The Missouri EngineerWinter 2020 Issue

The official publication of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, whose mission is to promote the ethical and competent practice of engineering.

Our Young Engineers Committee, led by Charles Loughman, is rolling out a State Society Mentorship Program and Approach as an opportunity for mentors and mentees, alike. You may not realize but the Young Engineers Committee was charged in July to consider and develop an opportunity such as this based on their feedback among young engineers at the Annual Meeting in June. The Program was modified from the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers and a draft was presented to the Board of Directors on January 18 by Charles.

The proposal opens up the mentoring opportunities to members and non-members as a valuable tool for recruiting for the Society.

It is a valuable approach to not only mentor other engineers but introduce them to NSPE and Professional Engineering.

I would encourage those of us who have developed some positive experiences in our career, wisdom and best practices might want to consider taking on a mentee and sharing with them as their career is beginning. It is a great opportunity to understand tomorrow’s members as well as a rewarding experience to network with early career engineers. The time commitment can be made to be accommodating to the mentor’s schedule.

The roll out will officially begin as we near the Annual Meeting, but it will be helpful to have some interested mentors positioned for pairing up with mentees when the Young Engineers Committee goes “live”. Please contact the MSPE office with your interest and you will be put in touch with the next step.

The advent of February brings on the celebrations across the state for Engineers. No longer restricted to the traditional week, Engineers Week spans the entire month in many of our Chapters due to competing events in other organizations. This is a big positive for engineers and gives more opportunity for MSPE to compete for membership.

Some of the events so far planned for the month of February include:

•Western Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition on February 1•Ozark Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition on February 2.•St. Louis Chapter Engineers Week Reception and Awards Program on February 7.•MSPE Winter P.E. Ceremony at the Missouri State Capitol on February 7.•St. Louis Engineering Center Luncheon Event on February 18.•Western Chapter (w/KSPE Eastern Chapter) Engineers Week Celebration on February 21.

“Like many Professional Engineers, my early career required a PE for advancement and that was the guiding principal. However, I was fortunate to have gotten involved with NSPE prior to becoming a PE which allowed me to gain a better

appreciation for the importance of licensure and what it represents.”-Bob Becnel, P.E., F.NSPE, MSPE President, 2019-2020

****Serious planning is underway for the Annual Meeting that will be held in Columbia this year on June 20. Our Chair is Mitch Gibler and Alison Connell of BHL is providing her magic to pull the event’s logistics together for MPSE. The Annual Meeting will be located at Stoney Creek Hotel & Conference Center which is just off the campus. We will be partnering with the University of Missouri College Of Engineering to help with some of the program sessions. Initial discussions proposed by the School include some very dynamic and timely topics. A tour of the School’s lab facilities is also being considered to showcase some of current research being worked on in the University.

The Annual Meeting is our premier funding raising and membership event of the year. We hope you find some time in your busy schedule this summer to stop and see what it is all about if you haven’t attended before. With Alison’s help, we will be presenting the specific program topics and social aspects of the Annual Meeting in the subsequent issue of the

MSPE Members,

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a great holiday season. We are very excited as MSPE enters a new decade. We want to thank you for your continued support that enables MSPE to operate efficiently for you.

A new year brings a new legislative session in our state capitol. The first day of session was January 8 and MSPE is already tracking dozens of bills that could impact Licensed Professional Engineers and industries we care about. Keep an eye out for our legislative email updates we send to the membership each week. If you are not receiving these, please let us know by emailing Blake Murray at [email protected]. In addition to the work on the ground with MSPE Contract Lobbyist Mark Rhodes, our Government Relations Committee is meeting regularly to access session activity. Our

Executive Director Message

2020 MSPE Capitol Day is February 11, so please plan to attend. There is no cost for this event and it’s a great way to represent MSPE and the industry. The more people we have is all the better for our show of strength. Last month we unveiled MSPE’s new Annual Partner Sponsorship Program. The new program combines and streamlines the historic Sustaining Organization and Annual Convention Sponsorship Programs. Visit our MSPE website’s sponsor tab for more information on how to become a Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Friend Partner of MSPE for calendar year 2020. Thanks to all the firms that already signed up! These funds go directly to our bottom line.

Looking ahead to our calendar, E-Week and MATHCOUNTS is just around the corner with our chapters planning multiple ways to advocate the profession and give back.

Our 2020 MSPE Convention, set for June 15-17 in Columbia. Please keep a look out for the schedule and registration information as it becomes available this spring.

If you have any ideas, questions or constructive feedback, do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Take care and thank you for your support,

-Travis Lowe MSPE Executive Director

St. Louis Chapter NewsNovember Monthly Luncheon

On November 12th the St. Louis Chapter, in cooperation with the American Society of Civil Engineers, hosted Mr. Jason Peterein, P.E., at the monthly luncheon. Mr. Peterein discussed the St. Louis Area’s MS4 Permit Strategy and Stormwater Management Plan. He touched upon the region’s environmental

regulatory compliance obligations and outlined the success the region has had in meeting these requirements and the role Engineers play in that effort. Hearing the discussion from Mr. Peterein, a Program Manager at the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District, provided yet another example

of how participation in the St. Louis Chapter of MSPE can help you stay current and relevant as an Engineer. You can find more about this topic at:
