While it is undoubtedly the life lived inside a house that make it a ‘home’, there is no denying that the exterior of said building can benefit from some attention, too. Having an inviting, attractive exterior to your house increases curb appeal for homeowner and passers-by alike. And while there are a myriad of exterior finishing choices available, stucco is one of the most durable and fashionable ways to dress up your home. The benefits are many.

BEST LADIESWEAR

Stay cool and Look chic in the Summer Heat

Stay stylish even in the hot summer sun with these tips. • Choose natural fibres that are breathable like cotton, bamboo, rayon and modal.• Wear a stylish pair of strappy sandals or peep toe shoes.• Pull long hair up into a stylish up-do.• If you need to wear a hat, look for one made of straw.

• Long flowing and loose fitting garments actually keep you cooler than shorts. Just look at the Saudis! With these types of garments, there is more air circulation than if the clothes are clinging to your body.• Wear light colours instead of dark colours; the exception is light blue since light blue shows more sweat than any other colour.• Avoid sugary drinks and caffeine as they will dehydrate you.• If traveling, shopping or dining where there is air conditioning, be sure to bring a 3/4 sleeve cardigan with you.• Avoid tucking in your tops as it holds in the heat.• Don’t wear pantyhose unless your work demands it.

• Maxi dresses are so comfortable this time of year. They are suitable for both casual or formal events and are so helpful to keep you cool. Let the men wear the pants!

The 21st Annual Maple Bay Marina Wooden Boat Festival is a West Coast maritime event where owners of wooden boats are invited to an informal gathering to show off their boats. It also gives the public an opportunity to view classic boats and meet others that appreciate these wooden beauties.

Wooden boats have a long history and tradition on the West Coast and Vancouver Island. The people who dedicate their time and hard work to keep them in shape, build them, or restore them tie us to our maritime heritage. Maple Bay Marina continues to celebrate these remarkable vessels and the people whose passion keeps them afloat.

High Summer TemperaturesThe high temperatures of summer can be tough on a vehicle - everything from the paint down to the tires is subjected to harsher than normal conditions. Gone unchecked, some issues could leave you stranded in the heat. Here are a few tips to help make sure you and your vehicle are protected against the hazards of summer.

• Fluids like coolant, motor oil and windshield washer fluid are things motorists can regularly check on their own. Engine coolant, sometimes called antifreeze, is the number one thing motorists should stay on top of in the summer months. Be sure the coolant level is between the minimum and maximum markings, adding more if necessary. But never open the radiator cap or coolant tank lid when the engine is hot.

• Tire pressure is also important, especially in summer months. As the outside temperature climbs, the air in your car’s tires expands, so check your tire pressure when the tires are at a normal temperature - before you set out on a road trip.Tires that are over- or underinflated can reduce the vehicle’s handling capability or generate excess heat, causing a blowout. And over-inflated tires make hydroplaning more likely in rainy weather. Properly inflated tires increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency by up to 3%.

• Performing regular maintenance means it will take less fuel to make that long highway trip. Maintaining proper tire pressure and using cruise control on the highway are two easy ways to help keep your summer fuel costs down.

• Check the tread while you’re down there. Stick a penny in the tread gaps with Lincoln’s head facing down -- if the head is fully visible, you need new tires.

• We’ll leave it to your mechanic to tell you what needs to be done, but a quick tuneup before a long trip is a good idea -- especially because it could improve your fuel economy by 4% to 12%.

• Driving faster than 60 miles per hour decreases your fuel efficiency -- each 5 mph over 60 is like paying an extra 24 cents per gallon for gas. That money is better spent on a snack at the next rest stop.

Whether you are interested in an adventurous hike, a day of cycling or some horseback riding, the Cowichan Valley Trail and historic Kinsol Trestle are great destinations. The Cowichan Valley Trail is a spectacular multi-use trail that is part of the Trans-Canada Trail route on Southern Vancouver Island. There are eight historic railway trestles along the Cowichan Valley Trail route including the Kinsol, which is one of the tallest free-standing wooden rail structures in the world! 2524 whatsondigest.com // JULY 2016

Page 14: What's On Digest Cowichan July 2016

The seventh month of the year, July, was named by the Roman senate in honour of the Roman general Julius Caesar. On average July is the warmest month in the Northern hemisphere being the second month of summer. In the Southern hemisphere July and August are typically the coldest months of the year. But for us in the North July and August represent lazy summer days and those warm summer nights. Summer means outdoor festivals and backyard barbecues; waterslides and popsicles for the kids. This July 28th through 31st Sunfest will be the place to be for country music and festival lovers. This year, in case you hadn’t heard, Sunfest moves to its new home at the one and only Laketown Ranch off Youbou Rd near Lake Cowichan. As if you need any more motivation to hit Sunfest I’ll just say this: Carrie Underwood.

As a boy I remember the feeling of freedom that summer represented. No teachers and no responsibilities. That feeling that every day

held endless possibilities and the day seemed to stretch on forever. Even when the day was over it was never really over because in these climes it stays light until almost 10 at night. After 10 when it became dark my brother

and I would sleep in our sleeping bags under the stars. In those days the stars seemed brighter and clearer kind of like how it seems when you get to Laketown Ranch

where it’s easy to see the clusters of stars which form the milk in the Milky Way. This July and August thousands of people are going to be heading to concerts and festivals around the country. Another monster outdoor music festival locally this summer is the Legends Valley Music Festival August 26th-28th at Laketown Ranch. For details on this festival see the feature on page 16-17 of this issue of What’s On Digest. The 2016 line-up includes huge acts such as Sublime with Rome, Sheepdogs, Dirty Heads, Bif Naked, Daniel Wesley, and Forgotten Rebels... just to name a few. It ain’t called “Legends” for nothing.

July and August are truly twoof the great months.

1. We understand that Trooper’s keyboard player Gogo and bass player, Scott Brown are Nanaimo locals!

Yes!! The Bathtub Races will be a rare (and excellent) opportunity for Gogo and Scott to play in front of their Nanaimo friends and family. Both of these amazing musicians have been in the band for over 20 years. To put that in context, the band that recorded Raise a Little Hell was together for five years! So these guys, with Clayton Hill (from South Porcupine Ontario, by way of Campbell River, BC) on drums, have made Smitty and I, and Trooper generally, the tightest and most musical we’ve ever been!

2. How do you find the music industry now compared to when you started.

(It’s) changed completely since the days we were coming up. There used to be a pretty clear path to follow that at least offered you the promise of success. You worked hard, got some gigs, got some fans, got better gigs and more fans and then a record company guy would offer you a recording contract. After that you crossed your fingers but at least that was a road to follow that made sense. Talking about it now feels like I’m talking about phones with chords or cars with cranks. Everything has changed. The upside is you can now make a record in your bedroom and release it online whenever you want - and the record companies don’t control everything. I have great empathy for all the musicians, singers and songwriters out there trying to get something going.

3. What motivates you to keep Trooper going after all these years?

It’s still a ton of fun! Our summer will be full of adventure. We get to play everywhere, and often in places that even the most seasoned traveller would never end up. When we arrive, folks treat us like their favourite uncles coming to town. When we play, the shows are all sold out and full of super appreciative fans. What’s not to love?
