shipped from N.C. A few years later, the celebration moved to the lake on the corner of Wickham and Murrell and each year another large tree was shipped from a northern grower. This year, the tradition continues, with another

move and another tree. When live trees repeatedly shipped to Florida with VFF decided to invest in Commercial Christmas Displays professionally decorates the 25-foot tree as they do the celebrated

He worked with children who have behavioral issues and said, I worked with many different types of kids over the years and have learned that they all have one thing in common. Though he claims he doesnt possess a single artistic bone in his body, the director at the Rec Center put him in charge of teaching a Home school arts and crafts class and he has performed in the Broadway smash Aida at the Cocoa Village Playhouse. Highlights of Vieras 2011 January 2011

Viera Means Business, the local networking breakfast group began the year with vol-unteers signing up to partici-pate in Senior Lifes Tech Know Expo. As the year progressed, the group became more in-volved in community activities and events. Rather than sim-ply exchanging business cards, this group of professionals has discovered what networking means for their businesses and the community.

To celebrate Valentines Day, Viera Voice held a contest to determine which local couple was the most romantic and gave away a photo package. This is also when Bruce Cadle, the Date Night Chef, was intro-duced to the community.

In March, the Indian River Colony Club celebrated its 25th anniversary as a com-munity. When Viera Hospital opened in April, Health First met the communitys ex-pectations for a truly grand opening.

We learned, in April, that the Rockledge Blockbuster was closing, but in May we learned that Publix is coming to Viera. May was also when, along with its sister publica-tion, Senior Life, Viera Voice brought the Sleuths Mystery Dinner Show to Viera for a sold out crowd of enthusiastic detectives.

The beginning of the school year brought many new faces, including Viera High Schools new principal, athletic director and football coach. The follow-ing month, we introduced the schools new basketball coach. Another new beginning was the paved road leading to the Viera Wetlands, eliminating the need for visitors to drive through the water treatment facility to see some of the areas most amazing wildlife.

October was a banner month for Viera. The Art of Sand moved from the beach to the Space Coast Stadium and Viera Voice launched the inaugural Scarecrow Stroll and Harvest Festival, a fund-raising, family event to Scare away Hunger by providing more than $1,000 in cash and hundreds of cans of food for the local food bank. The Viera VoiceN. Wickham Road, started its own mini art gallery with amazing works by local artists and worked with Senior Life to once more bring a sold out Sleuths show to Viera this time for two shows.In November, Wuesthoff Health System celebrated Womens Health Month by bringing PowHer Fest to

The award-winning Guide is a respected source of informa-tion about events and activi-ties and as the readership has grown, so has the publica-tion. Several years ago, Jill Gaines, the publisher, asked her photographer to bring some of his friends to pose for the cover and they loved it. Last year, she conducted a model search and was over-whelmed with the response. She decided to add even more excitement and drama to the 2012 issue by making the issue nostalgic and creating a destination event for the launch party. The second an-nual Boomer Senior Expo will take place at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville and promises to be more exciting than ever.Several models from Viera and many more from throughout Brevard County will dress in wardrobes from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and many will be at the expo in February in period costumes.Ruth Magrini, a sales direc-tor with Mary Kay Cosmetics, is passionate about recycling and humane care for animals. Mary Pat Brennan so im-pressed the publisher last year, she was asked to re-turn for the 2012 issue. The born on St. Patricks Day, so was named Patricia. She sailed an Egyptian felucca up the Nile River, manning the tiller.Registered Dietitian Liz Ann Falcone went to college part time for 14 years while rais-ing her three children.Judy Gendron, another familiar face to the Guide brought her cats with her when she moved from New England three years ago.

She said, When I was a kid I caught the eye of one of the managers of Bob Hopes USO tour. I traveled to New York City to meet Bob Hope.Moraitis about the model search before she read about it in VIERA VOICE. The retired Special Education Teachers Assistant currently volunteers at Viera Hospital. The avid Green Bay Packers fan grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and said that -in was J.C. Penney.Mary Tusas husband encouraged her to send in a photo. The retired secretary is now an accomplished com-petitive swimmer who said, I love having fun, and meeting new people. BY LINDA WIGGINSFamilies may spend a free day of fun at Harmony Farms Blizzard at the Barn Sunday, Dec. 4 from 1 to 4 provides equine-assisted therapy to children and adults with special needs.The holiday open house will feature a petting zoo, pony rides, treats to feed horses and photo opportu-nities with costumed mini-equines and Santa. Food and fun vendors will free day on the farm for the family to enjoy, said Pam Morrison, program manag-riding instructor, and it is a great opportunity for us to share with the community the great things happening at Harmony Farms.One major update entails a change in plans to move the farm to 110 acres of leased county land at the west end of Wickham Road behind the water treatment plant.Instead, Harmony Farms will stay on land owned by the Duda family for several more years and expand by 14 acres to allow additional programs to come on line. The existing farm is at 5300 Stadium Parkway.One new program will be Horses for Heroes, a targeting veterans returning from combat deployment suffering from post- traumatic stress disorder, brain injuries and other physical trauma.The existing farm site will eventually be turned into residential development. Proposed planning is underway to create a per-manent home for Harmony Farms that will also include for sale, retaining Vieras farming heritage.The area will likely be a buffer between the blend of

Youll spend all your time on your business and never be able to be in business, which is the reason we open a business.Speaking of location, Knisley saw the handwriting on the wall at her previous location in Maryland. The recession has hit the area particularly hard because of its proximity to and dependence upon govern-ment jobs, and Knisley could not see an end to the cuts.She sold her business, put her house on the market, held a huge garage sale and moved to Viera, where she had visited friends in March. She did some market research, saw that there was no pottery painting store in the area, and drew up a business plan.I guess you could say I had temporary insanity, which is why I made the business name rhyme with crazy, Knisley said. BY CARL KOTALAIn the minutes before it was time to sign her national letter of intent to play basketball at Georgia Southern University, Viera High senior forward Maggie Davis made it a point to call her teammates, friends all those who had come out to support her up near the stage for photographs.Each one of them is important to me, Davis said. I would not be here if it wasnt for every single one of these people in this room.And what a celebration it was as Davis signed to play for coach Rusty Cram and the Georgia Southern Eagles following a memorable visit to Statesboro, Ga.When you go to a college to visit, you get that feeling, Davis said. And as soon as I entered the campus and met all the people and the coaches and the girls, I had that feeling. I knew it was right.The offer didnt come in a a team dinner at a local restaurant. Cram told the recruits he was going to do a song and dance before he told Davis and the others he was offering them a full

scholarship.Davis accepted almost right away and will be taking her talents to the Division I level.When I go to college, Im considered a swing player its where I can play guard or forward, she said. I can can also be really aggressive against people who are bigger than me. I would say

W^Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata)The northern shoveler, a medium-size duck, is named for its large, elongated spatulate bill that widens towards the tip. The comb-like projections the water; the duck facilitates this process by swinging its head from side to side. At hatching, the duckling does not bear this special spoon-like bill. The characteristic shape develops with maturity.Nourishment is found in open wetlands with emergent vegetation. Mud-bottomed shallow marshes, rich in invertebrate life, are ideal for this dabbling duck. Essential nutrition includes plankton (minute animal or plant life), aquatic insects, mollusks, crustaceans and seeds. This is a dichromatic speciesthe male and female differ in color. In breeding (alternate) plumage, female is inconspicuous in grayish brown. However, in non-breeding (eclipse or basic) plumage, the male

resembles the subtle female. Fortunately, the freshwater of the Viera Wetlands attracts the spectacular northern shoveler when it migrates from regions such as Canada and the north-central United States. VV

In some associations, a board meeting or annual meeting can be a very lonely place. Recently, I heard a resi-dent say that nobody attends the board meetings anymore. A homeowners or condomin-ium association may hold an informational meeting pos-sibly to discuss next years budget or to introduce the board candidates and the par-ticipation is minimal relative to the size of the association. What can be done to encour-age involvement in association meetings?It has been my experience over the years that when meeting turnout is light, own-ers are generally pleased with the way the board is managing and maintaining the associa-tion. When your association residents are unhappy with something or they have a promote, be assured they will show up at a board meeting. Here are some suggestions that may perk up your associations meeting turnout.Try expanding your notice. In Florida, associations are required to post notice of the meeting 48 hours in advance.

Condominium associations must post the agenda. In many associations, this notice is posted on a bulletin board. If your association has a website, post it there. Some associations have the ability to do eblasts, another tool where they send bulk email to all members. Also, think about posting signs throughout your association. Consider changing the time or day of the meeting to make it more convenient. Parents often spend evenings with their families. Seniors and suitable to attend a daytime meeting.

Try making your meetings a social event while your busi-ness is covered. I have expe-rienced associations serving coffee and punch. Also, Ive managed an association that served a light brunch at their meetings. The room was al-ways packed! The association I manage now, Suntree, gives out door prizes to owners at-tending the annual meeting.If you are happy and content with the way your association is managed and maintained, consider attending one of your associations board meetings to compliment the board on their good work. That is some-thing I rarely see. Board mem-bers are volunteers who put in many hours on your behalf and I am sure they would like to know you appreciate their efforts. Its important to point out
