HOME&LIFEDon't take a flamethrower to Sponge Bob. Just build a bigger fence. Sometimes home life can be a lot of work. We love our homes and we love and care for the people in our family. Still, I don't think I'm out on a limb when I say that the day to day reality of so called domestic bliss takes its toll on our sanity at times.

We think of our home as a refuge from the world at large, a castle of our own, a place of safety and security At the same time we struggle through spousal skirmishes and pa-rental rows on a regular basis The "job" of being a good spouse and good parent takes patience, consistency, and needs to come from a place of honesty and fairness Part of the trial of life is to negotiate the some-times rough waters of parenthood and be a good 'partner' while still keeping the family

trust intact For me, a good strategy if things are getting tense, and more so when I, my-self, am the source of the tension, is to get out of the house even if it's just to the back-yard The problem with this 'solution' is that it's not necessarily our home/family dynamic that creates tension in the oasis of subur-bia Often it's the neighbours In such cases, therefore, the supposed backyard "re-charge" becomes the backyard "un-ravel" Recently, for example, I came home after a particularly long and trying day I was pretty tired out and the one thing I wanted to do was to fire up the barbeque, put on some relaxing mu-sic, crack something cold, enjoy my backyard and maybe relax for a few minutes Just a few minutes so I could muster some strength As it happened on that day I had one neig-bour working on a construction project in his backyard and the neighbour on the other side had four "Sponge-Bobber" kids (as I like to

call kids who, by all outward appearances, seem to have learned most of their lessons on normal behaviour, from the TV cartoon char-acter Sponge Bob) on the trampoline next door I mean one very loud "Sponge Bobber" on a trampoline, fine well not really fine but bearable Two, no problem; I can deal with it But get four of them together and be-lieve me construction noise sounds like Bach at his most melancholy In those type of situ-ations it takes the patience of a saint not to, in the words of Al Pacino from the movie "Scent of a Woman", " Take a f lamethrower to the place " Rather than create conflict, though, and engage in behaviour unconducive to my continued freedom I'm going to take to heart a quote related to me years ago by a realtor friend of mine He said simply: "Good fences make good neighbours " So if you know of a good fence-builder let me know I need less Sponge Bob in my life

Article by Simon Rideout

The problem with this 'solution' is that it's not necessarily our home/family dynamic that creates tension in the oasis of suburbia. Often it's the neighbours.

JOKE. Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human

Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what starting salary are you looking for?” The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package ” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it ”

This article builds upon my previous column in What’s On Digest in term of common misconceptions we have about our options when we find ourselves in financial distress.

Bankruptcy: it’s the secret parachute we all have thought about in our darkest hours We ponder: “…if the business fails…” or “…if my student loan debt grows unmanageable…” bankruptcy is the magic “reset” button It is, of course, not the option any of us would want but we know it is there as a possible, if unpalatable, exit

In truth, it is actually much harder to fulfill the criteria required to be recognized as bankrupt This is particularly true if you have any tangible assets or an average household income

The cold fact is, to enter into personal bankruptcy you need to meet a number of stringent conditions and it will very likely be 5-7 years from the start of the process before you are discharged from Bank-ruptcy In addition, you will also need to prove that you are 100% insolvent This is harder than many people think In fact many people are proven to be capable of paying down their debt over time In these situations it is often the case that bankruptcy applications are rejected This scenario of course wastes time and money both of which, in these situations, are typically in very short supply

For these reasons a significant number of people from all over the Cowichan and local Gulf Islands who, at the first sign of financial troubles, consid-ered filing bankruptcy actually end up contacting me at 4 Pillars for a far less extreme, but equally

effective, solution My role at 4 Pillars debt con-solidation is to work closely with you as an ally to help you get out of unmanageable debt In fact it is not uncommon for bankruptcy trustees them-selves to acknowledge that people really ought to work at all costs to avoid declaring personal bankruptcy So when you get yourself in a finan-cial pickle don’t rush to any decision before call-ing me There is really nothing I haven’t seen or any situation that surprises me and when the stuff hits the fan trust me – you want me in your corner to help you with a simple and effective solution as you build a path back to financial stability

Tires

It's used but it's new to me. Used vehicles are my absolute favourite! I'm not really talking about old broken down beaters although they have their own charm.

If you look at anything, vehicle wise, in the past 5-8 years you will find they have most of the bells and whistles you want or need Used cars are nicely worn-in like a good baseball glove They're comfortable They are like your favorite old pair of jeans In the first 3-5 years the worst of the depreciation is over so your investment will hold its value longer Another reason used cars can be a good option (especially if you're a parent) is that you aren't likely to have a "freak-out" when your kids spill their soda or milk or whatever they may be drinking or munching on With a used car it's just easier to relax and allow the vehicle to fulfill the basic intended purpose without being all fussy If the car is older than 8 years, or so, chances are good the seller will be highly motivated to sell This really puts you, as the buyer, in the drivers seat and is yet another reason to look for used versus new If the pre-vious owner was organized, you can usually get a hold of the service records These documents allow you a glimpse into the overall 'health' of the vehicle from time of first sale to the pres-ent When reviewing the service history You may have to read between the lines a bit For example if the car is a 4x4, has less than 80,000KM's and already has new shocks this tells you something It might say to you, for example, this vehicle was

used as someone's off-road 'toy' as opposed to having been off road only occasionally or, better yet, not at all This very well could be a red flag If the vehicle was driven hard it will likely have other issues yet to emerge Generally though, what you notice in service records is whether the vehicle seems to have been cared for or ne-glected You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure this out Think in terms of: was the oil changed regularly? Did they rotate the tires? This kind of thing Just check the records and you will see a picture emerge You might want to look for any expensive service items and ask about them If, after reviewing the records, you still have questions you should have it checked out by your local mechanic just for the extra peace of mind It is not expensive and he will go through a check list with you and let you know what you may be in for If you're buying at a dealer think critically about whether the fact that they checked the ve-hicle is enough for you Sometimes a 3rd party with no vested interest will see things in a differ-ent light Finally, a used car can really be made to feel new again with things such as new tires, brakes and regular detailing If you look at the total picture and take into consideration all the factors there is no reason a used vehicle can't be as good as new or even better!

What’s in your mattress? I think it's important to know what you're sleeping on. Few would argue that people want information they can rely on in order to make an informed decision.

This is particularly true in relation to the larger purchases we make such as purchasing a new bed or mattress

When you are shopping for your next mattress we suggest asking three, easily overlooked, ques-tions before making your final decision After all, you will, presumably, have to live with your deci-sion for quite some time

1. Are the ingredients that make up this mat-tress good for my health and well being?

Petrochemicals make up a large percentage of many “big box” mattresses These chemi-cal fumes release into the air throughout the life cycle of the mattress As a result we are breathing and absorbing these chemicals while we are sleeping Not a cozy feeling

2. What percentage of this mattress is certi-fied organic?

Many mattresses claim to be natural or organ-ic when they actually have a high percentage of chemical ingredients Know the percentages before you decide and think critically about if you want to deal with a company that mis-rep-resents their products

3. Is this mattress biodegradable?

Over 20 million mattresses enter our landfills every year in North America This non-biode-gradeable waste will remain in our environ-ment for a time span measured in the hundreds of years At Resthouse we stand by our com-mitment to only carry completely biodegrad-able bedding products An organic mattress that is completely biodegradable offers you the comfort and support you desire no matter what your sleeping position, age, or body type As important as your actual rest, or sleep, all Resthouse products offer you peace of mind as you slumber…sweet dreams!

We lucky few, who have chosen to make our homes in this most amazing and geographically and (increasingly) culturally diverse part of the world, sometimes forget how blessed we truly are Why, for example, on long weekends are there such long line-ups to catch a ferry here? Why, do tourists come from all over the world to visit? Why indeed? Well it's obvious to me: this place is special From the history and architec-ture of towns large and small, to the sweeping natural vistas of mountain and ocean there is something to suit every taste Some people enjoy the simple pleasures of shopping and dining in an urban environment If that suits your fancy you can find it Whether it's Nanaimo to Chemainus or Duncan to Shawnigan Lake or any one of the many points between you will discover local shopping and cafes that are truly world class If the outdoors are more your game Vancouver Is-land is a paradise From rock climbing to skiing, golfing, fishing or boating it's all right here! For the truly active person you could, in theory, do 18 holes of golf in the morning and head up for some afternoon or night skiing at Mt Washington (when the snow gods cooperate of course) How fun is that? When my wife and I moved to the Island in 2002 I was earning a business degree

and thought this was a temporary stop along the way We had even discussed the idea of moving back to Vancouver after graduation That was 13 years ago Since that time we have raised 2 boys (work in progress) camped on the beaches of the Island, taken whale watching cruises, visited the old-growth rain forests, enjoyed city nightlife, and taken in the great outdoors I cannot see ever leaving the Island; there is just too much to love I havn't even talked about the great people here People on Vancouver Island tend to have a unique spirit, a can-do attitude After all, the people that live here have literally built the cities, roads, and bridges We all have something we can contribute We all have a voice and a part to play on this great stage One thing I've learned is you can't just waste away on the sofa, or expect that this world owes you, if you want to enjoy this one life we have to live you have to get up, get out there and make a positive imact! Seek out places in your city that speak to you Find your passion, do amazing things and above all: "Carpe Diem" seize the day

Prose? Poetry? This wonderful section from Kit Pepper’s book about her season in the Guatemala highlands, Let Beauty Be, seems close to a diary entry, yet her choice of words and simile transforms it into poetry Kit has woven the beauty (and the poverty) of the area into an enchanting tapestry The fact that she is a runner and that these poems record her daily running route during her months when she was working at a clinic in the highlands, grounds the poems into a reality that can include garbage dumps and bird-filled forests in the very same verse You may think of poetry as fitting on a page, or two, but this book is a single long poem the length of a novella

Kit Pepper lives on Gabriola Island and works in the faculty of Education at Vancouver Island University She has travelled widely and her travels are reflected in her poetry Her poems have appeared in many literary journals She is an extremely modest person and attributes the richness of her life to her students and three sons

Day 28 Across the valley, rows of corn, like patrons

seated in an open air theatre, waiting for the show.

Fields await the rain and I can’t seem to lif t my legs

though the road is f lat and this, my usual running route.

I try and try but these legs tether close to the ground.

Should I Be Using MacKeeper?Should I be using MacKeeper? I get this question on a daily basis. I suppose the real question is, “What is MacKeeper, and why does it appear to be so ubiquitous?

MacKeeper is a utility software suite that of-fers anti-virus, data control, system cleaning, and system optimization, along with other features MacKeeper is ostensibly designed to help your computer In this respect, it is a legitimate piece of software Yet, as a technician, I urge my customers to remove it from their systems MacKeeper uses scare tactics to promote their product Using “Pop-Under” adver-tisements, it will warn people to clean their Macs These messages suggest that infections may have been found on the computer, and will claim this even before scanning the computer It is a nasty way to take advantage of those who do not know better This is the first reason I do not recommend MacKeeper The software has questionable value at best MacKeeper is an “always-running” application There is no

simple way to turn it off once it is installed The software even advertises that it will speed up your Mac The problem with this is if your computer was already slower to begin with, it is likely MacKeeper will only further slow your

computer down Once MacKeeper has been installed, it is not an easy task to remove it The app installs itself deep in your system files The uninstall procedure, provided by the developers, will

only delete parts of it Thereafter, MacKeeper files will still be found throughout the com-puter MacKeeper may not be a virus, or mal-ware, but it is poorly designed with little to no value, and uses questionable tactics If you are looking for a quick fix to a slow system, reli-able anti-virus, or data control, a professional can help determine the right software for you

Yet, as a technician, I urge my customers to remove it from their systems.

MacKeeper uses scare tactics to promote their product.
