In today’s world there is a major focus upon improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact: more energy-efficient manufacturing processes; increased capacity on rail transportation networks with fewer trains; and appliances that use less energy and less water, and are built using fewer raw materials.

Invensys develops and applies advanced technologies that enable the world’s manufacturing and energy generating facilities, mainline and mass transit rail networks, and appliances to operate safely and efficiently. Across all three divisions and almost every industry, we measure variables, control processes, and enable our customers to optimise their operations, thereby empowering them to improve their performance.

• Our operations management technologies are in use in over 200,000 plants and around 180 countries. Invensys helps to generate 20% of the world’s electricity and 36% of its nuclear energy, to refine 17% of the world’s crude oil, and to produce 62% of the world’s liquefied natural gas.

• Our rail signalling technologies enable more than 100 rail and mass transit operators in over 30 countries to maximise freight and passenger capacity in a safe and cost-effective manner.

• Our appliance control technologies are used by the world’s top seven appliance manufacturers to produce more efficient units with innovative user interfaces.

Our strategy has remained broadly unchanged for five years, though we are agile in changing the way that we implement it to adapt to market conditions. As a Group, we have based our strategy upon five principles:

1. Being a thought leader when we have a seat at the table where customers make decisions by giving them a different point of view and solutions to enable their success.

2. Being a technology leader through the development of industry-leading technologies for our customers that enable them to improve their businesses and operations with excellence in service, engineering and delivery.

3. Being focussed on achieving higher margins by targeting faster-growing countries and market segments with a high return on operating capital employed. These include countries like China, India and Brazil and industries like nuclear power generation, rail infrastructure expansion in emerging markets, and mid- and high-end appliances.

4. Being global, diverse, open and agile in our approach, thinking and abilities so that we unlock the potential of our people, our large installed base, our technology, our long-term customer relationships and our customers’ need for global support.

5. Being a value-driven company by living the Invensys Values.

Each of our divisions applies these principles to its own strategy.

All this is supported by making bolt-on acquisitions that deliver new technologies or market access and by leveraging our global capabilities of research and development, global supply chain, continuous improvement, legal, human resources and finance across our divisions.

Case studiesChevron drives efficiency with mobile decision support Chevron is one of the world’s largest energy companies, with a global refining capacity of more than two million barrels of oil per day.

It wanted to improve refinery performance and reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and simplify compliance. Like many other companies, it was also eager to preserve the knowledge of workers approaching retirement.

Over half of the assets in a typical refinery are not electronically monitored and need

to have field operators performing equipment checks. Field operators have traditionally used pencils and clipboards and later entered the data into a spreadsheet. However, this is sometimes too late to make changes that could reduce equipment failures or environmental or safety incidents.

Chevron has found significant savings by using mobile workflow software and hand held devices powered by Windows Mobile® software to deliver decision support to field workers. The solution used our Wonderware IntelaTrac mobile workforce management and decision support system. The IntelaTrac system is an enterprise software solution bringing intelligent workflow, automated asset tracking and data collection to field operators, which integrates factory floor data with corporate business systems.

Data entered by operators is transmitted into process historian systems when the device is docked in a cradle. The IntelaTrac system data is combined with real-time process data from the control systems and viewed by operators and engineers.

Chevron tested the IntelaTrac system at one refinery, and then deployed the solution to its eight wholly-owned refineries over an 18-month period. With the IntelaTrac system, Chevron has increased refinery operating reliability, reduced maintenance costs, and improved safety and environmental compliance.

Chevron estimates that these process improvements will save US$3-5 million annually. The IntelaTrac system also helps to capture knowledge before workers retire and speeds new workers’ education through mobile learning.

To meet their goal and respond to the pressures of a changing global economy, Petro Rabigh wanted a system that would unite planning, scheduling, operations management, production accounting and other tasks.

Our InFusion Enterprise Control System (ECS) was a natural fit. Designed on open, industry-standard technologies, our solution would be able to synchronise information from multiple systems and applications. It was also proven to unite the systems and applications within a single environment, providing consolidated and contextualised real-time data.

Our solution now covers the entire complex of 23 plants. Best-in-class applications from several vendors, including SAP, have been integrated through the InFusion ECS. Setup, configuration and testing of the applications and key performance indicators went smoothly, due to the flexibility of the InFusion environment.

The enterprise receives continuous, accurate performance feedback, which is driving consistent execution of the business processes. Operators view and control all the applications within the performance management system via a web-based interface.

We also provided Duke Power with our Wonderware InTouch Human-Machine Interface (HMI) software. Previously, operators viewed the control system through a hard panel interface, but the new system’s graphical user interface provides much more information. The software enables operators to execute start-up and valve tests more efficiently, and the new system automatically runs specific tests and reports on the results.

Duke Power is now among the small group of nuclear plant operators effectively using digital turbine controls, although all are considering doing so as their analogue controls continue to age.

Invensys Operations Management supports the growth of a Saudi refinery and petrochemical complexThe PetroRabigh complex in Saudi Arabia is one of the largest fully integrated oil refinery and petrochemical production facilities in the region, and the largest integrated refinery in the world built as a single project.

When management decided to expand its facilities, they set a goal of commissioning the plants with integrated operations management and business systems.

The objective was to implement a plant information management system fully integrated with SAP and other applications, and to improve performance management by tightly integrating control systems with production and corporate business functions. At the same time, Petro Rabigh wanted to maintain system safety and to optimise production quantity and quality at a competitive cost.

Duke Power upgrades nuclear power station turbine with our digital control system Duke Power operates three nuclear power stations and has provided power to the Carolinas for a century. Oconee, Duke Power’s nuclear station in South Carolina, has a capacity of 2,538MW.

Safety and reliability are the top concerns of nuclear plants. Over 30 years ago, when most of the United States’ nuclear plants were commissioned, analogue control systems were the state of the art and ensured reliability. However, analogue systems present constraints: if a single component fails, the entire system shuts down. This adds risk and costs in downtime.

Marlon Dempsey, Instruments and Controls Engineer, said, “We found that our analogue turbine control system was one of the top three causes of trips and transients, primarily because its components presented a single point of failure. We knew that introducing more redundancy at key points would enhance reliability considerably and found that digital technology could provide that redundancy while at the same time reducing the cost of downtime.”

Duke Power began implementing our Triconex fault-tolerant safety system. Based on Triple-Modular Redundant architecture, it uses three isolated, parallel-control systems and extensive diagnostics. The system uses ‘two-out-of-three’ voting to provide high-integrity, error-free, uninterrupted process operation without a single point of failure.

Case studiesInvensys Rail wins milestone Brazilian Metro contractIn October 2009, Invensys Rail, the Brazilian engineering company Montagens e Projetos Especiais (MPE), and the Spanish telecoms specialists Infoglobal signed a milestone £255 million contract to upgrade the signalling and Automatic Train Control (ATC) system on three lines of São Paulo’s rapidly developing metropolitan rail system.

Invensys Rail will install its Sirius™ Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system on all three lines and their trains along with WESTRACE® interlockings, point machines and LED signals, totalling a 60% share within the consortium.

To minimise disruption during the upgrade, the new system will be installed and designed to operate alongside the existing signalling system until the project is completed. This approach has been successfully used by Invensys Rail around the world and has proved highly successful in delivering complex projects on time and on budget with the minimum disruption to passengers.

This contract marks Invensys Rail’s biggest success to date in Brazil, and will provide a platform for expansion in this important and growing market.

The three lines are owned and operated by Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM). Line 8 is 35km long with 20 stations, Line 10 is 37km with 15 stations and Line 11 is 37km long with 12 stations. In total, 136 trains and maintenance vehicles operate on the three lines to transport over one million passengers per working day.

Invensys Rail enables new trains to enter passenger service on the Metropolitan LineOver the past two years, Invensys Rail has been engaged in an extensive programme of signalling upgrades on the Sub-Surface Lines for London Underground.

In a programme lasting three years, the project will see the replacement of track circuits at 34 locations, which will ultimately allow London Underground’s new S-Stock trains to enter passenger service on the Metropolitan Line in 2010, followed by the Hammersmith and City, Circle and District lines.

Invensys Rail recently successfully commissioned the twentieth and final site on the Metropolitan Line, which paves the way for the new trains to commence a period of testing along the full length of the Metropolitan Line.

The scope of our work includes all the design, approvals, installation, testing and commissioning works. In the last 16 months alone, the team has completed 18 separate commissionings without a single overrun.

With this work on the Metropolitan Line now complete, the team is embarking on a series of 14 commissionings on the District Line, with the programme due to be fully completed in November 2010.

Invensys Rail plays key role in infrastructure for the 2010 Winter OlympicsInvensys Rail designed, installed and commissioned the Integrated Control and Communication System (ICCS) for the Canada Line Rapid Transit Project in Vancouver.

The line links downtown Vancouver with Richmond and the airport, and played a key part in the transport infrastructure for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

At the heart of the ICCS was our SystematICS® control system. This managed the integration of each of the power, tunnel ventilation and communications sub-systems, which come together in a single operator interface. From this point, the operator controlled and monitored these functions for the entire rail network.

Systems integrated include:

• traction power supply• tunnel ventilation• electrical and mechanical monitoring• CCTV • public address• passenger information display• passenger counting• voice communications• passenger alarm• fibre optic transmission systems

Invensys Rail installs ERTMS on Spain’s high-speed network Invensys Rail is involved in all ongoing high-speed rail projects in Spain. We have successfully commissioned ERTMS Level 1 on Spain’s high-speed line between Malaga and Cordoba. The line is now in commercial service with trains operating at speeds in excess of 300 km/hour. Tests are currently underway for ERTMS Level 2 which, when commissioned, will allow trains to operate at speeds of up to 350 km/hour.

The scope of our work included the installation of lineside electrical units (LEUs) for ERTMS Level 1 operation and radio block centres for ERTMS Level 2 operation. We have also installed the Spanish national automatic train protection system and equipped the line’s control centre at Antequera with centralised traffic and LEU controllers.

The complexity of this project led to Invensys Rail developing a powerful simulator, which provided the simulation and testing environment for ERTMS. ERTMS systems require significant testing and validation of all application data. Our simulator saved many hours of manual checking and on-site testing.

We are now employing our expertise in ERTMS and high-speed rail in winning projects around the world, such as our contract in Turkey. Many countries are considering investing in environmentally favourable high-speed rail for inter-city passenger transportation in direct competition to air travel.

Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH

Case studiesPressure sensors for BSHBSH (Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH) is one of the world’s leading companies in the home appliance industry.

BSH has been focussed on improving energy efficiency for many years. Its stated aim is to set the standard in the sector with innovative product solutions that reduce resource consumption and help to combat climate change.

BSH’s research has revealed that an appliance’s environmental impact is largely determined by its performance during the usage phase: 90% of its environmental impact occurs during this stage of a product’s lifecycle. With this in mind, BSH was seeking an energy-efficient and water-saving solution to replace the existing generation of pressure switches used in its washing machines. The new solution needed to optimise the use of water during the wash cycle, which in turn would reduce the amount of energy the appliance used.

Invensys Controls deployed its engineering expertise to develop a replacement for the pressure switch — the F3 Linear pressure sensor. The F3 uses a combination of mechanical technology and electronics. A key competitive advantage of the new pressure sensor is a special system of double calibration, offering strong immunity from all external magnetic field interference.

Touch controls for Sub-Zero Sub-Zero, a leading manufacturer of premium residential refrigerators and freezers, has a reputation for providing their customers with innovative and functional designs that set industry standards. When Sub-Zero needed a futuristic control panel for their new built-in refrigerator, Invensys Controls delivered an elegant solution that exceeded their expectations.

Our engineers designed a sophisticated touch control with a crystal clear panel featuring capacitive touch technology – an industry first.

Behind the panel, we engineered touch control features that reinforce Sub-Zero’s reputation for quality and innovation. These features include precise water flow management for consistent ice cube size and filtration monitoring, quieter operation of water and ice dispensing, improved energy management and total system control of peripheral accessories.

To reinforce the Sub-Zero consumer experience further, we developed integrated self-diagnostic and total monitoring systems, so customers know when to change filters or make other adjustments to keep their food fresh.

Just as Sub-Zero has redefined built-in refrigeration, Invensys Controls is dedicated to designing, engineering and manufacturing innovative control solutions for its business partners around the globe.

When developing the groundbreaking Ecocool range, Frigoglass worked with Invensys Controls to ensure that the ICM control system was best in class. The control system is critically important in ensuring the efficient operation and regulation of any refrigeration solution.

From the outset the Frigoglass and Invensys Controls technical teams worked closely to specify, develop and test the solution. Invensys Controls used its engineering expertise to successfully deliver a customised version of its class- leading ID971 control.

The solution provided by Invensys Controls has delivered considerable benefits to Frigoglass. The optimised temperature regulation provided by the customised ID971 reduces energy consumption by 10% and extends the operating life of the compressor by 10%. The Invensys Controls solution also reduces the servicing and maintenance overheads of the Ecocool product range.

Through in-house testing, Invensys Controls estimates that in comparison to the old pressure switch the F3 can save end users around two litres of water per washing cycle and up to 70W of energy. With over 3,000 washing cycles in an average product lifetime, this can lead to potential energy savings of over 200,000W and water savings of 6,000 litres1.

These savings are testament to Invensys Controls’ commitment to developing energy-efficient solutions that benefit households and end users.

Controls for FrigoglassFrigoglass is the world’s leading manufacturer of commercial refrigeration equipment known as ice cold merchandisers (ICMs). ICMs are the cabinets and displays used by beverage companies to chill drinks and attract customers in retail locations. Frigoglass has operations in 15 countries across four continents. The company’s global customer base includes Coca-Cola, Heineken and Nestlé.

Over the last few years Frigoglass has worked closely with its key customers on the increasingly important requirement for energy-efficient ICM solutions. Energy efficiency is at the core of the company’s business, and it has focussed on delivering ICMs that have the lowest possible impact on the environment. As a result of this commitment, in 2009 Frigoglass was able to launch Ecocool™, the first complete product range of environmentally friendly ICMs.
