7 helpful tips for organizing your garage

Keep items off the fl oor and avoid stacking and piling items. If your gear is easier to access your garage will stay organized for longer.

Peg board is a good way to organize tools, sports gear and any other random household items. It is easy to install, cut into different sizes and there is a wide variety of hooks and pegs that can be used with it.

Use cut PVC Piping to hold drills, shovels, rakes and more

Screw the lids of mason jars to the under side of a shelf or the ceiling and use the jars to hold screws, nuts, bolts and any other small miscellanies bits and pieces.

Use a piece of lattice or a sono tube for storage of longer pieces of wood, pipe or metal

Magnet strips are an easy way to store drill bits, wrenches and other metal tools in an accessible way.

Save space by building shelves above your garage door track.

Baked Caramel Apple with Maple Walnut Ice creamServes: 2 Total time: 45- 60 minutes

Ingredients:

2 Granny Smith apples2 tbsp. butter3 tbsp. brown sugar½ tsp. cinnamon4 caramels

Instructions:

1) Preheat your oven to 375 degrees

2) To prepare apples, slice off the top ¼ (save to munch on while dessert is baking) and a thin slice off the bottom to

with a small spoon. If you are feeling a little adventuresome you can make your apple bloom! Using an up and down motion like a sewing machine needle and a sharp paring knife, cut a line about halfway down through the apple between the scooped out core and the peel. Then from the top of the apple cut down about halfway as if you are cutting wedges of the apple.

3) Place your apples in an oven proof dish, unwrap caramels and place two in the center of each apple. Melt your butter and mix with sugar and cinnamon. Divide the mixture over your apples.

4) Bake at 375 degrees for 20-35 minutes or until your apples are tender and begin to soften.

5) Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer apples into serving bowls, top with a scoop of maple walnut ice cream.

Options include using a vanilla ice cream or adding a caramel sauce drizzle or raspberry sauce.

Day 1 - YVR/Beijing Check in at Vancouver International Airport, an afternoon flight. Your adventure begins as you cross the International Dateline! Day 2 - Beijing Arrive in Beijing, the Capital of China. You will be met at the airport by your tour guide and transferred to the hotel. Day 3 – 4 Beijing Visit the Tian An Men Square, the largest square in the world, and the Temple of Heaven, built in 1420 A.D., where the emperors prayed to the heavens for a good harvest. Sightseeing today will continue with a tour of the Forbidden City, (Palace Museum) home of 24 emperors with a total space of 9,999 rooms, and the Summer Palace, featuring the Long Corridor with painted gallery, Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, Seventeen Arch Bridge and the Marble Boat. Sightseeing also include Lama Temple. Day 5 - Beijing Tour bus excursion to the Great Wall, the 4,000 mile long and 2,000 year old construction is said to be the only man-made structure visible by the naked eye from the moon. Visit the Ming Tombs. One of the 13 Ming Emperors' Tombs is fully excavated and open for exploration.

Day 6-7 - Beijing/Shanghai/Suzhou Fly to Shanghai, followed by a bus trip to Suzhou for the Lingering Garden, Tiger Hill, and the National Embroidery Institute to see silk embroidery, a local craft with thousands of years of history. Dinner this evening will include a show featuring traditional Chinese music. Day 8 - Suzhou/Hangzhou Morning tour bus excursion to Hangzhou for a visit to the Economic Development Zone and the centuries-old Lingyin Temple, featuring a 64.3 foot high camphor-wood carving of Buddha. Day 9 - Hangzhou/Shanghai Morning boat cruise on West Lake with relaxing stopover at jewel-like pagodas and tea houses. Afternoon tour bus trip to Shanghai. Day 10 - Shanghai Visit the Yu Garden, a maze of marvelous pavilions, ponds, rocky works and overarching trees. Also visit the Bund, Shanghai’s famous waterfront park. Tour the Pudong Economic Development Zone. Day 11 - Shanghai/Vancouver Morning free. Depart for Vancouver in the afternoon, arriving back in Vancouver on the same day.

Spotlight on a Venture – Smartsettle by Dr. Ernest Thiessen, President & CEOof iCan Systems Inc. –creators of Smartsettle.

1. What is Smartsettle, why did you create it and how can it benefi t the agriculture industry?

Smartsettle is an eNegotiation system that enables negotiators to analyze their preferences and model the problem so that alternatives can be compared with ease. The Smartsettle process quickly leads collaborating parties to an optimal solution for all. Unlike our competitors who can only handle single-issue negotiations between two parties, Smartsettle is a tool that can effi ciently address complex negotiations with any number of quantitative or qualitative issues among any number of decision makers.

Smartsettle is rooted in an experience I had in Nepal with a water resources development negotiation among multiple stakeholders with very different interests. Even though this project won the UNESCO Blue Planet Prize in 2005 I knew that the outcome could have been better. My insights later led to a challenge from my major advisor at Cornell University. He said that there was a huge gap between what engineers recommend and what decision-makers do.

The presence of confl ict requiring a formal solution represents an application for Smartsettle. These opportunities exist everywhere. It is my hope that this will be recognized by early adopters in the agriculture industry and this will lead to widespread applications throughout that industry.

2. How did you hear about the Agri-Tech Venture Acceleration Program and what made you interested in joining?

I heard about the Agri-Tech Venture Acceleration Program from a colleague who found it on the Internet. He recognized that the service offered by SRCTec was just what our company needed at this time.

3. What was your experience like during training? What sections did you fi nd the most benefi cial?

The training experience was great! It provided us with tools, guidelines and methodologies to launch Smartsettle into the business world. The class was small enough to really be able to benefi t from the instructor knowledge; the instructors were thorough and honest in their teachings and feedback. The instructors pushed us to implement what we were learning in class in the guise of ‘homework’. Being able to talk about the experiences we were having with that was very useful.

4. Have you had a chance to go through any one-on-one mentoring? If so, how was your experience?

Experienced and knowledgeable mentors can recognize precisely what we need and give us a helping hand with relevant introductions. The one-on-one mentoring may turn out to be the most valuable aspect of the program for us.

5. Are you fi nding additional benefi ts to being in the program?

The referrals and advice from being in the program have been extremely valuable.

6. Are there any other training programs like this out there? What makes our program unique in your eyes?

I have previously been in a similar program that was sponsored by the National Research Council of Canada. I am fi nding that the follow-up and mentorship aspects of SRCTec’s program is unique and superior for us.

Fraser Valley audiences will once again be delighted and entertained as Fraser Valley Stage brings the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls to the Abbotsford stage for fi ve performances in early March.

With a sizable cast of more than 40 singers and dancers, FVS will bring the antics of high-rollin’ crap shooters, their scatter-brained girlfriends and the resolute mission members to the stage with lively dance routines and classic songs such as Luck Be a Lady, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat and I’ve Never Been in Love Before.

Guys and Dolls conquered Broadway in 1951, running for 1,200 performances and winning fi ve Tony Awards.

“It’s a period classic. In post Depression days it was fun to be in New York, living the dream with infl uences of the raucous and the righteous,” said FVS co-producer Marg Kennedy.

“This group is not going to disappoint. The quality of the chorus is right up there with some professional shows,” added Kennedy. “We excel in choral work with big strong voices. Hearing the guys sing will give you goosebumps.”

In its 45th year, Fraser Valley Stage has deep roots in the community. The society has performed many lavish Broadway musicals, including Oklahoma, Brigadoon, Fiddler on the Roof and others; and they’ve taken the international stage by storm with their Gilbert and Sullivan operettas The Mikado, Iolanthe, H.M.S. Pinafore and Princess Ida, where they won several awards at G&S festivals in the UK.

Directed by FVS’s Paulina Harskamp, with musical direction by Chad Joiner (MEI), and choreography by Debbie Calicetto (Candance Studios in Mission), this show promises to be a big hit with audiences of all ages.

“There’s lots of colour and action, taking the audience from the sewers of New York to the clubs of Havana, lots of song and dance and lots of activity,” said Kennedy. “And . . . it’s a love story with a happy ending.”

Mission’s Answer to Homelessness is a Story as Old as Time...Lanka Jewels and VanCity join the MissionStone Soup Movement

It’s no secret that homelessness has been a growing concern for communities across the Fraser Valley, provincially and even nationally. In many communities, the onus has been placed on seeking government funding and programming, but a growing movement in Mission is revisiting a much older approach, returning to the story of Stone Soup for their inspiration.One of the project’s leaders is Paul Horn. “It’s a story each of us was told as young children, but the lessons of Stone Soup have never been more pertinent than they are today.”

The story begins when a group of travelers enter a village. They are clearly starving, so they approach the locals asking for something to eat. But the local people are suffering through hard times too. Believing they have nothing to offer, they turn the travelers away.

The Mission Mid-day Rotary ClubThe Mission Mid day Rotary Club isissponsoring a volunteer dental team towork in Buriram, a northeastern rural province of Thailand, in February 2016. Buriram is one of the poorest provinceswith one of the lowest education levelsin Thailand.

The focus of treatment will be on the 140 children and 30 staff of the Mechai Bamboo School as well as emergency care for the villagers in the surroundingarea. The school was founded by SenatorMechai, who has been instrumental inimproving the lives of the rural poor inThailand. Tuition is paid by the studentsand their families by planting 400 treesand completing 400 hours of community service for every school year. As well as receiving an education, the studentsand their families also learn practical agriculture based skills.

The team consist of 20 volunteers – 6dentists (Dr. William Tyler, Dr. Gloria Tyler,

Join the Mission International Cultural Association this October 2016 for an exciting Japanese experience!

The District of Mission signed a sister city relationship agreement with Oyama-cho, Shizuoka, Japan in 1996. Community leaders from Oyama initiated discussions with Mayor Randy Hawes as they felt that the similarities between the two communities warranted a special relationship; both communities are considered small to medium sized towns, have similar proximity to a major urban centre, and share geographic elements with major rivers and large mountain views. The relationship has developed into one of sharing cultural experiences and developing lifelong friendships through a series of 9 delegate visits with each delegation consisting of 20 to 30 community leaders and residents.

Members of the Oyama International Friendship Association haveextended an invitation to the members of the Mission International Cultural Association to visit Oyama in October of 2016. The basis of the visit will be to attend and participate in the Oyama Cultural Festival on October 15th, 2016. The Mission/Oyama Cultural Exchange is an opportunity for citizens of Mission to share their experience and culture with citizens of Oyama.

The delegation will likely be a 7 - 10 day stay in Oyama and will work via a “billeting” system of accommodation, where participants stay with a family in Oyama for the duration of the exchange. OIFA organizes tours of the community and surrounding locations, and Mission citizens participate in activities intended to demonstrate aspects of Japanese culture. Outside of coordinated events, participants may also engage with their host family for tours of local points of interest or other activities.

This exchange is open to any citizen of Mission who is over 18 years of age (or receives special permission from MICA and OIFA). Exchange participants are required to pay their own transportation costs to Japan (this will be coordinated with a travel agency instead of each participant organizing their own transportation). Also, participants will be expected to manage their own spending money (a good lower limit to expect is Y5000/day, or approximately $50CDN/day). Participants will also need to participate in a number of preparation meetings with MICA prior to the exchange. These meetings are expected to begin in April 2016, and will likely increase in frequency as we get closer to the exchange. When in Oyama, participants will need to engage in cultural exchange events, which will include tours, cultural demonstrations and activities, and performances (both by Oyama and Mission citizens). Above all, participants must remember that they are guests of OIFA and Oyama, and are representatives of Mission in every aspect.
