The show has grown over the

past nine years into a production that is unique and has become a special

holiday tradition for thousands of people

annually across central Vancouver

Island.

As the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular Producer and Creator Katy Bowen-Roberts heads into her ninth season, she took a moment with us to reflect on the production and its journey thus far.

“It feels like only yesterday that I was sitting cozied up by a wood burning fire with a pint of bitter, a few creative artistic friends, a napkin and pen and an outpouring of ideas that would soon become a seed for the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular”.

In a small country village outside Norfolk, England, Katy found herself dreaming up this singing and dancing extravaganza. Little did she know then that nine years later, the

show would be welcoming almost six thousand people through its doors annually, that it would be known for it’s Christmas spirit, it’s talent, it’s energy, and it’s success.

Katy’s work on this show begins in February. On the floor in her living room, she spreads out hundreds of musical scores, books and CD’s in front of her and begins to piece together the show. Within a month, it has started to take shape and James Mark, Musical Arranger, comes onto the scene. After hours of discussion, the team is ready to get started. James sets to work arranging the music and over 60 pieces will be found in this year’s score. Katy sets to work booking theatres, hiring the creative team, advertising and managing auditions, creating contracts, designing the marketing campaign, contacting past and future audience members and ordering costumes.

“Not a day goes by throughout the year that I don’t think about this show. Some weeks I put in just a few hours. Others, the hours are endless and full of big decisions and exciting opportunities. There is always something to work on”, says Katy.

The show has grown over the past nine years into a production that is unique and has become a special holiday tradition for thousands of people annually across central Vancouver Island. This year’s singing and dancing spectacular includes hits by the Beach Boys, a Rock of Ages medley, Bobby Darrin songs, songs from Grease and Moulin Rouge, a Canadiana set as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favourites.

Two weeks before the show opens, a cast of 14 professional singers, dancers and musicians will begin an intensive two-week rehearsal period in preparation for opening night.

“It takes a year of planning to bring this show to the stage but it’s worth every minute” says creator, Katy.

“Audiences leave buzzing night after night and when I hear them cry, ‘my Christmas has officially begun’ I know that we have succeeded.”

The show is fast moving and colourful with dazzling costumes, lights and sequins. It takes you on an emotional journey through a wide variety of music and dance from rock & roll to Broadway, jazz and classical, all interwoven with touching readings and stories, including

There are 17 performances in three different venues (The Cedar Community Hall, The Port Theatre and the Sid Williams Theatre) running from December 4th – December 20th.

Although the true origins of coffee remain unknown, one common legend involves a 9th-century goat-herder named Kaldi in Ethiopia, where the native plant is thought to have originated. Noticing his herd was unusually high in energy, Kaldi discovered they had been eating the red berries of a particular bush.

Upon chewing one of the berries himself, he excitedly gathered some more and took them to a monk in a nearby monastery. The monk, however, disapproved of the berries and threw them into the fire. The wonderful aroma that filled the room attracted the other monks and the beans were quickly raked from the embers, ground up, and dis-solved in hot water. Thus the first cup of coffee was born.

Marc has wanted to be a nurse since he was a teenager, but for the next 2 decades, Marc was self-employed in the public service sector, worked in manufacturing and finally construction, until the late 2000’s when the recession hit. In 2009, at the age of 45, Marc decided it was time to re-visit his dream. He started with the HCA program at DCC and found employment right away between a local private seniors home, private surgical unit and the hospital.

In 2011, Marc decided to take it one step further and came back to DCC to take the Practical Nurse Access Program (shortened track for people who are already HCA’s). Marc graduated in 2012 and found employment right away.

The Spotlight Season is The Port Theatre Society’s nationally acclaimed presentation series that showcases some of the most exciting touring artists available, every one of them showcasing artistic excellence and innovation. At the heart of the Spotlight Series is a passion to create access to diverse and authentic experiences for our audiences.

That passion continues Dec 12 with two performances of ‘Winter Harp’. Winter Harp will whisk you away to a faraway time and place. This holiday classic is a concert experience that has captured the spirit of the season in a gloriously evocative way. Clad in beautiful medieval attire set to backdrops of cathedrals, candles and snow, this

world class ensemble performs a collection of music that ranges from familiar carols to Celtic, medieval, world and Spanish tunes.

This year’s pantomime is based on the classic fairy tale The Emperor’s New Clothes. Set in the seaside village of Needle Point, the land is ruled by their beloved emperor, whose only weakness is a passion for fine clothes. His seamstress at the palace is Dame Sew N Sew, with the help of her sleepy assistant Thimble. Her only son, Peter, is impossibly in love with the emperor’s daughter. Count Cross stitch has devised a wicked plan to take over the kingdom for himself and with the help of his comic sidekicks Needle and Thread, he looks likely to succeed. Can the dame and her friends stop the count with the help of the good fairy?
