The Family Road Trip It was sort of a rite of passage, back in the day, to pack up the car (and pack everyone in it…comfort be damned) and head out on the road. Ahhhhh: the family road trip; a not-so modern day test of the ties that bind. Now that I mention it…is the family road trip something families even do anymore? Or did too many families break apart because of the road trip that is sort of died on the vine? Maybe it was more of a “70’s” thing. The kind of “well we can…so we should” type of vacation that our parents’ generation came up with. Whatever the case may be if you’re pondering a big cross-country, or even trans-continental, car trip with the family you may want to at least take the vehicle in for an inspection prior to heading out. A quick pre-trip check-up can, mostly, rule-out any major car issues from threatening to derail your big adventure. Your local mechanic will be able to perform a full inspection of all the major systems and advise you on what needs doing and what to keep an eye on. This kind of inspection can, hopefully, help you avoid having any traumatizing road-trip breakdowns like the kind that happened to my family when I was a kid.

When I was around the tender and highly impressionable age of 9 or so, my family, all 5 of us, took the old green non-air conditioned,

Volvo (built for 4 comfortably and if your an adult in one of the two luxurious front seats then “who really cares” and by the way “keep it down back there”) from roughly Vancouver to roughly Chicago for a road trip. Wouldn’t you know it the alternator (or something like that I mean ‘c’mon’ I was 9 OK I don’t know what it was…) gave out literally in the middle of nowhere. Anyway it may as well have been the last stop before the end of the earth and, go figure, the big breakdown happened at the end of the working day on a Friday. It seemed to us like “nobody but nobody” wanted to go the extra mile for a bunch Swedish-car-driving Canadian folk. This was pre-Glasnost and there was no Perestroika for us communist-Canucks on that day. The head mechanic took one gander at that Swedish mess of a “Grande Luxe” and he just walked away shaking his head. I think I even heard a snicker. If only we’d have taken the car in to be checked out by a good Canadian mechanic prior to heading out on the road….but no. So there we were in “one-horse-central” standing all alone quietly realizing the gravity of our situation each of us silently wondering what the heck we were going to do…and that’s just about the time the heavy black clouds rolled in and the first drops of rain started to fall.

Style Tipsby KC’s Boutique

Choose Long Shirts to Wear with Skinny Pants and Leggings. Women are loving the skinny bottoms and we don’t see them going anywhere soon. Keep it current by choosing a tunic, sweater or jacket that “COVERS THE BACKSIDE.” It is much more sophisticated for those over 40! Stick to black, charcoal, brown or navy. Dark colours slim curvy bottoms. Layer a long top with a second long piece like a sweater, vest, jacket or KIMONO (all the rage this season) to show great style. Wear the right footwear. Ballet flats, tall boots, pumps or booties complete the look top to bottom. We carry Regular & Petites Size 2-16.

That’s a great question. Cats and dogs are not the same species, and both species require spe-cial treatment. Dogs are social creatures, who work hard to please the humans they are with. Convince a dog that you are someone they should please, and they will do almost any-thing for you. Most of the things we do to make dogs love us are natural: a pet on the head, a treat, and a kind word are usually all it takes to get a shy pup to open up and feel more com-fortable. That doesn’t mean they like what we are doing, but they are more comfortable when they realize the people they love are ok with the situation. When examining dogs we speak in happy voices and try to show them that the whole thing is a game.

Cats are not the same at all. Like dogs, cats are also extremely social creatures, but they inter-act with their friends in a much different way than dogs. When they are stressed they want quiet and calm, scents of home, and anything that’s familiar. We work with cats by moving efficiently and quietly, keeping them in their familiar places as much as possible, and keep-ing noises to a minimum.

When we approach a dog, we act much as we would with a human. And they expect friendly humans to do that. When you approach a cat, the types of things that make them comfortable are not natural to us. A Cat Friendly Practice means that we have taken special education to learn to modify our natural behavior to help cats feel comfortable and to be more “cat-like”.

Working at a Cat Friendly Practice means we are great at keeping cats comfortable when they are in the clinic. And it gives us the skills to

better observe what our patients are asking for. Funnily enough, this also means we are even better at understanding what our dog patients are asking for!

Interview with KIRSTEN NASH

WO: Tell me about your connection to Nanaimo?

KN: I grew up in Yellow Point…my mother, my brother and I were originally from San Francisco, but we moved to the island when I was five years old. She met my stepfather, Jack Nash in Nanai-mo and married him when I was about eight years old I think. As a family with my new stepbroth-ers, we built the Crow and Gate pub in Yellow Point, during which I went to first Woodbank El-ementary School, then Cedar Junior Secondary School, then NDSS, after a quick year in Duncan. I also attended the Malaspina College (as it was called then) jazz studies program.

WO: You play a variety of instruments do you have a favourite? Which was your first?

KN: My voice was my first…as a kid I was al-ways singing…still my favourite instrument. I plunked around on guitar then, but I didn’t really take it seriously until a couple of years ago. Al-though my first instrument was flute, (my choice being based on it being the lightest thing to carry on the way to school) I soon changed to tenor sax. In fact, I still play the Selmer Mark VI that I bought from Bryan Stovall when I was 15 or so...never thought of playing another.

WO: You have written two rock operas - that is amazing ... do you produce and star in them also?

KN: My husband and I co-produced one, “Alice in Modernland”, that was work-shopped off-Broadway with the main producer being Mitchell Maxwell of Maxwell productions. I never, ever want to be in my shows; my “part” is stressful enough!! Plus I think that would take away my objectivity, the enjoyment of seeing the different ideas and colours “real actors” bring to my work.

WO: R&B ALLSTARS have been around for many years how is this band different/ same from the past?

KN: We have a few new players…and a new front man, David Steele, who is just incredible.. We adore Hans Stamer, but he’s doing his thing and happy with that. We have some players from the very original Allstars; Russell Marsland on guitar, Rick Hill on drums, Al Davidson on keyboards and Al Lynch on trumpet. Joining us for the first time is Billy Mendoza on very funky bass. Back from the band that last played the Queens: Colin Weinmaster, our fearless leader on trombone, John Pearson on baritone sax, Tom Keenlyside on alto sax and me on tenor and vocals. Of course Joani Bye is there in all her magnificence and we’ll be bringing our new CD and DVD set with us to the Queens if anyone’s looking for great funky Christmas presents!

WO: I have to ask ...you have done gigs with Jeff Healey Tom Jones Boz Scaggs any specific high-lights you can tell us about?

KN: I did a lot of playing around town during Expo ’86. Of course that’s when some great tal-ent was hitting Vancouver. Jeff Healey used to play the Yale a lot, I would jam with him there, and at the after-hours hotspot, Basin Street. We just en-joyed hanging out, did a little partying. I remember a conversation at the “Club 86 Street” one night, about how frustrated we were because we’d both been dealing with the same record label A&R guys and both of us had been told, “Love you, love your work, but you need a gimmick that will get people’s attentions!” Here I was a blond (then), big haired crazy woman in high heels, blasting away on the tenor and singing Janis Joplin, and Jeff was a blind guy singing and wailing on his guitar like Hendrix…and we needed gimmicks!

Forgotten password? Only asterisks in the password entry box? No problem. In many places on the Internet you need to input your password to gain access, authorize or con-firm a transaction. Whenever you type a password into the input text box the characters automati-cally turns into asterisks or bullets and then stay that way. This security measure can contribute to you forgetting your password. Here’s how to reveal your password if you have forgotten it. In any web-site containing your saved password, right click your mouse on the password box and left click on: Inspect element. Look for: type=”password” and double click on it. Replace the word ‘password’ with ‘text‘. It should now say type=”text”. Hit En-ter. After you’ve changed that, the text behind the asterisks or bullets should be revealed. Nanaimo has a rich diversity of activities for us as we move from middle age to old age. There are no shortage of so-called “seniors” who have as much vitality and “youth of spirit” as when we were younger than we are today. Always check out What’s On for information on what oth-ers who are on in years are up to and how it’s the community and activities that keep us young!

Bowen WanderersThe Bowen Wanderers are a diverse group of seniors who meet to enjoy fresh air, exercise and congenial company each Thursday morning. Trails are scouted out ahead of time by our leader Mark and listed monthly in the NHCS Newsletter with the relevant meeting place. Locations are between Ladysmith and Qualicum. Car pooling is encouraged. We walk all year but weath-er sometimes necessitates a change of destination to avoid flooded trails, icy paths or poor road conditions. If you are not sure if you are a stroller or a walker then a “pub lunch” day often involves a shorter walk and is a good introduction to fellow Wanderers. Mark’s philosophy is that “participants have the ability to talk and walk at the same time”. With suitable footwear and dressed appropriately for the season you will have a pleasant day out exploring and making friends so don’t be shy - come and join us. FMI nanaimoharbourcityseniors.com

What’s “Brovember”? It’s a local spin on a wor-thy cause. The 5th Annual Brovember, hosted by the Nanaimo & District Hospital Founda-tion, welcomes Central Vancouver Islanders to grow a ‘stache for cash, or pledge a “bro” to grow. All pledged proceeds will benefit men’s health at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). Since 2010 the event has raised more than $27,000 for the purchase of cystoscopes in the fight against prostate cancer. Medical pro-fessionals, corporate partners, and service club members along with regular gents are tossing aside their razors for a chance to win the envi-able Brovember Cup as top pledge earners. It does not stop there; prizes are also awarded for creativity and best attempt.

As the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular Pro-ducer and Creator Katy Bowen-Roberts heads into her ninth season, she took a moment with us to reflect on the production and its journey thus far.

“It feels like only yesterday that I was sitting co-zied up by a wood burning fire with a pint of bit-ter, a few creative artistic friends, a napkin and pen and an outpouring of ideas that would soon become a seed for the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular”. In a small country village outside Norfolk, England, Katy found herself dream-ing up this singing and dancing extravaganza. Little did she know then that nine years later, the show would be welcoming nearly six thou-sand people through its doors annually and that it would be known for it’s Christmas spirit, it’s talent, it’s energy, and it’s success.

This year’s singing and dancing spectacular in-cludes hits by the Beach Boys, a Rock of Ages med-ley, Bobby Darrin songs, songs from Grease and Moulin Rouge, a Canadiana set as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favourites.

Two weeks before the show opens, a cast of 14 professional singers, dancers and musicians will begin an intensive two-week rehearsal period in preparation for opening night. “It takes a year of planning to bring this show to

the stage but it’s worth every minute” says cre-ator, Katy. “Audiences leave buzzing night after night and when I hear them cry, ‘my Christmas has officially begun’ I know that we have suc-ceeded.” The show is fast moving and colorful with dazzling costumes, lights and sequins. It takes you on an emotional journey through a wide variety of music and dance all interwoven with touching readings and stories, an audience sing-along and a Christmas Quiz.

There are 17 performances in three different venues (The Cedar Community Hall, The Port Theatre and the Sid Williams Theatre) running from December 4th – De-cember 20th. Please visit www.yellowpointchrist-masspectacular.ca for more information. Tickets are on sale now at the Port Theatre Box office (250.754.8550) and the Sid Williams box office (250.338.2430). Book your tickets soon so that you don’t miss this spectacular event.

When we think about filing bankruptcy, we often think that we will be in the hands of the court and protected from your creditors. In some ways this is true, but you will actually have to pay fees to the Bankruptcy Trustee and just because you are paying their fees, this does not mean they are representing you.

In fact, a Bankruptcy Trustee isn’t appointed to you. You choose one.

The role of the trustee is to ensure that everything is done within the parameters set by the Bank-ruptcy and Insolvency Act and that both you and your creditors follow all bankruptcy rules. The definition of the trustees role is as follows:

‘The trustee is an officer of the court who acts on behalf of the creditors in a fiduciary capacity’

In plain English, this means that your bank-ruptcy trustee isn’t neutral. They have a duty to get the best return on behalf of the creditor. Bankruptcy Trustees represent the creditors, they cannot represent you. Seeing a Trustee without having your own representation is kind of like asking your spouse’s divorce law-yer what would be a good deal for you in the divorce. Since this lawyer already represents your spouse, do you think the answer he/she gives you would be one that is in your favor?

In life, there are always two sides to every situ-ation. You want to have your side represented as well.

I represent you, not the creditors.

Having intimate knowledge of the Bankrupt-cy and Insolvency Act, I consult with clients with their best interests at heart. My goal is to protect their assets and settle their debt as aggressively as possible, at the lowest possible amount. Once the debt is restructured I begin our Credit Rebuilding Program. At 4pillars, we offer the most comprehensive credit rebuilding program in Canada. With the exclusive prod-

ucts that we offer our clients, we can usually get their credit rating back on track within about two years. More on your credit rating in my next article.

If you are struggling with debt and want to ex-plore the options available to you, call me. I provide a free, no obligation consultation.

bles are made up of carbohydrates? So if we fol-low this logic then even eating veggies must be bad for us! In reality, of course, there are good carbs and not so great ones just like with fats. Really any attempt to categorize the nutritional value of broad categories of food is inherently difficult. Sometimes it just takes a bit of com-mon sense and some label-reading. In the mean-time here’s a little list for you so you can get the “good” carbs and avoid packing on the fat.

Good Carbs:

• All fruits and vegetables in their natural state• Brown Long grain rice • Potatoes all kinds• Rolled oats

No so great:

• Potato chips• Breads… even the sprouted or ancient grains• Flavoured rice cakes• Pastries

If you need help with menu planning or nutrient timing I would be happy to help you figure out how to find a sustainable lifestyle balance when it comes to eating or training.

We have all been through the low fat and no fat diets: they seemed to make sense. The thought process is simple: “…not eating fat means I won’t gain fat, right?” WRONG!

The “fat-free” trend actually had the opposite effect for dieters. The reason is that in order to meet demand for “fat-free” products companies created low-fat, or zero fat items by adding more sugar and other chemicals. The problem here is that these ingredients caused more weight gain than if the would-be dieter just stuck to their old fat-riddled diet.

We are now starting to see the same trend with carbohydrates where companies are capitalizing on public perception that carbohydrates are in-trinsically bad. Did you know that most vegeta-
