Ernie Banks LADY O’S START TO GEL With two seniors, two juniors, two 8th graders & ten more in the grades inbetween, it’s fair to say that this season’s softball team is a bit young. And when you are young you are unpredictable. The Lady O’s played in a CR Jefferson tournament last Friday & in game 1, took on a Collins-Maxwell- Baxter team that to that point, had been ranked 9th in the state. Springville came to play & with a strong defense & just enough offense, they beat the Raiders 2-1. In game 2, the O’s lost a 9-2 lead & ended up falling to Calamus-Wheatland 11-9. On Saturday, the Orioles played in the Spartan Classic & opened with a tough first game against Highland, falling 5-2 in eight innings. Their second game of the day was against the hosting team Solon & it was a quick loss, 14-0. And so, with a conference match-up on Monday night against Central City, one wondered just which team would show up. No worries, the Lady O’s came away with 2 wins, both in 5 innings, as they beat the Wildcats 10-0 & 17-7. Springville is now 4-7 overall & 3-1 in conference play. Coach Zaruba & the girls will visit Starmont as they play in another Tri-Rivers double header against the Stars on Wednesday evening. ORIOLE BASEBALL The Springville baseball team currently sits at 0-7 and is looking for its first win. That chance will come on Thursday when the boys travel East on 151 for a game against Monticello. The Orioles dropped two games on Saturday in tourney action in Lisbon and dropped two against Maquoketa Valley on Monday night at home. The O’s are young with a 13 man roster that includes only one senior and two juniors. Coach O’Brien has plenty of spark in the guys on the field and we hope to see a “W” soon. The O’s are young with a 13 man roster that includes only one senior and two juniors. Coach O’Brien has plenty of spark in the guys on the field and we hope to see a “W” soon.
