China + Smart Grid

S l i

“Being in China right now, I am more convinced than ever that when historians look back at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, they will say that the most important thing to happen was not the Great Recession, but China's Green Leap Forward. Beijing officials clearly understand that the Energy Technology revolution is both a necessity and an opportunity, and they do not intend to miss it.”

09/09/2010 - Dr. Steven Chu, United States Secretary of Energy, and Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), donned virtual reality goggles to experience the future of clean-coal plant technology when they interacted with the EYESIM training simulator from Invensys Operations Management. Chu and Rockefeller were at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, W.Va., before participating in a University of Charleston Forum on the Future of Coal. Invensys is supplying its EYESIM and DYNSIM solutions to the NETL and the United States Department of Energy to facilitate development and training for clean-coal plant operations.

Hydrogen Combustion Combined Cycle (16MW, 42% efficiency), with Zero Emission

Results •Demonstrate combined cycle, equipped with a medium-size hydrogen-fed gas turbine and a condensation HRSG. Steam and heated water produced by HRSG are integrated into the cycle of the existing coal fired plant and investigate:

•availability, performances of hydrogen gas turbine, combustion and emission control;

Goals• Supply ample and affordable power to 2 million residents

of Portland

• Create a reliable solution that can be reused throughout the plants owned and operated by Portland General Electric

Challenges• Megawatt cost skyrockets when there is a power shortage

from the grid

• Find a way to have an efficient, optimized plant with less emissions

InFusion-SCADA Centralized Approach• Information is telemetered back to

SCADA

• InFusion-SCADA objects perform control actions and issue to the associated RTUs/Controllers

Advantages

• All actions are logged centrally

• All information is available to the system operator, and operator can manually intervene

• Automation algorithms can be integrated with other dispatching functions (i.e. Operator Tagging)

• Automation algorithms can be easily incorporated and tweaked over time as experience with applications grow

• Information is historized for long term storage & reporting & web portal (i.e. improvements can be recorded and reported)

• InFusion Object based design allows new functions to be added and maintained easily
