VWCVTech Day

> Dave Evans reports on the VWCV Tech Day about legally modifying your vehicle...

A motley crew of VWCV members descend-ed on Hillcrest Road in Eltham North tolisten to the Club’s resident engineeringguru give us the basic information on whatshould be done to ensure a modifiedvehicle of any size, capacity or age canbecome a legal vehicle for street use.

Bill Malkoutzis is a qualified VASEngineer, with the knowledge and equip-ment on hand in his well equippedworkshop to allow him to certify a vehicleas being mechanically sound and safe foruse on public roads.

Those who attended would, undoubted-ly, have come away with a new awarenessof the statutory requirements for testing a modified vehicle for conformity toAustralian Design Rules (ADRs) andother State requirements.

Bill gave us pratical demonstra-tions on the testing method formeasuring torsional rigidity, using aFormula Vee as a model, with anassortment of dial gauges andcompression measuring equipment.

Many complex aspects oftesting were covered, from braketesting, approved wheel and tyresizes, to mounting of safetyharnesses and seat belts into theoptimum locations for a specific car.Bill’s Porsche was also looked overas another example of legality ofride height and seat belt mounting.

Much of Bill’s work of late, under his trading name of “Talk

Torque Automotive” has been the testingand certification of a variety of hot rods, many Chevrolet and Ford based, some ofwhich require unexpectedly large outlays ofcash by the owner, for such mandatoryitems as full X-rays of welded joinsanywhere on the car.

To sum up the afternoon, I felt it was one of the most inter-esting “Tech Days” the VWCVhas held. I would like to thankPaul Blacker for his part in organizing the event, and thanksto Bill for opening his workshopfor the day. •

General MeetingMini Auctions

> By Andrew Ermel

Every General Meeting from now on willfeature a ‘mini’ auction after the first break. Those who came to the last GeneralMeeting had the opportunity to buy somevery desirable VW bits and pieces on offer. These items included an oval Beetle steer-ing wheel, hard to obtain books, car modelsand some rare memorabilia.

The idea of the mini auction is to giveyou the opportunity to sell items to clubmembers rather than having to advertisethem. You can view the items during thebreak and speak to the potential sellers andbuyers. Because it is an auction, it giveseveryone a fair go at buyingitems. Also the club benefits ifthe item exceeds the seller’sreserve price.

How does it work?If you have any bits and piecesthat you want to sell, bringthem along to the generalmeeting. The items must besmall enough to be carried, reasonable condition and aboveall, clean. There will be amaximum of six items per miniauction. If more than six itemsare to be auctioned, the auction will belimited to one item per seller. You set theprice you want for the item, and thisbecomes the reserve - and what you receivefrom the sale. The item is then auctioned tothe members during the meeting. If the itemfails to reach the reserve, it is withdrawn

from sale. If the itemexceeds the reserve price, you get the reserve amountand the club get the remain-der as a form of a donation. Also you may havesomething of value that youwish to donate to the clubfor auction, andthe club would bemost appreciative.

So get those surplus itemsand make yourself some money.Remember the items can be ofanything of interest to other clubmembers. •

VW HasProton Plans

> From carsguide.com.au - 10/2005

A plan to bring cheaper Volkswagens toAustralia is not dead yet. The German giantpitched a plan at the start of this year thatwould see Malaysian carmaker Proton buildVolkswagen cars for the Proton is locked indebate about the deal, which would see VWbuy a large number of company shares.VW brand group chairman WolfgangBernhard, is waiting for Proton's decision."We made offers, we made proposals, but itneeds to be worked out from their side,"Bernhard says.

If the plan proceeds, Proton may becommissioned to build other models, includ-ing the medium-sized Passat.

As it stands, all Volkswagen models areimported from Europe. VW Australia experi-mented with a small Polo sedan from China, but sales were poor and the company willnot order any more.

While VW was in the middle of negotia-tions to buy a share of Proton, Porschebought about 20 per cent of shares in VW,giving it the majority share.

Bernhard says some shareholders areconcerned Porsche will take advantage ofVW, using its technology and low productioncosts. He says VW will draw up a contractwith Porsche to ensure this doesn't happen.Porsche and VW have worked togetherpreviously, including the development of the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg Off-roaders, using the same base to save costs.

"We are going to do business as we havein the past with Porsche, but it will be atarm's length as it would with any thirdparty," he says.

Bernhard was in Sydney last week forthe launch of the Polo GTi, a$26,990 hot hatch. He thinks thecar is an alternative for driverswho want good performance, butare sick of paying the fuel bills forbigger engines. The Polo GTi hasa 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinderengine with 110kW. •

New European Number Plates...VicRoads has recently released a new type of numberplate called 'Euro Plate.’ These plates have a similarlayout and dimensions to the number plates made inEurope thereby making them ideal for European carssuch as the ones owned by VWCV members. These plates complete your cars European feel, especially since the plate dimensions suit the car design. To mark the release of the 'Euro Plate' a special offer has been prepared for VWCV members. This promotion provides a 10% discountfor all members who order the Euro-Plates through your club. This would mean that a standardEuro Plate would cost $355.50 (normally $395) and a personalised Euro Plate would cost$625.50 (normally $695). Contact VicRoads for details... •

Electronsin the Car

> Everything you wanted to know about your car’s battery by Bernd Wachs...

The function of the battery in the car is tosupply electrical energy required for variouscar components such as distributors, lights, windscreen motors, engine managementsystems, fans etc. It can also supply powerfor people’s individual requirements such asradios, TVs, CD players, the K-thumpermachine, safety lights, fridges, electric winch-es etc.

The right type of battery should bechosen so that the appropriate energy require-ments can be met. Here is my simple but notdefinitive guide on battery choices. If youhave a car which has a petrol carburetor, doesnot have an electronic management system, and you just drive it reasonable regularly thenthe normal size battery is usually goodenough. If your car has an engine manage-ment system then buy the largest battery thatyou can fit safely in the battery compartment. The reason I say this is that as the vehicle’selectronics and connected gadgets increase, the amount of energy is drained from thebattery and the system. The more a lead acidbattery is discharged and kept in a dischargedstate the more you shorten its life. Car batter-ies are further divided into two groups.

The first is a cranking type and the otheris deep cycle. The cranking style battery isdesigned to supply a large amount of currentin a short time for devices such as startermotors. This battery usually has a largernumber of plates but they are usually ofthinner construction. The second type is adeep cycle battery which is designed tosupply a reasonable amount of current but

over a much longer period of time. This typeof battery has usually fewer but thickerplates.

The average life of a normal car lead acidbattery is between 2 to 3 years. If you get 4years you are doing well, anything above thatis exceptional. It is also recommended thatyou boost charge the car battery on a regularbasis, 2 to 3 months, using a battery charger. This should only require a couple of hours. You can usually tell when the battery ischarged when the meter indicates less than 1 ampere is being supplied, or there are one ortwo light bars lit up on the battery charger.

Batteries come in different voltages andcurrent ratings. Car batteries are usually 12volts these days but some cars ran on 6 volts.Others can also run on 24 volts. A battery ismade up of a number of individual cells joinedin series. Therefore a 6 V battery contains 3 cells in series, a 12 V battery contains 6 cells.

When we say that we have a 12 V batterythis does not mean that it works at 12 V, itnormally works at about 13.8 V which ismaintained by the alternator / generator inthe car. When the engine is off the batteryvoltage level drops down to about 12.8 volts. When a battery is discharged the batteryvoltage drops down to about 10.5 volts. Thebattery voltage should not be used as adefinite indication on how healthy a battery is,but as a guide. The true indication of abattery’s health is done using a hygrometerwhich will be covered later in anotherepisode.

Battery terminal corrosionAnother major problem that affects carelectrics is corrosion. It's that white powderthat decides to congregate around the batteryterminal and the cable connector to annoy youat the most inconvenient time. This problemcan be reduced with a little work. Firstlydisconnect the cable/connector from thebattery and clean it off with a wire brush.Make sure that none of the powder gets intothe battery liquid. Now that has beenremoved mix in a bowl water with Bi-Carbonate of Soda (Baking Soda) and wipe itover the battery terminal, cable and theconnecter. This will need to be done a coupleof times. Remember to wear your safety glass-es and chemical gloves. When the bubbling/fizzing has stopped give it a final wash withwater. Let it dry. Make sure that none of thecleaning liquid mixes with the battery acid.To minimise the corrosion returning go andget the vaseline. What is good for the baby'sb.. is good for the battery terminals, and giveit a light coating. Use a brush to make surethat the connecter and any exposed cablegets a thin coating all over. Reconnect thecable to the battery and things should workbetter. It is a good idea to apply a thin coatingbefore the corrosion starts.

I hope this makes things a littleclearer now about batteries. Moreinformation about batteries later.

Next month we will coveranother device that an electron hasto pass through in its life as anelectrical worker. •
