1. 1st is First – taking back ownership and control of the High Street (1st Avenue), relocating truck traffic and transforming 1st Avenue into a pedestrian-oriented Retail High Street that gracefully accommodates vehicles, deliveries, pedestrians and cyclists;

2. Welton Street Pedestrian Spine - enhancing the public open space network connecting existing and future key destinations to improve pedestrian comfort, convenience and safety in the downtown;

3. Bring Cultural, Education and Civic Uses Downtown - attracting a combination of civic, arts, and educational uses to the downtown to support a greater amount and diversity of people and activities;

4. Improve the Economics of Downtown Development - introducing development regulations and incentives that improve the overall viability of downtown development and business opportunities;

5. Downtown Living - increasing the number and diversity of people living in and adjacent to the downtown;

6. A Welcoming and Family-Friendly Downtown - bringing a greater amount and diversity of people and activities to the Downtown and minimizing negative behaviour and activities;

8. Safety and Security - improving actual and perceived safety and security in the downtown.

10. Downtown Gateways - emphasizing the sense of arrival in the Downtown through distinctive private development and public realm improvements.

Downtown Redevelopment Enters Implementation Phase

After nearly a year of intensive planning and community involvement, the fi nal report on the Mission City Downtown Action Plan was issued in late June, 2013. Its sixty-two pages cover a multitude of both challenges and solutions, many of them driven by local participation in public and stakeholder workshops. In fact, a surprisingly large number of Mission residents showed their support for the process, and their opinions were very much taken into account.

Planning strategies for Mission started with the Five Fundamentals of a successful downtown: a multi-modal transportation system; a mix of high density land uses and activity nodes; a high quality public realm, parks and open spaces; addressing social needs and community issues and; creating economic conditions for successful development.

The report goes on to recommend ten major changes to the status quo – what it calls “10 Big Moves”, to be implemented over the coming years. These include taking back ownership and control of 1st Avenue, relocating truck traffi c and transforming 1st Avenue into a pedestrian-oriented Retail High Street. The “10 Big Moves” also include enhancing the public open space networks connecting existing and future key destinations to improve pedestrian comfort, convenience and safety, as well as creating a public park in the Downtown that provides green amenity space for residents and visitors. Also included are incentives to encourage private development of residential and commercial buildings that improve the overall viability of Downtown.

Cherries JubileeThis recipe is generally credited to Auguste Escoffi er, who prepared the dish for one of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee celebrations, though it is unclear whether it was for the Golden Jubilee of 1887 or the Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

Ingredients1 x 14oz can of cherries in syrup1/4 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup light brown sugar Pinch of salt Juice from 1/2 lemon 1 TBSP cornstarch 3oz cherry brandy or brandy4 scoops vanilla ice-cream

DirectionsMelt butter in a large fry pan, add sugar until dissolved. Add cherries, salt, lemon juice. Use cornstarch dissolved in cold water if needed to thicken sauce .Carefully add cherry brandy, bring to a boil. Carefully ignite brandy with a long wooden match or a lighter with a long barrel. Flame will burnout in approximately 15-20 seconds. Ladle cherry sauce around ice-cream in a serving plate or bowl.

Recipes from the Blackberry KitchenBananas FosterThe dish was created in 1951 by Paul Blange at Brennan’s Restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was named for Richard Foster; a friend of Owen Brennan’s who was at the time New Orleans’ Crime Commission Chairman. It is still served at a number of fi ne restaurants in New Orleans as well as in many restaurants around the world.

Ingredients4 fresh bananas, peeled and cut in quarters lengthwise1/4 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup dark brown sugar sprinkle of cinnamon 3oz dark rum2oz banana liquor 4 scoops vanilla ice cream

Directions1, Pre-scoop ice cream and keep in freezer until needed.2, Melt butter in a large fry pan, add sugar and cinnamon.

Heat until bubbling and sugar is dissolved. 3, Add sliced bananas to the pan and cook until lightly

browned. 4, Add rum and banana liquor, bring to a boil. Carefully

5, Present around pre-scooped ice-cream balls.

Mission will host the 2014 BC Winter Games February 20 – 23 , the biggest event ever to come to our community! It’s becoming increasingly apparent that a greater number of women are taking the reins when it comes to home purchases. Downtown Redevelopment Enters Implementation Phase


After nearly a year of intensive planning and community involvement, the final report on the Mission City Downtown Action Plan was issued in late June, 2013. Its sixty-two pages cover a multitude of both challenges and solutions, many of them driven by local participation in public and stakeholder workshops. In fact, a surprisingly large number of Mission residents showed their support for the process, and their opinions were very much taken into account. Planning strategies for Mission started with the Five Fundamentals of a successful downtown: a multi-modal transportation system; a mix of high density land uses and activity nodes; a high quality public realm, parks and open spaces; addressing social needs and community issues and; creating economic conditions for successful development.

The report goes on to recommend ten major changes to the status quo - what it calls “10 Big Moves” - to be implemented over the coming years. These include taking back ownership and control of 1st Avenue and relocating truck traffic and transforming 1st Avenue into a pedestrian-oriented Retail High Street. The “10 Big Moves” also include enhancing the public open space networks connecting existing and future key destinations to improve pedestrian comfort, convenience and safety, as well as creating a public park in the Downtown that provides green amenity space for residents and visitors. Also included are incentives to encourage private development of residential and commercial buildings that improve the overall viability of Downtown.

HOW TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOMEEven though we are well into winter, it is never too late to properly winterize your home. The following steps will help you keep the heat in your home, and money in your pocket. Most of the procedures are inexpensive and easy to perform. With the cost of energy on the rise, these simple fixes will more than pay for themselves in future savings.

Check your HeatingThe easiest way to do this is hire a heating specialist, but if you are on a budget here is how to do it yourself.

- First and foremost, check your filter. Inspect it every month but only change it if there is noticeable build up.

- Head to the attic and check out your ducting. If there are any kinks or poorly crimped ends, replace that section. If there are holes in the ducting, patch them with metal-sided tape rather than duct tape because metal tape lasts longer.

- Vacuum out your floor register vents as far as you can reach.

- You can also vacuum out the blower section of your furnace; just make sure it is unplugged before attempting this.

Seal in those leaks

Up to 40% of a house’s heat can be lost due to air leakage. This loss can be reduced by doing the following:

- Use caulking or sprayfoam to seal around fireplaces, doors, and windows.

- Inspect weather stripping around doors for wear or poor installation and replace where needed.

- Use heat-sealed coverings to insulate single pane windows and doors.

- If you have condensation between the panes of your windows, this means the seal is defective and needs to be replaced.

- Take a look in your attic and make sure that the insulation is still snugly secured between your rafters. Replace if there is any visible damage or poor installation.

Keep the cold out

- Use caulking and/or foam gaskets to seal all exterior light fixtures, outlets, vents, or any other space that may be in your siding or foundation.

- Pro-tip: Hold a piece of incense and walk with it 2” away from your baseboards. The end will glow brighter and the smoke will noticeably drift away from any droughts. Caulk where any leaks are found.

Protect your PlumbingFrozen pipes can rupture and cause major damage to your home. Prevent this by:

- Using electric pipe covers, foam sleeves, or insulating pipe-wrap in any area where pipes will be exposed to freezing temperatures.

- Cover exterior taps with Styrofoam covers and unhook any garden hoses.

Miscellaneous tips

- Buy a programmable thermostat to turn off your furnace at night or when you are away from the house.

- Keep your gutters clean of debris to prevent ice build-up.

- Clean your chimney.

- Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans so they force warm air downwards and better circulate the air in your home.

- Inspect your smoke detectors with actual smoke (incense), do not rely on the ‘test’ button.

- Insulate your hot-water tank by using a heat reflective wrap.

Cherries JubileeThis recipe is generally credited to Auguste Escoffi er, who prepared the dish for one of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee celebrations, though it is unclear whether it was for the Golden Jubilee of 1887 or the Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

Ingredients1 x 14oz can of cherries in syrup1/4 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup light brown sugar Pinch of salt Juice from 1/2 lemon 1 TBSP cornstarch 3oz cherry brandy or brandy4 scoops vanilla ice-cream

DirectionsMelt butter in a large fry pan, add sugar until dissolved. Add cherries, salt, lemon juice. Use cornstarch dissolved in cold water if needed to thicken sauce .Carefully add cherry brandy, bring to a boil. Carefully ignite brandy with a long wooden match or a lighter with a long barrel. Flame will burnout in approximately 15-20 seconds. Ladle cherry sauce around ice-cream in a serving plate or bowl.

Recipes from the Blackberry KitchenBananas FosterThe dish was created in 1951 by Paul Blange at Brennan’s Restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was named for Richard Foster; a friend of Owen Brennan’s who was at the time New Orleans’ Crime Commission Chairman. It is still served at a number of fi ne restaurants in New Orleans as well as in many restaurants around the world.

Ingredients4 fresh bananas, peeled and cut in quarters lengthwise1/4 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup dark brown sugar sprinkle of cinnamon 3oz dark rum2oz banana liquor 4 scoops vanilla ice cream

Directions1, Pre-scoop ice cream and keep in freezer until needed.2, Melt butter in a large fry pan, add sugar and cinnamon.

Heat until bubbling and sugar is dissolved. 3, Add sliced bananas to the pan and cook until lightly

browned. 4, Add rum and banana liquor, bring to a boil. Carefully

Lions Club since 1980, including approximately 7000 residents from Hatzic Prairie to Hemlock Valley.

The Lions meet the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm at the Deroche Community Hall, and they welcome new members. Last year the Lions contributed over $37,000

When I was 4 years old I woke up one morning and I was covered in huge hives from head to toe. The doctors said I had “Idiopathic Urticaria” which means hives for no known reason. I was placed on 3 different medications and was told I would probably grow out of it. One night I woke up with my tongue and throat feeling funny so I was rushed to Emergency and was diagnosed with “Angiodema” which causes my fingers, eyelids and bottoms of my feet to swell. Go outside – If you start to feel blah in the winter months going outside will help you feel better. I know it’s cold & rainy all the time here in Mission, put on your rain gear & go for a walk. Even if you only get outside for 10 minutes the fresh air will make a world of difference. Mission has lots of hiking trails including the trails at Heritage Park & the Hayward Lake Railway trail.

Have fun – Laughter is the best medicine! Figure out what brings you joy & then do it. I have a few friends who send me funny texts & it really makes my day. 2 other sure fire ways to make me smile: watching Ellen or listening to Mackelmore (what, what). What makes you smile?

Eat more fruits & vegetables – We all need to eat healthier but often think we need to go on a cleanse or drastically change our eating habits. Instead of going hard on a healthy eating regimen that will last 1 week try eating more fruits & vegetables every day. If you’re having pizza peel a few carrots & eat them with your meal, take fruit in your lunch to work, slice vegetables & leave them on the counter so when you’re hungry you eat some veggies before you dive into the snack cupboard.

Yoga – If you haven’t tried yoga yet what are you waiting for? From stress reduction to weight loss yoga is good for you. If you’ve done yoga before & need to get back on your mat ask yourself this question “what would motivate me to show up to a class?”

Meditation – All the scientific research is pointing towards one thing: meditation is extremely good for you. If you want to get healthy by reducing stress, anxiety, depression or negativity meditation is a fantastic place to start.
