PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Happy New Year Mission! Out with the old and in with the new! What a year 2014 was… so many wonderful events happened in our community… WELL DONE Mission on yet another fun fi lled year of community and celebration. As we look forward to 2015, there is a renewed spirit in the air. We look forward to promoting and attending as many events as possible and maybe even planning a few of our own. Stay tuned!

I want to take an opportunity to thank Jamie Hayes for her contribution to What’s On! Mission over the past year. Jamie started working with What’s On! Mission in November of 2013 as part of our sales team and editor. Jamie was a pleasure to work with and brought a lot of enthusiasm to her role. In 2014, Jamie accepted the position of Executive Director with the Mission Downtown Business Association - a position she has already excelled at - and will be leaving What’s On! Mission. We wish Jamie and her family all the best in their new adventures in 2015. (If there are errors in this article, it is because Jamie has already left!)

We are excited to announce that Cory Cassel Productions will be working with The Stage at the Bellevue Hotel to offer an exciting and improved venue for events and entertainment in Mission’s downtown

core. As the redevelopment of the Bellevue Hotel begins to move forward, we are pleased to have been invited in to work with Brock Rodgers and Ken Brookes to bring the building back to life, and will begin a new era of fun and entertainment in a safe, inclusive environment. Follow us as we bring fun back to the Bellevue - on Facebook at The Stage in Mission and at www.thestageinmission.ca.

Have a safe and happy New Year!

Thinking about a new or used car?If you are thinking about purchasing a used car, you know how confusing it can be. There are so many things to consider that it can be a daunting experience.

many things to look for when purchasing a used car but one important factor is

are a few general pointers on how to physically check out a used car before you buy it.

1. Ask for history. Many dealers provide a history for the vehicle they are selling.

2. Get a feel for how it drives. Listen for any noises (with radio off) and any sounds when turning as well.

3. Look at how the seams line up front and rear. This is a great way to see if it has been in any fender benders.

4. Open the oil cap - should be clean and have an oily smell.

5. Buy only from a reputable dealer who will help you after the sale with any issue. When you do this you also have the opportunity to buy an extended warranty.

Fraser Valley Economic Summit: A Mission Perspective

Keeping in touch with the business of MissionKeeping in touch with the business of Mission, BC, Canada

In his address to open the Fraser Valley Economic Summit, held on September 9th, motivational speaker Alvin Law hit quite a few nails on their heads. “My best advice? Live in the moment and concentrate on what you are going to do next. Never dwell in the past, as in ‘We’ve always done it this way’. The past won’t get you where you want to go.” The Fraser Valley is no longer a sleepy by-water on the fringes of Vancouver. It is already an economic powerhouse, and the future of that powerhouse is very bright.

From a Mission perspective, two important takeaways from the Summit are concepts where we already

municipalities to collaborate rather than compete. As

to explain how Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Mission work together to attract investment under the banner of “Invest North Fraser.” Along with my colleagues, we told our audience that the initiative is working, although not without its challenges. For example, our resources and the opportunities are not always equal among the three communities, so maintaining a regional perspective

The second important message for Mission came from UFV president Dr. Mark Evered. “Creative talent is the only sustainable development,” he said. “The unlimited economic resource is brain power.” The tie-in to Mission’s programs to attract the high technology sector and our technical centre of excellence was unmistakable. Human creative talent combined with the development of intellectual property is an immense economic driver worth $624 billion in 2011, and growing at an estimated rate of 8.8% annually. According to Dr. Evered, the world market for media and entertainment technology will surpass $1.9 trillion by 2015. “In the 1950’s, only 10% of the economy was based on the creative sector,” Dr Evered told the meeting.

“That has risen to over 30% and is growing. Factories are yesterday’s engines for growth. Today’s are creative and knowledge-based hubs.” Referring to American economist and social scientist Richard Florida, Dr. Evered talked about the newly emerging Creative Class. According to Florida, the Creative Class is a key driving force for economic development in the post industrial cities in the United States. Of the 330 metropolitan areas in the US, less than 10% have positive scores on what Florida calls “the brain drain factor.” Less than 10% attract college educated people. The other 90% watch their brightest and best leave to work somewhere else. And what do the 10% have that the rest do not? “The three T’s,” says Dr. Evered.

that in itself is not enough. The second “T” is Talent, and you must be able to attract the talent. And the third “T” is Tolerance – the ability to keep an open mind to the world.”

All in all, the Fraser Valley Economic Summit was an interesting and enlightening day. And with Mission working hard to incorporate the three “T’s” into its economic development plans, the future looks good indeed.

Fraser Valley Stage Production Society has been performing for a number of decades. This performance includes some of FVS veterans and a new generation of voices. The cast of 27 come from all parts of the Greater Vancouver Area and Fraser Valley, including some from Mission.

Fraser Valley Stage has deeply rooted connections within the community. Rehearsal venues include schools and churches and ticket sales are within places of business. This performance has expanded those connections into the Mission Community by involving a local dance studio for choreographers. The show’s entire run is at the Clarke Theatre.

The cast will take you from center stage to backstage and at times a little ‘off stage’ as they bring to life some

of the most well-known songs of “Broadway.” instead of the familiar lyrics the words are what make the show. “So come with us on an omnibus to a theater-goers soiree,” where the show includes ‘sexy staging’ on a ‘bare stage.’

So if you are looking for that perfect Valentine’s Day gift or have always wanted to see the “show,” here is your chance to!

Forbidden Broadway runs February 25 to February 28, 2015 with nightly shows at 7:30pm and a 2:30 Matinee on Saturday. All shows will be held at the Clarke Theatre, Heritage Park Centre, 33700 Prentis Ave. Tickets can be purchased at the Mission Leisure Centre, at Prospera, Credit Union ,by calling 604 854 5463 or 778 801 5573, or online at www.fraservalleystage.com. Ticket prices: $25 Adult, $22 Senior/Youth, $15 child

Can Dance studio has been teaching dance in the Fraser

Valley for the past 26 years. Director Debbie Calicetto not

only loves to bring the passion of dance to children who

come to the studio but also work with the local schools and

theatre companies to bring the performing arts alive in the

community.

The up and coming FVS production ‘Forbidden Broadway’ is

another amazing production that Debbie and Sabra Lind,

Washing dishes and keenly watching all that was happening in the kitchen, he knew this was what he was meant to do. Thirty-eight years later after leading teams in some of the best restaurants and golf course kitchens in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, he and his wife Laurel have now opened their second restaurant in Mission, Martin’s Downtown.

Kerry’s philosophy of using fresh, local, highest quality ingredients is what you will discover and savour at Martin’s Downtown. Each menu item begins with a vision of the

until perfected. With classical cooking techniques being the focus, each menu item has been carefully created to delight your palate. We begin with real food, fresh and wholesome to create a meal to remember. Our talented kitchen team has the highest respect for the quality of the

fresh ingredients they carefully create with, spending many hours each day preparing for lunch and dinner.

Martin’s Downtown is in one of Mission historic buildings that has undergone many changes over the years. Built in 1929 it was the original Mission Town Hall and was used as such until 1974 when it was renovated and has since housed many good restaurants. Our atmosphere is stylish, sophisticated, warm and welcoming, softly lit, the

martini shaker in the background.

We and our staff invite you to be our guest for… Classic Cuisine at Martin’s Downtown or Valley Casual at The Blackberry Kitchen in Fraser River Heritage Park.

Chef Kerry Martin has come full circle, or at least across the street. While still in high school, his career began at The Pepper Tree Restaurant, now LA Fusion.

HOW TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOMEEven though we are well into winter, it is never too late to properly winterize your home. The following steps will help you keep the heat in your home, and money in your pocket. Most of the procedures are inexpensive and

more than pay for themselves in future savings.

Check your HeatingThe easiest way to do this is hire a heating specialist, but if you are on a budget here is how to do it yourself.

month but only change it if there is noticeable build up.

any kinks or poorly crimped ends, replace that section.

sided tape rather than duct tape because metal tape lasts longer.

reach.

- You can also vacuum out the blower section of your furnace; just make sure it is unplugged before attempting this.

Seal in those leaks

Up to 40% of a house’s heat can be lost due to air leakage. This loss can be reduced by doing the following:

doors, and windows.

installation and replace where needed.

- Use heat-sealed coverings to insulate single pane windows and doors.

windows, this means the seal is defective and needs to be replaced.

- Take a look in your attic and make sure that the insulation is still snugly secured between your rafters. Replace if there is any visible damage or poor installation.

Keep the cold out

- Use caulking and/or foam gaskets to seal all exterior light

your siding or foundation.

- Pro-tip: Hold a piece of incense and walk with it 2” away from your baseboards. The end will glow brighter and the smoke will noticeably drift away from any droughts. Caulk where any leaks are found.

Protect your PlumbingFrozen pipes can rupture and cause major damage to your home. Prevent this by:

- Using electric pipe covers, foam sleeves, or insulating pipe-wrap in any area where pipes will be exposed to freezing temperatures.

- Cover exterior taps with Styrofoam covers and unhook any garden hoses.

Miscellaneous tips

- Buy a programmable thermostat to turn off your furnace at night or when you are away from the house.

- Keep your gutters clean of debris to prevent ice build-up.

- Clean your chimney.

- Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans so they force warm air downwards and better circulate the air in your home.

(incense), do not rely on the ‘test’ button.

The Six C’s of Selling:1. Curb Appeal – how does your property look from the curb? If potential buyers love the

looks of the house from the curb, they become excited to see it and they will call me for an appointment.

2. Clutter – eliminate it everywhere: closets, garages, attic, each room, yard, etc. If buyers see it,

3. Clean – everywhere and everything! People value cleanliness, in what they see, smell, and touch.

4. Character and charm – what makes your property special. It’s the little touches of decorating

feeling. The four hundred and eleven piece toy train collection probably won’t do it.

5. Critique your home objectively – how does it compare to others in the area? What are your

analysis.

6. Cost vs. Value – spend money in the right places and on the right items to get your home “market ready.” The best to accomplish this is to contact me for a free, no obligation pre-listing consultation.

My name is Rita Racine. 5 years ago I had an operation to help shrink a fibroid which was the size of a grapefruit. The operation did shrink it about 2 inches over a 3 year period but I still felt it growing and all the symptoms were coming back. I heard about the Photon Genius light therapy from Dolf at FUEL in Mission. I took 6 treatments and I no longer feel the fibroid and I have more energy and better circulation. I also drink Dolphin Water and do a daily detox. Thanks to Dolf and Zorka for all your help and support.

My name is Madison and I am 7 and this is my story. When I was 4 years old I woke up one morning and I was covered in huge hives from head to toe. The doctors said I had “Idiopathic Urticaria” which means hives for no known reason. I was placed on 3 different medications and was told I would probably grow out of it. One night I woke up with my tongue and throat feeling funny so I was rushed to Emergency and was diagnosed with “Angiodema” which causes my fingers, eyelids and bottoms of my feet to swell. Every time I got excited, sad, worried or sick I would swell-

basically, every birthday, Christmas or special occasion. The doctors suggested using adult strength Benedryl along with my other meds to help the swelling (that’s a lot of medicine for my little body). My dad happened to walk into FUEL- Mission Store, and told Dolf about me. Dolf suggested his “Dolphin” Alkaline water. We drank the water as a family and I started to notice that I wasn’t breaking out as much and eventually I didn’t need any meds. For 6 months I was symptom free until we went camping and it started again. The only thing different was that we didn’t have the Dolphin Water. We started drinking the water again and 4 days later I stopped swelling. THANK YOU DOLPH for helping me to be a HEALTHY little girl.

Why Choose a “Learning Through Play”Preschool Program?

Choosing to enroll your preschooler in a program that supports learning throughplay is the most developmentally appropriate setting for enhancing their overall growth

and development, at a time when it’s happening fast! When preschoolers are givenopportunities to learn in natural play settings, they learn best through discovery,

exploration, practice and encouragement.

What about academics?A learning through play program allows children to learn concepts, discover and

experience their world and build skills in a way that supports their natural ability tolearn. It also builds imagination, creativity, and a LOVE for learning!

A learning through play program is the best way to prepare your child for their bigschool career! Before Kindergarten, preschoolers need opportunities to:

• Develop social skills• Learn to manage emotions and regulate behavior

• Develop self-help skills • Practice problem solving

• Understand routines and follow directions• Practice communication

• Play cooperatively and respect others• Recognize their name in written form

• Build relationships and make peer connections

MissionUkulele CircleAfter attending a ukulele circle in Victoria, Richard Lepinsky started the Mission Ukulele Circle in Nov 2013, shortly after moving to Mission. Over the last year, the group has grown in numbers with a current membership of around twenty. The group welcomes all levels of ability, including those who are just starting to play the ukulele. The goal is to have a fun, educational music group open to all.

The ukulele is an easy instrument to become musical with, in a short time. So many members are new ukulele players just starting to play. The group meets Wednesday afternoons from 1:30to 3:30 at the St. Andrews Place commonroom located at at 7365 Cedar St. This islocated at the end of 3rd Avenue.

What better way to start off 2015 than to make a resolution to get more art into your life. Did you know that a weekly helping or two of arts and culture leads to good health, good satisfaction with life, low anxiety and depression scores (Nord-Trøndelag Health Study)?

Most of us don’t need a study to tell us that involvement in creative pursuits make us feel good on many levels. When it comes to activities that sharpen both our mind and body dance cannot be beat. Exercising our creativity through participating in music, visual, theatre or literary arts; moving our bodies through yoga or tai chi; appreciating beauty and reducing stress by walking in nature; socializing with friends and family around cultural pursuits; all add a great deal to our quality of life and our overall health.

Mission has many opportunities to engage in cultural activities from a visit to the library or art gallery to a night at the theatre, a dinner out or trip to the Westminster Abbey. Often times we don’t have to go much further than our own neighbourhood to see art breaking out - from yarn bombing to murals to sculpture. And we have many activities that don’t cost a thing, from free festivals and community events to a walk on one of our many trails or a visit to our lovely harbour to watch the river.

To get you started thinking about Mission arts and culture,

pieces of local public art. If you can name the location of each piece you are eligible to enter our draw. Just go to our website at www.missionculturalresources.ca for more details and entry form. Take art to heart in 2015!

The Mission Youth House (M.Y. House) is an initiative of the Mission Youth Homelessness Committee and many service providers in Mission, is getting ready to open its doors and help youth in our community.

Recent estimates indicate that there are over 25 homeless youth in Mission at any given time. In addition, there are many other youths in vulnerable situations that need help

The MYHC surveyed local homeless youth to understand their top needs:

• A place to get cleaned up and have a shower• Access to laundry• Healthy warm meals

• Non-judgemental adults to talk to

M.Y. House will work to address these needs.Caring, professional adults will now be easily accessible by youth in need to provide practical assistance and advice in addition to emotional support. These are the essentials to help transition vulnerable youth to health, stability and safety.

Riot of Reading breaksout in Mission.

Mission is ready to celebrate Family Literacy Day with the thirteenth annual Riot of Reading Solutions Saturday, January 31st from 11am - 3pm at Ecole Mission Central, 7466 Welton St.

Family Literacy Day reminds us of the joys of taking time to read together. Reading encourages brain development, increases a child’s vocabulary and awareness of the world. And besides – it is fun. Riotously fun! The Riot of Reading Solutions will celebrate this love of reading with free entertainment including, fabulous stories, face-painting, balloon animals and a rousing magic show. Throughout the day there will be demonstrations of dance, music and drumming. There will also be wandering visits from some favourite storybook characters such as Clifford the Big Red Dog and Geronimo Stilton, the Detective Mouse. Make sure to stay for free pizza and cake!

Meet and connect with many of the people in Mission who work with families

our community. Mission Literacy in Motion, Mission Community Services, the Early Childhood Development Committee, the Mission Library, and many more organizations will have information tables at the fair. Make sure to mark this date on your calendar. It’s going to be a Riot!
