In our family, the first car that came into ourlives was a 1961 Black VW 1200 Beetle thatwe bought from a German family whomoved to a Ford Falcon of the day. (Much tothe previous owner’s chagrin, as we heardthat his old car - our Beetle - was much morereliable than his new vehicle!).

Although we did not do overly greatamounts of mileage in those days, the Beetledid its fair share of trips in and around thesmall country towns that we lived in at thetime. The only mishap that we had was aflat tyre in the period that we had the car.

Two years later in a trip to Adelaide, myfather traded the black Beetle on a brandnew 1963 white VW Beetle 1200 Deluxe.Therein lies a secret; because there weresmall, but important, improvements madeover the years the re-sale value of the Beetleremained high. After six trouble free yearswith the white Beetle, we persuaded him tobuy his third and last Volkswagen, a 1969Type 3 Squareback (stationwagen).

We were on our way to a new car.During the changeover negotiations andbefore the white Beetle could be traded, ayoung couple came to the dealership lookingfor a low mileage, one owner vehicle. Dad’sBeetle had covered only 26,000 miles in 6years and so fitted their requirements. Thecouple took our white Beetle that day;because of this wheeling and dealing(pardon the pun) we were left without trans-port. The dealership took care of this byloaning dad a Type Three Fastback Auto forthe family to get around in until ourSquareback was delivered from Melbourneafter being imported in CKD form fromGermany.

The new Type ThreeThe Squareback dad bought was a completechange from the Beetles we had in the past.It was bigger, quieter and more powerful(hard to imagine, but yes, the Type Threewas more powerful). It sported a new typeof motor which under the load area in therear (also known as the ‘suitcase engine’ inthe trade), as well as having a boot in thefront - of course this is a Volkswagen we’retalking about!

The icing on the cake, of course, was theIRS and the automatic transmission, whichwas a big thing in those days, as allVolkswagens then were only available inmanual form. In the Australian market, theBeetle came along with the auto option firstin 1968, followed closely by the Type Threein 1969, and then later the Kombi in the late70s.

Accommodation was quite a changefrom the cramped quarters that we had fromthe Beetles. The comfortable bucket seatsin the front were adjustable to 59 differentpositions and a fold down rear seat, although the car still only had two doorconfiguration. The Squareback that myFather had bought was the top of the range

Model line-up. So we kept our Type Threewhile VAG Germany blew in huge changes -the air cooled, rear drive models made wayfor the water cooled, front drive Passat, Poloand Golf, that were to change Volkswagen’sdirection.

Whilst the Squareback does not haveany of the options that are virtually expectedin the modern vehicle, such as air condition-ing, power steering, fast glass, electricmirrors, and the like, the model reflected thesimplicity that was the bench mark of thetime.

There were some options available andthese were usually dependent upon themarket for which the car was destined. As an example, vehicle destined for theAmerican market had different trim andoptions of opening rear hopper windows, and sunroofs.

In SummaryOur Squareback has certainly led a good life, always being garaged, and we certainlyspared no expense on the vehicle, whateverneeded to be done was done. In turn thestation wagon was used by everyone in thefamily and was a very reliableform of transport. Today the carhas covered only 108,000 miles(173,772 kilometres) in 35 years, and will no doubt do many morein the years to come. •

for that model year - with hinged middleside windows, external trim pack options,over-riders on the bumper bar, a grip mould-ing on the front hood, parking lights, twodoor pockets, padded back seat arm rests, chrome exhaust pipe ends, and a secondoutside rear vision mirror.

In the motor department, the only differ-ence was that our vehicle had the twincarburettor set up. This, as it turned out,was a minus. Although they gave betterperformance from the de-tuned motor, theyproved difficult to keep in balance and tune.

The Down sidesAlthough very reliable and easy on fuel, theSquareback had a few down sides. It wasnot fast, and definitely had a lack of a fewhorses in the back. It could, however, cruiseat 140kph all day if need be, as its cruisingspeed was also its top speed. In addition, asthe advertising material of the day extolled, the vehicle did not have three metres ofheavy exhaust to drag around, and no tailshaft. Consequently, the car made the mostof what few kilowatts there were, and, indeed, the auto is certainly no slouch andtakes off quite smartly compared to itsmanual counterpart.

We also found out that the Squarebackhad a tendency to wander at high speed incross winds (although not as badly as theBeetles did) which was due to the rearweight bias of the car.

> Paul Kinsey - DOVW Organiser

Well, the DOVW is over for another year. Forthe second year we held this event at theYarra Valley Racing Club at Yarra Glen. Wechanged the layout this year followingsuggestions from last year.

The swap sites were moved outside, many under the trees with plenty of shade. We had approximately 27 sites compared to18 last year, which was a great result. Wealso added some more interesting displaysunder the covered area, which provided acentre of interest. We had our sponsor’sCamberwell VW and Shannons plus trader’sincluding some from interstate, Classic VWand Vintage Vee Dub from Sydney, and KDFWerks from Tasmania. Thanks very much foryour support of the Day of the Volkswagenfrom all our club members.

We must also give special thanks to thePenrose brothers Rod and Wayne and theirteam for their sensational displays of the VWCabriolet and the VW Drag Car. Thanks verymuch for your effort, which was the focal-point of the day.

A total of 137 entries were received forthe show and shine and a special thanksmust go to Richard Graham and the team ofjudges which again had a difficult timejudging the winners in each class. Thanks toall club members and visitors who enteredtheir cars in the show and shine. Theypresented a wonderful picture spread underthe trees. Thanks again to all the judges.

In addition to the cars entered in theshow and shine, we had approximately 600plus keen VW enthusiasts pay entry to viewour cars and we received 17 new clubmembers on the day.

The club membership area this year wasvery well supported by Mercedes Woolleyand Kim Murray with the help of other club

members. Thanks very much for your effortand active involvement in attracting newmembers.

The other big attraction in the area wasthe preview of the book “Volkswagen inAustralia” prepared by club member RodDavies. This preview was really outstandingas it gave many of us an insight into a bookthat we have been hearing about for the lastyear or so. It really lived up to all our expecta-tions. I’m sure Rod will be flooded with ordersprior to Christmas.

This year the organising committeeconsisted of Richard Graham and myself. Weput a lot of effort into the planning andbudgeting for the event. We had forecasted aprofit of $5268 but we were happy when thefinal results were calculated showing that wehad made a profit of $5957. A very goodresult and will certainly will greatly assist ourclub’s finances.

Profit: $5957

This event would not have been sosuccessful without the excellent support ofour sponsors, Camberwell Volkswagen andShannons Insurance.

In addition, we were well supported bythe following VW Traders:Australian VW Performance Centre, CroydonVolkshome Automotive of ThomastownWolfsburg Automotive of EssendonClassic Vee Dub Supplies of SydneyVintage Vee Dub of SydneyVolkscare of BoroniaKDF Werks of Tasmania

We need to support our sponsors andTraders so that they will continue support ourclub.

Our swap sites this year were in greatdemand. Thanks to Stuart Ermel for his coordination role. This year, we provided ourown catering with major organisation byCheryl Ermel and Ross Woolley with supportfrom many keen helpers throughout the day. Thanks for a job well done to all involved.

This year we had to call for help for thecomputer work for tallying and summarisingthe judge’s results. We must thank bothMalcolm Thomson and Michael Cronin fortheir expertise and tremendous assistance inthis role. Thanks guys.

Again, on behalf of the organisingcommittee I would like to thank all the Clubmembers who assisted on the day andSaturday. The list is long and I hope I havenot missed any one. Thanks a lot.

The club committee has conducted areflection on how the event can be improvedfor next year, which will be considered in theplanning of next year’s event. However, if youhave any suggestions or thoughts for thefuture, please contact the writer or the clubcommittee.

To all who attended the DOVW this year, thanks for your support but please spread theword so we can make it better next year. •

My Life as a Kitchen Wrench> Cheryl Ermel

Well another DOVW has come around, and I must say itlooked pretty good from the kiosk window. Looking back Iwonder how I ended up there, along with the dozen or soother catering volunteers.

As most people know, the club has catered for the DOVWlast year with much success. The feedback from that eventwas that it provided good cheap food and drinks tomembers and returned a profit. This year again, I took onthe job of organising the catering. Ross and Mercedeshaving considerable experience also offered to help which was gratefully appreciated. So for weeks prior to the day, Ross, Mercedes, Paul, Richard, Andrew and myself worked together toorganise the food.

Learning from last year, we decided to have everything ready prior to Sunday. This meant that weneeded to clean and set up the kiosk on the Saturday. Arriving on the Saturday with two carloads offood and utensils, Ross, Andrew and I started in earnest. It was at this point Paul, Richard, Donald,Stuart, John and Helen, Harald, Bill M and John Stevens joined us. They were put to work, cleaning, cutting food, loading fridges and generally helping out.

Saturday night was very eventful as we found out that a ball was being held in the grandstand. Thisdelayed the setting out plans, but we continued on getting other areas ready for the next day. SinceRichard, Donald and Stuart appeared to be standing around, they were conned into becoming valetparking attendants for the ball. Donning their yellow jackets, they looked like the real thing. Thepayment of free food and drink from the function manager was too tempting to be refused. However,by the end of the night (about 1am), there was no food or drink, lots of noisy drunks leaving, yellingand blowing horns and very little sleep. I must say seeing the one Japanese car left in the middle ofthe covered area in the morning created a few laughs (1st prize in a raffle) and much thought abouthow to either disguise it or remove it from the area.

In the morning, the rest of the helpers arrived. The car was removed, and we began selling ourwares. The hottest items for the day were the cold drinks as the weather hotted up. As per cateringpolicy we tried to make sure all the DOVW volunteers were given food and drinks free of charge as athank you for helping out on the day. I hope all our volunteers were well looked after.

Many thanks to everyone that helped in the catering. Ross and Mercedes, John and Jan, John andHelen (new club members), Fleur, Frances, Louella, Matt K, Evan (bought a Kombi and will join theclub soon), Andrew, Donald, Stuart, Harald, Paul, Richard and Bill M. Also thanks to our backups –Aaron and Emily, our PA announcer Matt G and everyone on the club stand who covered for Rossand Mercedes. If I have forgotten anyone, please accept my thanks for helping out.

This year the catering profit did not reach our expectations, but the feedback so far indicates that theclub provided good cheap catering that is important to making the DOVW an enjoyable event.

Porsche makes tractors as do Mercedes, Fiatetc, but what about VW? During our trip toGermany, we found that Mercedes S classsports cars had been designed by and werebeing built by Karmann as were ChryslerCrossfires. In fact, Karmann made bodyparts for a whole range of cars with Jaguarbeing one that comes to mind. Volkswagenwas making Mercedes vans, the big onescalled Vito or Sprinter. It should not havesurprised me when my brother-in-law invited

me to check out his VW tractor. He showed me this B250 series International (built in the 50s and60s) and, to my wonderment, each casting on the whole tractor has VW logos cast into it. I havesince checked out 2 others with the same result. These tractors are in high demand amongstcollectors and bring around $5000 when restored.

My query is - “What category should this vehicle be entered in at the Day of the Volkswagen?

Did Volkswagen Make Tractors?> Bill Sundermann

MotorsportNews

> Jon Edsell - VWCV Motorsport and Group 5

2004 has been an interesting year forMotorsport in the VWCV. We have not hadas many people participating, but the onesthat have participated have done well. Justabout every VWCV member that competed ina Group 5 event gained Group 5 Points.Given that you have to be in the top 6 (in yourclass) to get Group 5 points, and in someclasses there have been in excess of 15competitors, this means that we have donevery, very well. Well done every one. Alsothis year we have had some 1st timers have ago, and go quite well, finishing close to mid –field in their first event.

Early next year we will be running aMotorsport Training Day. It will be for VWCVmembers only, so it will give you a chance totry entry-level motorsport, a Motorkhana anda Khanacross. You can use your VW, or yourdaily driver (Holden, Ford, Nissan, Toyota, etc.), whatever, as long as it has 4 wheels andan engine. We will have experienced VWCVmembers explaining what you have to do toenter, how the events are run, and giving tipson how to do your best. We will also explainwhat type of Motorsport events the VWCV istypically involved in, and what is required toget involved in them. We will offer informa-tion on where you can go from this entry level, and what is required to get there, if you wantto know. So if you have been thinking aboutgiving Motorsport a try, this will be youropportunity. I am planning to have the eventin February or March, so if you like it andwant to compete some more, you will havemost of the year to get involved with thetypes of events that we offer.

As well as the competing side of motor-sport, we will give instruction on the officiat-ing side of motorsport. We will explain whatofficials are required to put on an event, and

what each one does. Every competitor willget a go at doing some officiating, so you havean idea of what goes on “on the other side ofthe fence”. Even if you do not want tocompete, come along to give officiating a try,as the VWCV needs more motorsport officials.

Also next year we will definitely berunning Khanacrosses again. We will run aVWCV member only event, probably a monthafter the Training Day, and then run an invitedevent where other clubs are invited.Depending on demand, we will also try to getinvites to other club’s Khanacrosses.

If you are into fast, race ready Volkswagens then the “2004 Day of theVolkswagen” would not have been disappointed.

In the last few years the club race scene has grown steadily with the intro-duction of the Beetle Cup and drag nights at Calder Park raceway, Thiswas evident by the excellent club display of race cars on DOVW.

Representing the Beetle Cup class were Richard Graham in Herbie andAndrew Ermel’s beige Beetle. Both have done consistently well in thisclass, Michael and Julie Clark displayed their KDF racing beetle featuring

duel 44 weber carbs. This car has competed in hill climbs, khanacrosses, and as well doing great times.

Also on display was the 1956 oval Beetle prepared for the drags by Andrew, Stu and myself. The addition of thestinger tip to the exhaust added nicely to the 2lt motor and when started it bought people from every where to seewhat car was making all the noise.

Beetles were not the only VW on display either! Bruce Woodwood’s modified Mk 1 Golf drew a constant line ofpeople to see what was under the hood, most walks away with the look of amazement after Bruce explained themodification carried out on the power plant. We will hear more about this car when it makes it, debut at theisland in the near future.

As well as the local guys putting their cars on display, we also had some very well known drag racers from inter-state. The week before Rod Penrose and family had made the trip down to Tassie from NSW for the “VWAssociation Day” and went on to tour Tasmania for a further week. His timing to arrive at our show was impecca-ble and allowed us to put the fastest VW powered drag car in Australia on show. Powered by a 2.8lt turbocharged fuel injected autocraft motor, this car has smashed world records with figures of 8.96sec mile at155.89mph (249.42 kph) and 0-200kph in just 5.4 seconds!

Another interstate visitor was Adam Debiais who had travelled from Adelaide to try his car at Heathcote Raceway. With a paint job that most people would be envious of, just looking at this very well presented car you wouldnever guess that it has the reputation of been the fastest street legal Beetle in the country. Powered by a turbocharged 1916 fuel injected motor, this car is driven daily and is capable of times of 11.88sec at the ? mile.

With next year already in planning, we hope to see some sort of racing take place as part of DOVW. With allthese fantastic cars on display it made for one of best DOVW yet and once again without the people whobrought their cars along the display would have nothing. So a big thank you to you all, and also a special thankyou to Rod and Adam.

July 3 NCCA John Mott Sprint, Sandown, (TBC)

July 10 VMCi Morwell Hill Climb July 31 PIARC Phillip Island Race

Track, (TBC)August 8 HSCCV WintonSeptember 29 PIARC Phillip Island Race

TrackNovember 13 VWCV / HAC Hillclimb (TBC)

These dates are not all confirmed as yet, but hopefully they will be by the January

magazine, so start marking up your 2005calender. If you are interested in having a goat motorsport, and want to know more, pleasecontact me and I will explain what is required.Don’t forget, if you want to help out as anofficial at motorsport events, please contactme so I can get you started.

I hope to see you on or at the track. •

Motorsport CompetitorsThe points awarded from 1st to 8th, will be10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and for 9th onwards 1point to be awarded. This way, everyonethat competes will get at least 1 point. Thispointscore system applies to both the Openand Beetle Classes. These points will NOTbe added to the Club Championshippointscore, and will only be used to deter-mine the Beetle class and Open classwinners of the Motorkhana, Khanacross andSprint Club Championships.

All competitors will continue to get 4points as event attendance points which willbe applied to the Club Championshippointscore.

Perpetual Trophy (Overall) ChampionsThe same 10 to 1 pointscore system will beapplied to ALL competitors, irrespective ofclass, in order to determine the OverallChampion of the club in the particular

motorsport discipline. ThisOverall result at the end ofthe year will be used todetermine the PerpetualTrophy (if available) winner. So if a person competed in amotorkhana and came 1st inOpen Class and 3rd overallfor all VWCV competitors, hewould get 10 points for thatevent toward the MotorkhanaOpen Class Championship;and 7 points for that eventtoward the MotorkhanaOverall Championship andPerpetual Trophy.

Motorsport OfficialsIn an effort to encourage more members toofficiate, and to maintain the interest of theofficials we already have, the Officialspointscores are:Director 10 pointsStewards 9 pointsEvent Secretary 8 pointsScrutineers 7 pointsTimekeepers 6 pointsMarshalls 5 pointsCanteen Duties and others 4 points

If you do 2 different types of duties at anevent (e.g., Scrutineer, and then after finish-ing that, help out as a Track Marshall), thenit is proposed that you receive the points forthe highest scoring position that you partici-pate in, plus 1 (one) point. So for theexample above you would receive 7 points(as a Scrutineer), plus 1 point extra for thenbeing a Track Marshall, i.e., a total of 8points. It will be possible to receive officials

Volkswagen is taking the fight up to its competitors, including BMW's popular X5, by adding a secondturbo-diesel model to its Touareg sports off-roaderrange.

The R5 has gone on sale for $69,900 – nearly halfthe price of the range-topping V10 turbo-diesel. ALuxury R5 version will cost $78,600.

Both models are available only in six-speed automaticand powered by the same in-line five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. This 2.5-litre motor generatessimilar levels of torque to the V8 petrol model. Claimed output is 128kW at 3500rpm and400Nm between 2000rpm and 2300rpm. The pricing undercuts the more powerful(150kW/480Nm) three-litre turbo-diesel automatic BMW X5 by almost $6000 for the Luxury R5and more than $14,000 for the base model. Volkswagen spokesman Brad Leach says that the R5is being introduced as a mainstream model to take on the BMW X5 in the SUV segment. "Theidea of the model is to have a diesel engine in the sub-$70,000 segment. The V10 is in a differentsegment," he says.
