HOME&LIFEBeing at or finding a ‘home’ is perhaps the most cherished notion people carry with them: it means far more emotionally than the dry definition of ‘one’s place of residence’. ‘To be home’ is an emotional state where you feel comfortable and accepted as you are, whether that be by others or by yourself. There is a sense of freedom that comes with ‘being at home’: freedom to be yourself, to create, to rest. To be ‘at home in one’s own skin’ is a delightful feeling of liking oneself regardless of where you are or what circumstances you find yourself in. Paul Young’s version of the song ‘Wherever I
Where is Your Home?

Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)’ speaks to the notion that one’s home is really within oneself and we carry it with us wherever we go. ‘Home is where the heart is’ links us to the notion that wherever we love and feel loved, that is our home. ‘Make yourself at home’ means to ‘help yourself, take your shoes off, relax’. When people are killed away from their own country, families often to go great expense to ‘bring them home’. There are even posters of our beautiful earth with the word ‘home’ underneath. So home can be as big as a planet, or as small as your favourite pub or corner of the library. In these times when home ownership is out of reach for many, it can be heartening to think of the fact that we can all have a ‘home’ of our own.

Sanity Saving Shopping Tips...Shop Early in the Season...This is when the selection is at its best. Seasons in retail are always ahead of the temperature outside. Women are often disappointed when looking for a sundress or shorts in July. Fall Season begins for retail after the 4th of July typically.. And a very popular new addition to retail is cruise/resort which begins in Nov/ Dec… So shop for your must- have pieces ahead while the going is good. Are You a Sale Shopper? If you love skimming the clearance racks use it as a last chance to find a fun addition to your wardrobe. A little extra. It is not likely that you will find a must-have item in your size. Remember there may be a sizing issue or hard to match item if it is on a sale rack. A bargain is only a bargain if it doesn’t sit in your closet. Not Fond of Crowds?Try booking a personal shopping apt with us at KC’s Boutique where we can come in a bit early or plan to give you personal attention. This is quite and enjoyable experience if you have just lost or gained weight and need to get some important pieces in your wardrobe. There is no cost to this service, so if you’re intentional in completing your wardrobe...talk to the staff and work out a time. Or it is often a bit quieter first thing in the morning or around 4pm when people are at home starting their dinners.Shop Your Favourite StoresConsistently shop at a few of your favourite stores. The owners of the boutiques or sales staff will get to know what you like. They may even call you when they know there is a particular brand that fits you well so you won’t miss out at the beginning of a shipment. Build a relationship with these stores and you will find you will have an exquisite go to wardrobe.Plan for a Big EventDon’t leave things to the last minute. You will end up purchasing a make do outfit for that special occasion. Don’t you want to look and feel your personal best?
ExperimentTry things on you aren’t sure about if you trust your favourite store to advise you on fit and colours they have experience in. We often hear … “I would never have looked at that on the rack and I love it..”Expect AlterationsWe are all a little different in in our shapes... Don’t expect a standard fit to work every time. Customize clothes to fit your body.Lastly Get Over Size ObsessionIt is very difficult to guage sizing of items. Ask for a clerks advice on fit consider the fabrics and if designer is made in U.K. or Canada or China... It may affect the size.Come visit our store today!

Located at Maple Bay Marina, 15 minutes from Duncan. 6145 Genoa Bay Road, Duncan BC
The 21st Annual Maple Bay Marina Wooden Boat Festival is a West Coast maritime event where owners of wooden boats are invited to an informal gathering to show off their boats. It also gives the public an opportunity to view classic boats and meet others that appreciate these wooden beauties.
Wooden boats have a long history and tradition on the West Coast and Vancouver Island. The people who dedicate their time and hard work to keep them in shape, build them, or restore them tie us to our maritime heritage. Maple Bay Marina continues to celebrate these remarkable vessels and the people whose passion keeps them afloat.

Hitting the Open Road
“...before you roll down the windows, cue the playlists and hit the highway, take some time to prepare and
anticipate.”
Since the advent of motorized vehicles the idea of ‘hitting the open road’, escaping from everyday cares and having a grand adventure has been part of popular culture. The idea that romantic or personal fulfillment and familial harmony are just a drive away has been scrutinized, celebrated and ‘lampooned’ in road trip films like ‘Easy Rider’, Thelma and Louise’, ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, ‘Sideways’ and ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’. American writers Jack Kerouac (“On the Road”), William Least Heat-Moon (“Blue Highways”) and Walt Whitman (“Song of the Open Road”) have elevated the road trip from a simple drive down the highway to a soul-seeking journey. Yet the question remains: does the ‘open road’ really exist outside of our imaginations? The English definition of ‘open road’ is ‘a road or highway allowing easy travel, especially one outside an urban area where progress is unimpeded’. Given the realities of ever-growing
traffic congestion and summer construction, that ‘open road’ can remain elusive. And without at least a little planning, road trips can go horribly wrong: hotels can be booked, campgrounds full, children bored, and traffic thick, making your seemingly impulsive jaunt a little more burdensome that you had hoped. So before you roll down the windows,
cue the playlists and hit the highway, take some time to prepare and anticipate. There are plenty of websites with great ideas on how to make your travels as enjoyable and smooth as possible. Planning your trip may not be as romantic as
simply grabbing the keys and heading out the door to the great unknown, but it may spare you a lot of grief later. And if the idea of spending a week or two in a small space with cranky children or a carsick dog is too much for you, simply roll down the windows, cue the playlists and head to the nearest video store for some vicarious road trip enjoyment!

JOKE of the Month
C At about 3AM, I was drunk as a skunk. I came home just in time to hear the cuckoo clock cuckoo three times. Quickly coming up with a plan, I cuckooed nine more times, hoping my wife would think it was midnight. I was very proud of myself.
The next day, my wife asked what time I got home, and I replied, “Midnight, just like I said.”
She said that was good, and for some reason she said we needed a new cuckoo clock. When I asked why, she answered, “Last night when it cuckooed midnight, it cuckooed three times, said ‘Shit!’, cuckooed four more times, farted, cuckooed three times, cleared its throat, cuckooed two more times and then started giggling.”
The Inaugural Cowichan Blues Fest is proud to present ‘David Gogo’ at the new Duncan Showroom - downstairs on May 7. The Showroom boasts a great dance floor so you can boogie the night away as Gogo belts out the tunes starting at 9 pm. Blackfish will open the evening at 8 pm. They are described as ‘a five-piece high-energy dance band that does Blues-based covers and originals with great vocals, slide guitar and smokin’ harmonica’. Closing the evening from 11 pm on will be Thor and the Thundercats. $20 for David Gogo, $10 for opener $10 for closing act or $30 for the whole night! FMI 250.748.7246

Vigneti Zanatta has been making wine commercially in the Cowichan Valley since 1990. Initially a father and daughter team, the winery and vineyards are now run by Loretta Zanatta and her husband Jim Moody. The Zanatta farm consists of 120 acres nestled in the hills of Glenora just 4km south of the city of Duncan. The vineyards expand 25 acres of exceptional south sloping hills. All of the Zanatta wines are made using estate grown grapes. Zanatta’s specialty is sparkling wine of which they produce 2 white, a rose’ and a red sparkling wine all made in the classical method. As well the winery produces a number of white still wines, as well as Pinot Nero being the red. The original Zanatta home is a 1902 farmhouse which has been converted into a tasting room and the Vinoteca restaurant where you can sample all of the Zanatta wines. This is a quaint get away with alfresco dining on the wrap around veranda as well as indoor dining next to a large terrazzo fireplace. An Italian style bocce court awaits the more athletic, or competitive, visitors while a stroll through the picturesque gardens of vines and heritage trees may appeal to the more contemplative visitor. Come visit us today!

WE all have our favourite things we love about the island. For one, of course, it ain’t the mainland…. But in all seriousness did you know that Vancouver Island is home to many wineries, craft breweries and distilleries? For example, whether you are in Campbell River, Comox, Nanaimo, Cowichan or Victoria you can find one or more local artisan beer, wine and spirit producers. For example, to name a few, we have 40 knots Vineyard & EstateWinery (Comox) and Zanatta Vineyards & Winery (Duncan), Red Arrow (Brewing Duncan), Arbutus Distillery (Nanaimo) and Wolf Brewing Company (Nanimo). These businesses have products for sale at the point of origin but they also sell them throughout the region. All of these local businesses, of course, want you to know about their products and to seek them out. But it really is much more than that. These particular businesses have created something worthy of experiencing and they want you to visit! So I’m not simply talking about merely consuming their products but about participating in what they have built. Meet the owners and the local people working hard to create something good and something to be proud of. Get out and take a drive to these distilleries, breweries, and vintners. The experience of driving, for example to Zanatta winery is similar to if you were in Italy and you took a turn down a country road only to make an incredible discovery of a winery you didn’t even know was there. In the case of
40-Knots it’s the excitement of exploration of the Comox valley, taking in the view of the vineyards, and going in for a tasting and learning about their history. For Wolf Brewing company you can actually see this local brewery come together. In a few years you will be able to show people your “before” pictures and say “I remember when they built this” The Arbutus distillery, on Boxwood Rd Nanaimo, is an incredible building with equipment and
products (vodka, gin and absinthe) to match. All of these businesses offer tours, product samples, and sales, and are always welcoming, happy to see you and to chat with you about their labour of
love. Simon Says do something new. Take your visiting family and friends around and show them what our incredible corner of the world has to offer. Many people have pre-conceived notions of what our local communities are all about but have they spent the day touring our local breweries, wineries or distilleries? I bet not. So it really is up to all of us to show people what we have here. Take a break from your routine and go support your local producers. It really means the world to them and you will have your eyes, and tastebuds, opened to the passion and enthusiasm shared by people who have chosen to call this island paradise home, who are producing world class products, and who often toil in solitude. The reward is when people like you, whether you are a local or a visitor, stop in and say hello.
