JACK LASSETER The Chiricahua Apaches, Warrior People of the Southwest Tuesday, August 20th 7:00 PM

Tickets: $10/$15/$20 in advance - all tickets $20 at door All that most of us know about the Apaches comes from the western movies, and our knowledge of them seems to end there, with the movies, so for us they remain mysterious, an enigma. Here is their real story, not the movie version. In this new talk on the Apaches, Jack assumes the audience has already heard the basic facts about them from his prior talks. This is the next level, where he brings the Apaches alive and makes them seem real, telling about them as a people, and sharing fascinating stories of their leaders, that makes him feel their presence when-ever he walks in their land. You also will feel their presence! It is quintessential Jack, and will make you want to go to the Chiricahuas where Cochise was born, to Apache Pass where he fought, and to his Stronghold in the Dragoons where he died.

The Arizona Banjo Blasters were founded by Rob Wright in 2007 with the purpose of inspiring the spirit of playing "Happy" Banjo Music. Many members of the band have over 50 years of banjo performance experience. Instruments at Blasters concerts include the 4 string banjo, banjo mandolin, banjo ukulele, washboard, upright bass and female vocalist! The AZ Banjo Blasters have had the privilege of playing in multiple venues throughout southern Arizona. The Blasters are a volunteer group and any fees they receive for performances are used for expenses and to support local charities including Anthony’s Foundation, Mobile Meals of Tucson and TUSD’s Opening Minds Through the Arts. The band also hosts the Arizona Banjo and Ukulele Blast festival every two years.

Tom Potter is a former college dean and professor who began his career in comedy in 1989. As a professional actor and come-dian, Tom has worked with the best including Jay Leno & Jeff Dunham, and can be seen in a variety of film and television projects including The Skeleton Key, Days That Shook the World, Man-Eater and Who’s Your Daddy?. He also performed for ten years at The Gaslight Theatre. Tom has combined his 1960’s rocker roots, his stand-up comedy and his love of the blues into COMEDY BLUES and a new one man show, Laugh-ing Away the Blues, which highlights the benefits of laughter and ways to laugh more.

THE ARIZONA EXPERIENCE With Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer Thursday, October 10th 7:00 PM

Dolan Ellis has been Arizona’s Official State Balladeer for 47 years. He is an expert photographer, and uses his digital photog-raphy to illustrate his Arizona ballads. Dolan is the founder of The Arizona Folklore Preserve in Ramsey Canyon. As an origi-nal member of the famous folk singing group, The New Christy Minstrels, Dolan has earned several gold records, as well as earning a coveted Grammy Award while with that group. To-day, Dolan is currently touring nationally with the NCM, in addition to fulfilling his busy performance schedule as “The Balladeer.” As Arizona’s Official State Balladeer, he has sung his ballads in more than twenty countries of the world. Dolan Ellis and his work have been entered into the United States Con-gressional Record, where he has been recognized as an “Arizona Treasure”, by Senator John McCain. After many years of dedication to his work, Dolan Ellis and his music have be-come synonymous with Arizona, its lands, and its people.

In1980, Dr. Herschel Kreloff be-came the orchestra’s artistic/musical director, and it has grown to full symphonic instrumentation. Now in its 37th year, COT enriches the cultural life of southern Arizona by presenting free concerts at various sites around the region.

Fasten your seatbelts for an energetic evening of 60’s and 70’s Rhythm and Blues hits with Rhythm Inc. and the Apocalypse Horns. This Rhythm and Blues Review will also feature special guests performing hits by Sam and Dave, Spencer Davis Group, Wilson Pickett, Rufus Thomas, Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat and Tears, Mitch Ryder and many more. Rhythm Inc. is a re-cently formed variety dance band with focus on Rhythm and Blues covers from the 60’s and 70’s. Based in Tucson and formed from the core of a very popular local band, The Desert Cadillac’s, founding members Dave Lekawa and Paul Law searched for musicians seeking the same vision. Ultimately, long time friend, Drummer and percussionist Les Roberts (Don Ellis, Brent Bryson Quintet, AlCan Quintet, Big Band Sounds of Green Valley, Tucson’s “Memories” Big Band) returned to Tucson and joined them to form the core of Rhythm Inc. The Apocalypse Horns also recently formed, works in conjunction with Rhythm Inc. Led by Green Valley’s own Jim Parcel. Jim enjoys notoriety as a Musical Director (Green Valley Stage Band, Anchorage Jazz Ensemble), Arranger and accomplished Trombonist.

Frank Guldseth and “Tucson Swings!” present an evening of Benny Goodman favorites in honor of the 75th anniversary of Goodman’s 1938 Carnegie Hall jazz concert. Goodman had almost single-handedly started the swing era (1935 – 1945). And, at it’s peak, he brought black ties and lorgnettes to the high brow loges of Carnegie Hall. The rest is history. Now join Frank and the band as they recreate the familiar arrange-ments of “Don’t Be That Way,” “Bei Mir Bist du Schoen,” and, of course, “Sing, Sing, Sing!” Frank Guldseth is a CIA retiree, having spent many years overseas. This year he and “Tucson Swings!” were invited to play the Carnegie Hall program for the John Denman Memorial Concert at UA. So, leave your black ties and lorgnettes behind, come sit back in the loges at CPAC as “Tucson Swings!” plays “BENNY LIVES!”

At the core of this Pulitzer Prize winning tragic comedy directed by Roberta Konen, are the three MaGrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy's home in Hazle-hurst, Mississippi after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The trio was raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments and each has endured her share of hardship and misery. The Larry Redhouse Trio is a world class ensemble led by jazz pianist Larry Redhouse. Larry has over 35 years of performing experience and has played at the Kennedy Center for the Per-forming Arts, The Smithsonian Museum and at the Grenoble Jazz Festival in Grenoble, France. He has opened for jazz greats Chick Corea and Terrance Blanchard, and backed popular artists Rick Braun and Euge Groove. The Larry Redhouse Trio incorporates straight-ahead jazz, latin, funk, and reggae influ-ences to its exciting repertoire. Tellebration is a world wide storytelling festival celebrated on six continents, in forty states, and nine countries. Traditionally the event takes place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The state storytelling association in Arizona is known as Tellers of Tales. Branches of TOT are located in Tucson and Phoenix with participation from Flagstaff and Sierra Vista. Tellers of Tales Inc., founded in 1979, is a non profit organization that believes stories need nurturing to live. Their purpose is to pre-serve oral literature through promotion of the art of storytelling. This performance will feature various storytellers from across southern Arizona and is appropriate for all ages.

Diane Van Deurzen & Lisa Otey are a dynamic duo, a perfect blend of hot jazz, sultry blues and cabaret. They take their act to festivals, clubs and theatres around the world. Recent perform-ances include the Thredbo Blues Festival in Australia; Yardbird Suite in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Yoshi's in Oakland, Cali-fornia; and the Lucerne Festival, Switzerland. Lisa has been inducted into the Tucson Music Hall of Fame and the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame and appeared on the Grammy-nominated CD, "Ladies Man", with Pinetop Perkins. Every-where Diane performs, she receives rave reviews and standing ovations for her soulful and angelic voice. A member of the Yaqui people of southern Arizona, Gabriel Ayala (Guitarist) is at the forefront of a new generation of Na-tive Americans making a career performing music. Gabriel will present "Jazzmenco", his own genre combining classical fla-menco and jazz, along with a few holiday selections. This eclectic repertoire will also showcase some jazz standards. Named Native American artist of the year, Gabriel performed in Vatican City for the Pope last October, in Washington DC at President Obama's first inaugural ball in January, for the Tucson Jazz Society with his quintet, and will spend November per-forming in South Africa as a guest of the government.

Critically acclaimed Western entertainer Mary Kaye now re-sides on a century old pioneer homestead in central Utah where her large family is involved in cowboying, horse training, and all things Western. Mary Kaye was recently rec-ognized by True West Magazine as the 2013 “Best Solo Musi-cian” of the year and also won the 2012 "Song of the Year" award from the Western Music Association. In addition, Mary Kaye is the Academy of Western Artists' 2011 Western Fe-male Performer of the Year and the Western Music Associa-tion’s 2010 Female Vocalist of the Year. Her 2012 album, No Wilder Place, debuted on the Western music charts at #1.

Join us for the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus (TABC) debut concert at CPAC. The TABC Holiday Concert is a Tucson tradition that began in 1939 with a Christmas Eve concert under the direction of founder Eduardo Caso. Under the direction of Julian Ackerley, the choristers will perform music of the season including Christmas carols, sacred songs and Chanukah selec-tions. The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus caries out its goal of serving as America’s singing ambassadors with annual interna-tional and domestic tours. The chorus has performed in numer-ous countries including China, Italy, Russia, Germany, Austria, Poland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The chorus has performed at the White House and on multiple national television programs.

Founded and led by the distinguished tenor, Grayson Hirst, this community-based men’s choral organization is comprised of men from all walks of life. Members include professional musi-cians, retired businessmen, scholars, teachers, doctors and oth-ers. Sons of Orpheus is a not-for-profit organization which pro-vides music scholarships and supports food banks and other numerous community organizations. They have performed with the Balalaika Orchestra, Tucson Chamber Orchestra and the Tucson Boys and Girls Choruses, among others.

This is the sequel, part II if you will, of Jack’s ever-popular talk “Women on the Arizona Frontier”. In that first talk, which many have now heard, he told us the stories and contributions of many Arizona women who came from vastly different ethnici-ties and backgrounds; and of the famous ones, the politicians, governors, judges, and the last stagecoach robber. Here, he shares with us the stories of many more women on this frontier who had “true grit”, and who helped, each in her own way, to civilize this place. From Montreal, Canada, Mimi Blais has been nicknamed “The New Queen of Ragtime.” Her music speaks to the audience, caresses, tickles, charms, dazzles, and surprises….it touches the soul. Mimi loves the theatrical and often uses costumes to pre-sent or invent characters. Mimi is one of the most popular rag-time performers on the circuit and is also the comedy star of the "genre". Blais displays deep musicality with flawless and pre-cise technique at the piano. Mimi is touring often in the United States, playing, explaining and showing people why ragtime is so important in the history of "American" Music. Blais has performed in countries such as Norway, Hungary and Belgium. Tamás Ittzés began to study violin at the age of six and has taught at the world famous Kodály School in Kecskemét. Tamás Ittzés founded his own eight-piece orchestra, the Bohém Ragtime Jazz Band, one of the premier ensembles in Europe. The band has performed at many of the top festivals and venues in Europe and North America. As a soloist he has played throughout the United States and England. Tamás won first prize at the International Scott Joplin Ragtime Composition Contest with his composition “Sedalia Rag” in 2001.

This Pulitzer Prize winning comedy, co-directed by Susan Voorhees and Amanda Urbaniak, is a standard among the American Theater repertoire. At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before you realize that if they are mad, then the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful peo-ple are the unhappy Kirbys. Tony, the attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore house on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by Mr. and Mrs. Kirby, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores find it hard to understand Alice's view. Tony knows the Sycamores live the right way with love and care for each other, while his own family is the one that's crazy. In the end, Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores after he happens in during a visit by the ex-Grand Duchess of Russia, Olga Katrina.

He is known for his swinging trumpet and vocal styles, and unique repertoire. He was honored as the first recipient of the Tucson Jazz Society's Lifetime Achievement award. Who went, why did they go, and what was it like on the trail? It is one of the most important expeditions in the history of the West, many historians say even more important than Lewis and Clark, and its story is fascinat-ing.

Tucson and District Pipe band is Tucson's newest and most exciting pipe band. Formed in 2011, they are a family-friendly group that is dedicated to furthering the arts of piping and drum-ming in Tucson. They are active in the local Irish, Scottish and general Celtic community in Tucson and participate in local and regional competitions. Pipe Major Michael Brollini believes in dedicating the band to improving, evolving and maintaining quality standards. Pipe Sergeant and chief tuner Neal Flint has been playing the pipes for 30 years. He is a professional piano tuner and a man very dedicated to his Irish roots. Bass Drum-mer Stuart Baker personifies in every way the idea that the bass drummer is the "heart beat" of the band. Lead Drummer Paul Gibson is a professional percussionist and plays just about every musical instrument that requires to be "hit" in some way. Tuc-son and District Pipe Band was recently crowned winner of the 2013 Tucson St. Patrick’s Day Parade “Best Musical Act.”

Working with voices had always fascinated Jerry Layne. As a child he won Paul Winchell's "Best Kid Ventriloquist" contest. Jerry spent six months active duty in the Military, where he and his partner, "Lester", did Public Relations work for the Armed Forces. Jerry later worked for Goodson-Todman TV produc-tions and moved to Montreal, Canada for Goodson-Todman's "Beat the Clock". While there Jerry created and hosted a chil-dren's television game show, "Puppet People". When he re-turned to the United States, in 1974, Jerry began his full-time career as a ventriloquist. He has appeared in hotels and clubs in Miami Beach and New York City and has worked as an opening act for many star performers in revues in Atlantic City and Reno. He regularly performs for theme parks, special events, TV shows, motion pictures, cruse ships and corporate events. Not content with just performing ventriloquism, Jerry makes many of his own figures, and is a leading supplier of ventrilo-quial figures to the motion picture & television industries.
