Debt is a major contributor to stress. There is a direct correlation between the epic rise in anti-depressant pre-scriptions and the percentage of Canadians who find themselves overwhelmed with debt. This percentage has grown at an alarming rate over the past three de-cades. It is now estimated that an astounding thirty-five percent of Canadians are in Credit Crisis. Credit Crisis includes the obvious numbers of us who are failing to make ends meet every month and fall behind on bills. It also includes the less than obvious who occasionally will borrow on their Master Card to make the Visa pay-ment and the next month may borrow on their line of credit to pay their credit card payments. These people may not even realise they are in Credit Crisis, as the op-timist in them tells them that in six months, or maybe a year, they will somehow turn their cash flow around and get their financial feet underneath them again. Read the fine print on your credit card statements and you will find that if you are making minimum monthly payments, you will be in debt for the rest of your life.

It’s not an accident, it’s designed that way. Banks and Credit Card companies only make money if you are in debt to them. Banks and Credit Card companies seduced us to use credit cards, even though we may have cash for our purchases, by offering incentives. These include discounts on merchandise if purchased with credit, air miles, bonus points, etc. Their goal is to have use credit until you reach a point that we are only able to make the minimum payments to keep our cards current and protect that all important credit rating. This is a carefully laid trap that many of us fall into. These people feel trapped, and they should. Short of winning the lottery or receiving a large in-heritance, they will literally not outlive their debt. This is where the stress comes in.

People awake at two in the morning, wondering how they will meet their financial commitments, are losing sleep. This affects their functions at work and their pro-ductivity may be affected, not unnoticed by the boss.

Collection agencies are unmerciful and relentless in their pursuit of people behind on their payments. These calls are demeaning and the debtor begins to feel like a failure, hopeless, stressed out.

Stress leads to anxiety, anxiety can lead to depres-sion and depression can lead to suicide.

Debtors should explore all solutions available to them. There is an alternative to Bankruptcy that allows a debtor to collectively make an offer to all unsecured creditors to pay a fraction of their debt, usually around twenty to twenty-five cents on the dollar, in the form of a low monthly payment, at ZERO percent interest over a specific period of time. This is called a Consumer Proposal. It is a formal process which, once accepted, is binding on all par-ties. These are accepted by creditors almost all the time and are much preferred to Bankruptcy.

It is advisable to use a professional Debt Con-sultant to assess your circumstances and ex-plore your options.

Just as a bright red umbrella brightens a grey rainy day and a blank wall comes alive with art, the 8th annual Under the Red Umbrella Artwalk will transform Downtown Duncan shops and restaurants into art galleries for a very special evening downtown! On Thursday, October 15th from 5:30 - 9pm, participating downtown businesses will adorn their shops with a red umbrella as an invitation to visit that evening’s “pop-up gallery” within, as local businesses team up to showcase the work of the many talented artists that call the Cowichan Valley home. Painters, sculptors, writers, silver-smiths, seamstresses, musicians, jewelers, graph-ic artists – you are invited to support these local artists and Downtown Duncan merchants by join-ing in the ambience of this unique event.

In early October, maps will be available at par-ticipating downtown shops with information about the artist they will be displaying. For more information visit the Duncan BIA website at downtownduncan.ca or call the Dbia office at 250.715.1700.

After 35 years of marriage, a married couple came for counselling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate tirade listing every problem they’d ever over the years: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire list of unmet needs she had endured. After allowing this for a length of time, the therapist stood, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he kissed her passionately as her husband watched with a raised eyebrow. Silently the woman sat down. The therapist turned to the husband and said,“This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you see to it?” “Well,” he said, “I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I go fishing.”

spector (House Master) noted one particular area of concern, the chimney, and suggested we get it looked at. He went a bit further in his analysis and told us pretty much that if we didn’t address the issue before winter that we would likely be looking at some water infil-tration issues. That was all the prompting we needed and right away I took it upon myself to get on the horn and get someone in. I did have a fleeting moment of thinking I could probably do it myself but after seeing all the steps involved I am more than a little happy I didn’t attempt it. After calling around a bit I learned that this skill, stucco repair, is not in great abundance in Nanaimo. A few places never called back. Several more were no lon-ger in business (fly by night). One guy I called quoted me a price over the phone not having even seen the job?! Then I found a number for ‘Blain the Stucco Guy.’ I called him and left a message for him. A little later Blain called

Do you own a stucco home? Perhaps your parents do or maybe a close friend. If so then there will come a time when you or someone you know will require some stucco repair. The trick is finding someone who knows his stuff, will listen to what you need and get the job done in a reasonable time frame at a reason-able price. Recently we moved to a new home and, you guessed it, it’s stucco. The home in-

me back and let me know that he was going to be in my area later that evening. Sure enough around 7PM Blain showed up at my door and I showed him the job. He explained what likely needed to be done and we agreed on a price straight away. I thought his price was fair and the more I looked at the project the more I realized there was no way it was a home handyman special and no way I could have done the work myself. Once Blain got into removing the damaged stucco he realized that the problem was a bit worse and that the struc-ture underneath would need some carpentry attention. I took one look and agreed. I called my friend Darren at Creative Concepts Car-pentry. Darren indicated that I needed to do some re-building of the immediate area and needed to install some new flashing. I gave

the OK to the work and Darren’s team had it fixed up within a couple of days. Now it was back to Blain to work some stucco magic. It took him a few trips, due to the process in-volved and the need to allow the material to

dry between applica-tions, and pretty soon Blain had my stucco chimney looking like new. I was absolutely amazed at how good the finished product looked and I frequent-ly go out to the front lawn and just look at the chimney which I’m sure makes me a bit

weird but I don’t care. I hope anyone reading this who has need of stucco repair will call my friend Blain for a quote. He’s a good guy with a gift for working with stucco. Tell your stuc-co-dwelling friends and neighbors that when they need a stucco repair they need “Blain the Stucco Guy.” Call or text Blain for your stucco needs at 250-240-4099.

16 whatsondigest.com // SPOTLIGHT

Well, the name kinda says it all. It’s a sport that pits it’s players against each other while they roll around wearing old school roller skates on a big oval track that’s painted on a pretty solid looking concrete floor. Blockers knock you over, jammers defy blockers and score points and referees follow the pack pointing and blowing their whistles. It’s a game. It’s entertainment. It’s fun. What you may not know about roller derby is that it can change your life.

Roller derby allows a person to become their alter ego and express themselves in ways they never felt possible. For a few hours every week, Plain Jane from accounting can be ‘Pain Jane’ and wreak havoc on the opposition to a chorus of hoots and hollers from her team mates and fans. Wall flowers peel themselves out of their stereotypes and transform into a colourful array of characters that will shock and amaze you with their skill and athleticism. And all while they’re on roller skates!

A roller derby team is a close knit group of these individuals who accept each other for who they are, and who they aspire to be. There’s no such thing as not fitting in. Everyone fits. To-gether all these people build a family that works hard, plays hard and becomes a support group for all of its members on and off the track.

So if you’ve ever had the inkling that maybe something’s missing in your daily existence, there’s a good chance it’s roller derby. If you are tall, small, narrow, not-so-narrow, young, old, male, female, undecided, ex-hockey player, nev-er been on skates in your life, volvo driver…you’re perfect! Come on out to the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds and join the Knucklehead family. It can change your life.

Is your car trick or treater friendly? With Hallowe’en almost upon us it’s a good idea to make sure your vehicle does not pose a threat to the families out trick or treating on Hallowe’en night and as we move into the winter months.

Headlights. Get a friend to help you check your headlights. Check they are both working in high and low beamsand check that the bulbs are clean. A dirty headlight will reduce its effectiveness.

Windshield. Clean the inside of your windshield. It’s surprising how dirty it gets and the degree to which this can cause poor visibility and glare.

Tires. Make sure you have your tires checked for pressure and for tread. If your tires are worn this can have a negative impact on your ability to stop the vehicle especially on slippery roads.

Your mechanic can also suggest other areas you should consider for your own safety and for the safety and security of others.
