Sitting at Viera East’s Suseda Park on Murrell Road is now a therapeutic experience thanks to a new Florida-friendly butterfly garden installed by volunteer civic leaders.

The five-member board of the Viera East Community Association oversees maintenance of Suseda and Clubhouse parks and irrigation and landscaping along area roadways.

“Butterfly gardening is a way to help visitors to the park relax and connect with nature,” said Craig Ryan, VECA treasurer and chairman of its Parks Improvement Committee.

Another planned VECA improvement to the busy park is expanded parking. The lot is used by hikers who enjoy the adjacent overwater boardwalk trek to a large island preserve south of Viera Boulevard.

The next wave of benefit to man and nature comes in the form of food for birds and bees, as well as the butterflies.

“We need to help sustain our pollinator population, which is now threatened worldwide, because they are a critical element in our food chain and ecosystems,” said committee member

The kidney-shaped garden is approximately 20 feet by 40 feet and bordered with recycled materials. It contains both nectar plants and the host plants that provide a home for the eggs, food for the caterpillars and a site for attachment of the chrysalis for the transformation to butterfly, putting the entire lifecycle on display.

The butterfly effect continues by reducing the amount of fertilizer and pesticides required to maintain green turf, ultimately helping things that swim and creatures that

feed on them, which includes mankind.

“I like the look of turf, but I look at a lawn as a functional thing,” said Sally Scalera, urban horticulture agent and Master Gardener coordinator with the university of Florida Institute of Food and

Agricultural Services, which provided technical assistance for the project. Master Gardeners Sara Morrison, Jean Baker and Kathy Parse volunteered on the project, assisting with design and native plant selection.

“But maybe we don’t

need a huge yard of just turf. Grass for kids and pets to play on, and maybe we can do helpful, beautiful, Florida-friendly things with other areas. This will ultimately reduce the amount of harmful chemicals that end up in the Indian River lagoon through groundwater and storm water runoff.”

Residents interested in creating a butterfly garden on their own property, right-sizing their use of lawn care products and picking Florida-friendly plants can attend Scalera’s three-hour My Brevard yard course Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Viera Regional Park Community Center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way. The cost is $15. Attendees can then request a site visit to their home for $30 to test soil for precise lawn-product needs and for technical support in creating Florida-friendly settings.

Scalera will give a free talk on creating a butterfly garden at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 7 in the Florida Institute of Technology Gleason Auditorium during the annual Botanical Fest that runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Now five years since the opening of The Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts at the Florida Institute of Technology, namesake designer Ruth Funk, 93, of Suntree still very much enjoys visiting the facility.

She reflected back on its origin and her ongoing philanthropic relationship with the Melbourne school.

“It’s been a wonderful experience to have this center. I try to go to the openings if I can. I don’t think there are more than five textile centers in the country and it’s a lovely campus. It’s had wonderful participation. We have 30 docents, and lectures. It’s been very successful. I’ve been amazed,” she said.

highlighting the collection are traditional handmade textiles, embroidery, garments and related accessories from Africa, Japan, India and Central Asia; European and North American embroidery and samplers from the 16th through the 20th centuries; and contemporary wearable art and fiber arts.

The two-story center features 3,000 square feet of exhibition space, 2,500 square feet of collections storage and work space, 700 square feet for a mezzanine library and 600 square feet for a lobby and grand stairway.

Funk’s relationship with Florida

Tech, as highlighted on the school’s website, began in 2003 when she participated in the “Dreamweavers” textiles exhibit and gala.

In the fall of 2006, the Funk Textiles Gallery opened in the Crawford Building with the mission of highlighting objects from the collection and offering free exhibits for the campus and surrounding community.

The Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts opened its doors with a dedication ceremony on Aug. 29, 2009.

The center being named Ruth Funk is a little embarrassing to her but also a great honor, she said.

“I never thought it would happen that way, but the school decided to do it,’’ she said.

In addition to monetary pledges, Funk has donated her collections. Sharing her vast collections of international textiles and dolls as well as books is a way to pass on her love of all things creative, rather than only sewing, she said.

And the entire trend was ultimately prompted by her decision to write her book on textiles, “Cloth and Culture.”

“I’d been making clothes for a long time and the thing about it is, you can always sell the good things and you’re left with the dogs. I thought ‘I can’t do this anymore,’ and that’s when I wrote the book,’’ she said. VV

united Methodist Church’s Cuba mission are hopeful but cautious about news of a potential thaw in relationships between the united States and the impoverished communist country 90 miles off Florida’s coast.

“It can’t do anything but good ― it can’t be anything but good,” Connie McCavour, coordinator of the church’s efforts to aid its sister church, Iglesia Methodista El Redentor in holguin, Cuba, said of possible closer ties. “But at the same time, we’ve been there, we’ve seen the poverty and we’ve seen the need and we’ve seen it for so long that we’re very cautious about saying, ‘Well this is it, everything’s going to be great now.’ ”

After more than 50 years of animosity, U.S. and Cuban officials opened talks in January in havana aimed at normalizing diplomatic ties. Negotiations followed President Barack Obama’s December declaration that the U.S. commercial, economic and financial embargo against Cuba had failed and that the united States plans to open an embassy in havana and take other steps toward better relations. only Congress can lift the embargo, which has been in

place since 1960.For more than a decade,

the 2,600-member Suntree united Methodist Church at 7400 N. Wickham Road has been sending money, supplies and missionaries as well as offering spiritual support to the tiny 200-member church near Guantanamo Bay and its four outlying mission

chapels yareniquen, ojo de Aqua, Matamora, and yabita. The church’s efforts are under the umbrella of Methodists united In Prayer, which strives to link Methodist churches in the United States with more than 300 Methodist churches in Cuba.

“One of the main things we do is bring them over-

the-counter medicines,” McCavour said of missionary trips. “We take them Sunday school supplies, books in Spanish, coloring books for the kids, crayons, things like that, that they don’t have in Cuba. Even if they had the money, they can’t get them. The average wage in Cuba among those who are actually employed — and

many are not — is about $15 a month. And then they get subsidized a little bit with rice and beans and sugar. And that’s it. They go to bed hungry. you can’t believe how they’re living.”

Normalization of relations and an end to the embargo would enable Cuban stores to carry more products that are scarce in Cuba, and money from SUMC would allow El Redentor congregation members to buy those items, said McCavour, who has traveled to Cuba five times on church missions. The church also would be able to mail aid directly to Cuba instead of shipping items through a third country, reducing sometimes-exorbitant postage and customs costs, she added.

SuMC assistance enabled the crumbling, termite-ridden El Redentor to be rebuilt from the foundation up. Today, the church attracts overflow crowds who gather on the church’s porch or watch a projection of the service on the building’s second floor, McCavour said.

El Redentor’s four missions have benefited as well. “We got one church a house and property so they could establish their church, but in the beginning, they met under a big tree,” McCavour

SuMC’s 2015 goal is to raise $12,000 for its sister church, McCavour said. The church presents several fundraisers each year, including a Cuban dinner and a Christmas bazaar in which some proceeds go toward the Cuba mission. Church members are asked to donate to El Redentor on May 24, Aldersgate Day.

While McCavour is cautiously optimistic about the prospect of more openness between the united States and Cuba, the Cuban people served by SuMC are thrilled about closer ties with the united States, she said.

“They’re so excited because they have hope and they feel like everything is going to be

great now, things are going to turn around overnight,” McCavour said. “But we know the way government works, and it could be months or years down the line before they really see any difference in their lives in a big way by legislation passed on this side of the water. And as far is that side of the water is concerned, trying to get the Castros to loosen up the strings a little

bit is like pulling teeth out of a lion. They don’t want to let go.

“So I can see it’s going to be great in the long run, but in the beginning it’s going to be a long slog. But it’s absolutely necessary. These people have suffered so much.”

Manatee Elementary School will launch a Dr. Seuss-themed community 5K run fundraiser Saturday, March 7 to update educational technology and promote reading. Schools across the nation mark the March 2 birthday of “Cat in the hat” author Theodor Geisel with Read Across America Day themed literacy events to get children excited about reading.

The new “Thinga-ma-Jogger 5K Race” culminates a week of favorite events planned at Manatee. other new events include a Seuss-themed Scholastic book fair, a recycled book drive to benefit Nemours Children’s hospital and “Oodles of Noodles with Oodles of Fun” family pasta dinner, dress-up book parade and photo booth that Friday night.

“So often, reading is a challenge for our young students and this day transforms any reluctant reader into an energetic

student enjoying the events,” said Manatee school librarian Tricia Kuhblank.

“I look forward to this

event each year, allowing the child inside of me to come out dressed as Cat in the hat to entertain and inspire our young readers at Manatee.”

Also new this year is the inclusion of students in grades three through six.

“our older students were always so disappointed not being able to participate. On the official March 2 date,

our entire school will have a ‘Stop, Drop and Seuss’ reading time at the end of a day of testing. This day also

brings so much needed joy for the teachers. our staff goes above and beyond, dressing up and adding more activities to their class schedule. I hear students raving about what they did for weeks afterward. So many smiles, confident readers and silly songs fill our hallways. our entire staff loves stepping away from the normal routine to put on their red and white hats and celebrate reading. Manatee families will remember this for a long time.”

Mason Sands likes to use his own creativity to lose himself in his imagination.

But never in his wildest dreams did the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy junior picture himself going to the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships after taking up the sport a little more than a year ago.

“When they told me I made it to Junior Olympics, I didn’t believe them at first,” Sands said. “They were like, ‘oh, you passed,’ and I’m like, ‘oh … oK.’

“I didn’t know what that meant. It didn’t register that I’d actually made it into the Junior Olympics.”

The 16-year-old will travel to Richmond, Va. to compete in the épée event at the Junior Olympics, which will be held from Feb. 13 to 16.

Sands, who lists writing, singing and acting as some of his other interests, was introduced to the sport during a two-week class he took between his seventh and eighth-grade years when he was still living in Georgia and

took an instant liking to it.“I’m very imaginative, and I

also love history,” Sands said. “I think fencing is just the embodiment of both of these things. When I’m fencing, I sort of don’t feel like I’m myself.

“I feel like I have this sudden connection with history. I think that’s what had driven me to fencing.”

Upon moving to Florida shortly thereafter, he told his mother he wanted to continue to fence. The problem was finding the right club to join.

Just as his sophomore year was starting, they found the Genesis Fencing Club on Suntree Boulevard.

“The more he practiced, the more he discovered his gifts,”

said Coach Daniel Bucur, who owns and operates the club. “he’s very athletic. his reflexes are very good. His timing is good.

“What really has to be noted about him is that in a very short time — not even a year — he was able to absorb information and actually do well with fencers that have been fencing for 10, 15 years.”

While the coach described Sands as an “elegant” fencer with “beautiful lines,” what really sets him apart is his positive attitude. Bucur calls it, “contagiously cheerful. you can tell he’s really enjoying this.”

The success Sands has had with fencing has had a tremendous impact on his self-confidence. Now that he has qualified for the Junior Olympics, it’s at an all-time high.

Good thing he found the right fencing club.

“Coach Daniel has not only given me the skills needed to get this far, but he’s also given me the confidence to get this far,” Sands said. “When I originally started fencing, I had very low self-esteem.

“When I was in elementary school and middle school, I was never one for sports. I could play on a team, but I was never (the star). So I had very low expectations when I came to fencing. I said I’ll just try to eke it out day by day. He really caused me to enjoy the sport and also believe in myself more.” VV

“What they’ve brought in a week, I haven’t seen this team like that in the past five years. That’s really something special.”

“I told the girls, ‘I guarantee we will have a winning season,’ ” Clarson said. “We’re going to manufacture runs. We’re going to do our best to play the best defense we possibly can. They’re already learning drills they’ve never seen before. They’re excited. They’re excited to learn and play.”

They got there in slightly different ways, but both the Viera high and holy Trinity Episcopal Academy girls soccer teams claimed district championships last month.

While a healthy holy Trinity team erased an earlier loss and a tie against St. Edward’s of Vero Beach for a 6-2 victory and its third consecutive Class 1A, District 10 championship, Viera topped Melbourne 2-0 to win the Class 4A, District 6 crown.

It was the second time the hawks had beaten Melbourne this season, but just the third time in program history after suffering a number of stinging losses to the Bulldogs through the years.

“It’s amazing,” Viera junior Jordan Walsh said following

the game. “I remember last year, we went into penalty kicks with them and it was such a heartbreaker when we lost. Just to come back

and win this … I can’t even explain it. It’s amazing. I’m so excited.”

The victories meant that both holy Trinity and

Viera were home for their first round of the regional playoffs. The Tigers hosted Fort Meade while Viera faced off against New Smyrna Beach. Both teams faced potentially tough matchups in the regional semifinals and finals in order to reach the Final Four.

holy Trinity and Viera’s boys teams, meanwhile, were set to begin their district play late last month and both teams were expected to reach — if not win — their championship games, which would also put them in the regional quarterfinals.

While they made their district championship win look easy, the Tigers knew they faced a tough test from St. Edward’s. holy Trinity had lost and tied its two previous meetings this season, albeit without being able to have its full lineup of core players at its disposal.

Bob Doty has always been able to talk about how well his team can pitch and play defense.

But this season, the Viera high baseball coach can talk glowingly about another aspect of his team’s game.

“I think this year, I can say for the first time it looks like we’re going to be able to swing it offensively,” Doty said.

“We look like we’re going to be oK. I’ve not been able to say that since I’ve been here.”

Part of what makes Doty

so optimistic is the way he’ll be able to stack his lineup while also filling in the gaps created by players who graduated last year.

Alex Brait and his left-handed bat will move to second base along with fellow junior Brody legate.

Jackson Prater, also a

junior, will move from the outfield to shortstop and should be one of the team’s better hitters.

Senior Anthony Martinez will get his chance to be the hawks’ starting catcher, while third base will be shared by senior Alec Neal and junior Sebastian Samuels.

Rounding out the Viera infield, improved junior Vincent Benvenuto will man first base.

In the outfield, the Hawks will have junior Noah Van Alstine in center field with a pair of transfers from Melbourne high School on either side of him — senior P.J. Robinson (who will play baseball at harvard next year) and freshman Christian Robinson. Both hit from the left side.

“I’m really excited about the left-handed hitters we can put up there,” Doty said.

The players, meanwhile, say this year’s team is more unified than last year’s group.

“We definitely have a stronger team bond than

we did last year,” Neal said. “There’s a lot more teamwork going on this year than there was (last year). We’re looking forward to the rest of the season, instead of falling off toward the end.”

Neal, who was the team’s No. 1 pitcher at the end of last year, will share the bulk of the pitching duties with senior lefty Jake Buck, who is excited to get his chance to show what he can do in a big spot.

That can be said for a lot of the hawks this season.

“Toward the end of the season last year, the majority of guys in the lineup were sophomores or juniors that were really getting the job done,” Buck said. “looking forward to seeing what they can do.”

While good pitching is the key to any season, Viera’s hopes will more likely ride on what the talented hawks can do at the plate.

“We need to score some runs,” Doty said. “We need to hit. And I think we’re going to be capable of doing that.” VV

Clarson said the Tigers are going to use their speed, put the ball in play and force opponents to execute.

Working with a new coach for the third time in as many seasons could be disheartening, but Clarson’s arrival has certainly seemed to energize his players.

“It’s definitely advanced, that’s what I would say,” O’Neil said. “It’s a different team than what we had out here last year. I think we lost one girl last year, but it’s an entirely different team with what they’ve brought, and with their skill set.”

Boyle believes a winning season is reachable.

“I think it’s possible, because we’re playing a much more appropriate schedule this year,” she said. “We’re still in the district that we’re in, which is really hard, but we’re going to be playing a lot of the smaller Christian schools that are more at our level. I think it will be more competitive and it will be fun.”

O’Neil can’t wait to get started.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited to get the season under way.” VV

NewsschoolStudents learn that washing is a privilege, not a chore

Fifth-grade students at Suntree Elementary School learned recently that what seems like a hassle for some — washing up, brushing teeth — is a privilege for others.

The combined classes of teachers Carol Albright and Monica Slate collected travel-size toiletries for clients at Daily Bread soup kitchen in Melbourne and packaged them in takeaway kits. The experience was an eye-opener, according to Albright.

“We were excited about this activity and thought it was a wonderful way for our children to give back to our community and those less fortunate,” she said.

Daily Bread provides a soup kitchen where about 250 people come for daily hot meals. Amenities include hot showers and other services to help the 35 percent of clients who are homeless. The remaining 65 percent of clients who come for free meals are on the brink of homelessness.

The class project is welcome in many ways, according to Daily Bread director John Farrell.

Students collected and packed toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand soaps, disposable razors, deodorant and washcloths.

“of course there is the obvious need for the toiletries,” Farrell said. “In

addition to the hot meals, we offer clean clothes, bicycles and what we can to help people clean up to go look for work and gain, regain or maintain their independence. But it’s also really important that children learn that there

are those less fortunate and that it’s important to reach out to help in whatever ways you can, which helps raise awareness across the community.”

Students at Quest Elementary School enjoyed the wildly popular hour of Code challenge in December so much that teachers helped them form a Coding Club in January. Students in grades three through six will get a couple of months experience under their belts and then begin mentoring students in kindergarten through second grade in March.

Coding has many high-tech entrepreneurial applications, the closest to students’ lives being those required to satisfy the multi-billion dollar video gaming industry.

“I like how easy coding is. It’s like a big puzzle and I am a very mathematical thinker. It is very easy to me and I like making games,” said sixth-grader harrison Gallagher.

The club meets after school Tuesdays in the computer lab.

It was started by teacher Dani Kazoroski and is co-led by teachers Danielle Brown and Jolene Reyier. Parent Courtney Charles is an assistant. All volunteer their time.

“I think this is an important investment because coding is now becoming an important part of our world,” Brown said. “Computer coding is essentially speaking the language of a computer. It is the platform for websites, apps and digitally produced movies.”

The club uses the Code.org website, which employs a lot of tasks from already created apps and movies such as Angry Birds, Flappy Birds and the movie “Frozen.” The popular media pumps up the enthusiasm.

Teachers and parents connected to the club like coding because it is a learning enhancement. Students are challenged to come up with accurate mathematical increments when writing

code, and they get immediate feedback to see how well they did when they run the code. Either the code works, or they must find the error and press on until it does.

“Ultimately, if these kids really love what they are doing, the possibilities are endless for what they will be doing for the

community or world. There are apps and websites for basically everything you can think of ― saving money, learning, making music, social networking, playing games, etc. They could be the creator of the next big app.”

Brevard County Water Polo announced that one of its coaches and Viera resident Andrea Shaffer was selected for a full Coach’s Scholarship for the uSA Water Polo Olympic Development Program (ODP) Training Camp.

The camp was located at the prestigious U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

For one week in December, Shaffer had the unique opportunity to learn the USAWP’s Olympic training methods and standards with America’s best young female water polo players.

“This was such a great honor and once in a lifetime opportunity for me. I was able to learn from the United States’ best coaches and bring that knowledge back to Brevard. It will help us align our coaching methods with the oDP and also help us spot and nurture potential Olympic talent,” Shaffer said.

Coaches from all over the country were selected, but Shaffer was the only coach from Florida to attend the training camp.

“I was very proud to represent the Sunshine State,” Shaffer said.

Water polo is somewhat new to Brevard County. The Florida Institute of Technology hosted a college club team for three years, but it disbanded last summer. This brought on the official

birth of the Brevard County Water Polo Club, which now trains at the Cocoa Beach Aquatic Center.

“We were so happy to be partners with the Aquatics director, Sara Williams, and the city of Cocoa Beach, who so kindly welcomed our team

to their pool. “Brevard County Water Polo

is currently starting out as a Masters Club but plans to add younger players.

Shaffer, who is also one of the three owners of the club said, “our vision is to grow water polo in Brevard County. We would like to develop several teams, from the little kids who start with Splashball (equivalent to flag football) to developing a high school team(s). Since we started in August 2014, we have had players come out of the woodwork that are so excited to finally find a team in Brevard. Water polo

is very common in South Florida and orlando, but has not really blossomed here yet in Brevard. We really feel as a club if we continue to develop the talent of our coaches and players, our program development will follow.”

The team welcomes new and experienced players.

“The only prerequisite is to be a very strong swimmer as our two-hour practices of treading water and sprinting can be extremely tiring. It’s basically a mix of soccer or hockey with the contact and intensity of rugby,” Shaffer said. “We currently have members of all experience levels from ages 18 to 60. Some of our most talented, experienced and fittest players are in their mid-50s.”

area continues to be a new-business magnet.

A Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant, a PetSmart and a Tijuana Flats restaurant reportedly are planned in the third phase of Viera Shops currently under construction along lake Andrew Drive.

“We are scheduled to open on Monday, May 18,” Randall Groover, regional marketing manager for Buffalo Wild Wings, said in an email.

The sports-bar chain specializes in wings and other American pub grub, beer and live sports on lots of large-screen televisions.

It’s the second Brevard County location for Buffalo Wild Wings, which operates a restaurant at 4325 Norfolk Parkway at the Hammock landing shopping center in West Melbourne.

PetSmart is the nation’s largest specialty pet retailer in the united States, operating 1,387

stores staffed by 54,000 employees, according to its website. PetSmart also offers in-store services such as pet adoption, boarding, grooming, training and veterinary care.

Another PetSmart is at 1800 Evans Road in Melbourne.

Tex-Mex chain Tijuana

Flats has grown to more than 100 locations in six states since the first restaurant opened in Winter Park in 1995. The fast-casual eatery is known for its made-to-order cuisine, hot sauces, unique wall art and its $4.99 Tijuana Tuesdaze special that features two tacos, a side of chips and a drink.

The Viera location joins two other Tijuana Flats in Brevard County, at 1270 N. Wickham Rd. in Melbourne and at 76 E. Merritt Island Causeway on Merritt Island.

Miles for Myles 5K reaches BY KAtIE SIVCO

As the sun rose above Viera High’s Hawk Stadium on a recent Saturday, Tom Freeberg knew it was going to be a special day.

It would be a day filled with mixed emotions as family and friends gathered at the Grand Finale Miles for Myles 5K, an annual event in honor of his youngest son, Myles, who died in the prime of his life following injuries sustained in a car accident back in July 2010.

Organized by the Myles Freeberg Foundation, the 5K event became a local tradition raising funds to provide scholarships and internships to Brevard’s high school students.

Freeberg was not at fault

in the accident; he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. On route to having his senior photo taken, Freeberg was at the intersection of u.S. 1 and Post Road in his Pontiac Firebird when a distracted driver in a Jeep Wrangler accidentally ran a red light and crashed into him. Freeberg had just finished his junior year with honors at Viera high, well on his way to becoming valedictorian. It’s been almost six years since that tragic day. had Freeberg survived, this would have been the year he graduated from college.

The Foundation has been organizing the Miles for Myles 5K events since 2011 after Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High sophomore Hastings Kofkin organized a 5K run-walk as a 10th grade

Elementary at the same time as Freeberg but they were a few years apart in age. It was this 5K initiative

that made Tom and his wife Kathy Freeberg think about forming the non-profit Myles Freeberg Foundation.

To this day, Tom Freeberg credits hastings for inspiring them to create

the Foundation and the five years of 5K events.

so successful over these years. We only had 100 people registered with less than a week prior to the first 5K held on Jan. 8, 2011. We were all worried that we would not collect enough for expenses so I told hastings I would personally pay for the costs of the race shirts if the 5K did not get enough registered entrants.

“As it turned out, we had our largest 5K ever with almost 500 participants. Four hundred registered that final week including about 150 of those registering on the morning of the race. That first 5K was a chaotic, stressful and wild ride, being one of the best experiences in hasting’s, Kathy’s and my life.”

Fast forward five years later and the Foundation has made quite an impact on the community and individual students. Including totals from the recent grand finale event, the Foundation raised more than $70,000 in scholarships and provided 15 internships benefiting Brevard high school students.

“It’s a good time to go out big,” Kathy Freeberg said.

And that’s exactly what the Freeberg family did at this final 5K, raising about $15,000 for the cause. hundreds of people attended, basking in the sunny and mild weather for the final celebration.

“It’s kind of bittersweet. It’s tough to see it end,” said Jeff Draves, Freeberg’s former high school teacher and event participant. “It’s something I’ve done with my boys every year but all good things come to an end. It’s been a great turnout and to have it go out this way is really special for the Freeberg family and the school.”

Suntree Homeowners Association awards one of its own

Mike Beasy was a young man when he first approached the then still burgeoning Suntree Master Homeowners Association about doing some weed whacking for the complex. After all, he had his own weed-eater he told them.

The association had a lawn maintenance service but decided they could use a helping hand with the superfluous work that needed to be done.

That was 30 years ago.Today, Beasy is the

supervisor of facilities who oversees all of the outside

work, including lawn and shrub care and building maintenance. That is no small job in a complex the size of Suntree. With 4,500 residences, Beasy has his hands full. But he enjoys his work and is thankful for the opportunity given him so long ago.

on Jan. 12, he was presented with a plaque commemorating his service with Suntree. The boardroom of the Suntree Master Homeowners Association was packed even as a torrential rainstorm raged outside. Along with the other SMhoA members, Beasy’s wife,

Allie, and his two children, lindsey and Taylor were in attendance. The couple met when she began working with him at Suntree.

Frank Kneiser, the general manager of the homeowners association, presented the plaque and a gift to the 30-year veteran. Beasy seemed at a loss for words as he accepted his award. Told that everyone respects his skills, he held up the plaque and said, “I’m happy that you’re happy. I plan to keep working as long as I can.”

Morning is opening a new location in the old Bealls outlet store in Suntree Square Shopping Center.

“We’re slated to soft open Feb. 15 assuming all goes well with the prep,” Tami Paterson, manager

of digital marketing for Tuesday Morning, said in a statement.

The North Dallas-based retail chain will offer domestic and international closeouts of medium- to high-end name brand gifts, home furnishings, house wares, luggage, toys, seasonal items, gourmet food

and fashion accessories for men, women and children at its new store in the Publix shopping plaza at 7777 N. Wickham Rd.

“We’ll be taking over a 14,000 square-foot space with 11,500 square feet of selling space,” Paterson said. “It will be a bright, new space offering an ever-changing

assortment of name brand products at extreme value pricing.”

Founded in 1974 by Lloyd Ross, Tuesday Morning now has nearly 800 stores in the united States. Ross reportedly decided on Tuesday Morning as the company name because “it is the first positive day of the week.”

After years of sagging sales, Tuesday Morning has enjoyed a turnaround

under the leadership of CEo Michael Rouleau, who came out of retirement to head the company.

When British born and bred Sarah Redmond and husband Ron moved to Florida in 1989, she had no idea she would eventually become involved in a charitable program — Medals4Mettle — to help critically ill young adults and children.

Redmond became involved in the program while running marathon and triathlon races. These included races at Disney, the healthFirst Triathlon and the Pineapple Man Triathlon in Melbourne Beach.

Brevard has many such marathons with hundreds of medals handed out each year. Redmond eventually

accumulated a drawer full of shiny colorful medals.

She had heard of a group in orlando that collected the medals to give to gravely ill children and teens, but her attempts to contact them were unsuccessful.

Redmond also wanted to include children from Brevard County who were hospitalized in Orlando hospitals because there are no pediatric cancer centers in Brevard.

“I had all of these lovely, shiny medals that I thought could brighten up someone’s life,” she said. “They weren’t

doing me a lot of good, stuck in a drawer,” she added.

Finally, she came across the Medals4Mettle organization out of Indianapolis. She made contact with them regarding starting a program for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

“I belonged to the local yMCA and I would ask anyone who would listen for their medals. As the contributions came in, I had a meeting with the Child Life team at Nemours Hospital for Children at Lake Nona. This was on my birthday

in 2013. The woman I met, Christina Anderson, was as excited as I about giving the medals to sick kids.”

Redmond’s friend, Maxi Harmon, became her M4M teammate and they recruited other friends as volunteers who deliver the medals and visit with the children.

Their inventory includes more than 500 medals and they just handed out 250 at the Children’s Cancer Foundation Christmas party on Dec. 20.

Expounding on the success of young writers programs at Suntree/Viera library, award-winning Suntree children’s author Jaimie Engle will teach a monthly advanced course through october.

“It is entirely possible that a writer could come out of this having written his or her first book and have it on the way to the publisher,” said Engle, whose 2013 book “Clifton Chase and the Arrow of light,” is in the hands of many Suntree and Viera elementary school students and many in area middle schools as well. Some classes use it as part of the curriculum.

Engle also is a writing coach for all ages and gives free presentations to youth in schools and has been a writing coach for the gifted programs at Suntree and Quest elementary schools. With an anti-bullying message at the heart of the book’s historical fantasy theme, Engle also is a popular anti-bullying speaker on the topic across the country.

youth librarian Scott hauge, himself an aspiring author, runs programs for Young Authors ages 9 though 12 or up to 16 and Elementary Writers for ages 5 through 8. The new course increases the skill level to the 13 through 17 or older age group, with level based more on writing skill than grade.

“I could see the progression of our youth in our monthly writing courses and when we had the chance to work with Jaimie I knew it would be a

thrill for the students who are ready for this,” hague said.

Young Authors meets from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. the third Thursday and Elementary Writers meets the next day on the following Friday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Advanced youth writing will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. the fourth Thursday of the month through october. Students will have time to practice in class, and if they don’t finish they can choose to complete the assignment at home or not. Homework is optional.

“My goal is to get students excited about expanding

their writing skills beyond character, plot, and setting using advanced techniques to deepen their stories,” Engle said. “The class will be very fun and interactive, encouraging kids to write about what they love and to get outside of their comfort zones. Students must have substantial writing experience.”

Elements covered that will transform writers’ stories into potential novels include: Plotting Coincidence; Forcing Change; Motivation & lies; Tension, Tell, Don’t Show, Calm Before Storms,

Seeing the Story god, and World Building.

Engle will also cover a written, tested seven-step process for editing one’s own manuscripts by revising, reading aloud and playing back recorded clips before submitting to beta readers for final stage revisions; how to incorporate techniques that will deepen the reality of the story world and the real life existence of make-believe characters using characters in literature as examples; and understanding the proper formatting and purpose of a query letter, how to

construct one and how to submit to agents and editors.

Why does an animal have a tail? Evidently, this appendage provides skills for survival and quality of life. A tail is primarily displayed in a vertebrate. however, an invertebrate, such as a snail or scorpion, projects a quasi tail.

Generally, the tail

maintains balance; for example, a squirrel’s tail helps it scurry up and down a tree. Moreover, the flying squirrel can handle its tail as a rudder, allowing a change of direction in

mid-air.The prehensile (able to

grasp) tail of the opossum enables it to seize a tree branch. It also serves as a fifth limb — the female loops her tail to gather nesting material. This animal is often depicted hanging from a branch by its tail; in fact, only

the young are light enough to dangle briefly. Another creature, the harvest mouse, uses its prehensile tail for balance to climb a stalk while feeding on the grain. And it can be stated that a snake has a prehensile tail — or prehensile body.

Warnings and defenses are issued by tails. The white-tailed deer alerts its own by flashing the white underside of its short, erect tail (a scut) while fleeing. Caution is issued by the rattlesnake’s rattling organ at the end of the tail; this rattle is made from keratin — also found in fingernails, hooves, and horns. Some creatures defend with their tails: the scorpion projects venom,

and the alligator delivers a powerful swing.

To fly, a bird’s tail functions as a rudder. The tail spreads to increase the surface and get more lift. To change direction, the tail twists. To terminate flight, the tail turns downward and serves as a brake. Infrequently, damaged tail feathers might prevent flight; fortunately, they do grow back. A bird also uses its tail for perching or bracing against a tree, like the woodpecker. And how about the spectacular mating display of the fully-spread turkey tail?

A few more tales about tails. The lizard encourages a predator to grab its tail, then casts it off to escape; customarily, the tail grows back, and it is darker. The fox wraps itself with its bushy tail to keep warm. The fish navigates by swaying its tail from side to side. The beaver often utilizes its large, flat tail as a rudder for swimming, a prop for standing and a storage place for essential winter fat.

Why does a human not have a tail? Indeed, an embryo has a tail which is absorbed by its growing body. In rare cases, tail-like structures appear at birth. Actually, a human has the remnant of a tail — the internal tailbone which lends support to the body when sitting. VV

February is the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is observed not only in the united States, but also in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. The tradition of exchanging cards, chocolate, gifts and flowers is very popular.

According to the Greeting Card Association, Valentine’s Day is the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. That makes it really important to try to make this wonderful holiday celebration a little bit more

Earth-friendly and get creative in terms of what is exchanged without losing focus of what the celebration is really about: a demonstration of friendship and love.

Small steps toward making Valentine’s Day a little gentler on our Earth may include purchasing cards made from recycled paper, making your own cards and notes from what we already have at home (as shown at wikihow.com/Make-a-Recycled-heart-Valentine%27s-Day-Card), giving flowers from your garden, buying gifts from local businesses and performing meaningful gestures.

The last one is the most important of all because gestures and attitude really show where our heart

is. If someone (or something) is really important to us, we will do everything to protect them and preserve the relationship we have with them.

If you think about it, it is valid to say that the same applies to our planet, our Earth.

our relationship with the Earth goes beyond affection. We depend on a healthy planet to lead healthy lives. our existence relies on it. And if we want to do something, every small, everyday gesture truly helps the planet.

From applying less fertilizer on your lawn and planting native Florida gardens to bringing your reusable bags when you go shopping; from voting to make changes in legislation to better protect the environment to donating unwanted items instead of

putting them on the curb; from bringing recyclable items to dispose at home to dropping off your used corks at River Rocks (Rockledge) or Total Wines & More (Viera) to be used in projects — everything counts.

said, “It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little — do what you can.” Whatever that may be, find the best way you can positively contribute and that will make an impact. After all, “Humans are an environmental force that impacts Earth’s ecosystems” (Environmental Science for a Changing World) and we do need that force to be positive, to be constructive.

Because the stories of the origin of Valentine’s Day “all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and —most importantly — romantic

figure,” February became the month we demonstrate our love toward others who are important to us. The Earth should be important to all of us, so this month, why not vow to be Earth’s Valentine? VV

Camp North Star scheduled for

February


North Star, a children’s grief support group program, will conduct Camp North Star from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 28 at 1250-B Grumman Place in Titusville.

Camp North Star is provided free of charge by hospice of St. Francis.

The purpose of Camp North Star is to offer support to grieving children and their families after the death of a loved one. The camp offers a safe place for campers, ages 6 to 13, to explore feelings and to share experiences with others of similar ages, while providing a foundation for growth through the grieving process.

The camp is staffed by professionals and trained volunteers. Camp activities include creative learning and therapeutic crafts, as well as small group sessions to encourage campers to share memories and learn healthy coping skills.

The camp experience closes with a memorial ceremony, which family members are encouraged to attend.

Friends for Animals Sanctuary, Inc. (FFAS) recently closed on a 17.6-acre tract in Cocoa to build a no-kill, no-cage domestic animal sanctuary for Brevard County’s animals.

Katherine Johnson, FFAS founder, said the sanctuary will end unnecessary killing of adoptable animals and will serve as a safe haven for abused or neglected animals.

“We waited three years to have this land rezoned and now we can go forward to help the animals,” Johnson said. “We’ll work with the other animal shelters, and with Sheriff Ivey, to place dogs, cats, horses, cows, donkeys, even bunnies that need a home.”

The sanctuary is precisely that — a natural, safe place for domestic animals to live. They will be spayed or neutered and most will be offered to foster and forever homes. The animals will live in large state-of-the-art homes with fenced yards while they rehabilitate and recover from the trauma that

necessitates the nonprofit refuge.

An on-site trainer will certify each dog is a Canine Good Citizen before it is fostered or adopted out, which will reduce the number of animals returning.

“Without training, new owners are often overwhelmed with what they think is their newly adopted dog’s misbehavior, and they return the poor things to the shelters,” Johnson said. “The dogs aren’t bad but they have never been trained to

understand how to behave in a loving home.”

Although owners will not be allowed to surrender their pets, those animals that are not adopted will live out their natural lives at the sanctuary.

FFAS has established a thrift store at 5000 N. Wickham Road and is always looking for volunteers and donations.

Museum expo art attraction a (pre)historical firstBy Linda Wiggins

Original Highwaymen artist R.L. Lewis is used to painting historical visages of Florida landscape, but this is the first time he’ll be painting pre-history.

At the Friday, March 13 Senior Life Forever Young Senior Expo at the Brevard Museum of Science & Natural History, Lewis will paint a landscape reflecting life in a Windover village. The museum is the world’s showcase for the dig discovered in the 1980s at a construction site in Titusville. Workers sparked a find that totaled 168 villagers perfectly preserved in a peat bog for more than 7,000 years, brain tissue intact. It changed the world view of man’s early existence and DNA collected helped write a new page in recorded history of human migration in Florida.

“My father has been asked to paint cracker horses and cows, but I have to say this will definitely be the most historic Florida setting,” said Robert Lewis III, R.L. Lewis’ manager and promoter of his father’s works. The created artwork will be sold at the end of the expo to benefit the museum. Other Highwaymen paintings, prints and mementos will be available for purchase throughout the day.

The Forever Young expo takes place during Florida Archaeology Month, when sites like the Brevard Museum put on special museum exhibits, tours of archaeological sites, films, lectures and demonstrations, and even special archeological digs.

“It’s an exciting time for the museum, the very best time to show it off,” said Bruce Piatek, director of the Brevard Museum and also an archaeologist. The museum is managed by the Florida Historical Society, so Piatek wears two hats, the other as head of the society’s Archaeological Institute, housed at the museum.

The museum is sponsoring the Forever Young expo with free museum entry for attendees 55 and over. Guests 54 and younger pay the regular admission price of $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 4 to 12.

There will be live music and other entertainment, games, exhibits, health information, refreshments and lunch available for purchase.

The selection of the site for the expo was generated by input from Senior Life readers.

“Our readers tell us that history is very important to them and very interesting to them,” said Jill Blue-Gaines, CEO of expo producer Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes Senior Life and the annual Boomer Guide, Viera Voice, Viera MD and the Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide.

“When we plan an expo, it’s always a destination location that people tell us they love going to or have been meaning to visit, and that way we can all have fun together doing what we love.”

“All my life people have asked me if I’m a model because I’m tall and slender, and I’ve always wanted to be a model,” Jones said. “But I never had the courage to step out on my dreams until I became a Boomer model. It’s been really exciting.”
