Artists’ StudioSima Gonsai16 February — 10 May 2009

During her residency, Birmingham-based film maker and ‘cyclist explorer’ Sima Gonsai will be exploring all corners of the Walsall borough on her bike. By following the routes and directions suggested by local residents, Sima will create an alternative map of the town based on personal stories, collective memories and local folklore.

Using the gallery as a starting point, where would you suggest Sima cycles

to next – where should she go, what should she see? What’s the story to your route? Get in touch by dropping into the Artists’ Studio, visitingmyspace.com/cycledialogues or by waving to Sima as she cycles down your street!

Open studio events:Saturday 7 March, 2pm - 4pmThursday 30 April, 2pm - 4pm

Free, everyone welcome.

Artists’ ProjectsThe Artists’ Projects programme features a number of artistic interventions throughout the gallery and also incorporates the Artists’ Studio, where resident artists are invited to create new work in response to the gallery and its environment – often collaborating with gallery visitors in the process. The studio is an active, lively and welcoming place within the building and an environment for discussion and the exchange of ideas.

OutsidersBlu, David Choe, Miranda Donovan, Faile, Conor Harrington,Todd James a.k.a REAS, Paul Insect, Invader, Lucy McLauchlan, Antony Micallef, Polly Morgan, JR, Vhils, Jonathan Yeo, Zevs5 December 2008 — 25 January 2009

Outsiders brings together the work of fifteen international artists who have emerged from the edges of the mainstream art world to produce some of the most exhilarating and original works on the contemporary scene today.

Some of the artists in the exhibition make their mark quite literally outside, on the walls of the towns and cities across the globe; others work solely indoors, in a more traditional way. A handful have received no formal art school training. Collectively, the artists share a desire to exhibit work in an environment which directly resonates with their audience. These artists cannot be grouped together stylistically but are linked more readily by attitude.

Featuring video, sculpture and work created directly onto the gallery walls, Outsiders mirrors the ethos of the Lazarides Gallery with which all the artists are affiliated. This unique operation has challenged the definitions of ‘urban’ and ‘street’ art by bringing the outside, in.

In association with Lazarides Gallery, curated by David Thorp.

Outsiders coincides with the launch of the publication Outsiders: Art by People, compiled by Steve Lazarides which is available to purchase atThe New Art Gallery Walsall during the course of the exhibition priced £14.99.

Garman Ryan Exhibitions

Jacob EpsteinIllustrations to the Old Testament

28 February — 31 May 2009

This fascinating exhibition of delicate yet striking watercolours and drawings engages with Epstein’s unusual visionary interpretation of the Old Testament. The artist and sculptor became completely absorbed in the ‘whole new world passing before him’ and exhibited fifty four illustrations at the Redfern Gallery, London in 1932.

The racial aspect of the illustrations created a large amount of controversy and scandalised the critics at the time. It was felt that Epstein’s interest in biblical illustration was specifically to depict ‘the racial epic of the Jews as it emerges from the historical and legendary books of the Old Testament’. The New Art Gallery will be exhibiting a selection of these unique interpretations of such a powerful and traditional subject.

TIME16 January – 22 February 2009

This exhibition showcases artistic talents of young people in Walsall in full time education. Students studied the Garman Ryan Collection and responded to the theme of time in imaginative and innovative ways. This display is a selection of their artwork.
