President’s Report

Welcome  Volkswagen  enthusiasts  to  the  start  of  a  new  club  year  and  a  new  president.  I  would  like  to  start  by  thanking  the  outgoing  com-‐mi<ee  for   all   their   efforts   over   the  past   year   and  especially   Dean   who   is   stepping   down   a@er   two  years  at   the  helm.   It  would  be  remiss  of  me  not  to  also  menAon  Lawrence  who  is  relinquishing  his  role  as  editor  with  Xavier  taking  up  the  reins,  so  expect  to  see  some  changes  in  the  magazine  as  Xavier  ex-‐ercises  his  editorial  talents.

The  AGM  went  smoothly  with  all  key  posiAons  filled  however  we  are  sAll   looking   for   two  volunteers  to  step  up  and  take  on  the  posiAons  of   Event  Coordi-‐nator  and  Motorsport  Officer.   If   you  are  interested  contact   the   commi<ee   and   we   can   explain   the  duAes.     Also   as   always  we   are   looking   for   event  ideas  and  people  to  organise  them.

Talking   of   events  we  have  had   a   couple   over   the  last   month,   there   was   the   Teddy   Bears   picnic   to

But   all   could   be   well   as   rumour   has   it   the   problem  could  finally  be  solved.    Hopefully  John  will  divulge  the  whole  story  in  a  later  magazine.

The  FederaAon  Square  display  was  well  received  with  a  lot  of   visitors  showing  interest   in  the  cars.  Good  news  is  that  we  have  been  invited  back   in  August  2013  and  2014.    There  was  also  the  VW  Magazine  VW  drag   rac-‐ing  event  at  Warwick   in  Queensland  in  which  the  Loco  Gringos  raced  two  cars  and  although  they  did  not  win,  did   quite   well   with   Andrew   making   it   into   the   top  group.  More  important  was  that  both  cars  came  home  unbroken.

Don’t   forget   the  Day   of   the  Volkswagen  on  the  6  No-‐vember   at   Yarra  Glen   Race   Course,   this   is   the   main  public  event  for  the  club  and  if  you  have  never  been  to  one  come  and  have  a  look,  this  is  probably  the  largest  VW  show  in  Australia  so  see  you  all  there.

Michael  Cronin  -‐  VWCV  President

The   VWCV   has   a   proud   history   of   successful   involve-‐ment   in   Motorsport.   This  was   facilitated   through   the  clubs  membership   of   a  collecAve   of   what   was  at   the  Ame  of   incepAon   five   Car   Clubs  referred  to  as  Group  5.

As   Ame   has   passed   the   clubs  involvement  has  waned,  and  our  membership   of   the   Confedera-‐Aon   of   Australian   Motorsport  CAMS  and  Group  5  have  lapsed.  When   I   took   on   the  roll   as   the  Motorsport  RepresentaAve  I   did  so  on  the  basis  that  there  was  an  interest   in   the   Club   becoming   involved   in  Motorsport  once  more,   and   that  a  number  of   members  where  in-‐terested  in  returning  to  the  sport.

Since  that  Ame  I  have  rejoined  the  Club  with  CAMS  and  with  Group  5  to  facilitate  the  interest  in  motorsport  for  members  of   the  club   sAll  interested   in  compeAng.  The  club  is  nearly   in  the  posiAon  to  not  only   issue  licenses,  and  conduct  events,  but  also  rekindle   the  past  Motor-‐sport  Championship   round  of   events  that  use  to   exist  within  the  club.

Due  to  a  change  in  my  circumstances  I  am  unavailable  to  conAnue  in  the  roll  as  VWCV’s  motorsport  representaAve.  There   is  further  work  to  be  done  to  complete  the  return

of   the   club   to   motorsport   acAvi-‐Aes.   At   our   last   elecAons   there  were  no  nominaAons   for   the   roll  of   Motorsport   RepresentaAve,  hence   the   posiAon   is   vacant.    Most  of  what  is  required  is  admin-‐istraAve   and   can   easily   be   ac-‐commodated  in  less  than  an  hour  to  an  hour  and  half  each  week  on  average,  most   of   it  either   on   the  telephone  or  via  E  mail,  and  other

than  occasionally   contacAng   CAMS  during   the  day   it  can  be  carried  out   in   the  evening.   There  will  be  Ames  when  more   Ame   is   required,   such   as   when   we   start   to   run  events,  but  there  will  also  be  Ames  when  none  is  need.

Unless  I  can  find  a  replacement  for  this  posiAon  all  motor-‐sport  acAviAes  related   to   the   VWCV   will  cease  with  my  resignaAon.   Therefore  we  need   to   determine  if   there   is  anyone  within  the  club   interested  in   taking  over  this  roll,  and  conAnuing  this  work?  WELL  ARE  YOU?          Contact  Bill  Malkoutzis  on  0409  439  315

Club  Event  Reports

If   you  went  down  to  Eildon  on  4  September  2011  you’d  be  sure  of   a  good  sur-‐prise  ‘cause  every  keen  VW  teddy  would  be  there  not  necessarily  in  disguise.

We  had  fantasAc  weather,  sorry  it  was  Fathers  Day  but  it  suited  some  dads.

Well  John  and  I   set  off   for   our  4th   Teddy   Bears  Picnic/BBQ   cruise  to  Eildon  but  John  didn’t  make  it  as  he  went  home  on   the  RACV  tray   truck.     Jan  had   several  kind  offers  to  accompany  others  and  ended  up  with  Mr  and  Mrs  Cronin,  alias  Mi-‐chael  and  Evan.    My   teddies  had  a  great  Ame  on  the  tow  truck.     It  must  have  looked  amusing,  a  bearded  bloke,  in  a  Kombi  filled  to  the  brim  with  teddies,  needing  help  home.

Our  keen  cruise’n  team  headed  off  to  Alexandra  outer  to  morning  tea  at  Mary  and  Ted  Jones’s  property.    A  fabulous  array  of  goodies  and  hot  drinks,  then  shown  around  Mary  and  Ted’s  vehicles,  one  VW  and  a  great  assortment  of  old  cars  from  days  gone  by.    Ted’s  set  up  is  amazing  with  quite  well  sorted  garages  and  sheds  and  all  were  saved  from  the  bush  fires  that  came  so  close.

At  Eildon,  a  beauAful  sunny,  lazy  day,  the  water  glistening  and  the  teddies  were  lined  up  in  the  shade,  of  course.    Jenny  and  I  chose  an  old  ra<y  loved  Ted  owned  by  Mary   Jones.     The   Club   donated   JB  Hi-‐Fi  vouchers  and   teddy   trophies  were  handed  out.

Well   all   the  mums   and   dads   gathered   up   the   Ared   li<le   teddy   bears   and   we  headed  home.    John  didn’t  kick  the  cat,  she  was  alright  when  I  got  home!Jan  Stevens  -‐  Kombi  Chook

Teddy  Bear’s  Picnic  at  Eildon  -‐  4  SEPTEMBER  2011

Fabulous  FederaMon  Square  -‐  25  SEPTEMBER  2011

At  the  Atrium  entrance  to  FederaAon  Square,  in  Flinders  Street  in  the  heart  of  the  Melbourne  CBD,  a  car  show  is  held  on  the  last  Sunday  of  each  month.    It  is  so  popular  that  Victorian  car  clubs  need  to  book  their  spot  with  the  manage-‐ment  of  FederaAon  Square  years  in  advance  and  there  are  now  almost  permanent  bookings.    Our   last  gig  here  was  two  years  ago  and  we  had  to  wait  for  3  long  years  to  get  that  secured.    So  you  can  imagine  the  excitement  when  we  found  out,  earlier  this  year,  that  we  were  booked  in  for  Sunday  25  September  2011.  The  adverAsement  seeking  ex-‐pressions  of  interest  went  into  the  club  newsle<er  several  months  ago  and  the  fourteen  available  spots  were  booked  within  weeks.

On   the  Sunday  morning   we  met  in   the  Russell  Street  Extension,  just  off  Flinders  Street.     Some  very   keen   and   excited  members  were   there  an  hour  and  a  half  before  the  nominated  meeAng  Ame.    The  day  was  superb,  clear   sky,   sunny   and   no   wind,   we   could   not   have   asked   for   a   be<er  weather.    By  10am  the  street  was  full  of  VWs  and  already  the  passers  by  were  in  awe,  as  well  they  should  be!    We  had  a  terrific  representaAon  of  the  Volkswagen  marque  with  a  Passat  (noAce  that  I  menAoned  your  VW  first  John),  Golf,  Rabbit,  Karmann  Ghia,  Rat  Split  Kombi,  Split  Microbus,  2  Bay  Kombi  Campers,   Split  Window  Beetle,  2  Standard  Beetles,  Karmann  Beetle,  Hot  Rod  Beetle  and,  of  course,  Herbie.

The  atrium  entrance  is  sheltered  and  provides  an  ideal  venue  for  a  small  car  show,  whatever  the  condiAons.    At  10am  the  FederaAon  Square  security  staff   started  to  marshal  us  into  the  available  spots  in  small  groups.    We  decided  to  have  the  cars  set  up  in  a  horseshoe  design  with  the  smaller  VWs  in  one  large  group  and  the  Kombies  making  up  the  balance  of  the  display.  It  looked  a  real  treat!  We  had  our  club  banners  set  up,  a  membership  table  with  lots  of  forms,  newsle<ers,  mulA-‐coloured  DOTVW   flyers,  membership  applicaAons,  a  portable  DVD  player   running   two   DOTVW    DVDs,  colouring  book  Kombi  sheets  for  the  younger  VW  enthusiasts  and  other  assorted  goodies.

Fabulous  FederaMon  Square  -‐  25  SEPTEMBER  2011  (Cont’d)

By  10.30am  we  were  all  set  to  go.     The  event  appar-‐ently   received   quite   a   bit   of   media   pre-‐publicity   as  quite  a  number  of  people  that   I   spoke  to  on   the  day  had  come  into   the  city  specifically   to   see  the  VW   car  show.    We   had   hundreds   of   interested   people   who  wandered   through   the   cars   stopping   to   talk   to   the  proud  car  owners,  asking  quesAons,  gemng  their  pho-‐tos   taken   in   front   of   the   cars  etc.   I   think   Herbie   re-‐ceived  the  most  a<enAon  but,   from  my  observaAons,  all  the  cars  a<racted  heaps  of   admirers.    I  do  remem-‐ber  that  one  young  lady  told  me  was  quite  smi<en  by  the   gleaming   green   duco   on   John   Farlow’s   beloved  Passat.    We  had  a  lot  of   interest   in   our   Kombi  with  many  people  commenAng  on  how  they  would  love  to  just  get  in  one  and  take  off  to  see  our  wonderful  coun-‐try.     Evan’s  Kombi,   full   of   so@   cuddly   toys,  was  a  hit

with  the  kids.  Peter’s  Hot  Rod  Beetle  provided  very  appropriate  60’s  and  70’s  background  music.

The  Ame  flew  by  and  soon  it  was  2pm,  with  half  an  hour  to  de-‐parture  Ame.    By  this  stage  of   the  game  my  throat  was  parched  and  in  dire  need  of  lubricaAon.    When  the  indefaAgable  Anthony  Surie  made  me  aware  that  the  nearby  café  had  supplies  of  Fran-‐ziskaner  Heff  Weissbier,  our   favourite  German   beer,   Jan   and   I  decided  that  we  should  invesAgate.  Anthony  was  on  the  money.  The  restoraAve  qualiAes  of  beer  are  truly  amazing  and  we  were  back   in  ten  minutes,   refreshed,   revitalised,   and   ready   to   pack  up.    We  were  on  the  way  home  by  2.30pm.

This  was  an  extraordinarily  successful  day   for  the  VWCV.    It  re-‐quired  minimal  organisaAon  but  gave  each  of   us  heaps  in  return.    It  was  a  day  that  was  thoroughly  enjoyed  by  all  the  VWCV  members  who  a<ended  and  the  hoards  of  public  who  came,  saw,  and  marvelled.

I  am  happy  to  say  that  we  have  the  venue  booked  in  August  2014  and  2015  but,  in  the  circumstances,  hold  off  polishing  your  VW,  in  anAcipaAon,  for  just  a  li<le  while.

John  Stevens

Warwick  Drag  Racing

With  packing  complete  and  a  good  night’s  sleep  we  le@  at  dawn  on  Thursday  and  headed  around  the  ring  road   to  the  Hume  highway   and  places  north.  Unfortu-‐nately   this  year  only  two  VWCV  cars  could  make   it   they  were  the  Grey  Ghost  driven  by   Andrew   Ermel   with  Greg   as   his   crew,   Beetle   Juice   driven   by   Steve  “Spacer”  Craven  and   supported  by   Ewan,   Tony   came  along  as  our  media  con-‐sultant  (photographer)  which   le@  me  as  crew  chief   to  try  and  keep  them  in  or-‐der,  drivers  can  be  so  temperamental.

This  year  the  trip  went  smoothly  as  we  aimed  for  Dubbo  with  the  only  incident  being   Steven’s   .trailer’s  number   plate   falling   off.  We   stopped   in  Ardlethan,   a  small  town   just  of   the  highway   south  of  West  Wyalong  for   fuel,  where  the  old  saying   it’s  a  small  world  was  reinforced  when  as  the  normally   the  cars  caused  some  interest  and  as  usual  Andrew  (a@er  more  VW  bits)   started  talking   to  the  garage  owner  who  just  happened  to  race  VW  of  road  vehicles  and  had  also  met  Bruce  Myers  of  Myers  Manx  fame,  the  original  VW  powered  beach  Buggies.  So  a@er  we  managed  to  drag  Andrew  away  we  headed  to  Dubbo  and  our  overnight  stop.

Bright  and  early  the  next  day  it  was  onto  Warwick  where  our  marquee  was  waiAng  for  us.  This  made  life  easier  as  there  was  no  need  to  set  up  camp,  all  we  had  to  do  was  drive  the  cars  in  to  the  marquee,  set  up  the  Loco  Gringos  banner  and  Ae  up  the  four  giant  cut  out  cacA  (with  much  shaking  of  heads  by  Steve  and  Ewan).

Saturday  started  with  the  street  parade  and  staAc  display   in  Warwick,  which  lasted  unAl  11:00,  then  back   out  to  the  track  for  qualifying.  All  started  well    unAl  Steven’s  second  run  when  he  stalled  and  had  to  be  pushed  back,  before  panic  rude  words  could  set  in  a  quick  diagnosis  showed  it  was  fuel  pump  problems  and  luckily  only  a  fuse  so  it  was  back  out  for  another  run.    As  the  line  up  moved  forward  the  clouds  started  to  close  in  and  as  Andrew  got  about  half  way  down  his  fourth  run  for  the  day  the  rain  came  down  in  buckets.  It  did  stop  just  long  enough  for  the  track  officials  to  nearly  get  the  track  dry  when  it  started  to  pour.  So  that  was  it  for  the  day,  with  the  rest  of  the  weekend  racing  looking  dubious  we  all  went  to  the  dinner  and  tradiAonal  tappet  cover  racing  while  listening  to  the  rain  beet  down  on  the  marquee.  Despite  the  weather  both  Andrew  and  Steven  had  good  passes  on  the  day.

We  awoke  on  Sunday  to  a  beauAful  blue  sky  li@ing  spirits  and  giving  everybody  a  new  sense  of  purpose,  a@er  a  short  delay  due  to  water  on  the  track  the  racing  was  back  on  with  some  good  Ames  being  recorded.  As  qualifying  progressed  the  clouds  kept  coming  in  with  the  ever-‐present  threat  of   rain,  luckily  it  held  of  and  allowed  the  heats  to  go  ahead.  An-‐drew  managed  a  quick  enough  Ame  to  get  into  the  Top  Shootout;  this  year  they’re  where  ten  fast  enough  cars  for  the  first  Ame  one  was  water-‐cooled.  Both  Steve  and  Andrew  managed  3  wins  out  of  4  although  once  again  Steven  failed  to  beat  Rose  we  are  not  sure  if   this  is  deliberate  but  it  is  now  two  in  a  row.    With  the  rain  holding  there  was  Ame  for  the  finals  to  be  run  and  then  it  was  load  the  cars  and  wait  for  the  presentaAons.  Then  finally  back  to  Melbourne.

Craig   Hughes  from  VW  magazine  Australia  did  another  excellent  job  of  organising  the  event  and  during   the  dinner  he  confirmed  that  first  VW  drag  meet  will  be  at  Wizard  in  Sydney  during  Feb  2012.  I  would  also  like  to  than  the  staff  and  officials  from  Warwick  drag  way  for  the  fantasAc  efforts  in  making  it  another  great  weekend  of  racing.

As  a  foot  note  don’t  think  you  need  to  have  a  special  car  to  come  to  these  events  there  are  quite  a  few  people  who  race  their  unmodified  street  car  in  fact  one  of  the  racers  who  walked  away  with  a  swag  of  trophies  was  driving  a  new  beetle.  The  secret  is  not  speed  but  consistency  and  it  is  harder  to  beat  a  slow  car  as  you  first  have  to  catch  it  and  then  make  sure  you  don’t  go  faster  than  your  dial  in  Ame.

VWCV  History  of  the  Day  of  the  Volkwagen  VictoriaLooking  back  over  30  years  of  involvement  in  the  Day  of  the  Volkswagen  (DOTVW)  Victoria  has  been  a  good  experience  for  a  Club  Historian  as  my  involvement  in  the  club  has  evolved  from  keen  new  member,  acAve  member  in  motorsport,  leaving  the  club   to  focus  on  a  family,   returning  as  an   acAve  member  to  finally  assisAng   the  commi<ee  for   almost  4  years.  This  also  reflects  the  change  in  club  from  a  strong  motorsport  hub  to  an  events  and  show  focus.

The  origins  of  DOTVW  go  back  to  the  very  first  club  concourses  held  in  the  1960’s  and  1970’s  and  of  parAcular  note  was  the  events  held  at  Lilydale  Showgrounds,  where  I  first  saw  VWs  on  show  in  the  late  1970’s.  Then  a@er  some  enthusiasm  from  this  club  in  1981,  one  of  the  big  early  shows  was  held  at  Caribbean  Gardens  in  Scoresby.  Michael  Clarke  remem-‐bers  this  well  and  strongly  holds  this  to  be  the  early  DOTVW.

Gary  recalls  in  1980  that  the  commi<ee  of  the  VWCV  decided  to  have  a  VW  drive  day.  It  was  arranged  to  drive  to  Yan  Yean  Reservoir  for  picnic  lunch.  This  was  an  unusual  event  for  the  Ame  as  the  club  had  historically  been  a  compeAAon  club.  Gary  was  new  on  the  commi<ee  and  had  been  pushing  for  such  an  event.   It  was  generally  accepted  that  only  a  few  would  a<end.  But  Gary,  from  his  daily  contact  with  VW  owners  and  knowing  their  buying  habits,  knew  that  resto-‐raAon  would  be  the  growing  interest  in  future.  These  owners  were  searching  for  an  avenue  to  show  their  cars  and  meat  like  minded  people.  The  event  was  a  smashing  success,  far  greater  than  the  commi<ee  imagined.

Meanwhile,   the  VW  Club  of   South   Australia  had  an  event   called   The  Day  of  the  Volkswagen.  At  the  next  commi<ee  meeAng  Gary  seized  on  the  turn  out  figures,  and  pointed  to  the  recent  South  Australian  event,  and  said  “see,  this  is  what  people  want.  We  should  be  catering  to  these  VW  owners”.  There  were  many  such  members  in  the  club  already,  such  as  Ken  Crook,  owner  of  the  white  oval  sunroof  in  right  hand  side  of  Yan  Yean  picture.  A@er  much  grumbling  from  the  compeAAon  set,  but  with  support  from  newer  members  such  as  Maria  Ta<ersall,  the  commi<ee  agreed.  Maria  Ta<ersall  and  Gary  were  given  the  job  of  organizing  the  event.

Maria  was   a   real   dynamo.   In   1982   she   selected   the   site   of   Eltham  Lower  Park   for   the   event.   It   had   something   for  everyone  and  a  nice  semng.  Everything  went  well  with  the  organizing.  We  adverAsed  it  well.  We  even  had  an  official  photographer  there  to  take  high  quality  memento  shots  of   the  owners  and  their  pride  and  joy.  Gary  and  Chris  are  sAll  trying  to  find  this  pho-‐tographer  as  the  photos  would  be  great  to  see  again.Gary’s  team  at  Wolfsburg  AutomoAve  built  a  fun  car  out  of  an  old  beetle  and  some  spare  Ans  of  genuine  VW  touch  up  paint.  Gary  drove  their  13  window  split  kombi  delivery  van  towing  tandem  trailer  with  the  Beetle  poinAng  backwards  on  the  trailer.  John  MarAn  in  a  wolf  suit  in  the  drivers  seat,  drove  the  mulA  coloured  Beetle  off   the  trailer  without  any  ramps  as  Gary  was  towing  it  forward.  This  took  everyone  by  surprise  and  was  a  great  talking  point.  The  wolf  then  conAnued  driving  around  the  oval  for  the  rest  of  the  a@ernoon  handing  out  lollies  to  the  kids.

The  event  went  very  well  considering  it  was  a  first  Ame  event.  Nothing  like  this  had  ever  been  held  in  Victoria  before.  The  club  picked  up  many  new  members.  Gary  gives  all  the  credit  to  Maria  Ta<ersall.  She  did  so  much  work.  Gary  found  it  very  difficult  to  wear  2  hats  at  one  Ame  on  the  day  as  sponsor  and  organizer.  My  sponsorship  gave  the  financial  back-‐ing  the  event  needed  to  get  rolling.  The  commi<ee  was  sold.  The  event  became  a  regular  feature  of  the  club  calendar.

The  next  year,  the  event  was  also  held  at  the  same  locaAon.  A  larger  Day  of  the  VW  commi<ee  was  set  up  to  handle  it  this  Ame.  Gary  was  also  on  the  commi<ee  and  although  he  thought  consistency  was  important,  the  commi<ee  voted  to  change  the  venue  the  third  year.  This  became  a  pa<ern.  2  years  here,  3  years  there.  Albert  Park,  Dandenong  Sale  yards,  Fairlea  Women’s  Prison,  Calder  Park.  Some  locaAons  were  good,.  some  bad.  Especially  on  wet  days.  Finally  Gary  convinced  the  commi<ee  to  move  it  well  away  from  September  due  to  constant  bad  weather.

The  first  Ame  the  event  was  held  at  Albert  Park,  the  Col-‐lis’  were  walking  around  admiring  the  line  up  of  cars.  Two  well  dressed  men  were  walking  in  the  opposite  direcAon  straight   toward   us.   One   had   a   droopy   mustache   and  white10   gallon   hat.   Lesley   being   an   avid   Beatle   fan  looked  at   this  man   and   thought   to   herself   ‘that   looked  like  George  Harrison’  She   remarked  as  such   to  me,  but  Gary  thought  that  could  not  be  true.  We  read  in  a  news-‐paper   arAcle  a  few  days  later   that  George  Harrison  was  indeed   in  Melbourne  for  a  few  days  at   that  Ame,  to  or-‐ganize   the  purchase  of   a  private   island   off   the  coast  of  Australia.  In  fact  it  named  the  very  hotel  across  the  road

from  Albert  park  right  near  the  event  as  being  his  place  of  residence  while  here.  Lesley  Collis  was  absolutely  convinced  that  it  was  him  who  visited  our  show  to  fill  in  Ame,  and  reviewing  the  glimpse  Gary  would  confirm  it.

The  recent  events  at  Yarra  Glen,  Cranbourne  and  back  to  Yarra  Glen  have  been  the  jewel  in  the  VWCV  Crown  and  set  up  the  club  for  the  future  to  come.  DOTVW  has  had  a  strong  life  for  30  years  with  the  event  changing  and  maturing,  but  it  has  never  lost  its  appeal  as  a  great  place  to  show  off  your  VW  and  meet  likeminded  people.  It  is  a  great  event  and  a  credit  to  the  club.  Thanks  should  now  go  to  a  long   list  of  people  over  last  30  years..  There  is  a  lot  of  work  involved  before  and  on  the  day,  but  as  they  say  many  hands  make  light  &  enjoyable  work  and  you  will  never  regret  chipping  in.  Be  a  part  of  it!
