SO WHEN last did you do something special on Valentine’s Day? Or are you one of those that think coffee in bed, a heart-themed Valentine’s Card and a bunch of flowers, chocolates or a book will adequately convey how much you care? Luckily we’ve done the thinking for you this year and provided some wonderful options to help you celebrate this day of love with your special someone.

Latimer’s Landing at East London’s harbour is being given a revamp (with lots more to come) and is worth a visit. Although the wooden jetty is still out of bounds, with a R45-million upgrade on the cards, Footprints Restaurant, previously located near the Nahoon Nature Reserve, is very much up and running.

It has designed a special Valentine’s Dinner for Friday, February 14, and as most evenings in East London at this time of year are beautiful, dining at this venue watching the lights dance off the river may well revive the sparkle your loved one’s eyes. Call Footprints on 043 722 0056 or 083 984 6379, 071 807 9718 to book.

If you couple this with an

early evening cruise around the harbour or up the Buffalo River on the likes of the southern Cross operated by John Barrie, or the Ballyhoo operated by Graham Wentworth, then you really will have scored a couple of points in the love stakes. Cruises can be booked by calling John on 082 938 6275 or Graham on 082 804 1660. Minimum rates do apply.

Of course there are those thrill seekers that might prefer a more exciting way of declaring their love – for that there is skydiving – as in ...“I love you so much I’m prepared to jump 10000 feet for you”.

EP Skydivers in Grahamstown offers tandem skydiving, with qualified jumpers. Think 35 seconds of freefalling to remind you and your partner of that feeling of falling in love all over again AND you get to go home with a DVD and photos of your jump. The same company offers static line courses which includes all the ground training and one jump. Demo skydives can be arranged in and around East London. Call James Williamson on 082 441 2055 for more details.

So for a Valentine’s date with a twist, get booking!

ANN BRYANT ART GALLERYMAIN GALLERY

FEBRUARY – 7 MARCH 2014

ANN BRYANT ART GALLERY PERMANENT COLLECTION

The collection has been enlarged by pictures donated and pictures purchased. The policy of the Advisory Board has been to concentrate on the South African Artists and build up a representative collection of their works. So it is that the South African pictures cover a period of a hundred years or more, from Thomas Bowler to such contemporary artists as Maud Sumner, Laurence Scully, George Pemba, and Willie Bester.

For some years the Art Society continued to purchase and present pictures to the Gallery.

Some of these are paintings by Emily Fern, Piet van Heerden and Joan Wright. In fact “Zulu Girl” by Joan Wright was the first picture actually bought for the Gallery, as it was purchased on their

Annual Exhibition in December 1946, on hearing that the Gables” had been left to the City as an Art Gallery. Among the pictures donated by private persons are works by Wiles, Nils Andersen, Sydney Carter and a most interesting drawing by Irma Stern “Transkeian Native”.

There is also an interesting collection of graphic work from etchings by British artists of the earlier decades of this century to work by contemporary South African artists.
