PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Cory
Here we Grow Again!I am very pleased to announce that Cory Cassel Productions has teamed up with Bronwen Sutherland to launch What’s On! Abbotsford this coming September 2015! We are so excited to welcome Bronwen to the What’s On! family and look forward to publishing Abbotsford’s newest Community Events, Entertainment, And Leisure publication - in print and online. Our fi rst issue will hit stands in Abbotsford during the fi rst week of September. Tell your friends on the other side of the river - we are coming! To contact us regarding submissions or advertising in What’s On! Abbotsford, please email whatsonabbotsford@ gmail.com and visit us at www.whatsonabbotsford.ca.
You may notice that the list of events happening at The Stage at The Bellevue Hotel in downtown Mission is missing from this issue. After a very successful winter and spring chalk full of exciting events at The Stage, we are going to be taking a bit of a break over the summer while we work to solidify our management team and processes and work to bring a whole
new calendar of unique and exciting events beginning in the fall. Follow us on Facebook at Cory Cassel Productions and visit our website at www.thestageinmission.ca to stay in the loop! Email [email protected] to book the entire bar for your next event - private/corporate parties, fundraisers, Christmas Parties, and more - Catering Available.

VANCOUVER’S ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MUSICALBy Dean Regan
IN A BLUE MOONJanuary 25, 2016
FINDING HOME IN UNEXPECTED PLACESBy Lucia Frangione
4000 MILESMarch 12, 2016
AN UPLIFTING STORY OF GROWING UP AND GROWING OLDBy Amy Herzog
Vancouver, 1957. Five teens come of age while DJ Red Robinson plays the biggest hits of the time—from the raucous “Great Balls of Fire” and “Jailhouse Rock” to ballads like “Diana” and “Crying.” This infectious musical captures the excitement and innocence of the city’s burgeoning rock ‘n’ roll scene.
A visually beautiful tale about creating a new life in a new landscape. When Ava and her daughter, Frankie, move to an inherited cottage near Kamloops, they discover that Ava’s late husband’s brother is already living there. What starts as a tense relationship develops in unexpected ways as Frankie finds a role model in her uncle and Ava grows attached to the companionship of this other man. Through memories and photographs, a tender love story unfolds between the three as they begin to thread together a new understanding of family.
A touching, vividly rendered story about a sprightly 91-year-old New Yorker and her 21-year-old grandson. Leo, who has just cycled across the country, shows up unannounced on Vera’s doorstep with a bike, no money, and nowhere to go. In time, these unlikely roommates stop squabbling and, with humour and compassion, help each other navigate their changing worlds.

While providing a roof over someone’s head is critical to helping someone off the street, there are many com-munity supports also typically needed to help a person adjust such as medication management, mental health service provision and substance use counselling. Anoth-er equally important area not often addressed is how a community perceives those who are struggling to rebuild their lives. Mission is striving to replace judgement with an educated and informed community response.
Kerry and Laurel Martin, owners of The Blackberry Kitch-en located in Fraser River Heritage Park and Martin’s Downtown on First Avenue have jumped in to help, “Af-ter a lot of thinking about how our restaurants could help out, we decided we would offer a portion of the sale from every Tuesday’s lunch feature at The Black-berry Kitchen to support youth prevention while Martin’s Downtown has created a new soup recipe which will be called Stone Soup and be good for all! This soup will be vegan and gluten-free and a portion of each purchase going toward the cost of training volunteers or other
stone soup initiatives” explained Laurel Martin.
Kirsten Hargreaves, Mission’s Manager of Social Devel-opment, couldn’t be happier “This is an innovative ex-ample of local business and the social sector coming to-gether, as socially responsible consumerism grows, this is a way hungry patrons can fill their hunger while giving back to community”. Paul Horn, consultant and com-munity builder with the project says “Laurel and Kerry exemplify the idea behind this initiative. If we want a better community for all, we all need to pitch in.”
Stone Soup Shining a light on how local business can take a leadership role in addressing homelessness.
So order a bowl of stone soup and put your
money where your mouth is!

Hello, my name is Trevor. My story starts with a history of 25 years driving heavy duty trucks and the long hours that go with it. I found myself 50 lbs over weight, on blood pressure medication for 2 years, sleep apnea for 5 years and acid reflux for 4 years. Now the amazing part of the story. My wife and I heard about Dolphin Water from a cousin who started
drinking the Dolphin Water about 3 months ago. I have gone from 250 lbs to 218 lbs (32 lbs loss), my blood pressure is completely normal, acid reflux was completely gone within 6 weeks and no more medication.
Thank you Dolf for caring enough to share your wonderful Dolphin water.

KEEPING IT CANADIAN: ACE TO BECOME RONA INDEPENDENT DEALER
In the PressBig news everyone! On June 2nd we agreed to purchase the assets of the corporately owned RONA Home Centre here in Mission and transition our retail operations from ACE to RONA while the contractor division of FVBS remains unchanged. Following the closure of the corporate RONA on June 30th, Fraser Valley Building Supplies’ ACE retail operations has rebranded from Ace Hardware to a 100%
What this Means for Us and Our CustomersOn the retail side, this exciting new venture for us will bring together the national retailing strengths of RONA with our friendly, knowledgeable in store staff. Though our logo and colour scheme has changed, you can expect an improved product selection combined with the service that you know and trust.
We would like to also inform our contract customers that our contractor sales division will remain unchanged and will continue to operate as Fraser Valley Building Supplies (FVBS)
Our VisionWhen Ernie Nick, along with sons David and Brad, opened Fraser Valley Building Supplies in 1992, they did so with a vision of providing quality products and unmatched customer service to the homeowners, contractors, and builders of Mission. We plan to continue this legacy and, using RONA’s vast product selection and national buying power, provide a greater home improvement shopping experience for the Mission community and surrounding areas.
FVBS and the CommunityFVBS has proudly supported numerous community groups, organizations and charities over the years and that will not change as we move our retail operation from ACE to RONA. We look forward to our continued involvement with events and activities in our hometown as a locally owned and operated business
Have any questions or concerns regarding out new change? We would love to talk with you down at the store!

CAN DANCECAN DANCE
Registration is now underway!
Ages 3 and Up
26 years of dance education in Mission
Tosh Sutherland began dancing at a young age. When his classes at Can Dance Studio of
Mission, B.C. took him from a recreational dancer into the world of competitive tap he knew he
had found his niche. Taking as many classes as he could from some of the greats such as Bonnie
Jean Anderson, Danny Neilson, Dianne Walker, Derrick Grant and Lisa La Touche just to name a
few. He was soon accepted and trained with Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts and went on to the
world tap Dance Championships receiving numerous world medals including a bronze for the
Male solo category.
Tosh’s training led him to several professional opportunities. Traveling around the world with
Princess cruise lines gave him an opportunity to train in many forms of dance as well as keep his
tap training every chance he got. Working with the Vancouver Tap society, the Troy McLaughlin Tap Collective, (most
recently with West Side Story at the Vancouver Playhouse), Shawn Byfield Productions, Toronto Rhythm Initiative, and
Toronto’s Young People’s Theatre to name a few, expanded his professional Tap career.
In 2011 Tosh Sutherland landed the role of Tip in the production “I Think I Can” where he portrayed a character with
cerebral palsy who overcomes adversity. Playing a tap dancer with a disability really opened his eyes to the possibilities
that anyone and everyone can dance.
More recently after travelling all over the Pacific and Europe Tosh ended up back in his hometown here in Canada where
he has been adjudicating for Dance competitions and just finished choreographing a dance piece for the “ The Scarlet
Queen on Mercy” production. As well as his busy professional dance career Tosh also enjoys bringing his love of tap to
students across the Vancouver area. Tosh combines excellent and rigorous technique in his classes with a sense of fun. He
teaches the importance of the music and introduces the history of dance to his students. He has always been able to
engage his students even those just starting out their dance training to those wishing to pursue a career in Tap with his
infectious love of performance.
Can Dance Studio welcomes Tosh Sutherland to its professional coaching team.
We welcome Tosh back to Can Dance Studio where this fall he will be teaching students of all ages and abilities. Tosh’s classes fill up fast. If you are
interested in training with Tosh or any of their professional staff, each specializing in their field of dance, call Can Dance today 604 820 0122 or register
online at candancestudio.com.

Mission Association of Community LivingWhat is Community Inclusion and why does it matter? If you were born in British Columbia before 1980, you may not have school memories of learning alongside kids with developmental disabilities. In the past, ‘those kids’ were often labeled and placed in institutions and denied the rights that most of us take for granted. The community living movement was formed by parents to advocate for family members who have developmental disabilities to be fully included in all elements of community life. Here in B.C. the community living movement resulted in the closure of institutions. When folks moved into communities, there were opportunities for community members to meet, form friendships, and learn from those with labels. Our lives are richer for the connections we have. We may understand resilience in a new way and carry a deep appreciation for the beauty of diversity.
While the deinstitutionalization of people resulted in profound change and social improvement for individuals with disabilities, the movement still has work to do on the social justice front. From our perspective, community inclusion is not a social justice issue for those who have disabilities; it is a social justice issue for those who do not. Inclusive communities are better communities for all of us. Many doors have yet to be opened to ensure that people who have been marginalized may fully realize the experience of living in welcoming communities. MACL strives to further inclusion by supporting individuals and children with developmental disabilities to have inclusive preschool experiences, attend neighbourhood schools, participate in inclusive recreation and leisure activities, live in the neighbourhoods that they choose, work at real jobs for real pay, and access community services.
There are many ways you can join the community inclusion movement! Become a member of MACL, donate to our work, become a champion employer, get to know someone with a developmental disability, and attend our 15th annual Illuminaria festival to celebrate inclusion! In the words of Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”
PREPARE! STAY SAFE! SURVIVE!
Backyard Pool Safety
Backyard pools can provide many hours of summer fun, but they can also be dangerous. Owning a backyard pool or hot tub comes with the responsibility of ensuring its safe use. Most often, children who drown do so in a pool when a caregiver is not paying attention, if only for a second. These drownings primarily involve young children who gain access to a pool without a self-closing and self-latching gate.
Tips:
There are simple steps that families can follow to keep their backyard pools safe.
• Build a fence that has a self-closing and self-latching gate; keep the gate closed with restricted access at all times. Refer to your municipal bylaws for fencing requirements.
• Establish pool rules. These can include: swim with a buddy, children must have an adult with them at all times, and no glass containers around the pool.
• Few backyard pools are safe for diving - swimmers should always enter
• Be prepared take a First Aid course• Have readily accessible reaching or throwing assists, a working phone
• Have an Action Plan including adult supervision, an emergency signal, safety equipment and emergency procedures.
• Keep the deck clear of toys and debris.• Do not use alcohol or drugs in or around the pool.• Small on-ground portable or kiddie pools should be emptied when not in
use. Above-ground pools should have the ladder or steps removed when not in use.
• Hot tubs should not exceed 104° F or 40° C and are not recommended for pregnant women, toddlers or infants.
Active adult supervision is of the utmost importance- never leave your child unattended, not even for a second.
• Lifejackets or PFDs should be worn by weak or non-swimmers, but they are not substitutes for supervisionby an adult with good swimming skills, or a lifeguard.
• Enroll your children in Red Cross swimming lessons.• Adults who are weak swimmers should also take lessons,
• Take your children with you if you have to leave the poolfor any reason

WRITTEN BY LORRAINE TRULSENWHERE IS “PLAY” TODAY?
Why is it that the pressure and expectations of success are placed on children at such a young age in today’s world? All parents want the best for their children, but it seems that the process of helping them achieve has shifted over the years. Children are kept “so busy” these days that they don’t get to have the joy of experiencing “play” like children have in the past.Play can be described as a self-chosen activity that involves creativity. It is really about the process, not the end product. The difference between play and work is that play is very open-ended but work has an expected outcome.
“Back in the day” children were able to venture out into their neighbourhoods and experience their surroundings with their friends. Their “gross motor play” was climbing trees and swinging from the branches, or riding their bikes over to their friends’ house.
yet, seeing who could collect the most bugs and worms. Their “cognitive learning” was taking place in simple, fun activities like playing hopscotch and having to count, or playing four-square or building a snow fort.
The life skills gained while just “playing” was enormous. Children gained social skills, like how to interact with others, how to take turns, how to communicate, and how to compromise. Children were being active, exploring, engaging in new experiences and making friends! They were constantly challenging themselves, both physically and mentally, repeating activities and trying out ideas, all in the name of “PLAY.”
Today parents are challenged in a very different way than parents from years past. Before parents could just open the door, tell their children to go play, and tell them to be home for dinner. Now, parents need to be a part of their children’s play because of the society we have created. Play is such an
integral part of childhood and every child deserves to experience it as much as possible. The bright side for parents is that providing opportunities for play

What’s in a name? Well, in this case – a description. ‘Third Monday Magic’ is a local monthly magic shows that is held…on the third Monday of every month! This gem of a show is a little known Mission secret, and we feel it’s time to let everyone know what they have been missing!
The Fraser Valley Magic Circle is the group behind the show, and when they formed their club (Ring #387 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians) 3 years ago, co-founder Mike Norden, aka Norden the Magician, knew that they would need a venue for a local show.
Norden attended a Christmas Panto at the Opening Nite Theatre on Railway Ave and knew he found the spot. “It’s a quaint little 50 seat theatre with a green room, a great size stage and an intimate and relaxed ambiance” Norden recalls. “And it was dark on Mondays only”.
So began the show called Third Monday Magic. The talent is pulled from the roster of the club’s 35 members, plus exciting guest stars from around BC and afar. The likes
and so many more have graced this tiny stage in Mission.
“It’s unbelievable. Right here in our town – the top magicians in the world are doing their act for a few dozen people. Crazy.” Norden chuckles. “More people need to know about this venue. For a mere $10 ticket (kids are $5) you can come out and support live entertainment in your own town. It’s a 90 minute magical extravaganza.”
are out of school and can attend, in March, July, August, October (Halloween) and December. For those shows the admission for kids is FREE! In March they had 70 people pack the theatre! “They are the most popular of the editions we produce, but we do other months with comedy magic, mentalism, close up, parlour and other genres of magic so that all audience types are catered too”. Norden explains. “And we are proud to have just completed our 24th edition last month, making this the longest currently running magic show in BC!”
With July and August coming up, that means the next two shows will be for kids and families. July will be a theme on the movie ‘Frozen’ and August will be all about ‘Superheros’. Norden says “It’s provides a great and fun challenge to our members and guest entertainers to come up with new and exciting tricks each month! Please check us out on Facebook at www.FB.com/mondaymagicBC and to purchase advance tickets go to www.FVMC.ca .
Tickets are available at the door at Opening Nite Theatre (33223 N. Railway Ave) or at Abstract Glass in Mission. Or contact Mike Norden at [email protected] .
