Quest Elementary School in Viera organized the Viera Musical Theatre Troupe (VMTT) at the beginning of the school year. As an “at large” ju-nior thespian troupe, it is an extension of the Quest Players Drama Club.

Students from Kennedy Middle School, Manatee Elementary and Quest Elementary participate in this

joint venture. Students in grades six through eight have the oppor-tunity to pursue their interests in the theatre via competition as well as in live on stage presentations.

The Viera Musical Theatre Troupe had the opportunity to compete in the district Junior Thespian Festival on Dec. 10, 2011 at Melbourne High School. This resulted in the Troupe earning 11 superior ratings, five excel-

lent ratings and one Best of Show rating. This competition included solo vocals, musical duets, lively monologues, pantomime, impro-visation acts as well as musicals. american Pickers: treasure or trash?with Frank Fritz and Danielle colby

a fast-paced interactive eventcoming to the King center on Sun., Feb. 26, 7 p.m.

Picking isn’t your grand-

mother’s antiquing. Pickers like Frank Fritz are on a mission to recycle America, even if it means diving into countless piles of grimy junk or getting chased off a gun-wielding homeowner’s land. Hitting back roads from coast to coast, pickers earn a living by restoring forgotten relics to their former glory, transform-ing one person’s trash into another’s treasure. American Pickers follows Fritz and histo-rian Mike Wolfe as they scour the country for hidden gems in junkyards, basements, garages and barns, meeting

quirky characters and hearing their amazing stories. If you think the antique business is all about upscale boutiques and buttoned-up dealers, the wildly successful show on the History Channel may change your mind—and teach you a thing or two about Ameri-can history along the way.

Now the hit show, American Pickers, comes to life with a unique, fast-paced and highly interactive event. As audience members enter the theater, they will receive a raffle ticket. Within the 90-minute show, numbers will be drawn and the audi-ence members holding the matching numbers will have an opportunity to appear on stage with show stars Fritz and Danielle Colby. Once there, the selected audience members will choose from a category of items similar

to those that The Pickers find on their show (i.e. signs, toys, oil cans, bikes, furniture, motorcycles, etc.). Images of two items will pop up on a big screen after the category is select-ed. Each of the images will have a value known only to Frank and Danielle. The selected audience member then has the job of pick-ing which item is a trea-sure and which is trash. See how much you know about what you may have in your attic, basement or garage.

The event will also con-tain video clips and outtakes from the show, discussion of their picks and their travels all over America. The event will be followed by an opportunity for the audience to meet Fritz and Colby, purchase merchan-dise from the TV show and autograph signing sessions.

Fritz started picking early; collecting rocks and beer cans as a child. He worked for many years as a fire and safety inspector but always had a passion for antiques, junk and anything with an engine. These days, he spends most of his time on the road, digging for trea-sure in barns, garages and junkyards across America.

Even-tempered and affable, he has a way with potential sellers and a knack for putting out fires: Wolfe calls him the bearded

charmer. Fritz does get a little carried away, however, by anything with an engine, and often has to be talked out of buying yet another motorbike for his collection!

With their comple-mentary personalities and shared love of picking, Fritz, Wolfe and Colby make the perfect team.

While the guys are out picking, Colby holds down the fort at Antique Archae-ology. She spends her time talking to buyers, packing up shipments and keeping Wolfe and Fritz in line, while they keep her in stitches with their antics and jokes. Wolfe likes to say she’s the glue that holds them all together.

A mother of three, Colby is always working on a new creative project, whether it’s painting, designing clothes or selling vintage-inspired gifts online. She feels ex-tremely proud of the “boys” and fortunate to work with such a talented pair. For information, call 321- 433-5719. VV

ViERa VoicE George whiteHusband and wife Allan Reid and Aira Kekale, owners of Quilts and Lace, 7720 N. Wickham Rd., Suite 111 in Suntree.

High-tech and traditional sewing offered in same shop

BY GEoRGE whitE

Mixing traditional sewing with high-tech advances is only part of the charm of Quilts and Lace, 7720 N. Wickham Rd., Suite 111.

The 2,400-square-foot store, offering sewing machines and supplies for quilting and all types of sewing, has an international flair.

It is owned and run by husband and wife, both former engineers, Allan Reid, originally of Scotland but raised in Ireland, and Aira Kekale, originally from Finland.

“We’re geared toward sewers and some of it is old-fashioned Celtic stuff. My wife teaches classes in heirloom sewing which

includes the introduction of lace in many of the patterns,’’ Reid said.

“Other instruction offered at Quilts and Lace include the use of new sewing machines, traditional sewing classes and lessons on how to prepare digital images for computer-aided embroidery,” he said.

“We opened on 11-11-11 but our real grand opening is Jan. 21. Whenever you start a business, you build up your inventory. By then everything we wanted should be here,’’ he said.

Kekale’s mother was a dressmaker in Finland, and she learned to sew at a young age, on a treadle Singer sewing machine, but that was not her childhood dream occupation.

“When I was raised in Finland I wanted to be an astronaut, or a truck driver but I became an electrical and control engineer. That‘s why it’s so ironic that I ended up here so near to where the space program is located,’’ she said.

The shift in professions from engineering to sewing shopkeepers has had some surprising overlapping moments, according to Reid.

“Some of the technologies in the new sewing machines is amazing so I don’t feel I’m that far away from engineering. It’s probably more leading-edge than I would have encountered had I stayed in engineering,’’ he said.

Update

If money were no object, how would you spend your time?

I would spend it cruising or travelling to places I had not seen previously or been to and enjoyed immensely. My hubby and I have practically been around the world with the Air Force so now we are trying to see the entire USA.

What can we always find in your refrigerator?

My fridge has milk, fresh veggies and fruit, yogurt, cheese and the usual array of condiments.

What are you reading

right now? Patricia Cornwell’s

Scarpetta Factor.

What was the last movie you saw in a theater?

Disney/Pixar’s CARS 2 in 3D. I enjoy cartoon shows that are for everyone.

Who are some of your favorite singers?

If you were talking country & western, it would be the Statler Brothers, Hawaiian would be the Brothers Cazimero or Ne Leo. I enjoy danceable rock and roll, Jimmy Buffett and the Gaither Family.

What is your pet peeve? When people tell you they

will do something and then won’t do it until you nag them.

Would you rather be

chased by one vicious Rottweiler or 10 angry Chihuahuas?

I would rather be chased by one vicious Rottweiler as I am truly a big dog person. My last pet was an Australian Shepherd and something elsed mixed. He weighed about 80 pounds and truly though he was a lap dog.

Can you change the oil in your car?

Yes, I can, since I have a

What do you consider the most important invention of all time?

I know the brain is not an invention, but I consider that the most important part of a human being. Without it, none of the inventions we have today would have been made.

What one word would

your friends use to describe you?

Ford Pinto that I purchased at the credit union before I even learned to drive. I did not start driving until I was almost 30 years old as most places I was stationed at had a great public transportation system, or I could ride my bike or walk. VV

Should I consider be-coming a board member of my association?

You may be asking your-self this question, or maybe someone else is urging to you to become a board member, and you’re not quite sure how to go about it or are wondering what is in-volved. At your association’s annual meeting, election to the board is usually the main item. Some associations will have a difficult time finding board members and others will find themselves with hotly contested elections.

This month’s column will endeavor to answer most commonly asked questions.

Why should I get involved?

Civic responsibility. Often, I compare the workings of an association to a local government.

Just as your local govern-ment needs the participation of its residents, your associa-tion needs your involvement.

What are the qualifications?

Primarily, it’s your com-

mitment and interest. Residents who feel they have no special expertise often are surprised to find out how fast they learn the responsibilities. A good property manager or incum-bent member will provide the necessary orientation for new members.

What are the responsibilities?

Space in the newspaper does not allow all details. Generally, the board is responsible for overseeing the business affairs. This involves protecting and en-hancing the common areas and assets. Association by-laws detail board responsi-bilities. Also, Florida condo-minium, homeowner, and not-for-profit corporation law has additional stipula-tions. If an association has

any questions on legal aspects, an attorney should be consulted.

Can you be more specific?

Each board will vary in the way it conducts business. Items of concern include conducting meetings, formu-lating and implementing the budget, overseeing vendors, enforcing rules and procur-ing insurance.

Who does the actual work?

Many associations hire a management company or an on-site manager who carries out the directives of the board. A good manager will also keep the board informed of any issue that requires attention. Some as-sociations are self-managed by board and committees.

What do I do at board meetings?

Most im-portant is to be prepared. The man-ager should have pre-pared a package of informa-tion before the meeting. Ask ques-tions before

the meeting. Be as objective as possible. Remain friendly and cordial. If the conversa-tion becomes heated, remain calm and support the author-ity of the president. Be sure that all issues are thoroughly covered before decisions are made. Serving on the board can be a rewarding experi-ence if approached with the right attitude.

It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a re-quirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@ suntreeflorida.com. VV

local couple recreates Eisenstaedt’s iconic photo

ViERa VoicE linda S. humphreyBob Bridges returns the dress blue Navy jumper to Alice Morris on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 after he borrowed the item from the Cocoa Army and Navy store on U.S. 1 in Cocoa for a specific photo shoot.

BY linDa S. hUMPhREY

It truly was—and still is—the kiss seen around the world.

It has been 66 years since the sailor kissing the nurse made its debut in LIFE magazine. Alfred Eisenstaedt’s camera captured the couple kissing in New York City on August 14, 1945 in what has been dubbed his V-J Day in Times Square, one of the most recognized photos ever. The spontaneous kiss was in reaction to the surrender of Japan, ending World War II. The sailor and the nurse did not know one another, although later in life they did correspond from time to time.

SENIOR LIFE staff envisioned Bob Bridges, a retired commander with the United States Navy, as the one who would be perfect to recreate the iconic kiss for this month’s cover story. And who better to play the part of the nurse than his wife of 30 years, Marie, a certified nursing assistant.

Bridges recalls his thoughts after being asked to portray the sailor and whether or not his old uniform would still fit.

“I could still wear my original pants and still had my

hat, also known as a Dixie Cup, but needed to find a dress blue Navy jumper or Cracker Jack as we called it,” said Bridges. “I lucked-out when Cocoa Army and Navy store loaned me just what I needed.”

Alice and Kendall Morris own the Army and Navy store where they offer a huge selection of clothing and other supplies representing each branch of the military.

“We do, from time to time, loan out some articles of clothing for special events,” said Alice Morris. “We were happy we had what Bob needed.”

Marie Bridges said she felt right at home in Bob’s arms while being photographed at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville.

“We have had decades of practice,” she said.

The Merritt Island couple confesses to being bitten by the acting bug having secured non-speaking parts in two movies, Contact with Jodie Foster and Instinct with Cuba Gooding, Jr. They say their real-life relationship and how they met and combined their families into one is more like a scene from the movie Officer and a Gentleman.

These days Bob and Marie fill their retirement days working. Bob works part-time at Target and delivers SENIOR LIFE in Central Brevard. Marie works at the Health Center of Merritt Island. Their full-time job, however, is the most important in their lives—raising their 4-year-old grandchild.

Come to the second annual Boomer Senior Guide Expo on Friday, Feb. 10 to meet Bob and Marie Bridges and experience a “Blast from the Past.” The expo will be your first opportunity to pick up a copy of the award-winning directory to clubs, organizations and support groups.

Disposal of American flags is serious business and not to be taken lightly. Thankfully, the Veterans Memorial Center on Merritt Island has a convenient system in place, brought about by the support of Home Depot.

“When they are faded, torn, tattered or ripped they should be disposed of properly by burning them. It doesn’t require a ceremony but it should be respectful,’’ said operations manager Forest Gilder.

Flags are gathered for disposal by American Legion Post 344, which is housed in the center. Gilder said they use a pit funded by a $1,100 grant from the Home Depot Foundation with many

Home Depot employees helping with construction.

The center has offered free disposal of flags for about four years. They started with a painted mail box for after-hours drop-offs.

“We had them stacked up for a while and we’re always accumulating them. It’s hard to say how many we’ve burned since the start, but it’s probably thousands,’’ Gilder said.

The flags are constantly coming in, ranging from huge 60- by 80-foot flags flown over car dealerships to personal flags flown by home owners, according to Gilder.

“We’ve even found the little ones on sticks that the kids wave during parades,’’ he said. “American Legion

members say the Pledge of Allegiance while the first flag is being burned with the other flags added after that.”Other America flag rules include:

• Display the flag with the blue union field up. Never display a flag upside down except as a distress signal.

• Never let it touch anything beneath it including the ground, the floor, water or merchandise.

• Keep the flag aloft and free. Never carry it flat or horizontally.

The Veterans Memorial Center is located at 400 S. Sykes Creek Pkwy in Merritt Island. For more information, call 321-453-1776 or visit veteransmemorialcenter. org. VV

Giving Trees project Special to VIERA VOICEMany Brevard County residents received gifts this

Christmas season through the St. John the Evangelist annual Giving Trees project.

Trees in the church’s lobby were adorned with more than 300 ornaments, each identifying an individual and his or her special Christmas wish. Members of the parish selected an ornament and purchased gifts, which were at the request of area non-profit organizations, as well as the Holy Cross Mission in Peru.

“During Advent, we are on a spiritual journey in prepara-tion for Christmas. Part of this journey is to help those less fortunate,” said Fr. Brad Beaupré, C.S.C, pastor of St. John the Evangelist. “The Giving Trees are designed to bring joy and hap-piness to others. That’s the true meaning of Christmas.”

Several area organizations provided the names and spe-cial wishes noted on the ornaments. These included Catholic Charities/Brevard Family Partnership (Devereaux), the Central Brevard Sharing Center, Genesis House, the Student-Parent Program (Brevard School System) and Senior Santa. St. John also collected donations for the Holy Cross Mission in Peru.

National Hug Day is upon us

Beginning Genealogy class

BY anGEla SMith

Don’t be alarmed if strangers want to hug you on Jan. 21. After all, they’re celebrating a holiday.

Since 1986, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has recognized the day as National Hug Day, where people offer a hug to someone as a way to help show more emotion in public, while giving minds a positive energy boost.

“There’s so much that happens in our brains chemically when we have human interaction and human touch, that without it our brains don’t develop properly,” said Viera licensed mental health counselor, Kellie Garza. “With technology, life’s becoming so rigid and robotic. National Hug

Day can be a reminder that we don’t want to lose that human contact and how important it is.”

Despite scientific research and a day devoted to the wordless gesture, it recently had two Rockledge lawyers fighting to support the right to hug.

“One of the greatest things about the job we have is protecting people’s rights and for us it was an opportunity to preserve one young man’s rights,” said Kendall Moore, of Moore Eavanson PLC, who represented Nick Martinez, who was punished for hugging a friend at school.

While Moore, and his partner Trizia Eavenson, supported their client’s right to hug, they also understood why the rule was in place. They wanted to assist in the

connection between Nick’s mother, Nancy Crecente, and the school district on how complex it can be from the other end.

“I don’t think having a hugging policy in itself is wrong,” Eavenson said. “I think the policy itself is confusing when students can hug at a school basketball game or by a teacher at an award ceremony and I think that’s why Nancy wanted to go ahead and get on a committee to clarify it a bit for others.”

As for Nick, he admits he occasionally catches himself before embracing his friends at school.

“It’s important because some people really don’t have somebody to give them a hug or be there for them,” said Martinez, who plans to celebrate the hugging holiday outside school. “A hug can make somebody’s day.” VV

Doing things a little differently has filled the lives of Charles and Pearl Fruchtman, originally from Brooklyn, NY, now retired to be near family in Viera.

Now 90, the couple still enjoys life, including Charles, who stays in shape by playing two-handed tennis for more than an hour, three days a week.

“I play with a racquet in each hand and play in a racquetball court, bounc-ing it off the front wall. I play about an hour and a half each time. I don’t feel good, I feel wonderful. I‘m 90 and I’m still here to tell the story,’’ he said.

Charles Fruchtman made a career out of in-terior decorating, includ-ing draperies and bed spreads, in the Belmont Avenue area of Brooklyn.

“That’s where I got my

start. I started when I was 16, measuring fabrics. I stayed on Belmont for many years and eventually went into it myself,’’ he said.

His work method was simple yet effective. He would go to the client’s apartment and look around to visualize what would look best. He would then go down to his truck and bring only two bolts of fabric to give the client a choice, but not too many choices.

And the key: he would go back personally to make sure all work was satisfactory.

Proud wife Pearl Fruchtman notes that her husband worked from home and never had a storefront, yet had a successful business because of his reputation for doing things correctly.

“It was all word of mouth because he never advertised. It was all rec-ommended,’’ she said.

The couple started dating at age 15 and retired

at age 59, moving to Boca Raton to be near their three daughters. Now there also are six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

“If everybody was born with my parents, nobody

would have to worry,’’ said daughter Rose Catarelli. Other daughters are Suzan Grandt and Sharon Robbins.

The Fruchtmans credit their longevity to good medical care, no smoking or

drinking, and telling each other “I love you” every day.

“We just were lucky with our doctors and try to stay active,’’ Charles Fruchtman said. VV

ViERa VoicE George whitePearl and Charles Fruchtman, 90, stay active in Viera.

When a restaurant expands, you can determine two things. It must have many loyal customers to feed, therefore it needs more space — and the food must be especially good, or people wouldn’t be going there or referring their friends. Amici’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria, located at the Boardwalk of Suntree Plaza completed the addition of a banquet room last year and is now celebrating the one year anniversary of its attached bakery. Expansion followed by more expansion seems to be the order of the day for owner David Dashi. “It was a very hard decision in the beginning to expand, but I had to do it to have more room for people, for parties, rehearsal dinners and other functions,” said Dashi, who, with his wife Valentina, owns the treasured hideaway. “It’s working out very well. It’s made a difference because we can do so much, now.” Both additions are producing new revenue, in a time where some

With tasty and artfully presented entrees ranging from $10 to $15, many regular customers make Amici’s a routine for entertaining clients and for family-style dinners. Dashi said he believes he had no choice. “I used to turn away a lot of functions because I had no room, and for me to chase my regular customers out — I couldn’t do that. I’ve got people here now who’ve never been here before and that’s generating business.” Word of mouth has always been his best advertisement. Once the word got out that the restaurant had expanded to accommodate larger parties, the customers began booking the room. The art of authentic food and repeat customers isn’t new to Dashi, who comes from New York, where his parents opened the original Amici’s. His brother manages the New York Amici Restaurant. Since 2007, with his penchant for business and skills in the kitchen, Dashi and his wife have made a splash locally, as evidenced by their packed dining hall and growing list of bakery orders. But Dashi isn’t one to take all the credit for the success of the banquet room they can’t keep empty or the jump start of the bakery. Dashi attributes that to his wife who roams the restaurant to be sure each guest

“Every single person who comes here is famous in my eyes, because they’re supporting you. People in Brevard County are amazing,” Dashi said. “The great thing about it all is word of mouth through my customers and if you know you want good food, if you know you want a good bakery, you know where to go.” Amici’s Italian Restaurant offers a full bar and often, Amicis or friends will meet at the bar for a drink and they’ll end up staying for a meal, according to Dashi.

Two of Dashi’s

favorite dishes to prepare also tend to be favored by his clientele. Chicken Amici is a tender chicken breast with prosciutto, mozzarella cheese and roasted red peppers in a sherry sauce. Chicken Rollatini is pasta stuffed with mozzarella, prosciutto and fresh basil. “Don’t forget, we also cater,” Dashi said. Stop by the restaurant located at 7720 N. Wickham Road in Suntree/Viera to pick up a menu or download one from amicis-suntree.com. For more information call 321-255-5377.

First-year coach Josh Neff approached the Viera High boys soccer season with a long-term goal to build the Hawks up so that they’re playing their best at the end of the season.

While the defense has shown a noticeable improve-ment this season, Neff was hoping to see more of a scoring punch as the sea-son draws to a close. Using the regular season as sort of an extended preseason to prepare for the playoffs,

the Hawks coach sounded pleased with the way the team has developed through-out the year.

District play is set for Jan. 23 through 27, and it is be-lieved the Hawks will have to get past arch-nemesis Melbourne High to advance to the district finals – most likely against Sebastian River – and a spot in the Class 4A regional tournament.

“Hopefully, our peak is good enough to beat Melbourne High and Sebastian River.”

ViERa VoicE carl KotalaDec. 13, 2011 — Senior goalkeeper Kevin Montes has recorded three shutouts this season. Coach Josh Neff said, “He’s been a big part of our ability to defend. His communication is top notch. It helps whoever’s in the back out a lot.”

ers for Viera this season has been senior goalkeeper Kevin Montes, who had recorded three shutouts through the first 11 games of the season.

The Hawks have also gotten strong play from a pair of freshmen starters, Dominic Carrillo (center mid) and Scott Alliance (left back). Their presence bodes well not only for the current season, but for the future as well.

Junior Rafael Ayala was leading the team with seven goals. Joseph Heiselman was also having a solid season along with Captain Jordan Lannon, who stood out defensively. The surprise player of the year has been senior Cole Neff (no relation to coach), who played club soccer as a youngster, but concentrated on golf once he got to Viera.

“He’s been the definition of a utility player,” Neff said. “You can almost put him anywhere and he can fit right in. He’s probably our best ball winner … really big heart.” VV

WRESTLINGViera is enjoying another solid season, finishing third at the Marvin Haven Duals and winning the McBride Memorial Duals at Satellite High. Viera finished 16th at the 31-team, high-powered Cougar Invitational at Durant High. Junior Josh Amos (126 pounds) started the season 13-3, while junior Hunter Waite (132) and senior Jonathan Ken-ney were both 11-1. Senior Kole Kimberly (195) was 12-2; senior Dalton Ren-nie (152) 10-5; senior Tom

Fish (170) 9-4 and freshman Evan Placke (120) was 8-2.

BOYS BASKETBALLThe Hawks scored a 51-16 victory against Space Coast in the debut of new head coach Josh Sykes. After beating Palm Bay 43-33 to improve to 2-1 on the sea-son, the Hawks had dropped their next four games head-ing into their first district game of the season against New Smyrna Beach … Through six games, Erick Dejesus was leading Viera with a 12.0 scoring average. Rodney Bryant was next at 10.2 and Keith Neterer

was averaging 9.5 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALLAs expected, the Hawks got off to another strong start, taking a 9-2 record into their first district game against New Smyrna Beach. In those nine games, Viera held its opponent to under 20 points five different times. Maggie Davis and Ro Hayes were leading the Hawks with a 14.1 scoring average. Dee Anderson was next at 12.9. Davis also led the team in assists (2.0 per game) and was second in rebounds (3.0) behind Alex By-num (3.4). VV

The Viera High School girls soccer team headed into the Christmas break in typical dominating fashion.

But that doesn’t mean everything is same old, same old with the Hawks.

“We’re a lot fitter team this year, and we move the ball a lot faster now, where before we used to dwell on it and kind of get caught when we played against the bet-ter teams,” Viera coach Steve Richards said. “Now, our speed of play is a little quick-er. We’ll see what happens.”

The Hawks, who were off to an 11-1-2 start, were an-ticipating another rematch with Melbourne High in the district finals. Viera has had to get by this season with-

out high-scoring stand-out Jackie Stengel, who sustained a knee injury while playing for her club team, and prom-ising freshman Hope Leonard, who also went down with a knee injury.

Picking up the slack has been … well, every-body. The Hawks have been getting strong play from senior captain Maddy Nagy as well as junior Taylor Calhoun, senior Kiera Keesecker and senior Olivia Thompson.

Goalkeeper Sami Lewin had made 51 saves in 13 games with nine shut-outs. Mariah Lewis was the team’s leading scorer with 13 goals and five assists, followed by Joy

Wilkinson with nine goals and 10 assists. Thompson and Eva Banton had both scored eight goals, while Nagy had six goals and six assists.

After starting the season strong, the Hawks had seen the level of their play dip even though they continued to blow past the com-petition, but Richards believed the team would be ready to go full bore once it got back from break, just in time for the start of district play, which runs from Jan. 16 through 20.

“Once they come back, then we’ll step it back up again,” he said. “We should peak in January.” VV

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to hold a successful science fair, but at Suntree Elementary School, it doesn’t hurt, either. Students hosted their families in a night of science, art and music at the school on Dec. 13.

The event is a run-up to an event Jan. 17, where parent volunteers from Lockheed Martin will help students launch rockets and provide a robotic demonstration at Family STEM Night.

STEM is a combina-tion of science, technology, engineering and math skills instruction that is important to higher level science and math coursework in sec-ondary school and beyond, all of which are critical elements for a successful space and defense indus-try on the Space Coast.

Students worked on science projects all semes-ter, entered in 4 categories – biological, environmental, physical and team, by grade level. The STEM approach was used in the science fair, teaching science concepts and skills, often at a higher

level, technical writing, reading informational text, public speaking skills, data analysis, organization and time management. It teaches the scientific process and supports science inquiry, according to Suntree science coordinator Jana Gabrielski.

“Plus, it’s a lot of fun, and that’s a another critical factor to success in learning,” Gabrielski said as she scur-ried around the morning of the event to facilitate volun-teer judges — some of them parent volunteers from the space and defense industry

— and to make sure each child’s exhibit had a good viewing space.

Inviting parents in to view students’ works is important, and gives the school a sense of family by doing things together as a group, accord-ing to Suntree Principal Mecheall Giombetti.

“Research shows the importance of parental involvement in a child’s school success. Parents are their children’s first teach-ers and we strive to have a solid relationship with parents and families so that our individual efforts can be amplified exponentially,” Giombetti said. “Including student musical performances and an art show made it a richer sensory experience.”

Q: How did Viera home sales in 2011 compare to 2010?

A: The national news may lead you to believe that the real estate market was all doom and gloom in 2011. However, home sales are very specific to a geographical area or town. We had a good year in real estate sales in Viera. In 2010, there were 642 homes sold in Viera and Suntree through Dec. 9, 2010. I don’t have the stats yet for all of December as of this writing, but from January to Dec. 9, 2011, there were 793 homes sold in Viera and Suntree. This area continues to lead Brevard as a destination for incoming home buyers.

Q. I understand you specialize in the luxury and executive home market. Was it more difficult for owners to sell these types of homes in 2011?

A. Not necessarily. A home that is priced right and which has desirable features to the buyer—in any price segment—can sell even in a tough market. In 2010, 21 homes over $500,000 sold in Viera and Suntree. From Jan. to Dec. 9, 2011, 34 homes in this price range have sold. In May 2011, I sold a stunning 5,400+ sq. ft. former model home in Suntree which was listed at $1,097,000. The home was under contract in 42 days. I received more inquiries from potential buyers on this house, than I did with many of my lower priced listings. The key to selling your home quickly is to price it competitively, market it strategically and uniquely, and also make it as “show ready” as possible. This is called “staging” your home. A realtor with staging experience and a creative flair can help you stage your home to show it at its best.

Q. Has the Space program negatively affected Viera’s home sales?

A. Not really in Viera. Folks relocate to our town for many reasons, from a new job, to retirement, to second home buyers. Numerous major employers such as Patrick Air Force Base, the hospitals, engineering firms, and other local companies are hiring. It’s a great time to list your home for sale in Viera and Suntree! Again, the key is to price it right. Don’t have the highest priced home in your subdivision unless you have the features and amenities to back up your asking price. Your realtor should be prepared to justify your sale price in terms of price per square footage. And of course, enlist the help of a realtor who is also a marketing expert, to optimize your home’s presentation, including its internet presence.

Brevard County School Board members will receive a policy Jan. 24 that out-lines the use of advertising in schools, everything from ad-wrapped formerly yellow school buses to KFC in the cafeteria.

School board spokeswom-an Christine Davis is creating the policy according to input from a November workshop. Board members steered her away from selling advertis-ing in core classrooms, and favor hiring a professional staff person to work for the district, rather than contract-ing with an outside firm.

“This way, we will be sure we are effectively generat-ing revenues for programs that might otherwise have to fold, and make sure it is done without exploiting our students,” said Davis, who is crafting the policy with Mark Langdorf, head of risk management.

While some other districts across the state allow sales of advertising to students, Brevard County will model their plan after Orange County, the only other dis-

trict that does not use an outside firm.

“In addition to less control, you only receive a portion of the proceeds when an outside contractor is used,” Davis said. “We want to keep all of the revenues.”

Advertising would be more limited on the elementary school level, and skip the classrooms, where students spend most of their day, for all ages. It would be allowed in shared rooms such as music, art and physical edu-cation, especially in a gym-nasium where crowds are housed beyond the student body, like parents and com-munity events.

After receiving the draft of the policy at the Jan. 24 school board meeting, board members will have until the Feb. 14 board meeting to request changes. If no major changes are required, it can be approved at that meeting, or tabled to a future meeting to address content changes. For more information or to provide input, contact Davis at 321-633-1000, Ext. 796, or email [email protected]. VV

Schools look for workshop topics

Brevard County Schools want to know what topics should be discussed at school board workshops in the coming year. Teachers, staff and board mem-bers as well as the pub-lic, are invited to submit topics of concern and interest.

“It’s a way of mak-ing sure we are ad-dressing the concerns of everyone, but also of making sure we are taking advantage of the resources we have in the community for solutions to challenges,” said schools spokes-woman Christine Davis. Call 321-633-1000, EXT 796 to submit your suggestion. VV

church looking for bigger digs

BY linDa wiGGinS

Hope Lutheran Church is looking for a new home to tide the congregation over until its dream home is ready for construction in West Viera south of Wickham, a move put on hold for 10 to 15 years due to the weak economy.

“We’re getting too big for where we are at,” said Rev. Mark Moreno, a missionary who was selected by Faith “Viera” Lutheran Church to cultivate a following in the area west of Interstate 95 south to Pineda Causeway.

The move is needed not so much just because the church is bursting at the seams, but because it wants to put more outreach programs on line, according to Outreach Director Dorothee Jones.

“We want to do more programs that are open and free or low-cost to the entire community, movie night for kids, date night for parents, after school, weekends, you name it,” Jones said. “Whatever might attract folks, we want to be there to offer fun, but with the point being that the Word of God, Jesus, is the solution. You can have lots of fun — true joy — fellowshipping together with others who feel this way too.”

Among outreach efforts,

Moreno holds weekly Christ on campus meetings at the elementary schools in Suntree and Viera, except for Manatee, which is served by another church.

Students recently col-lected toys for Toys for Tots, a program coordinated by U.S. Marine volunteers that serves low-income families. Moreno, a reserve Navy officer, serves as chaplain for Marines at military bases around Florida.

Hope Lutheran is currently located in a Suntree strip mall at the southeast corner of Wickham Road and the old Pineda Causeway.

Moreno is currently researching properties preferably along the Wickham Road corridor, from Palm Shores to Viera.

On Dec. 8, the Viera east ladies 9-Hole Golf Association, celebrated its annual Christmas luncheon at the Black Tulip restaurant in Cocoa Village.

In lieu of grab bag gifts, the ladies contributed a donation of $135 to Toys for Tots. The singing golfers entertained the 28 members who attended with Sue Buttner at the piano. Sue helped substitute golf lingo to some Christmas carols such as “We Wish you a Merry Christmas” to “we wish you’d take some golf les-sons, we wish you’d take some lessons.” VV

OPEN New Year’s Eve From 5-8pm

Once again, the Viera Company and the community of schools and businesses came together to begin the month of December with festivre air that lasted into the beginning of 2012. The annual tree lighting ceremony is always held on Dec. 1.

This year’s decision to move the 25-foot-tall tree to the Home Discovery Center at Shoppes Drive and Wickham Road was brilliant, according to some who attended the event.

Viera Realty opened its doors for tours and hot cocoa and other businesses sponsored the cookie decorating tent and other activities. Local school choirs sang and members of the Viera Woman’s Club assisted where they could.

Children waited eagerly for Santa’s arrival on a fire truck and when he entered the area, everyone’s attention turned to the tree as the jolly man in red turned the lights on for the massive tree. The smiles tell the rest of the story.

After weeks of sweets, eggnog and holiday stress, 2012 has arrived, along with New Year’s resolutions.

With so many people resolving to exercise and eat healthier each New Year, health food stores and fit-ness centers around Viera know the routine firsthand.

“We almost always see an influx of customers,” said Kurt Nall, owner of Appleseed Health Food in Rockledge. “Locals want to make New Year’s resolutions, and eating healthier is one of them.”

Nall says this time of year is great for business.

“This is our busiest time of year,” he said. “January, February and March are probably the best months as far as seeing new customers. During the holidays there’s so much good food, and there’s a lot of it, so people are ready to change when January comes around.”

New Year’s resolutions aren’t only for Nall’s custom-ers this year. His store has one of its own: to be more active in the community.

“We just had our first of what we call a locals’ fair,” Nall said. “We hope to begin doing that more often and showing support with lo-cal farmers, local magicians and musicians; community involvement is something we really aspire to help support and create.”

It’s not just health food stores that notice the in-crease in people wanting to shape up and make their own business resolutions.

Gyms are doing the same. Elliot Cohen, spokesper-

son for Health First, said, “One of the most important roles Health First can play in the community is not only to help people who are sick, but just as importantly, to keep people healthy. Good health care starts with help-ing people stay as healthy as possible, and Health First, through its Pro Health and Fitness Centers as well as other programs, works hard to keep the commu-nity on the right track.”

Although the usual slump of resolution goals begin to fade by spring break, Cohen says there’s plenty to keep resolution enthusiasts going.

“The majority of new members tend to stick with it as long as they do it properly,” Cohen said. “That’s why we offer personal trainers who can work with new members and set up a fun routine.”

Tips to keep resolutions going

Eating healthyMake one healthy choice at a time. “People think they have to

change everything all at once, but it’s usually best to start with one thing, like a healthy smoothie every morning,” says Nall. “It’s got to be a lifestyle and a routine that you’re in, something that’s not a diet or hard to do.”

In addition to health foods, Appleseed also of-

fers juice fasts. The most popular one is set for Jan. 13 through 20. For more infor-mation, call 321-631-1444.

With working out, says Cohen, “The number one rule to remember is that any new workout routine needs to be started in moderation. You need to set reasonable, attainable goals. If you set unrealistic goals, you will become discouraged when you don’t meet them, and you will quit prematurely.”

Pro Health and Fitness offers the Jump Start pro-gram, which is a discounted personal training package intended for new members who want to take advan-tage of the professional training. For more informa-tion, call 321-434-9149.

ViERa VoicE Photo (L-R) Owners Rene & Kurt Nall of Appleseed Health Food Store in Rockledge are preparing for the annual New Year’s resolu-tions rush of new customers. Owner Kurt Nall says he does inventory and pre-orders everything in the beginning of December so the shelves are packed.

BY ELLEN CoMMoNS-HARRELL

Auld Lang Syne is often sung at the end of the old year after the clock strikes 12 a.m. It is sung in many cities from New York to Hong Kong as the time zones change.

Boy Scout jamborees, graduations and funerals close with it. In the United Kingdom, Labour Party con-ferences end with the song.

The press berated Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom for not properly crossing her arms during the song’s rendition at the 2000 Millennium Dome celebra-tions. However, she was correctly following the Scottish tradition.

Every Scot knows the correct fashion is to form a circle by taking the hand of the person to either side, waving them gently in tune to the music. During the fifth and final verse, the singers cross their hands.

In 1788, Scotland’s Robert Burns sent a copy of the original song to the Scots Musical Museum with the remark, “The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man.”

Auld lang Syne loosely translates to “old times’ sake,” and is sung at the end of the year as a remembrance

of the things that have trans-pired in the past 365 days. The words pose a question as to whether it is right for old times to be forgotten, but call for remembering long- standing friendships. The question is clear: Should those we knew and loved be forgotten and never thought of? No, says the song, we should remember those times and people, toast them and keep them close. VV

the country legends tribute concert returns for two shows

The Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy’s Athletic

Department relies solely on fundraising to operate its 39 sports programs. Except for coaches’ stipends, the department receives no funding from the school.

Lenny Paoletti, director of athletics, calls on his wife’s talent to help the department raise money through con-certs. The Country Legends Tribute sold out all 900 seats last year, so this year, the fundraiser will include a second show. Shows will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. Tickets can be purchased at Holy Trinity or online at countrylegendsband.com. VV

It wasn’t the first time Patricia Williams got overwhelmed on her job. As a trainer for volunteers who escort abused and neglected children through a maze of court dates and judicial rulings, she won-dered how to get the word out about the need for more Guardian Ad Litem volun-teers. And she wondered how to raise money so these GAL volunteers – who enter the children’s homes and know their needs – can make small purchases to give their charges a sense of normalcy. Many of the children have been removed from their homes for their safety, and feel anything but normal. The solution came to her faster than a speeding bul-let. Brevard’s first annual Guardian Ad Litem Super-hero Run will launch Feb. 4 at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, where adults, children and families can dress up as their favorite superhero and walk or

run to raise awareness and money to help GALs serve children’s needs, or simply show up and spon-sor their favorite heroes.“The idea is that these vol-unteers are the closest thing to superheroes as you’re going to find in the entire social services community,” Williams said. “They are the most humble, most will-ing to give of themselves,

and the least interested in recognition of any kind.”Take Patti Reges for in-stance. A 17-year GAL veteran, she refuses to let distance, money or time be an excuse.“She leaps tall obstacles in a single bound, sees through red tape, and can fly over objections for children,” Williams said. “She is there for the many children who might feel lost or alone if not for her steady presence.”Jack Graziano and Bill O’Hara are both in their 80s and refuse to let age be their kryptonite. Half the GAL volunteers are over age 65.“I feel fortunate that I can make a difference in my children’s lives, whether they are babies or 17 year olds,” O’Hara said.

Donations are pay-able to Friends of Brevard County Children, a non-profit set up to receive tax-deductible gifts to enhance services of the local government agency.

To register for the run or find out more about volunteering, go to GAL-SuperheroRun.com or call 321-508-4595. VV

ViERa VoicE PhotoThe Feb. 4 Guardian Ad Litem Superhero Run will be the first such community event in Florida, first launched by the GAL’s national network, Court Appointed Special Advocate Association, which hopes to spread the event across the state.

BY MaRY BRothERton

On Jan. 27, at the Great American Outdoor Adven-ture Day, John Trieste will give a free presentation on Florida day trips. Since 2005, he has been writing a month-ly column for Senior Life, the sister publication to Viera Voice. He introduces readers to inexpensive, educational and fun excursions that can be made in a day or two.

Trieste said that he came up with the idea for his col-umn because he and his late wife had many friends and relatives from the New York area who visited the Central Florida theme parks before stopping in to see them at their beachside condo.

“In the course of conver-sation,” Trieste said, “they would mention they spent up to $5,000 on one week’s vacation for a family of four or five. In many cases this was at least one year’s savings for these folks.”

Always frugal, he said that he envisioned more reasonable ways to enjoy Florida. “I’m not against theme parks but they are a very expensive vacation for the typical family.”

John and Adele Trieste often took friends through-out the state to discover other wonderful educa-tional, family-orientated and

inexpensive destinations.SENIOR LIFE has pub-

lished more than 70 of his destinations, which can be made in a single day. Each one has his personal ap-proval rating. He said that his favorite day trip was from Route 192 beach-side, south on A1A to Vero Beach. The most he has spent on a day trip was for admission to the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach.

“It is well worth the price of admission, $15 for adults and $8 for children. This is an exceptional museum.”

He estimates the aver-age day trip costs less than $30 per person for a full day, including lunch and dinner.

“Overnight trips are another story. Add lodging at an average of $45 per person, double occupancy per night. In many cases the motel or hotel includes a continental breakfast at this price. Not bad.”

According to Trieste, the most interesting destina-tion he has visited is the Florida Carriage and Horse Museum in Weirsdale, Fla., with more than 160 fully restored, historical European and American carriages.

Trieste lived his entire life in New York City before retir-ing to Florida to be near his daughter and granddaugh-ters. After a stint in the Army,

he had a lifetime career as a trade printer in the com-mercial printing industry.

He is active within AARP, the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce, the New York State Club and sev-eral nonprofit organizations.

To learn more about the many wonderful, inexpensive and educational destinations just a few hours from Brevard County, visit John Trieste on Friday, Jan. 27 at 12:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Viera.

Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)

The great horned owl is native to the Americas. The

name is derived from tufts of feathers on its head that look like horns.

The owl pictured here inhabits a wooden box in-stalled in a pine tree cavity. This man-made shelter was intended to host translocated red-cockaded woodpeck-ers in a Brevard County state park. When the opening was charred and enlarged by a forest fire, the great horned owl claimed the territory. Inept at building a nest, this owl frequently settles in an existing bird or squirrel nest. For example, at the Viera Wetlands, a great horned owl family utilized an eagle nest.

This large predator is nocturnal and crepuscular (hunts at twilight). Sizable eyes and wide-range binocu-lar vision (seeing an object with both eyes simultane-ously) are crucial to capture game in low light. The eyes are immobile within bone sockets; consequently, the owl stares ahead only. This projects a wise appearance. To compensate for the restriction of its vision, the owl’s flexible neck enables the head to turn 270 degrees to scan for prey. Plus, keen hearing, due to the higher posi-tion and angle of the right ear, helps pinpoint the direc-

tion of sound. Hunting often oc-curs from a high perch on snags or poles. Predominant prey are small to medium-size mammals, preferably hares and rabbits.

On a still night, the loud call of the great horned owl travels several miles. VV

ViERa VoicE Mary BrothertonMembers of Kevin Gustke’s Cubscout Troop 783 toured the “Viera Voice” office on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 to see how the community paper is created. The scouts are students at Manatee, Ralph M. Williams and Quest Elementary schools.

BY MaRY BRothERton

Kevin Gustke has been a Cub Scout Den leader for 1 and a half years. The ranks progress from Tiger to Wolf, Wolf to Bear, Bear to Webelos as the boys grow older.

He is the Den Leader for Viera Bear Pack 783 and said, “My son loves Cub Scouts and I became a leader to spend time with him and help him have a successful scouting experience. My younger two boys will be in Cub Scouts some day.”

The Electrical Engineer at Harris Corporation has lived in the Viera area since 2004 and in addition to playing games and sports with his four children or coaching, he keeps active with his

church, his children’s school, homework, sports and of course, scouts and family time.

He said, “I also enjoy playing and learning the piano, world history, cosmology, comput-ers and online games with my friends.”

Becoming a Den Leader felt natural to Gustke who was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout growing up.

“My dad loved scouting,” he said, “and I enjoyed spending time with him in scouts when I was a kid.”

He has fond memo-ries from his days as a scout. “As a Cub Scout, my fondest memory is coming in third place in my pack’s pinewood derby, den meetings games and snacks, skits, and a den cheer. I made lifelong friends even

as an 8-year-old Cub Scout. As a Boy Scout my fondest memories are spending time with my father, canoeing in Canada, spending time with my friends and accomplishing the rank of Eagle Scout.”

In early 2011, Pack 783 was on a nature hike when they witnessed something astounding.

Gustke said, “The cubmaster was pointing to some birds flying by. In the direction he was pointing a B2 bomber appeared and flew over us. It was cool to see nature and our most advanced military hardware at the same time.”
