I would like to take this opportunity to ask one and all to promote the day as much as possible, for it is the people who come on the day that make it a success. Also if any one has not volunteered to help as yet and still wishes too, please let me know.

Don’t forget if you come in a VW you don’t have to enter the show and shine to park inside the grounds.

A reminder not to forget to bring your favorite model cars along to the November meeting for the model car show. Andrew and his team of intrepid judges will be using them to hone there judging skills on for the DOVW, and there will be prizes for the best models.

That’s all for now see you at the next meeting.

President’s ReportMichael Cronin, VWCV President

Welcome to the November edition of the Wagensville News.

I hope you like the new format of the magazine, Tony is doing a great job so let us know you thoughts and remember if your want a full colour copy you can download wagensville from our website.

This month saw the Bacchus Marsh swap meet which went well, although numbers were down on last year it was still a good turnout.

A big thank you to Eric and Andrew for all their efforts and to all those that helped on the day. Not forget-ting those that had swap sites on the day especially George from Classic Vee-Dub who comes all the way from Sydney.

The Day of the Volkswagen is nearly upon us, this is the Clubs biggest event of the year and arguably the biggest VW event in Australia, well we like to think so.

and competition of Lima bus drivers acquiring passengers.

The Portuguese labeled it “Pão-de-Forma” (Breadloaf) because its design resembled a cooked loaf of bread and in Denmark, the Type 2 is referred to as “Rugbrød” (Rye bread).

During the hippie era the United States embraced the VW Bus and it became a major counterculture symbol. The Type 2 could carry a number of people plus camping gear and cooking supplies and it was the ultimate symbol of freedom for many peace loving youths of the 60’s-70’s. Its boxy, utilitarian shape made the Type 2 everything the American cars of the day were not. A good majority were hand-painted, some Bus enthusiasts (especially for antiwar activists) would replace the VW logo with a painted peace symbol up front.

The Type 2 Volkswagen over time has now aren’t the reputation as a hot collector’s item and has reached a cult like status within many cultures world wide.

VW Type 2The Volkswagen Type 2 was the second automotive line introduced by German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen. It was a van introduced in 1950, initially based on Volkswagen’s first model, the Type 1, also known as the Beetle. The Type 2 is generally considered to be the forerunner of modern cargo and passenger vans.

The idea for the Type 2 is credited to Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon, who drew the first sketches of the van in 1947. Three years later, under the direction of Volkswagen’s new CEO Heinz Nordhoff, the first production model left the factory at Wolfsburg.

The Type 2 was among the first commercial vehicles in which the driver was placed above the front wheels. As such, it started a trend, at least in Europe, where the Ford Transit among others quickly

copied the concept. In the United States, the Corvair-based Chevrolet Corvan cargo van and Greenbrier passenger van even went so far as to copy the Type 2’s rear-engine layout, using the Corvair’s horizontally-opposed, air-cooled engine for power.

The Type 2 was available as a Delivery Van without side windows or rear seats (Panel Van), Delivery Van with raised roof (Highroof Panel Van), or Hochdach, Van with side windows and removable rear seats Kombi, from German Kombina-tionskraftwagen (combination vehicle) both a passenger and a cargo vehicle combined, Van with comfortable interior reminiscent of passenger cars (also called Cara-velle, third generation), Van with skylight windows and cloth sunroof (Samba-Bus, first generation only, also called Deluxe Microbus).

used as a passenger car and trans-porter, sacrificing some camping comforts (Multivan, available from the third generation on).

The official German-language for Transporter and Kombi is (“Kombinationskraftwagen”,

“Combined-Use Vehicle”).

In Germany at the time of production the VW Bus, Type 2, was scheduled to be officially named the “Bully”, but Heinrich Lanz, producer of the Lanz Bulldog farm tractor, intervened. The model was then presented as the VW Transporter and VW Kleinbus, but the Bully nickname still lives on.

“VW Bus or Bully, however, is not the only name of the passenger variant, like the Beetle, the Type 2 earned many nicknames from its fans during it’s lifetime.

The Australasian and Brazilian term for the Type 2 family is, as in Germany, the VW-Bus. In Mexico, the word “Kombi” translated into

“Combi” and in Peru, the term “Combi” is similarly adopted to “Combi Asesina” (Murdering Combi) due to the notorious recklessness

Have you ever found yourself stuck in traffic, staring at the horn button on the steering wheel of your VW and wondered what a wolf and a castle has to do with your Volkswagen?

The symbol on your horn button is the coat of arms of the city of Wolfsburg in Germany, the city where your VW rolled off the production line all those years ago.

The illustrations throughout this magazine are by Bernd Reuters, the German Press Illustrator of the 1920s who achieving notoriety with automobile renderings in magazines and brochures for several German manufacturers.

In 1948 Reuters was commissioned by German Ford as an illustrator, from 1950 until his death in 1958, he was entirely committed to Volkswagen for brochure renderings. Reuters also contributed prominently to the interior styling department as a supervisor as well as outlining elaborate VW exhibit display stands for major car shows.

This year’s DOTVW is shaping up to be one of thebiggest in the clubs history. The DOTVW has been held continually since the 1970’s and has proven to the most popular VW show in Victoria.

We have seen our event moved from place to place over the last few years as the event has grown and last years DOTVW at Yarra Glen filled the ground to capacity and at 1pm the gates had to be closed. Cranbourne race course is the perfect venue for our event this year with all parking for VW vehicles within the racecourse. There is more than ample room for all car show entrants, swappers and visitors to park inside.

The venue includes undercover trader sites for over 40 VW traders as well as the new car displays. We have also invited some new diverse and exciting trade displayers to this event including clothing retailer’s automotive service providers and many interstate VW businesses.

We still need a few people to help out with the judging on the day. If you are interested in assisting with the judging and may be able to help out on the day please contact Andrew Ermel Judging Coordinator before the next General Meeting You can contact Andrew during business hours 0419 513 749 or evenings 93691360.

A few things for entrants to keep in mind, Entry for the car show closes strictly at 11.00am. All cars including the $10 pre entered cars must be in the grounds by 11.00am. Any cars not pre entered by Friday 17th of November will pay the full price of $15 on the day for show entry. Only the driver and passenger are included in the entry price with all additional persons at $6 each.

We hope to see all those wonderful VW s with their owners there on the day.

Andrew Ermel VWCV Secretary.

JudgingThis years judging will see new judging criteria and the entry form has been made easier for the en-trants and the judges. New catego-ries have been added to our already extensive list which will include Kit bodies, Rat look and Campers. Where traditionally we have had categories which have only had one or two entries we will roll these into other categories to make for a fairer and more competitive show.

We encourage people who have cars for sale to bring them along on the day and for a fee of $10 they can be placed on display in a special “Volkswagens for Sale” area. For all those hungry for that elusive rare part we will be running the ever popular swap meet where we hope to have more than 25 swap sites. Entry for swap set up will be 8.00am with buyers entry strictly from 9.00am.

MembershipOur club membership and mer-chandise stand will offer discounts to members for some merchandise items. For sale on the day we will have copies of the Australian VW story, club lanyards and club cloth-ing. Our membership officer will be available to take new membership applications on the day.

MotorsportThe VW Club Motorsport will be on display at the DOTVW organised by our new Motorsport coordinator Chris Antonello. It’s for the young, and the young at heart. You can come along, see the cars and talk to the drivers about their cars and Motorsport.

There will be talks all day on differ-ent Motorsport topics. Some of the club’s more experienced Motor-sports participants will be giving talks on:

• Motec electronics

• How to get the most out of your VW

• How to get involved in Motorsport both as a participant and or an official

• Information on the different class and types of events that the club has and will be involved in running

For those who have their cars on display, there will be a special trophy for the best race car on display. So, bring your car, your racing memorabilia and yourself. It will be a great day, ome vehicles on this display include rally Golfs, rally Beetles, drag Beetles and Formula V cars.

See you all at the start line!

EntertainmentA clown will be providing the children’s entertainment this year but contrary to some of the rumours being spread around, he is not one of the members of the club.

Although it may be said that some of us are more than qualified for that position.

The public address system will be available for the traders during the day. Traders can make announce-ments for show specials as well as the normal club announcements such as parking and advising of the programme for the day.

Pre Paid Car EntriesThe pre paid car entries are avail-able with discounted entry price of only $10 which permits two persons (driver and passenger) as well as the vehicle a speedy access to the course via express entry gate. Pre paid entrants will only need to stop for the free show bag donated by Shannon’s insurance, who is again our co sponsors for this year. Shannon’s representa-tives will be available on the day to assist the club members with their insurance needs.

ParkingParking of vehicles will be done by car categories on the front lawns in ordered rows. This will make the process of judging the vehicle much fairer and simpler. Patrons and car show participants will also be able to see the full range of vehicles and entrants in each category.

Directions to the DOTVWTake the Cranbourne/Hastings exit which is the South Gippsland freeway M420 exit of the Monash freeway, continue down South Gippsland Freeway and take Cranbourne Phillip Island Exit which now becomes the South Gippsland Highway. See Melways map 133 J6. Cranbourne racecourse is located south of the Cranbourne main shopping precinct. Entrance to the course is via Grant Street, VW signs on major intersections will direct you to the racecourse.

This year, we have a new major sponsor, SOUTH YARRA VOLKSWAGEN who will have on display many of the new range VWs including some of the more exciting performance vehiclessuch as the GTI and Turbo Diesels. Representatives from South Yarra Volkswagen will be on hand to demonstrate and answer any questions you may have about the new cars on display.

The VWCV held a very successful cruise to the Cuckoo restaurant in Olinda to commemorate Oktoberfest on Sunday, October 29. The Cuckoo has a renowned reputation in depicting the true ambience of Bavaria, which certainly helped to promote the spirit of the occasion to make the event more enjoyable.

12 Volkswagen Club of Victoria Inc. wagensvillenews 13

Cuckoo On a fine but overcast morning 52 people arrived at he Croydon Hotel at 10am in an array of about 20 VW vehicles. Everybody appeared to be enthused and many had not yet eaten so that they could really appreciate the luncheon. After a short spell on cruise details, we set off at 10.30 in convoy for the Cuckoo via the observatory lookout.

The short cruise was rather casual because the route incorporated mostly built up areas including the outer Eastern suburbs of Croydon, Mooroolbark, Montrose, Kalorama, Mt. Dandenong and Olinda. Upon arrival at the lookout, the cloud cover and light fog began to disperse to reveal excellent photo opportunities.

The city appeared rather distant and miniature from only 35 kilometres away. About 20 minutes was spent admiring the wonderful scenery before the convoy resumed onto the picturesque Mt. Dande-nong Tourist Road.

Arrival at the Cuckoo was around 11.50am.

Once inside, a central area was allocated to us which was very accessible to both buffets! Drinks (including steins!) were ordered from the tables which added to the convenience, allowing more time to appreciate and relish the overall atmosphere and the vast multitude of foods including hot/cold and savoury/sweet dishes.

Whilst enjoying the luncheon, many noted an old, small black and white framed photograph of a split window Kombi outside the Cuckoo surrounded in snow. The photo hung just above the doorway from which we had all walked through. How very appropriate for the VWCV!

Live Bavarian music, a roving comedian, traditional bell ringing and even hand puppets thoroughly entertained us throughout the afternoon.

No one left hungry for the drive home. Most were also feeling rather tired after such a satisfying meal. A superb afternoon was had by all who attended.

Cheers to happy times.
