Workshop: Opposition Research in the Age of the Grid CPAC HUB: Space 2

    Lloyd Miller, Directive Research

This presentation looks at how the prevalence of social media and digital archive tools have made the task of opposition research, in some cases, nearly free and much more potent. Section 1 will be an overview of opposition research, best practices, and the new and effective digital tools available. It will include some tips and tricks on maximizing use without incurring costs. It will also briefly cover the ways that research has changed over the last decade: younger politicians have spent more time online, leaving more rich trails for researchers to follow. Section 2 will be an examination of the current digitization of archives from municipal, state, and federal agencies. It will include how to get access to this data, where to look, and what to ask for. This section is the meat of the presentation and focuses on the core examinations: legal, business, criminal, social, and government. Section 3 (optional for time) will cover how to gird oneself against these research tools, or how to get more off the grid. Section 4 will be either a Q&A to answer more specific questions, or an interactive section as described below.
