusiasm coupled with the play of these young guys has Friday’s this fall looking spectacular. They have their home opener this week when Tripoli comes to townthe Panthers feature colors of black and orange as well and they are coming off a huge upset as they handled the West Central Blue Devils last week 46-30. It’s Varsity only on Friday—7pm is kick off time at Allison Field. Be proud and be loud! Oh and Midland? We get them again for Homecoming! ORIOLE FOOTBALL SUFFERS FIRST ROAD LOSS AT MIDLAND

Ready or not, football season is here—but Springville fans are always ready, right?

Drew Hoskins, a sophomore, shows the energy of a veteran as

you see and hear him every play, he is a leader in the making.

The Oriole coaching staff was hoarse by the end of the first quar-ter on Friday. Their enthusiasm coupled with the play of these young guys has Friday’s this fall looking spectacular. WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST: High School football is in full swing, make your picks: Meskwaki at Midland Clarksville at West Central Lansing at Central City Tripoli at Springville Here’s what you do, choose your winners, and then pick the point total of the Springville game. Tie-breaker goes to the individual closest to the point total. Send your picks & name to [email protected] with “Weekly Picks” as your subject, & catch next weeks issue to see who won bragging rights. Congratulations to Springville’s Kim Starry for winning last weeks contest.

GOOD TO KNOW… There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick-name. The Watersmeet Nimrods call the Upper Peninsula of Michi-gan their home. Their fan base is called The Nimrod Nation. The school features colors of blue & gold and they compete in the Porcupine Mountain Conference. The name Nimrod has Biblical origins. In the book of Genesis, Nimrod is the son of Cush and is referred to as a mighty hunter. Webster's dictionary defines nimrod as a hunter. Sundance featured the 2005-06 boy’s basketball season, by filming eight, 30 minute episodes. And, USA Today highlighted them in a 2004 article. Not bad for a bunch of Nimrods!

JV? YOU SURE?

The Springville JV boys team had its home opener on Monday against the Midland Eagles & they dominated on both ends, at all times, from all perspectives. The boys showed their speed, their power and their potential, as they beat the visiting Eagles 56-14. Several of us were checking the program to make sure this was a JV game. Does the Scriver name ring a bell? Jordan? He graduated. Zach? No, he’s a senior. There is a sophomore, Sam Scriver and he is running the offense for the JV O’s. He led them to scores on the ground and in the air. Brian Allsup has the moves, Cody Blake has the size & Trevor Hulett is, well, he’s a Hulett— they each do their job and they put on a show doing it. You must make time in your schedule to come out and support these boys as they will not disappoint. Andrew Lorimer found his way through the Eagle’s offensive line and was on the QB all night long. Jesse Robertson is quick off the snap and darn near gets to the ball before the kid they are handing it off to does. The lanky sophomore has good size too. He got his first pick Monday night and was a shoe lace tackle shy of a return for a touch down. Kolton Markley took some snaps at QB and can play a tough

receiver as he made two catches under tight coverage for first downs. DJ Hotz, Brandon Noggle, Cody Bell, Ryan Menster & George Kaufman are all play makers in the waiting. Wyatt Dlouhy is the man in the middle, and if there was a way we could bottle his energy, we’d rule the free world. Mikkel Jensen had big carries on the offensive side and newcomer Greg Pauly caught a Scriver pass for a TD. And Tyler McDowell? The program I have doesn’t list his height and weight, so one can only guess—I’d simply list him as FAST. He burned the Eagles for 2 late touchdowns and there wasn’t a kid on that team who could catch him even with a head start. He is going to provide some high light tape to be sure. The future is looking pretty bright Oriole fans.

To the left, do not adjust your reading glasses, Tyler McDowell is ALWAYS blurry on film!

FRESH/SOPH VOLLEYBALL WINS

2 OF 3 Coach Claude Howard took the 9th and 10th grade team up to Alburnett Tuesday night for a quadrangular against Mt. Vernon, North Linn and Alburnett. The Lady O’s started slow and dropped their first match to the Mustangs but regrouped and defeated North Linn and the Alburnett Pirates. They head over to Marion on Thursday for a 5pm match while the JV will be in Alburnett at 6. Volleyball season is heating up—the Varsity get started on Saturday at the Midland Tournament.

Rachel Gloeckner & Heather Smyth go up for a block

CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES IN THE RAIDER INVITATIONAL Head Cross-Country Coach, Steve Pershing reported on the team’s performance Tuesday in Williambsburg. The cool wet weather was pretty good for fast times at the Raider Invitation at Williamsburg. Arden Betzer had an impressive win in a time of 15:19. Angie Hoogland placed 17th reducing her time by almost 2 minutes in 17:33. Whitney Smith and Shinichro Tatsumi both improved by over a minute. Austin Corum and Raymond Colony did not finish due to injuries. Many of the SCC middle school runners were in their first cross country competition and showed that the team's future is very bright. 7th graders Levi Flitsch and PJ Gorman led the boys team with 5th and 8th place finishes. Brady Barner, Carter Gillmore and Jacob Loehr finished 14, 15, 16, and Garrett Wolf and Noah Lamb finished 23rd and 24th out of 35 runners. While no official MS boys team scores were kept, the Springville-Central City boys unofficially finished 2nd out of 7 teams. The middle school girls did equally well. Amber Decker won the race, followed by Monica Cruise in12th, Sophia Wilson in 16th, and Izzie Betzer in 18th out of 32 runners. The Springville-Central City Cross Country team's next meet is Saturday September 10 in Monticello at 8:30 am.

SPRINGVILLE BOYS PLAY IN CLEAR CREEK JAMBOREE Coach Jeff Menster and the Springville Youth football team (wearing orange in photo below) traveled down to Tiffin on Saturday to play their part in the annual jamboree that kicks off the youth tackle season. The boys had two scrimmages, one against a Solon team & another against an Iowa City team. The games gave the boys a chance to break in the pads & get a feel for what the fall will bring. They will head down to Iowa City for their first game of the year on the 11th.

COACH MARTIN SEES LOTS OF POSITIVES While the Springville football team starts the season with a slash in the L column, first year Head Coach Joe Martin has a great deal to work with and be excited about. In terms of first game expectations I asked him how he thought the boys did. “At times we executed our game plan. Game tape and defensively we knew where they’d be”. I asked if he had any surprises that night, and he quickly responded, “Caleb Anderson. He hasn’t had much time to prepare. And Brian Allsup’s kicking”. I talked with Coach about this weeks practice and asked what he’d work on, “Conditioning. Our JV has to push the Varsity” and “we need to bounce back, this is just one game. We have to stay up”. The O’s are home on Friday, Tripoli Panthers come to town and game time is set for 7pm.

MIDDLE SCHOOL OPENS UP PLAY ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6
