President’s Report Dean Holden, VWCV President

Hi and welcome to the March Wagensville Deluxe. This bumper edition of the club magazine is doing double duty this month as a Deluxe edition and a program for the 2009 Bun In. I am sure we don’t need to remind you that we have the 2009 Bug In happening in Bendigo at Easter. So if you haven’t already done it, please get on the VW Club of Victoria web site and register for what will be a fantastic weekend of VW fun.

February was a busy month for the club, with much happening including the VW Magazine Australia VW Drags at Portland. This was an excellent couple of days of drag racing. The Chicago Shoot out with the local Portland drag racers was an eye opener with some seriously fast machines. The tappet cover races was a hoot on the Saturday night. The VW only drag day on the Sunday came down to a Victorian only final. Due to break outs, busted axles and trans axles, the fastest 8 air-cooled battle was between yours truly and the Grey Drag Oval of our very own Andrew Ermel.

Look out for the full report on the VWMA drag day else where in this Deluxe magazine.

The Kennett River camp out is coming up as I write this report, with many looking forward to a nice bit of camping, surfing and no doubt a few lemonades around the camp.

Into March and we have the Philip Island Classic on the 14th & 15th of March. We have a 10 car display area on the Shannons Walk again this year.

Then on the 22nd of March we have one of the biggest events on the Victorian VW calendar, the VW Jamboree at Caribbean Gardens. This is a fantastic show, with a people’s choice car show and swap meet.

And if you get tired if looking at VW’s (as if) you can head over the market and shop for a bargain.

VW JAMBOREE 2009 (Victoria) 22nd March. Show and Swap Meet starts from 9am.

12 midday is the cut off for the judging. Presentation is between 1.30-2pm.

Caribbean Gardens- Mel Ref 72 G10 Scoresby.

The final note from me is in relation to the terrible bush fires effecting Victoria during the past month. Many of us have been directly effected or know someone who has been effected in some way by this terrible tragedy. The VW Club of Victoria has been keen to provide some support to the Bush Fire Relief and at the February general meeting we proposed that the Volkswagen Club of Victoria make a $4,500 donation to the Red Cross Bush Fire Relief Fund. This donation equates to approximately a $10.00 per current member drawn from our current club funds. Thank you to all club members who voted unanimously to donate to this very worthy cause.

Still on Bush Fire Relief, I am also very happy to report that on Sunday the 22nd of March the Melburg Luft hosted a Bush fire Relief Show and Shine at Autocoupe in Eltham. This event was organised at very short notice to support a great cause, was very well attended, and raised in excess of $1500 from Raffles and Sausage Sizzles plus a growing tally of pledges. Congratulations to Mark, Josh & Phil who organised this event and I am sure they won’t mind me extending heart felt thanks on their behalf to all in the VW and Porsche car enthusiast’s community who very generously supported this worthy cause.

See you all at the Jamboree.

Swap Meet Show & Shine

Volkswagen is sending its sixth generation of Golf out into the world. The Golf is a phenomenon, regardless of its particular generation. This style icon defies all automotive and social class distinctions and has come to represent the benchmark in its segment. The Golf is the only one that always fits right, and the new one is even better fitting.

The team headed up by the Group’s chief designer, the Italian Walter de Silva, has succeeded in giving the Golf a presence, a sharpness, a power that generates even more fun. Data such as an average fuel consumption of 5.3 litres per 100 kilometres for a 103kW TDI with the manual transmission put fuel prices in their place. Upon request, the Golf can park itself nearly automatically in the city thanks to the optional “Park Assist”, and at the push of a button it can transform itself from a cruiser to a sports car when the new optional

“Adaptive Chassis Control” system is fitted.

Above all, the car exhibits a standard of quality never before attained in this price class. Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board at Volkswagen AG, sums it up: “This sixth generation of Golf cars will completely redefine the quality and comfort level of its class over broad categories, offering more customer value than ever before”.

The clear and powerful styling of the Golf being offered in the “Trendline” and “Comfortline” equipment lines is showing the entire brand the way to the future.

The Volkswagen’s acoustic properties and overall comfort tear down class distinctions. Innovative engine and transmission technologies reduce fuel consumption.

Assistance systems such as “Adaptive Chassis Control” and “Park Assist” – bring additional top technologies to the Golf class. A new ESP system, with finer response over its control range, further optimised crash properties, seven airbags including a knee airbag, the safety optimised head restraints (WOKS) that work to counteract whiplash trauma and daytime running lights provide for a maximum level of safety.

The exceptionally high value of the new Golf is reflected par excellence in its stylish design; all key body elements were redesigned:

“We have cast the Golf’s core components in a precise new mould”, explains Walter de Silva. He emphasizes this:

“The Golf is the global icon of car making. So the architecture and styling of this new model are also absolutely clear and unique.” At the same time, the sixth Golf has a sportier and more distinctive image than any previous generation of the model series. “It is more accentuated, more three-dimensional than its predecessor; with precisely defined lines and edges, and with finely proportioned flared surfaces and recesses,” said De Silva. And Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer for the brand, adds: “Every detail is uncompromisingly aimed at improving value.”

Especially in a direct comparison of generations V and VI, it becomes evident just how much the new Golf has changed. The design team – headed up by Walter de Silva, Klaus Bischoff and the Group’s director for creative design, Flavio Manzoni

– crystallized out the Golf’s essential DNA and sent it on a trip to the future.

Style features include the clarity of the first generation’s front end and the C-pillar that was perfected in the fourth generation.

The roof section now rests on a prominently contoured shoulder section. Responsible for this is a dominant curved line that extends from the headlights back to the taillights. This side profile line – which Volkswagen Design calls the

“character line” – also gives the Golf a fuller, lower stance on the road from a lateral perspective.

All body surfaces are more relaxed, more athletic. In front, the new car adopts the radiator grille of the first Golf generation that is horizontally aligned between the headlights; the grille itself is in high-gloss black. The lines of the bumper match those

of the radiator grille. Beneath this is a section with another air scoop. Also presented over a black background are the chrome light housings of the dynamically styled headlamps.

The rear too is characterized by a predominance of horizontal lines. The taillights – now very wide – are marked among other things by an unmistakably unique night design. Overall, the new Golf – in the interplay of all of its design characteristics – gives the appearance of a significantly wider, flatter and higher end car.

The car’s exceptionally high value also applies to the newly designed interior, whose refined surfaces and features completely transform class distinctions, both to the touch and visually, especially in the cockpit area. The appearance and layout of materials – as well as details such as brushed chrome accents and round instruments and steering wheels – leave the impression that one is actually sitting in a car of the next higher segment. Ergonomic properties of the car’s interior were also developed further.

For example, all controls are even easier to use. They include controls for the automatic climate control system, the RNS 510 satellite navigation system with touch screen and the power window controls that are now located further forward in the door trim, making them easier to access.

There is a common thread here: Volkswagen’s typical attention to perfection of every detail in the car. Take the example of the optional leather seats: a new, more robust leather is being used for the first time on the Golf. Or the outside mirrors: thanks to their aerodynamically optimized shape they get significantly less dirty.

They are easier to adjust from the inside, since the power mirror adjustment control is now located higher and further forward on the door trim.

The new Golf is characterized by first-class acoustic properties. A special sound-damping film in the windshield reduces driving noises, as does the newly developed seal design on the doors and side window guides. Significantly less wind noise is generated by the outside mirrors due to their new shape. Furthermore, special modifications were made to better isolate the engine and passenger compartments from one another acoustically. Quiet rolling tyres and new engine bearings round out the noise reduction program.

Making a significant contribution to the pioneering acoustic properties of the Golf is the exceptionally quiet common rail TDI engine being implemented on the Golf for the first time. Two balancer shafts eliminate undesirable vibrations. At its Australian market launch Volkswagen will be offering a 2.0 litre TDI engine in the Diesel range; it delivers 103 kW and is fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The new TDI is exceptionally fuel efficient. The manual 103 kW diesel is satisfied with just 5.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (139 g/km CO2).

Initially, two variants of the petrol engines will be offered; a turbocharged 90kW TSI and a turbo and supercharged 118kW TSI. Both petrol engines are pioneers in economy. The optimized 90 kW entry-level engine with DSG transmission consumes just 6.2 litres of premium unleaded petrol per hundred kilometres (143 g/km CO2). The turbo and supercharged engine once again makes its appearance as a prime example of efficiency, with the 118 kW manual transmission, the new Golf 1.4 TSI consumes just 6.2 litres of premium unleaded petrol per hundred kilometres (150 g/km CO2).

All petrol and diesel engines may be paired with Volkswagen’s dual clutch transmission (DSG). The two petrol engines use a new 7-speed DSG transmission while the high-torque diesel is available with a 6-speed DSG.

Pricing for the Golf remains unchanged from the previous generation which starts at $25,990 for the 1.4 TSI 90kW manual and rises to $35,690 for the 2.0-litre TDI with a six-speed DSG transmission.

The New Golf’s high customer value and comfort defy class distinctions. The New Golf design points the way to Volkswagen’s future with TDI, TSI and DSG systems to reduce fuel consumption and is the first Golf with Adaptive Chassis Control.

AGEN CLUB OFVIC

TORIAInc.

Victoria 2009 The host state for the 2009 Bug-In is Victoria, and the event is hosted by the Volkswagen Club of Victoria Inc. and Volksclub Bendigo Inc.

Bug-In 2009 celebrates a ruby anniversary being the 40th National Bug-In, and will be staged in and around the Bendigo region of Victoria.

The event is held primarily for the benefit of all VW enthusiasts throughout Australia. The host VW Club members stage each of the events on a voluntary basis.

The events include a welcome dinner, show and shine, motorsports, presentation dinner, farewell activities and in later years an extended tour that allows members to continue the celebration of the VW by touring in convoy on the much loved Australian pastime of the “road trip”.

The 2009 extended tour plans to cross the Australian Alps so after 40 years we may repeat the experience of the inaugural Bug-In and feature snow.

The 1st Bug-In was organised by the then Volkswagen Australasia Pty Ltd in Albury, NSW, on the Australia Day Weekend, 1970.

The Bug-In consisted of a race meeting at Hume Weir race circuit, a grass motorkhana on the banks of the Murray River, a car trial and a social trip to Falls Creek snowfields in northern Victoria. This has been the one and only Bug-In, (so far) which has featured snow.

The Bug-In has been hosted by the relevant state based VW Clubs over the Easter weekend ever since, moving from State to State in an anti-clockwise direction.

The Eastern Victorian Bug-In Tour 2009 is a 5 day road trip that starts on Tuesday 14 April 2009, the day after the Bendigo Bug-In 2009 finishes. The Tour covers a distance of around 1460km and showcases the wonderful sights of four key geographic assets of Victoria, namely The Murray River, The Gold Fields, The High Country and The Tasman Sea. The 2009 Tour plans to cross the Australian Alps so after 40 years we may repeat the experience of the inaugural Bug-In and feature snow.

The Tour will take us north from Bendigo to the mighty Murray River and through a number of its historic river trade towns, east to the Snowy River

country so famous in Australian folklore, south-west to the northern Victorian goldfields where fortunes were won and lost so long ago, up and over Victoria’s highest mountain and its premier snowfields, south to the East Gippsland ocean, sun and beaches then west to the Most Liveable City In The World, Melbourne.

Daily driving times on the Tour are mostly between 3 to 4 hours to give participants time for browsing in towns, sampling of locally made produce, planned sightseeing at local attractions and just plain enjoyment of the diverse and wonderful Victorian countryside in the company of like minded VW companions. Participants are encouraged to make early contact with the accommodation establishments and arrange their own personal accommodation bookings for the whole trip. AGEN CLUB OFVIC

TORIAInc.

On the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of February myself a number of our fellow VW Club of Victoria members joined VW enthusiasts from South Australia, New South Wales and long distance VW drag racers from Queensland to attend the 2nd annual VWMA VW only Drag Racing weekend at the South Coast Raceway located in the historic coastal town of Portland.

The weekend commenced with all attending VW drag racing crews getting a taste of the local drag racing activities with Friday 1/8th mile Portland street meet. Lots of Holden and Ford’s finest V8’s and sixes creating lots of tire smoke intermingled with the first runs for the weekend from a small number of drag racing VW’s. The rest of us elected to watch from the sidelines, set up camp and consume a couple of frothy ones and keep our powder dry for the practise on Saturday.

Events on the Saturday started with a VW cruise from the South Coast Raceway thru the Portland main street and then on to the Portland Harbour foreshore for a VW Show and Shine. Then it was back to the South Coast raceway for a 1.00pm start for the Chicago Shoot Out for the local South Coast drag car club and the start of official practise for the VW Drag racers. The quality of the South Coast Drag Car club cars was outstanding with some very low times and spectacular runs with front wheels off the ground well past the 60ft mark for some.

The drag VW’s in attendance proved very popular with the local V8 crowd and some excellent times were recorded.

Unfortunately the Saturday practice did see some mechanical carnage with a very sticky track taking its toll on Trans axles and axles of many of the higher HP VW’s.

For VW’s not racing, there was the opportunity for some to try the delights of some off-roading with VW Buggies in the sand dunes. Portland boasts the only place that you can legally use your VW buggy in the sand dunes in Victoria.

Saturday night was the VWMA VW only Drag Weekend welcome dinner and VW Tappet Cover Races. We had a serious tappet cover racing challenger from the ranks of the Victorian VW Club. However Victoria did not end up in the winner circle this time.

Sunday dawned clear and fine and after a beautiful breakfast it was time for an hour of final practice before the round robin VW drag racing competition began. More mechanical carnage ensued during the 1 hour free practice and the final draw saw many big names dropped out due to broken cars.

The VW only drag racing competition is a Dial In Competition. This means that you nominate the time you believe your VW will run the 1/8 mile. When you do a run, you are running against your self. The idea is to complete your run as close to your nominated time as possible. If your actual run time is closer to your nominated time than the car in the other lane, you win.

After the last hour of practise, the writer, Michael Clarke in his beautiful drag bug, John in the Stylin Beetle and Andrew Ermel in the Grey Oval went

head to head with a number of fast interstaters in the fastest eight air-cooled category.

Due to other competitors breakages and break outs (posting an actual 1/8th mile run time that is higher or lower than the nominated time) the fastest eight final was an all Victorian event with Andrew Ermel winning the final by the narrowest margin.

Great result for our club bringing home 1st and runner up in the fastest 8 air-cooled the second year up.

A full set of results and competitor list will be included in the next copy of the Volkswagen Australia Magazine. Highlights for this writer was watching and hearing Mike Kristen’s twin supercharged drag Karmann Ghia on the track. Also the super charged 1600 VW powered GoGo Mobile Dart was a spectacular sight.

The other major highlight for me was seeing the owner of 1200 powered Herbie replica circulating the track all weekend. Not breaking any track records, but having an absolute ball just competing and being part of the action.

Plans are already in place to run the 3rd annual VW only drag meeting in Portland for next year. Make sure you add it to your to do list for 2010. There is camping on site, show and shine, drag racing and off roading, so there is plenty of activity to fill the weekend.

We want to have members of the Victorian VW scene turn up in mass next year.

CTEK Presentation As the number of electrical and computer systems in our cars increases, so does the strain on our batteries. Battery maintenance has become as important as checking your oil and water and routine battery maintenance helps ensure the reliability and proper functioning of your car.

CTEK SWEDEN AB designs and develops a unique series of battery chargers for all types of lead-acid batteries for both personal and professional use.

What is your earliest memory of a Volkswagen? In the third week of September 1968 on a surfari travelling down to the Mornington Peninsula. We were in the back of a mate’s brother’s Split Kombi singing along to the Beatles song Hey Jude (released that week). At that time we were too young to have a licence so we scrounged lifts everywhere. I thought that Kombi was fantastic.

What first got you interested in Volkswagens?Surfing and the ease with which one Kombi could easily carry 5 blokes, 6 long surfboards, full camping gear and more than just a few cans of lemonade. This was later re-enforced when I did a lot of travelling in a mate’s 1974 Kombi Camper on scuba diving adventures. The driving experience in that Camper was so enjoyable I decided that one day I would have one. It took me 20 years but eventually I did.

What do you like most about Volkswagens?Reliability and personality. Whether it is a Beetle, Kombi, T3 etc. these cars seem to always chug along happily and have a personality of their own.

How and why did you become involved with the Volkswagen club of Victoria? When we purchased our 1975 Kombi Camper it needed quite a bit of work to bring it up to standard. I had no idea who I should use to get the work done so I contacted the VWCV and was given a few names to choose from. From there we did not look back.

What is your favourite Volkswagen Type you have owned?I would have to say the 1975 Kombi Camper. It has been the key to the heaps of terrific adventures that we have undertaken over the last 6 years, the places that we have visited and the very strong friendships that we have forged with many great club members.

If you could have any Volkswagen what would it be?A very good condition Westfalia Kombi.

What has been your most enjoyable experience in a Volkswagen? The 2006 VWCV Central Australia Trip. The fact that 23 club members and their families had a very enjoyable 21 days together travelling 6000km, through the heart of Australia, sometimes is difficult circumstances, without incident, was truly remarkable. If it was possible to wind back time and do it all over again I would be there as quick as a flash.

Is your unique Volkswagen enthusiasm recognised and supported by family, friends and community?Yes. I have “converted” many people into being VW, or more specifically, Kombi spotters. I get regular excited reports of sightings, cars for sale and even models purchased for me by non-VW people without any prompting.

Is your family car a Volkswagen? We use a 1991 Nissan Skyline during the week and prefer to leave the VW travelling to the weekends.

What is your profession and do your Volkswagen interests and profession cross paths?I work for the State Government. Apart from looking out my city building window all day every day trying to spot Kombies driving down Exhibition Street (only kidding!), VWs and I do not cross paths through my employment.

If you could go back in time what Volkswagen experience would you change? In the late 60’s a good mate of mine inherited an early Oval Beetle, from memory it might have been as early as 1954. We did not give that car the respect it deserved and it had a very short life thereafter.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how much of Volkswagen nut are you?Probably a 9.
