Welcome to the July edition ofWagenesville News.

The big news of last monthwas the cruise to the DromanaDrive-in to view the movie“Herbie – Fully Loaded” onSaturday the 25th of June. A large gathering ofVolkswagens of all types met atthe Brandon Park ShoppingCentre late in the afternoon, andthen proceeded in convoy downthe Monash Freeway on toHastings Road, through Baxterand then on to the MoorooducHighway through to Dromana. With so many cars involved itwas difficult to all keep together, and unfortunately a few cars losttheir way. Thanks to people whochased those cars up and showedthem the way to Dromana.

The Volkswagens took upapproximately 90% of the drive-in at whichHerbie was screening with all the non-VWcars at the back of the drive-in. It was asight to behold when looking from the backtowards the screen, all the VWs watchingHerbie. It looked just like the picture on thecover of the June Wagensville News.

We also had a very good view as the sunset in the west and of the junction whenthree planets, Mars, Venus and Saturn were

Richard showed persistence and dedicationto ensure the event was a success. Theadvertising of the event through radio andthe newspapers was great and this certainlycontributed to the great attendance. Well done Richard!

Two other Herbies joined Richard’sHerbie on the night, one from Andrew Ermeland Xavier Larkin.

The next General Meeting on Tuesdaythe 19th of July will be held at the newRACV Club at 501 Bourke Street. This facili-ty is brand new and a big improvement overthe old RACV Club. Details on location, andhow to get there are shown in this month’smagazine on page 22.

I draw your attention to the dress codewhich will be required, and all that attendmust meet this requirement.

I would also like to thank the clubmembers who have forwarded articles forthe Club magazine. The inclusion of these is really making our magazine great readingand is setting a very high standard.

Upcoming events this month are thebowling night on the 15th of Julyat the Altona North Complex andthe Dyno Day at Australian VWPerformance Centre on the 30thof July.

I’ll see you at the nextGeneral Meeting, the first in thenew RACV Club. •

KombiRecreation

> John Scott on recreating his unique Kombi conversion...

My brother Ray and I builtour original VW van back inthe mid sixties - at the timewe had two identical Kombivans in our TV and electricalbusiness.

The van was lowered 6inches all around and wasfitted with 13” x 6” frontwheels and 14” x 7” Falconwheels on the rear. Themotor was a Ford 292 Culin, with new stock and sportstwin 3” stainless steel pipesemptying from the extractorsout each side of the van.

Power was transmittedthrough a three speed autoto an F100 Ford diff. andNorg Worner rear end.

I used to drag race andhill climb locally, and the van was a rollingadvertisement for our family business. Totalcost of the modifications back then wasapproximately $200-$300.

The van had a locked diff. for the dragsand standard for hill climbs. The clutchpedal was used for the front brakes and thebrake pedal for the rear brakes.

I sold the Kombi back in the early 1970swhen kids started to arrive. Unfortunatelythe young bloke who purchased it rolled itover and wrote it off. (He was not hurt). The van appeared in about a dozenmagazines from the period which I haveheld on to.

Recently I was persuaded into recreat-ing this unique vehicle for our local vehiclemuseum which is currently being estab-lished. I am trying the build it exactly thesame but with a few modifications.

> Top - “Me” in action at the Boisdale Hillclimb - late‘60s • Progress so far on the current van body...Opposite page - the donor vehicle for the new engine, and the new mounted motor with no extractorsPhotos courtesy of John Scott.

17

For example, 292 Ford motor - replacing itwill be a 302; lever action Ford Zephyrshocks - using standard Volkswagen shocks;14” Falcon rear wheels - 16” Falcon rearwheels to be used; single coil fan - twin EBFalcon unit to be used; GIG locked diff. -Ford Fairlane LSD unit to be installed. All I have left to do is paint the body whiteand have the van sign written. It is a muchmore expensive proposition building the vanthis time round, but my son Trent and I have been doing all of the work ourselves.

I am after a few components, andwondered if anyone out there could be ofany assistance in pointing me inthe right direction to source theseitems. I need a rear bumper withmounts, front door seals, rearengine flap seal, and blinker lightgaskets (x2) for the front. Can anyone help? You cancontact me on 03 5147 1251. •

MotorsportNews

> Jon Edsell - VWCV Motorsport and Group 5

You may have noted I have only been to onemotorsport event this year (the Training Day). This has been due to work and family commit-ments. So, with the Annual Elections comingup, I can report that I will not be able tocontinue as the Motorsport Co-ordinator forthe Club. The job is fairly involved and cantake up a lot of time at various times of theyear, but it is good fun, and it is all worth theeffort when you see the event come off well.So if you are interested please talk to me, andconsider being nominated at the Elections, and, of course I will be available to help, butnot to the same extent that I am trying tomaintain at the moment .

Motorsport was the primary reason for theformation of the Volkswagen Club of Victoria,in 1954, as a result of the success of VWs inthe Round Australia trials. Subsequently,Motorsport has been a major part of the club’sactivities for most of the Club’s 51 years. VWsare still competitive in various types of motor-sport, motorkhanas in particular (JohnRosengrave and his Mark 1 Golf are testamentto that, being Australian motorkhana champi-ons in their class, in the recent past). But youdo not have to be champion to enjoy yourself, just have fun, learn a bit about how your carresponds under different driving conditions ina safe and controlled environment.

I do not want to see Motorsport disappearfrom the club scene, so if you can help outplease put your hand up. That is what makesthis Club so good - it embraces all forms ofvehicular activity, from car shows to sprintswith everything in between catered for.

Concours d’élégance> A discussion by L. Petschack

I'd be surprised if there weren't a number of club members who, even though they may not take part in any clubfunctions or events, always place great value in the club magazine. If you are like me, you always read"Wagensville News" from cover to cover, taking note of the sterling work that has gone into producing it and notingwith interest particulars of past and coming events, technical articles, items for sale and so on.

As well, you also feel that a professionally presented magazine such as ours is a great advertisement for theclub. Also, like me, you've noticed the term "concourse" appearing from time to time. This term always makes methink of the French term "concours d'élégance". Events to which this label is applied seem to be "a parade of cars or other vehicles, prizes being awarded to the most elegant, best designed or best turned out" and that happens to be the definition which Collins have decided upon for their dictionary. But, I wondered, is the termconcourse being used to indicate a different type of event? So I directed an enquiry to "those whoknow" and received a response running along these lines. "Well, we're a young club and some of theyounger members obviously couldn't be expected to be as well versed as older members". So I took itas being a simple matter of putting the things down on paper to clear up the misunderstanding.

No doubt, many would react by saying that "concours d'élégance" is an unwieldy term andwould wish to follow the widespread practice of abbreviating to term to "concours" and I suppose thatsuch a practice is acceptable on the basis that folk who hear or see the term are likely to be motoringenthusiasts and will have no doubt as to what is meant. •

All visitors and invitedguests to our club meetings will be able tosign in at the front entry reception area.

The new car park entry is located inChancery Lane, a newly created road for theRACV Club. It runs off Little Collins Streetand is only 150mts further up from the oldcar park entry. Chancery Lane is two wayand can be accessed from both Little CollinsStreet and from Bourke Street. Car parkingis available for 460 cars within the buildingand there will no longer be any valetparking for VWCV members. Members candrive up the boom gates and take a ticket

from the machine, park your own car andpay before you leave the building. A flatrate of $5 applies for entry after 6pm withday rates applicable prior to the 6pm entry. As most VWCV members are now driving into club meetings the new parking arrange-ments are very good and with 460 carspaces there should be ample space for all.

The new Henty room is located on thefirst floor and is where the monthly clubmeetings will be held. Meals are availablefrom the all new bistro located on theground floor just on the right inside of themain entry at Bourke Street. Adjacent tothe bistro is the coffee lounge area. Mealswill need to eaten in the bistro prior to the8pm club meeting or after the club meetingfinishes, as meals cannot be ordered form oreaten in the new Henty Room. This is achange for the previous meals arrangementbut will make the club meetings mucheasier to run as meals will not be coming inand out whilst the meeting is in progress. Also members will be paying for their meals

Page 23: Wagensville JULY 05

as they are ordered in the Bistro and willeliminate the frequent problem that occurswhen meals are unpaid for at the end of theevening.

Drinks may be taken into the HentyRoom and can be purchased form the “WineBar” located on the first floor adjacent tothe Henty Room. The new Henty Room hasfull audio visual equipment and tables andchairs. The room will seat up to 75 peoplewith comfort and is ideal for conducting ourmeeting in private.

The RACV has dress codes of which wehave already advised our club members of.So just a refresher of the dress requirementsfor the RACV Club:• No shorts no track suits• No singlets and no T-Shirts• No thongs, sandals or work boots• Neat and tidy jeans with no tears!• No hats, caps or bennies to be worn

inside the club areasThe RACV building is absolutely fantas-

tic and I have no doubt that the VWCVmembers will be impressed with the newfacilities and will have club rooms to enjoyfor many years to come. We hope to havean RACV representative available on ournext club meeting to give ourmembers a tour of the new build-ing and give our members anopportunity to also becomemembers of the RACV Club andshare in many of the wonderfulfacilities the RACV has to offer. •

Urgent NoticeSafety HarnessFailure - FIA D-203/T98> CAMS Media Release - 6/2005

CAMS has been notified of a safety harnessfailure. This failure occurred during a colli-sion. The harness is a 6-point type and wasmanufactured by "Taiwan Racing Products Company Ltd". It has the FIA homologationnumber D-203/T98. The FIA have beennotified.

At issue is the adjuster buckle of the lapbelt which on the information received to dateappears to have been assembled incorrectly on some harnesses with thishomologation. This harness is apparentlysupplied under a number of brand names, and it is understood that there are severalsuppliers in Australia that sell this harness withtheir own brand name.

It has been confirmed that a number ofsimilar unsold harnesses in stock have alsobeen incorrectly assembled, although not all.It is possible that these same harnesses havebeen supplied to other retailers in othercountries.

CAMS is issuing this notice asking allcompetition vehicle owners in Australia toinspect their harnesses. The homologationnumber appears on a label attached to eachstrap of the harness. If harnesses with theabove homologation number are fitted, CAMSadvises that they not be used until they havebeen returned to the point of sale for inspec-tion. It is possible that further action may betaken in regard to these harnesses so pleasecheck the CAMS website regularly. •

Aircooled VW EngineA Survival Story

> Bill Malkoutzis on the downfall of the air-cooled engine in Australia...

Continued from last issue...At the same time all of this was going onthere were numerous other legislationchanges being introduced, like side intrusionbeams, head impact, crashworthiness, instru-ment panel effects in accidents, brakeperformance standards etc. All of this wouldbe giving the VW board pretty clear signalsthat the limitations of the muchloved type 1 Beetle were toogreat and costly to overcomeand still manufacture aneconomically viably small lowcost car.

So in the end the worldindustrial communities outgrew the Bug and all its inher-ent and much loved attributesof simplicity durability andeconomy (not to mention howcute it was!). The bug did continue to bemanufactured as a convertible in the USA butit used electronic fuel injection early catalyticconverters along with unleaded fuel. The onlyreason that it survived for those extra years asa convertible was the demand, and peoplethat were prepared to pay the premium cost ofdevelopment of an emission engine and putup with the lack of power. This demand quick-ly evaporated as the cost of the car obviouslycould not be easily justified and volumesdropped to such a degree it was not viable tocontinue the manufacture of the vehicle. It didcontinue in other countries in close to its 1976configuration only because of the hostcountry’s resistance to adopt comparativeworld’s standards either because they didn’tneed to or they could not afford to do so.

And so in 1976 the Volkswagen manufac-tured aircooled Beetle died in Australian, 28years later its manufacture disappeared off the

face of the earth, in 2004. Question is will thetooling be shipped to Poland and the Beetlereborn as a low volume cult car for the rich?Who knows, but I am sure there is more histo-ry yet to be written on the Beetle.

The next chapter in the VW aircooledengine story moves us to the mid eighties in Australia. The T2 Transporter Type 4, based

1700-2000cc engine carried themuch love bay window trans-porters into the mid seventiesand early eighties. This enginesurvived because of its moresophisticated design and theworld’s resistance to imposepassenger type car emissionstandards on commercial basedvehicles. However this waschanging, as in Australia, moreand more, the rest of the

modern world was expecting that commercialbased vehicle should also comply withemission standard like passenger cars. Again as in the case of the beetle, a stranglehold was being placed on the next generationof VW aircooled engines, by the legislatednext generation of emission standards. NowVolkswagen was looking to unleaded fuelsand even more stringent tail pipe emission.Emission levels that were in the order of halfthat of the past. Again the challengers were tocreate and engine that emitted lower exhaustlevels to a much tighter band of variation. The careful metering of fuel was required to achieve these targets. These temperaturevariation is where VW would have struggled, the operating temperature of the enginefluctuated greatly as the air would giveimmediate response based on engine speed. However by adding a water-cooled jacket, it worked like a “shock absorber” to slow the

Page 25: Wagensville JULY 05

25

variation in temperature fluctuation and limit-ed the lower and upper temperature limits, inother words it operated in a much smallertemperature operating band. Hence why theT3 Transporter was water cooled, whereemissions standards were required, andaircooled where they were not. Water cooledwas more expensive, aircooled was cheaper. So again the air cooled engine was pushed outof our lives by community pressure whichresulted in government legislation. This storywould repeat itself again the case of the 911Porsche, that initially were able to absorb thecost of engineering the air cooled motor tocomply to the ever changing emissionstandards until 1998 when water cooling wasthe only option to meet the ever changingstandards of the times.

As a foot note, vehicle emissions in theirbasic form consist of Carbon monoxide andhydrocarbon discharges from the exhaust pipeor from the fuel tank. Carbon monoxide is

basically unburnt fuel that exits the exhaustsystem, and hydrocarbons are either unburntfuel evaporation from the fuel tank, or unburntfuel exiting the exhaust pipe. Back with pre1974 vehicles, emission standards basicallyrequired that a car discharge no more than4.45% Carbon monoxide, (if any limitation wasapplied at all), and hydrocarbon emissionswere free with thousands or tens of thousandpart per million being discharged to theatmosphere either from the fuel tank or outthe exhaust pipe. Today’s vehicles discharge 0to 0.1% Carbon monoxide, a worn vehicle thathas more than 160, 000 kilometreswould discharge no more than 0.2%and hydrocarbon discharges wouldbe well below 50 parts per million. So cars of today operate at greaterthan 40 times (most likely muchmore) cleaner than their pre 1974predecessors. •

HerbieOverloaded

> From Richard Graham and Herbie...

Leading up to the big drive-in night it was a very hectic 2 weeks. After receiving about100 phone calls for the upcoming week I wasreally starting to wonder what kind of turnout we were going to get for a cruise toDromana Drive-in to see “Herbie - FullyLoaded.” After giving out heaps ofbrochures, having GOLD 104 FM, 101.1 MIXFM and ABC radio broadcast it all overMelbourne, and placing the ad in the HeraldSun, I soon started thinking this could be a huge event.

I arrived at Brandon Park that Saturdayafternoon to see an explosion of VWs every-where. There would have been forty cars allwaiting to go. Then I get a phone call fromAndrew Ermel telling me that there wereanother forty cars down the other end of theshopping centre car park. I was blown awaywith the response.

A quick briefing was given and we allheaded off at 4pm to cruise. Once on thefreeway the line of cars and headlightsbehind me stretched beyond the horizon. The line would have been 5 to 6kms long. It could have been mistaken from a scenefrom “Herbie Rides Again,” in which Herbiegathers a large number of other Beetles tothwart the villain in the movie.

By 5pm we arrived at the drive-in andbegan moving in. We had to wait for somecars that went off course while headingdown but they made it before the moviestarted. We had 3 Herbies and one HerbieKombi. The entire car park of cinema 1 wasfull of Volkswagens. It was an awesome

the new Herbie movie and make it amemorable night for both themselves as wellas all the kids. It was great to see so manypeople brave the cold and stay for the wholenight.

For many of us including myself, thiswas the first time seeing a Herbie movie atan actual drive-in, as the last movie wasshown 25 years ago. But for some it broughtback great memories when they got togeth-er and watched one or more or the original 4 movies. I believe there was a smallgathering by this club down in 1980 to see“Herbie Goes Bananas.” Unfortunately thedrive-in it was shown at is now long gone,as well as many of the members that werethere on the night. It’s good to see somestill remain though to pass on these stories.

The movie was great, theatmosphere was fantastic and theattendance was unbelievable.Thank you to all that came and I hope you enjoyed the night asmuch as I did. And a big thanksto all that helped me advertisethe event and run it. Couldn’t doit without you guys and girls. •

Herbie Goes to Northland Over the weekend of June 18-19, to co-incide with therelease of the Herbie movie, “Herbie - Fully Loaded” theVWCV was asked if they could provide a Herbie replicafor display over the weekend. The Ermel’s obliged, working around the clock to have their Herbie ready fordisplay. It was immaculately turned out, and certainlyattracted much attention from shoppers at Northland. Theweekend was also a great opportunity to promote theclub, with many members assisting with the handing out ofbrochures and other club material. Many thanks to every-body who helped out.

The VWCV were presented withfree tickets to the movie as a thank youand invited to a screening on theWednesday night (23rd June) which wasenjoyed by all who attended.

Weekend atWagga 2005

> The VWCV’s long weekend trip to Wagga Wagga by Matt Kinsey

Over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend2004 the VWCV ran a joint cruise up toWagga Wagga in association with theRiverina Volkswagen Club. The weekendwas such a success that it was back bypopular demand again this year!

Around ten cars embarked from the ShellService Station at Kalkallo on the northernoutskirts of Melbourne for the long trip upto Wagga, with Kombis being the vehicle ofchoice for the weekend. The weather wascold, wet and miserable - and it remainedthis way for almost the entire trip up there.

After a brief fuel stop at Glenrowan, atasty lunch was enjoyed by all at theCommercial Club in Albury. It was anuneventful trip up, with nobody experienc-ing any mechanical issues with their cars.

We arrived at Wagga around 5pm andwere greeted by members of the RiverinaVolkswagen Club, who had laid on awelcome afternoon tea. They truly excelledwith this - so much so that I couldn’t eatmuch at the “all you can eat” restaurantwhere we went to for dinner that night.

Most club members stayed at the CityPark Motel, not far from the centre ofWagga. From here the Ermel’s kindlyprovided Redbus as our means of gettingaround town for the weekend. Severalepisodes of “Kombi cram” resulted from this- ie. fitting as many people into a Kombi asyou possibly can. I think 15 was the recordfor the weekend. People were amazedwhen we pulled in to see how many peopleactually came out of the Kombi - many

musing that it must be bigger inside than out.

On the Sunday we cruised with theRiverina Club to Monte Cristo - a hauntedhouse at Junee, which was about a halfhours drive away. The house was exquisite-ly presented to represent life in the 1880s,and it was indeed rather dark and spooky.

After lunch some members thenproceeded to a local classic car show, wheretheir cars soon became the centre of atten-tion.

The Riverina Volkswagen Club providedanother excellent feast on the Sunday nightwith the farewell dinner - as usual withthese things the weekend was over far tooquickly.

The weekend was extensively coveredby the local television station WIN. ClubVice-President Richard and Herbie briefly

became local media celebrities, with Richard being interviewed, before everyone reluctantlyheaded back home.

We did a bit of car swappingon the way home, with differ-ent members giving othermembers’ cars a bit of a testdrive. (Ross’s car was very niceto drive indeed!)

Thanks should go to SusanPrice and the whole of theRiverina Volkswagen Club fortheir hospitality overthe weekend, andagain to RichardGraham for organiz-ing another excellentweekend away. •

The VW Club of Victoria isauthorised by VicRoads toissue Classic and Historicplates to financial clubmembers with VWs over 25years old. The main objectiveof the CH permit system is toenable club members aminimal registration feebecause of the vehicles limitedusage.

The club requires all CHvehicles to undertake a safetycheck every two years. Safetychecks are similar to roadwor-thy checks. A roadworthycertificate can be accepted inlieu of a safety check. Theappointed club technicalofficers conduct safety checksat Tech Days and by appoint-ment.

A safety check ensures thatthe CH plate vehicle is safe todrive on club gazetted eventsand approved limited usage. Italso encourages the mainte-nance, restoration and preser-vation of all types of VWs.
