Students in Susan West’s art class at Viera High get to work on a number of interesting pieces throughout the course of the school year.
This one came in a size 9.West’s class took part in the Vans Custom Culture art
competition, which comes with a grand prize of $50,000 for the art program of the winning school. The shoe designs were submitted April 5 and on April 22, Viera found out if it had made it to the top 50 where an online nationwide vote was held to determine the five finalists.
“It’s kind of cool,” Viera student Marcelino Allen-George said of the contest. “It’s like being a fashion designer.”
Each of West’s students came up with their own shoe design and then voted on their top choice for the four required categories.
Allen-George, Jasmine Dulaney, Kayleigh Jensen and Amber English all had their designs selected.

Viera High School students in the band Oceans may not be household names yet, but, considering a strong start and growing fan base, who knows what the future may bring.
For now, Mick Grocholl, 18, and Joey Molnar, both on guitar, and drummer Jon Schwerdtfeger, just want people to get a chance to hear their music, both covers and original.
“Our goal right now is to get a place where we can play every week, maybe a restaurant, so that our friends can come hear us play,’’ Grocholl said.
Local band Oceans hopes to hit it big
ViERA VoiCE George WhiteViera High School students in Oceans include, from left, Mick Grocholl, Joey Molnar on drums and Jon Schwerdtfeger.
Now in the process of “gig hunting” for venues, the band also keeps adding covers, or copies or existing songs, and writing new songs. Many
“I try to watch the reaction of the audience to pick the next song to play.

The Eagles.’’of their tunes are rousing, like those from the band Mumford and Sons, with others showing a more melodic side. Almost all feature strong harmonies between Molnar and Grocholl, who seem to share front man duties.
“I try to watch the reaction of the audience to pick the next song to play. If it’s an older crowd, we play something from The Eagles,’’ Grocholl said.
The origin of Oceans goes back to a seventh-grade friendship between Molnar, who also plays guitar, and Schwerdtfeger. Their debut as an unnamed duet was as a warm-up band at Florida Discount Music in Melbourne.
Grocholl, now a senior, moved to Viera during 10th grade from Gulf Shores, Ala., where he had been performing for many years. He saw a video of the duet on Facebook and asked if he could jam with the pair.
Molnar said he was surprised how easy he made the transition from guitar player to drummer.
“I had never done it but I picked up some sticks and started right up. I play electric drums because they are easy to turn down if you need to play softer,’’ he said.
Using a name found in a biology textbook during a brainstorming session, Oceans has only been playing out since August, starting by playing during breaks of the established local band Delgado.
“It was amazing. We had girls coming up to the front and dancing. We were only supposed to play a couple of songs each break, but we played much more,’’ Grocholl said.
The band is on the same page musically and has some time before Grocholl, a senior, leaves for the University of Tampa, where he earned a scholarship to study music.
“We plan on keeping the band together after that. It’s only two and half hours away,’’ he said. VV

The community has always rallied to events to raise funds to help finance programs for Devereux Florida, the nonprofit residential facility for students with emotional, behavioral and developmental disabilities.
Daryl Grindle and Kylee Handa, Hawk Service Learning students at Viera High School, are raising funds for another exciting facet of Devereux –its prom. They want to rent tuxedos for 10 students.
Hawk Service Learning is a required class that focuses on community support and volunteer work.
Teacher Heather James said, “To my knowledge, we are the only school in the county with a semester-long course. Our administrators feel this course is a great way to get the freshman civically involved early, in hopes they will continue through the next three years. It is also a great head start for getting those volunteer hours for Bright Futures.”
Ninth grader Layne Miller said the class is, “a method of teaching and learning where engaging students in hands-on service can positively affect the community all while the students gain valuable knowledge and skills”, Miller said.
Patty Hurst, donor relations manager at Devereux, said another group of students donated more than 40 prom dresses.
“Tuxedo rentals skyrocketed this year,” Hurst said, “and we are frantically trying to cover the additional costs so they can all enjoy their prom. I love the connection of children raising support for other children.”
Grindle said he is surprised at how the community has climbed aboard.
Our goal is to get 10 tuxedos rented out for Devereux, which comes out to $700.”
Hurst said that in April, Viera Means Business raised more than $1,000 toward the cost of the prom and future programming.
“Please keep in mind, these students are working hard
to step outside their comfort zones to help the community,” James said. “Most are only 14 or 15 and taking on adult tasks. They can use the continued support from people in our community.” They don’t just need your help financially, but also just a pat on the back to say, ‘good job,’ would go a long way.”
Hawk Service Learning is looking for community partners or organizations with specific needs.
“The class is not about the students just volunteering. It’s about them finding a need in the community and then finding a way to fill that need,” James said.
Another Hawk Service Learning student is collecting art supplies for Devereux, and others are working with the Haven for Children, Community of Hope and Ronald McDonald charities. Last semester, students built a butterfly garden on campus for the VPK program, raised money and purchased turf mats for the Wildlife Hospital in Melbourne, raised funds for local animal shelters and one
student taught her 6-year-old blind neighbor to tap dance because he could not take lessons elsewhere.
For more information or to highlight a community need,
visit hawkservicelearning.com. For more information about Devereux or to donate, call 321-632-1770. VV

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office West Precinct General Crimes Unit is attempting to identify the suspect(s) responsible for unoccupied residential burglaries in the Suntree area and the armed robbery of a resident who returned home during a home invasion.
One suspect, who held a gun to the head of a female resident who returned home to surprise the thief, was described as a black male with short black hair, wearing all black clothing, carrying an orange backpack. On the same date, a subject matching that description was seen on foot in two other subdivisions in the area.
Since March 20, there have been approximately 10 daytime burglaries in the Suntree/Viera area between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Entry was made into residences in the same manner, by breaking the rear glass doors. The suspect is able to enter through the opening in the broken glass without actually opening the door, avoiding security alarm activation.
During the time period
of the burglaries, several residents in the area called the sheriff’s office to report a suspicious male knocking on their front door and offering to provide them with lawn services. This individual left the area after each declined and he was witnessed to be operating a smaller white or tan colored unknown make sedan.
This individual is described as a stocky black male,
approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall with gold teeth, wearing a denim-type shirt, dark pants and dark colored baseball cap. This individual matches the description of a suspect responsible for burglaries in Port Orange the week before.
Agents are encouraging residents to get to know their neighbors and familiarize themselves with the daily activities occurring in their neighborhoods. Please report any crimes or suspicious activity to law enforcement as soon as possible.
Anyone with information concerning the identification of this suspect is asked to call the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office West General Crimes Unit at 321-617-7306 or CRIMELINE at 1-800-TIPS (8477). All calls to CRIMELINE are confidential, and callers can remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. VV

· Always be AWARE of what is going on around you
· Always keep doors locked, even when at home
· Install good quality deadbolt locks (1 to 1 ½” throw) on all external doors
· Install auxiliary locks on sliding doors and windows
· LOCK your vehicles. Garage door openers left inside can give immediate access to your home
· Be sure to remove newspapers, etc., from your driveway, these could indicate you are away
· Lights left on outside could indicate you are away; use timers or turn off during the day
· Never ignore the door if someone knocks or rings the bell; you could find yourself in a bad situation if they think the house is unoccupied
· Keep records of all your valuables. The list should include serial number, make, model, when purchased and purchase price. Take photographs or videos of your jewelry and other items in your home. Engrave your driver’s license number on your property, if possible. Include the state, for example: FL 111 2345 5311
· Heavy items, such as cement blocks, bricks, cement sprinkler guards, etc., left around the home can be used to break glass to enter your home
· Security film on windows could make it more difficult for entry to be made through windows/sliding doors
· Consider an alarm system; know how to use it (prevent false alarm calls) and have it monitored. Post signs and stickers showing you have an alarm system
· Get to know your neighbors and share information
· Report all suspicious situations or persons immediately to the Sheriff’s Office. Call 9-1-1 or the non-emergency number, 321-633-7162.
· Schedule a Security Survey with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. This survey will check the interior and exterior to identify potential security problems and recommend solutions. These surveys are CONFIDENTIAL and FREE.
· Start a Neighborhood Watch group in you neighborhood. This self-help effort centers around neighbors and law enforcement personnel working together to increase community awareness and reduce crime

If fifth-grader Gavin Brooks had passed away on his death bed as a toddler, his parents would be childless and without a beloved family dog. His brother, his sister and Buster aside, a nameless youth would have hung lifeless in his mother’s arms.
His family was on a cruise vacation to a Nassau, Bahamas beach on Jan. 26 when he heard the screams of a drowning boy. Unaware of the drama unfolding, the victim’s mother was earnestly reading a book on shore.
Gavin raced far out into the rough surf and duck-dived through waves to grab the boy, who was being sucked out on a riptide, and dragged him back to shore.
The victim was blue but coughed up and vomited sea water to take a breath of life, and now owes that life to his rescuer.
Due to the illness that weakened his heart, Gavin first glanced at his father to ask for permission with his eyes. He had already bent his knees, dug his heels in the sand and leaned forward.
“OK, go!” shouted Casey Brooks. “He knew I’d be concerned about his heart condition, but I trusted in him that it was the right thing to do.”
Gavin’s parents were on hand for an award of valor personally presented to Gavin by Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey and Port Canaveral Police Chief Joe Hellebrand in front of his class on April 4.
Gavin had Kawasaki syndrome, an autoimmune disease where the medium-sized blood vessels throughout the body become inflamed. It is largely seen in children younger than 5 years of age. It affects many organ systems, mainly those including the blood vessels, skin, mucous membranes and lymph nodes. In rare instances, as with Gavin, the most serious effect is on the heart, where it can cause a fatal coronary artery aneurysm in an untreated child.
Gavin lay in his bed two days from death after several misdiagnoses, according to his mother, Ellen Brooks, who prayed and cried at his bedside. A physician finally noticed his bright red “strawberry” tongue, swollen neck, reddened skin and bruised hands and feet and treated the disease just before
Gavin’s heart began to shut down.“We know he was spared for a purpose,” Ellen
Brooks said.Despite his illness, Gavin went on to become an
avid surfer. His strength in the water allowed him at separate times to save his brother, Ayden, 9, and his sister, Gabriella, 6, from drowning, as well as his four-legged best pal.
Gavin not only risked own his life to save a stranger — drowning victims can panic and pull down a would-be rescuer until they both perish — but he is quietly humble about it as well, according to Sheriff Ivey.
“How many of you in this room knew about Gavin’s
experience before today?” Ivey asked the students of teacher Shannon Daly’s class.
Not one of them raised a hand. The normally gregarious Gavin stood before the class and received the commendation plaques and gifts from the heads of law enforcement without saying a word.
Afterward, Ivey and Hellebrand walked outside the classroom with Gavin so he could address awaiting media representatives. They noticed a class project with students’ photos and what they want to be when they grow up. Under Gavin’s photo read, “SWAT Team.”
Ivey smiled. “We’re beginning the recruiting process as of today.” VV
ViERA VoiCE Linda WigginsAfter being shocked into thinking he was in trouble when Manatee Elementary School Principal Carl Brown brought law enforcement to his class, Gavin Brooks instead received commendations of valor for saving a life, from Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey and Port Canaveral Police Chief Joe Hellebrand.

When the first shovel of dirt is turned for the future Health Activity and Education Center at the Devereux campus in Viera, it will mark 25 years that Patty Hurst has been asking people to put their money where their mouth is to help children with challenges.
“Patty is one of the most passionate people I have ever had the pleasure to work with at Devereux,” said her boss, Dan Samuels, development director for Devereux Florida. Locally, the agency provides a home and school for children with behavioral issues and also coordinates foster care and any needed behavioral health services across Brevard.
“She really gets ingrained in our mission and makes it her personal mission with anyone she comes across, and that is why Devereux is so well supported in Brevard,” Samuels added.
Current and potential Devereux investors will get a chance to have fun with
Hurst at the second annual Devereux Tea Time Garden Party at Florida Institute of Technology’s Hartley Room and Botanical Gardens Saturday, May 18. Proceeds will go toward construction of the health center, which breaks ground in June.
A fashion event showcasing clothing and accessories from Dillard’s will include a fancy hat contest, door prizes, light refreshments and sweet treats. A glass of champagne
will be offered in the Florida Tech Botanical Gardens and a cash bar will be available.
“This is something fun I would be doing with my friends anyway, and having it be for such a worthy cause is a bonus,” said Hurst, whose position was recently upgraded from assistant development director to donor relations manager.
The health center will replace a dilapidated gym with a concrete floor and no air conditioning that is unusable half the year in hot weather. The new facility will have space for all children and staff to congregate, will be air conditioned and have a kitchen, bathroom facilities, a stage, a basketball court and bleachers.
Much has changed over the past quarter-century, both at Devereux and in Brevard, according to Hurst.
“As Brevard has grown so much, so has the need to take care of our community’s most innocent children and see that their future is as bright as possible,” Hurst said.

VIERA VOICE Rosemary H. Lynn Kiara Loper is ready to start rehearsing for her singing role in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
By RoSEmARy H. Lynn
Kiara Loper is the kind of teenager every parent hopes to have. She is smart, funny, industrious and fond of her younger brothers, Chase and Casey.
She writes poetry and songs that she sings a cappella. A student at Kennedy Middle School, she will be graduating to Rockledge High next fall and plans to continue her musical activities in chorus and possibly stage performances.
Loper is one of the young singers to perform in the upcoming “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” which will be held at the Cocoa Village Playhouse from June 14 through June 16. This will be her first professional performance, but she hopes to do more. She has performed in many school plays and musicals including
“Snow White.” The only time she slipped
into typical teenage-girl mode was when she declared her
love for Justin Bieber. “I’m his biggest fan,” she said.Otherwise, she seems wise
beyond her years. She bakes cookies to take to nursing homes and spends time with anyone who doesn’t have regular visitors.
“Volunteering is so important to me,” she said. “I just love older people. They have given us so much. It’s time to give back to them.”
An avid volleyball player at Kennedy, she hopes to continue to play in high school. Also, she is a member of Nomad Community Church where she often sings in the choir and participates in volunteer activities. In addition, she helps her mother with her local cleaning business.

Aaron Collins doesn’t fit the mold of traditional symphony orchestra maestros, and not just because he is a mere 27 years old. The Cocoa Beach native looks like he would be more at home on a surfboard than tap, tap tapping on a
music stand to signal the start of a sonata.
“Within the profound realm of classical music, conductors are some of the most caricatured personages of the lot,” reads the website for the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, which Collins founded in 2009.
“The mere mention of them conjures images of gloweringly imperious white-maned figures gesticulating wildly from their symbolically heightened perches.”
Collins is planting seeds for more nonconformists with his production for both children and the child within called “Lemony Snickets: the Composer is Dead,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Scott Performing Arts Center on the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy’s Suntree campus.
Based on the popular series of children’s books, the whodunit plot involves the murder of a conventional composer by a member of an orchestra to be discovered by the show’s end.
“Traditional orchestras are failing at recruiting replacement patrons of the arts who are dying off,” said Collins, pulling no punches. “They are shutting down all over the country.”
In order for symphonic performance to thrive with the times, it must be innovative, diverse in its musical forms, include many popular themes and be accessible to — horrors! — the masses, according to Collins, who puts on more than 150 performances a year, versus around 50 for traditional symphonies.
SCSO charges little to at times nothing to tour, unlike Brevard Symphony Orchestra, which charges $22,400 to play anywhere but its own
venue. SCSO’s players are often volunteers, and all the staff are volunteers who stand behind Collins’ vision to reach out to all. BSO players earn industry scale.
The cost for the May 11 performance is $20 for adults, but children 18 and younger are always admitted free. Through the Symphony for Everyone program, individuals and families experiencing hard times can name their own price to attend. One quarter of attendees are experiencing live classical music for the first time, according to the SCSO box office.
Collins swears he is not opposed to traditional symphony, but rather he is leading a movement to save it. The prolific composer is on the board of directors of BSO
affiliate Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Vivace Society, which funds BSO and other traditional musical arts.
He puts his money where his passion is, sinking between $50,000 to $70,000 of his own funds into the SCSO mission to date and forgoing a salary despite rapid growth.
He frequently is recognized for his giving and leadership, most recently being the youngest winner of the “4 under 40” award presented by LEAD Brevard and one of Space Coast Business’ Most Admired People, described as “the next big thing,” “a man on fire,” and “an absolute powerhouse”.
For tickets or more information, go to spacecoastsymphony.org. VV
Music for the masses is the future for symphony orchestra, says nonconformist

It’s been a heck of a decade for Robert Lamb of Viera, not the least of which was buying a home here exactly 10 years ago.
He collected a doctorate degree in his profession of music arts in 2006, a year earlier becoming a full professor at Brevard Community College. Soon after, he received a promotion to head of the Department of Performing and Visual Arts. He has produced touring shows all over the world.
But perhaps the biggest change is not what was added to him, but what was taken away: 210 pounds, thanks to gastric bypass surgery the summer of 2006. He works out regularly with a trainer who comes to his house ― that way he can’t skip out ― and has changed his eating habits.
“I can tell you it has made a big difference in flying on an airplane,” said the avid traveler. “I could always recognize the terror in
someone’s eyes as they watched this 400-pound guy coming down the aisle, thinking, “I hope that guy’s not sitting next to me!’”
Humor comes easy to the North Carolina native. As the choir director of the traditional service at Suntree
United Methodist Church, he leaves congregation members in stitches. He doesn’t mind telling one on himself as long as it gets laughs. Not only can he take it, but he can dish it out. His favorite mutual target is SUMC visitation Pastor Hoyt
Byrum. “Maybe we ought to sell
tickets for his stand-up act,” Byrum said, adding a few one-liners that don’t translate well in print. “That and $5 and we could finally afford coffee at Starbucks.”
The comic delivery
extends to the musical stage. Lamb is putting together a huge performance of Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” at the King Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11. He is the director and conductor of the 100-voice Brevard Community Chorus, the Brevard Chorale and the Brevard Community College Concert Choir.
Joining those groups on stage will be the Brevard Children’s Chorus, instrumentalists from the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and eight professional soloists.
“We want everyone to come for the music,” Lamb said, “but if the audience also has a few laughs, well, that won’t hurt my feelings one bit.”
Tickets to the show are $20 general admission, $15 for seniors and active military, and $5 at the box office for students who show valid student ID. To purchase tickets or for more information, go to brevardcommunitychorus.org. VV
Less is more for community conductor

HOLY TrINITY BAseBALLThe end of a tough season for the shorthanded Tigers came
on April 18 for the Tigers, who lost to Satellite to fall to 1-16 … Coach Chuck Goldfarb said the team would miss seniors Conner Frost and Johnny Gomez … Jacquel Perry was the team’s leading hitter, batting around .300 … The Tigers had 11 players, seven of which were seventh, eighth or ninth graders … Holy Trinity’s lone win came March 2 against St. Edward’s.
VIerA HIGH BAseBALLThe Hawks earned the No. 1 seed for the district playoffs
and were preparing for the championship game on April 26 at New Smyrna Beach High. A district title would be the first in school history for Viera … Kyle Hintz was leading the team in hitting at .345, followed by Reid Neal (.324), David McKay (.323) and Grant Willcoxon (.321) … On the mound, Willcoxon was 6-2, while McKay was 5-2 and Brandon Goff was 4-1.
HOLY TrINITY BOYs LACrOsseAfter defeating Merritt Island 12-10 in the district
semifinals, the Tigers dropped the title game to MCC 8-7 … Trey Ville had three goals in the win against Merritt Island. Victor Rahner, Charles Barger and Zach Funk all had two goals. Other scorers included Ed Leary, Micah Morgan and Noah Benjamin … While the Tigers certainly didn’t go as far as they hoped, they still had a strong season on which they can build for the future.
VIerA HIGH BOYs LACrOsseThe Hawks got off to a smoking start this season, but
unfortunately for Viera, it ended in the opening round of district play when MCC posted a 17-7 win … Viera finished with an 11-4 mark … Zach Zippi had a goal and three assists in the MCC loss. Austin Wear and Ryan Hulmes each had two goals. Gio Brunelle and Alex Lenk scored the other goals for Viera, while goalie Tommy Sieler had 11 saves.
HOLY TrINITY sOFTBALLThe Tigers qualified for the Class 3A regional playoffs,
but lost a chance to win the district championship when John Carroll rallied for a 15-12 victory. Talia Douglass had a big game with two triples for Holy Trinity, which fell to 9-11. Casey Cohen and Paige Golson each had a double … The Tigers beat MCC 5-3 to reach that district title game. Douglass had another triple, while Ally Neutze doubled. Pitcher Allison Roche got the victory.
VIerA HIGH sOFTBALLThe Hawks dominated much of the regular season and
were awaiting an April 19 game against University for the district championship. Viera (21-4) suffered a 7-5 loss to Astronaut a week earlier despite getting a double and three-run home run from Lauren Palombi. Kiana East and Ana Breeden also doubled in that contest … Prior to that, the Hawks won an eight-inning 1-0 thriller over Cocoa Beach. Breeden got the win in that game, while Palombi tripled.
HOLY TrINITY BOYs TeNNIsA run to the Class 1A regional finals showed just how
strong a season the Tigers had. Egan Kattenberg won his No. 3 singles match, but Holy Trinity would eventually fall to Benjamin 4-1 to finish the season at 13-3 … Other players who had a strong season for the Tigers included Chris Suchoski, Matt Allison, Tanner Crouch, Nick Keiter and doubles specialist Spencer Sperando … Earlier, Holy Trinity captured the Class 1A, District 11 championship.
HOLY TrINITY GIrLs TeNNIsThe young Tigers finished sixth at the Class 1A, District 11
tournament … Megan Bernier reached the district finals at No. 3 singles … Other top players for the Tigers this season included Savannah Kutryb, Hannah Shuman, Ravenel Rudd and Katie Merlin … Considering Kutryb is just an eighth grader and Rudd and Merlin are only sophmores, the future looks bright for coach Lorie Heinlin’s team as players continue to gain experience and improve their games.

There was a little bit of a familial theme to spring signing day at Viera High School, but for different reasons.
Grant Willcoxon signed to play baseball at Florida Tech in part because he wanted to make it easy for his family to come watch him play.
Jackie Stengel, meanwhile, signed to play soccer at North Carolina State, which has already touched off a little friendly trash talking with her older sister, Katie, who stars for Wake Forest.
The two Atlantic Coast Conference teams are set to meet for the first time on Halloween in Raleigh.

“It’s exciting,” Jackie said. “We’ll see what happens.”
The Florida Class 4A Player of the Year in 2013,
Stengel scored 36 goals this past season and had 112 goals and 47 assists in her career. She was rated the No. 2 player in Florida by Top Drawer and the No. 33 player nationally at the forward position.
Though she had originally pledged to sign with Florida, Stengel had a change of heart and decided to sign with the Wolfpack and first-year coach Tim Santoro, who is a former Wake Forest assistant.
Stengel is looking to help turn the North Carolina State program around.
“They’re not very strong right now, but they’re getting there,” she said. “(I want to help) turn the program around and make a name for myself and not just go to Florida because it’s a big-name school.”
Stengel plans to major in engineering, though she is also considering something with math.
Willcoxon, meanwhile, had a 5-2 record for the Hawks
(17-7), who were gunning for their first-ever district championship.
The pitcher chose Florida Tech over offers from Daytona State College and
Florida Southern.“I picked Florida Tech
because it’s close here to my family,” he said. “I did it for their great academic institution, and if you check their record, they’re on the rise this year. They’re really starting to get good.”
He plans to major in international business with plans to get a master’s degree in sports business management.
Willcoxon played at Melbourne High for two years before transferring to Viera.
“I had a great time at Melbourne, but these were the kids I grew up playing baseball with,” he said. “They were my best friends (and) it was really nice reuniting with them and being able to spend a lot of time with them. It’s been a great experience.” VV

As they put pen to paper and signed their national letters of intent, Holy Trinity seniors Alex Brown, Tristan Kattenberg, Brianna Wahy, Will Gibson and Johnny Gomez added to what has been an amazing year for Holy Trinity athletics.
The five athletes who signed this spring brought the number of Tigers who have signed athletic scholarships this school year to 10. In fact, 68 have signed in the past five years.
While they all have their unique stories, one that clearly stands out is Gomez, who signed to play men’s volleyball at Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte, N.C.
Holy Trinity may offer a lot of sports, but boys volleyball isn’t one of them. Instead, he played club ball for the Tampa Bay Invaders.
“I traveled three hours for practice to Tampa probably once or twice a month,” Gomez said. “I’ve been playing with them since I was 13.”
The libero picked up the love of the game from his mother (a local volleyball coach in her own right) and
has been playing for eight years. He plans to major in criminal justice.
Brown, the 2012 Class 1A boys state champion and Runner of the Year, said he made the decision to attend Columbia in March. The first Holy Trinity runner to go to six
state meets, he plans to major in something involving math.
Kattenberg, meanwhile, will be running cross country and track at George Mason University in the fall. He chose the school because of its solid coaching staff, and its excellent economics program.
Gibson will get a chance to play basketball in front of friends and family at Brevard Community College, which he chose for several different reasons.
“The style of play resembles the style here at Holy Trinity,” he said. “They have great coaches. Their success rate of getting players to the next level —
D-I colleges — is very high every year. I think it’s a perfect fit.”
He eventually plans to major in sports business.
Wahy, who wants to be a physical therapist, will study pre-med at Mercer University, where she will run cross country and track. Tigers coach Doug Butler got a little emotional when introducing Wahy, whom he has coached since the sixth grade.
“I’ve been really close to him for the past six years,” Wahy said. “He’s become like a father figure to me. We don’t just share running. It’s like a fatherly bond.” VV

Dominic Carrillo has had a long-standing dream of being selected to the U.S. national soccer team, or to play professionally.
That’s why what happened to the Viera High School sophomore earlier this year is so exciting, and encouraging. He was invited to the U15/U16 2013 Olympic Development Program Super Y National Camp at the IMG Academy in Bradenton this past February.
“It was a really good experience,” Carrillo said. “They treated us like professionals, and I really liked that.”
The 16-year-old attacking center midfielder not only plays for the Hawks, but he is also a member of the Space Coast United U17 Elite team and also plays in the Super Y League for Orlando City.
After training and playing games for three days at the ODP camp, Carrillo was one of 24 players chosen for the Select team, which meant a chance to play in front of the ODP staff as well as scouts for the U.S. boys national team.
Taking part in the camp has only further motivated Carrillo to continue pursuing his dream
“Just seeing all the talent, and the coaches there were good ... it makes me want it even more,” Carrillo said. “It was a great experience.”VV

annual Faculty Softball GameBy CARL KotALA
Thousands of elementary school-aged children will be scrambling around Space Coast Stadium on May 17, looking to have their baseball cards autographed.
But they won’t be looking for Brevard County Manatees players … and the Washington Nationals left town a couple of months ago.
On this night, the children will be watching and rooting for a different kind of hero — their teachers.
The 10th annual Faculty Softball Game will take place May 17 with a 6 p.m. game matching the staffs from Quest Elementary against Ralph Williams Elementary. The 7:15 contest pits Manatee Elementary against the newcomer to this popular event, Golfview Elementary.
For the first time in the game’s history, it will not be played on the last day of school. The thinking is that by holding it on a Friday, there is a chance to draw a bigger crowd than on the actual last day of school, which falls on Wednesday, May 22.
The game typically draws 3,000 or more people.
“It’s a community event,” said Manatee sixth grade teacher and event coordinator Todd Zgonc.
“The energy out there is amazing, and the atmosphere … obviously, with that many kids
in the stands, it’s loud. When I was out there playing in the field, and they’re cheering, you can’t hear a guy 30 yards away calling for the ball.”
Admission to the game is $2 in advance, and $3 at the gate. Parking is free and the concession stands will be open.
In addition to game programs, there will be T-shirts and baseball cards with pictures of all the players.
“I’m really into baseball cards and I’ve always wanted to do them with our game,” Zgonc said. “About five years ago, we finally did it. … I’m actually going to make about 8,000 cards to sell to the kids, and to give some away.
“The kids get crazy into it. They all go around, trying to get autographs.”
Baseball cards are just another evolution in the event, which began 10 years ago with Manatee facing Suntree in the inaugural contest. The following year, Quest and Ralph Williams joined the party and the game has continued to grow in popularity throughout the local community.
While the games are meant to entertain, Zgonc said they can be quite competitive.
“It’s not like a bunch of 60-year-olds running around pulling hamstrings and breaking hips,” he joked. “It’s fun and it’s competitive.” VV

Golfers of every level have an opportunity to experience the greens at Indian River Colony Club (IRCC) in Viera and support a worthy cause.
The second annual FORE!! for the Poor Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 with proceeds helping Daily Bread of Melbourne.
Daily Bread has provided a soup kitchen to feed the poor, hungry and homeless in the Melbourne area, serving more than one million meals to men, women and children in our community. The nonprofit’s thrift store on New Haven Ave. provides one-third of the revenue needed to operate and the rest comes from fundraisers such as the golf tournament.
Pam Whittington, of Daily Bread, said, “Dwight Bell, of Wings of Grace Ministry is donating the use of a helicopter for a chopper dropper event. The winner will take home $2,500. Other prizes for the tournament are clubs, rounds of golf and dinners.”
Chopper drop tickets are $20 each, or three for $50. The purchase of a $50 ticket also grants access to the social at IRCC on Friday night, May 31, which is when the balls will be dropped.
Golf is $150 per golfer and includes the Friday night social with a guest. The scramble format golf begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 1 with an awards lunch afterwards.

VIERA VOICE Darrell WoehlerTim Gallagher, award-winning author and wildlife photographer, at his book signing following his presentati on at the 2013 Viera Wetlands Nature Festi val Dinner at the Holiday Inn-Viera on Friday, April 12, 2013. With Tim is (l) Nicolett e Zahner, teaching assistant at Florida Insti tute of Technology who did a presentati on on FrogWatch USA, and Amy Reaume, conservati on coordinator for Brevard Zoo, who took patrons on a evening tour of Viera Wetlands.
e most frequently asked question I hear is simple: “How do I take better care of my pet?”
Over the next few months, I will be addressing some of these frequently asked about, and misunderstood, topics to help weed through the information and bring you what will be most helpful to you in deciding what is best for your furry family member.
is month’s discussion will be on some of the newer ea and tick and preventatives. It is probably one of the more complicated topics, but as we are coming into warmer seasons, it is also one of the most important.
ere have been many recent advances in ea and tick prevention, and therefore new products to choose from.
In Florida, we rarely see enough cold weather to keep eas and ticks at bay for long. is is why we recommend year-round ea prevention, and tick prevention for those living in areas with increased exposure.
ese areas include thick brush or wooded property, those who travel north and those who camp o en. Although these guidelines help you determine your risk, if you have any concern, prevention is always easier than treating an infestation. I can speak from personal experience on this as I had a tick infestation a few years ago and, a er treating for three months, thought it might be easier to just burn the house down than get rid of the ticks.
Two of the more recent additions to ea prevention are Comfortis and Activyl. Activyl is a once-monthly
topical ea preventative in liquid form that is applied between the shoulder blades directly on the skin. Activyl prevents eas from being able to feed, they become paralyzed and die. It also prevents ea eggs and larvae from developing, thus preventing a new cycle of eas from developing.
Activyl is available from your veterinarian for dogs and cats.
Comfortis is also a once-monthly ea preventative but is a chewable- avored tablet given by mouth. is has become a very popular product for pets who swim or are bathed frequently because you don’t have to worry about washing any of the product o and decreasing its e cacy. It can also be a good choice for those who don’t like topical products due to their “greasy” feeling. Comfortis is also available from your veterinarian for dogs, and more recently for cats.
When talking about the newer tick products, it is important to note that these tick preventatives are coupled with ea prevention. While I mentioned Activyl as a ea prevention earlier, the company has a ea and tick prevention available for dogs only. Activyl Tick for dogs is applied once monthly between the shoulder blades directly on the skin.
Frontline has also come out with a new ea and tick product called Frontline Tritak. is is also a topical ea and tick prevention applied once monthly in the same manner as Activyl.
One important di erence between the two is that Frontline Tritak has a product available for cats as well.
It is interesting to note that no tick
preventative comes in an oral form. For this reason, if you use any of these topical products, you should only use a soap-free shampoo to avoid washing o the product.
Our last product discussion will be heartworm prevention. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos, and you don’t have to live here long to understand how prevalent of a problem this can be. Even if your dog is only indoor, they will likely come into contact with a mosquito at some point and it only takes one bite to infect your pet.
Heartworm disease is expensive to treat and can be fatal if le untreated, so year-round heartworm prevention is required in Florida. e company that introduced Comfortis has combined Comfortis with Interceptor, a heartworm and internal parasite preventative, into one tablet. is tablet controls eas, heartworms, and some internal parasites for one month. Again, it has the advantage of not being washed o with frequent bathes or swimming. A disadvantage is that if you need tick protection, this product does not control ticks.
You should always talk to your veterinarian about the ea and tick and heartworm prevention that best ts you, your pet and your pets’ lifestyle. While there have been many products on the market, these newer products tend to be the ones most asked about. With your veterinarian’s help, you can avoid any infestation.

Nature Festival goes wild
The 2013 Viera Wetlands Nature Festival saw success in its irst year as a three-day event April 12 through 14.
The weekend kicked off with a dinner featuring keynote speaker Tim Gallagher, award-winning author, wildlife photographer, and magazine editor.
He spoke of this quest to photograph the world’s largest woodpecker and signed copies of his new book, “Imperial Dreams: Searching for the Long-lost Imperial Woodpecker in the Wild Sierra Madre.” He shared at the full-capacity dinner that the rare bird has been all but eradicated by intentional poisoning in its Mexican habitat.
Florida Institute of Technology student Nicolette Zahner of FrogWatch USA also spoke and later hosted tours of the wetlands, using a microphone to capture sounds emitted from frogs that sounded just like the pigs for which they named.
The weekend was coordinated by the Friends of the Viera Wetlands, a nonproit auxiliary group that raises funds for and awareness of the wetlands, while the Brevard County Department of Natural Resources provided the venue for nature expo held the Saturday of the weekend. VV

Putting advanced math skills to work — in some type of engineering — is going to be the career path for Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy senior Sean Carroll, 18, who recently was named CERTON 2013 Scholar of the Year.
Four Holy Trinity seniors planning careers in engineering visited the CERTON: Safety-Critical Engineering facility in Melbourne March 15 to interview for CERTON’s Leadership through Technology Program.
The college-bound students — Carroll (Cornell), Ryan Allison (Colgate), Rachel Motro (Clemson) and Ruby Watts (Duke) — were asked to create a presentation over the course of their visit on “What does CERTON do?”
“They basically certify other companies’ products, mostly software and some hardware. They work a lot with the aerospace industry and have these very strict guidelines. Any software that goes up in a plane has to pass this.
‘Nothing can fail’ is basically what they are determining,’’ Carroll said.
Company officials helped the students with information during question and answer sessions. The final Powerpoint presentations were shown to a group of CERTON engineers including top administrators.
For the win, Carroll was awarded $1,125 and was promised consideration for an internship following his first year in college. The other students received
scholarships of lesser amounts.
“I’m very happy. After that experience, I was telling them right then, I know I definitely know I want to be an engineer now. After talking to the engineers, and seeing their perspectives and seeing that they are like-minded to me, I feel that I will definitely fit into the engineering field. It was interesting to talk to them,’’ he said.
Carrol had worried that he also likes computer programming and could have gone into software engineering.
“I always thought electrical (engineering) because that gives me the versatility if I needed a job, I could always go into the hardware side too. I was worried how much software they (CERTON) actually deal with it. A couple of electrical engineers said, at this company, they do almost primarily software stuff. That was nice to hear that they can go that complete route with electrical engineers,’’ Carroll said. VV

Most parents teach their children not to talk to strangers. Keri Price and Mike Shannon taught little Brynna to talk to everyone from birth, and she never has stopped.
“She doesn’t know what a stranger is, which is a little scary for us, but that’s just the way she is,” said Price, who nominated the Manatee Elementary School youngster for the Viera Voice Student of the Month.
“She is the kindest child you will ever meet. You have to be careful because she gets very sensitive, because she just puts herself out to everyone and wants to help everyone,” Price said.
Perhaps she got her top-notch social skills from her years since birth spent at her parents’ business and workplace, Building Bodies Fitness Center in Rockledge and the fitness club on the second floor of the Rockledge Iceplex.
“You are naturally very social and supportive with clients in this industry,” Mike Shannon said,
“and she’s been around this environment since conception.”
The gregarious fourth grader has had a lot to overcome in her younger years, with bad allergies and asthma sometimes sidelining her and requiring surgeries. She has since become a strong, healthy little girl full of curiosity, stamina and tenacity. That goes for her schoolwork as well.
Last year, Brynna struggled with math and wanted nothing more than to avoid it. This year, she was placed in Wendy Shelden’s class. Shelden makes a game of math and all other subjects, rewarding time and effort spent, rather than the grade earned.
“I absolutely love Mrs. Shelden. Her class is so fun. We get to look at things in microscopes, we went at night to look through telescopes and saw the moon, planets and stars…” Brynna said in the midst of her trademark excited, nonstop chatting.
She not only turned her math grade around, but now it is Brynna’s favorite subject,
along with a love of science shared with her teacher. Shelden confessed that she, herself, is an enthusiastic 10 year old in an adult body,.
“I guess I saw no point in growing up as far as love for learning is concerned,” Shelden said. She added with a smile, “If it’s not fun, who wants to do it? Not even me, and I’m the teacher!”
Brynna’s enthusiasm for learning travels home from school with her. She loves to ice skate and play guitar. And chatting is not reserved for strangers, but is extended to her little sister in a big way, in a relationship where typically the older child wants not much to do with a tiresome little sibling.
“They are attached at the hip,” Price said. “We were
worried she’d get to an age where she didn’t want to be around Rylee, but that never happened. Brynna has always loved babies and made
a beeline to go play with younger kids,” Price said.
“She wants to help them and take them under her wing like a momma bird.” VV

Monica Slate and Carol Albright are the latest to launch a phenomenal teaching tool in their classroom that literally teaches itself ― or, rather, that has students teach themselves ― and each other.
The Suntree Elementary School tandem-teaching second-grade teachers allow their shared double class of students to select a key historical figure they admire,
draw a life-size picture of the character, dress as the part, and give a first-person speech to a viewer who taps a button on the back of their shoulder. The project will be done by the end of the month.
“This is a rare tool that allows us to easily use performance to help bring a child out of his or her shell without the stress of a large audience, among the many benefits it provides,” said Judith Carr, whose second-grade students recently
completed their project.Warm-blooded “wax
figures” came to life when students put on a display to rival Madame Tussaud’s. They start with their backs to the viewer, and the shoulder tap makes them turn around to give a one-on-one taste of their hero’s life and times.
“It was one of the most incredible, educational and fun projects I have ever witnessed,” said Lisa Russell, Carr’s school-room mom. Russell’s son, Ryan, was
Johnny Appleseed, compete with a pan for a hat, cut-off jean waders and a huge apple to munch.
Students learn research skills in looking up facts about their chosen character on the computer and by poring though books in the school media center. Classroom volunteer Kelly Fraser, once a second-grade student in Carr’s class, traced each student’s form on the life-size strip of butcher paper before the student drew the face and costume.
Students and their parents worked together at home to select or make costumes. The day of the presentation, parents and other family members crowded the classroom and took their turns prompting each student to spin around and give his or her 30-second presentation, memorized by heart or read from a carefully crafted script. Each then spun back around to wait motionlessly for the next prompt.
“I became blind and deaf at age 2, until I learned to communicate through my teacher, and went on to help others like me to learn to
reach out to others,” said Helen Keller, voiced by Brooke Mostert.
The project not only inspired children to practice learning skills, but also teaching talents.
“They were so excited to show off to their parents and peers, and you know they had help from home,” Carr said. “We call this the home-to-school connection, and it is incredibly important to my ability to succeed with students in the classroom, when their parents spend time at home supporting what their children are learning in school.”
Carr credits collaborating teachers for the project idea. Suntree teacher Meg Stafford learned of the idea from a teacher pen pal, and Suntree colleague Nancy Bradshaw was the first to try it at the school.
“Basically, we are always talking and sharing ideas on how to make teaching interesting, fun and effective,” Carr said. “When we come across something like this, we get as eager to try it out as the students.” VV

“I basically drew things that I think about, things I like to draw and I’m good at drawing,” said English, who represented the art category.

that kind of music famous. “A lot of (adults) that I talked to are from that
time and they like to listen to these types of music, so they all came up with the idea
I should do shoes about what they used to listen to,” Allen-George said. “It was pretty fun.”VV

Lockheed Martin managers and employees recently visited 150 sixth graders at Suntree Elementary School to infuse them with excitement and possibly reap future employees.
“Opportunities like this are key to reaching young students and inspiring them to consider a career in science, engineering and technology,” said Mark Valerio, vice president and general manager of Military Space for Lockheed Martin Space Systems.
The team visited on the eve of the March 19 launch of the second Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) Geosynchronous Earth Orbit spacecraft from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. It will bolster the nation’s ballistic missile launch detection and defense capabilities.
The defense contractor dangled the chance to see the launch from the company’s restricted area by having students write an essay on why they would want to be chosen. In a reversal of the current ratio of male-to-female majority, all six chosen students were female and included Regan Kratzer, Brianna Valverde, Lydia Howald, Asia Colman, Safina Borghetti and Nina Reddy.
“That was definitely
unusual,” said Paul Metz, a Lockheed Martin project lead in the Facility Engineering and Design organization supporting the Fleet Ballistic Missile program, the father of three students attending Suntree Elementary. The school volunteer initiated a science and engineering program in 2010 to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) interest among the students and to provide the school with additional resources.
Activities include a fun science night that features popular interactive robotics and the chance to create, decorate and launch cardboard rockets that really soar.
“STEM education is so very important to the future of our country and world,” said Suntree Principal Mecheall
Giombetti. “The partnership activities that Lockheed Martin and Suntree Elementary have implemented over the past three years, and the SBIRS Launch Presentation, represents the powerful ways in which businesses and schools can come together to inspire our young citizens.”
This emphasis on community education gets lost in the busy-ness of launching rockets, Valerio said.
“The aerospace community is made up of great engineers doing inspiring work, but we’re not always the best marketers,” Valerio said. “We need to take advantage of every opportunity to showcase the work we do and explain how it impacts lives. It’s time we get people excited about science, discovery and innovation once again.” VV

When you look at the directory of Quest Elementary School, you see Frank Caufield is listed as a sixth grade teacher, in itself a big job. He is also director of performing arts for the school.
Caufield, as a male teacher, is a rarity. He has been at Quest about five years, but has more than 21 years experience in the performing arts. His love of theater transfers to his students as they try to build esteem and confidence, both individually and as cast members helping each other.
According to other Quest staff members, Caufield takes it to a higher level, especially in dedication to the students known as Caufield’s Kids.
When others are still in bed or just thinking about getting up at 6:30 a.m., Caufield and his “kids” are already at school and on stage, rehearsing for the play, Annie, Jr.
The musical is a modified version of the play, Annie, and is licensed under Music Theater International. The play begins with Little Orphan Annie’s arrival on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage in 1933. Then, with charm and
personality, she begins the search for her parents. With her blonde hair dyed red to match the
traditional Annie character, Reagan Meyers takes on the title role.
“One of the hardest things to do is to switch from the play part to being a regular student, again.” She said.
Another key actress is Holly Yoho, who plays Mrs. Hannigan, the bitter orphanage manager. The veteran actress since the fourth-grade, said that acting is just a lot of fun.
Alan Benitez portrays Oliver Warbucks and Aubrey Lechlikner takes on the role of Lily.
Servants and orphans make up a large part of this young, 40-member cast that must memorize lines, coordinate costumes and be on stage at the right place at the right time.
Caufield’s wife, Jeannie Caufield, helps with the production, with many parents and extended family members there to lend their support, helping with costume creation, sewing and other needs.
Two performances are set for Monday, May 20. The first is at 8:30 a.m. at Quest Elementary School, and the second, at 6:30 p.m. at Viera High School.
The coordination between Quest and Viera High is in hopes of creating in cast members and other students the desire to keep participating in the theater and the performing arts in high school and beyond.

May 21 is graduation day for Quest sixth-graders. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.
Marion Bronzell, mother to 11 children, said, “I have been to many award and graduation ceremonies. Last year my daughter, Brittany, graduated from Quest and I can honestly say it was the best graduation I’ve ever been to.”
Parents email photos of their children that are set to music and played as each student steps on stage.
“Last year, it brought tears to my eyes,” Bronzell said. “Then I realized, I wasn’t the only parent that happened to.”
Academy Awards Night for the Quest Drama Club will be held at the Suntree Country Club from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 26. The evening will include dinner, dancing and an awards ceremony for the students.

Brevard’s Got Music Talent The Creative Arts Foundation of Brevard, a nonprofit
organization that promotes, assists, and furthers the development of Brevard County artists, held its fourth annual music competition on Sunday, April 14 at the Henegar Center in downtown Melbourne.
Twelve of the most talented young musicians from Brevard County competed for top honors. The contestants were musical artists aged 14 through 19 who are gifted violinists, violists, pianists, drummers, vocalists and horn players.
“Everyone, all 12 contestants, were fantastic.” said foundation member, Marshall Frank.
This year’s winner was Elizabeth Hargis, who played piano. She won a $1,000 grant from the foundation. The second-place award of $500 went to Ivan Rao, who also played piano. Melanie Richardson, another talented pianist, took home the third-place purse of $250, with Maryl Harris’ skill on the horn earning her the $125 prize and fourth place.
Auditions for Brevard’s Got Music Talent 2014 will be held in January and February. The next music competition will be in April 2014.

The owners of Suntree Internal Medicine, with major expansion plans and plenty of land for development, are about to take the lead in transforming Suntree along Wickham Road.
The rapidly growing practice at 903 Jordan Blass Drive started small in 2002 under the leadership of patriarch Dr. Abe Hardoon.
A new 20,000-square-foot building, and a separate planned diagnostic center, will serve as anchors to the as yet unnamed development on the 25-acre property located on the west side of Wickham south of Pineda Court, said
Eric Hardoon, operations manager for Suntree Internal Medicine and Suntree/Viera Properties.
The idea is to have the entire area created for medically related businesses so that, for example, tests could be run in concert with other
appointments in the same complex.
“We’re trying to make it a medical/office park, truly a one-stop shop but we’re going upscale. There are going to be fountains with water all around it,’’ he said.
The architectural style of the estimated $4 million Suntree Internal Medicine facility will be modern contemporary with a South
Florida twist, he said.“This will stand out. It
will be anything but a strip mall. I think it‘s going to increase appreciation of the whole area. It‘s going to be upscale, a South Florida flavor, high-end tropical atmosphere, he said.
Abe Hardoon founded the practice that also includes his son Dr. Scott Hardoon.
Other amenities will include a jogging trail with picnic tables. We’re trying to make it where you can spend half a day going to the doctor’s office and not feel it.”
The Hardoons kept the developer of their current building aboard, Kyle Militano.
“You’re going to see wrought iron and fountains. We’re trying to go above strip malls.
Hardoon’s father Abe Hardoon, founded the practices that have grown nearly exponentially.
“We started out as a small 650-sqare-foot office in 2002 and we’ve grown to this building at 7,000 square feet and it‘s been full for the past year,” Eric Hardoon said of the Jordan Blass building.
We’ve grown to five doctors and we‘re going to continue to grow. We‘re maxed out.
Getting into larger quarters will be welcomed for the growing practice, but the magnitude of the expansion makes the project even more exciting, he said.
“We have all the site plans and we’re in the permitting process. We’re getting close. We’re hoping to break ground this month (May),’’ he said.

Which Wich, The Avenue Viera’s newest eatery, has a unique concept when it comes to serving customers fantastic food: let patrons design their own sandwiches or salads, using the huge variety of accompaniments and condiments.
The concept has been a successful one in Dallas, where a man named Jeff Sinelli came up with the idea. Now, there are more than 200 franchises in the Northwest and in Florida.
Jet Parmar and his partners, Jay Patel and Harry Patel, opened the Viera restaurant on Jan. 11. The men had decided this was something the area would readily embrace.
The idea is for customers to visit the restaurant, choose
a paper bag according to what their main sandwich ingredient will be (tuna, turkey, beef, vegetarian, chicken) and then check off what items they want on the sandwich.
They can even choose to “skinny my sandwich”, whereby a good portion of the sub roll is removed, lowering the carbohydrates in the overall sandwich. Once they have selected their sandwich or decided to make it into a lettuce wrap or a salad, they write their name on the bag and present it to the cashier.
The customer can also order a drink and chips from the cashier. Within minutes, a fresh, wholesome and delicious meal is ready and waiting for the customer to pick up at the counter in the original paper bag.
There are children’s
selections as well as milkshakes and cookies. Breakfast sandwiches are another favorite. All ingredients are freshly sliced every morning at the restaurant location, and breakfast sandwiches are available all day.
“We offer catering,” Parmar said, “and customers can sign up for the VIBE club, which will update promotions via email. Don’t forget to draw a picture of your experience on the back of your bag before you leave. It will have a place of honor on Which Wich’s art wall alongside other pretty impressive art work.”

If you’re a big fan of Bonefish Grill, mark July 15 down on your calendar.
That’s when the restaurant’s location at The Avenue Viera is set to open. It will be the second Brevard County location for the chain, which specializes in fresh fish from around the globe and other seafood selections, including its well-known Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer.
The restaurant, which will be more than 5,000 square feet, will be located in the building previously occupied by New York & Co. and adjacent to Carmike Cinemas.
It will also feature outdoor seating. The company, which is
headquartered in Tampa, has been in business for 13 years. It previously opened is first Brevard County location on Merritt Island last November
The popular chain is another great addition to The Avenue Viera and the surrounding area. Chipotle just opened a restaurant next door, and Pollo Tropical is expected to open its new location at The Avenue Viera in late June.
It will also be the second Brevard County location for Pollo Tropical, which opened in West Melbourne, just outside of Palm Bay in December.
With so many good restaurants to choose from, The Avenue should be hopping with shoppers and diners in the coming months.
“I think the economy went down for a while and now it’s coming back,” said The Avenue Viera general manager Leslie Wright. “Pollo Tropical represents our last outparcel. Sales are going up and the population is going up in the Melbourne/Viera area, so that helps to attract other national tenants like Bonefish.” VV

For Viera High School sophomore Christi Engel, 15, the journey to needing a kidney transplant all started in February 2012 with a tingling sensation in her fingertips and face.
Now the family readies for a transplant surgery May 29 in Tampa — from her donor mother Kelly Cotner — and plans to participate in a May 4 walk in Cocoa Beach to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation.
“It didn’t sound like anything but they ran some blood tests anyway and called us back the next day and told us to get her to a hospital immediately,’’ Kelly Cotner said.
Doctors figured out the problem pretty quickly. Christi suffers from Juvenile Nephronophthisis, a rare
genetic disease which causes cysts to form in the kidneys.
“It’s a recessive gene that we both (mother and father) have. Usually it’s kidney failure by 10 to 13 years of age,’’ Kelly Cotner said.
Her father Andy Cotner, who raised her as his own, said it’s ironic to be asked how Christi is doing these days.
“It’s kind of hard to answer because on one hand she’s got this kidney failure which is a pretty serious condition, but on the other hand, on a daily basis she seems normal. She’s going to school, taking college courses and doesn’t feel sick very often,’’ he said.
Christi was officially put on the “list” for transplant at Tampa General Hospital in September of 2012, where the transplant will take place.
Participating in the kidney
walk in Cocoa Beach is a way the family can raise awareness for the need for organ donors and to help other families in similar situations.
Their team, this year called Christi’s Kidneys took top honors at the 2012 event, raising more than $5,000 for the cause. This year’s goal: $7,500.
To get ready for the transplant, and the walk, Christi and her mother are participating in an “insanity workout” program.
“We’re trying to get in the best possible shape so the recovery is a little easier,’’ Kelly Cotner said.
Raising funds for the kidney walk keeps the family engaged in the issue. They don’t need to raise money personally for the family because of good insurance.
“We’ve been very fortunate.
One of the reasons we’re raising money is we know there are a lot of people out there who are not as lucky as us to have the insurance coverage that we do,’’ Andy
Cotner said.To contribute to the
Cotner’s kidney walk team, Christi‘s Kidneys, visit the website donate.kidney.org/goto/Christiskidneys. VV

There was a time when the neighborhood pharmacy was just that, not a huge chain selling everything including groceries.
Pharmacists were trusted members of the community and kept the best interest of their customers at heart, concentrating on both providing over-the-counter drugs and filling prescriptions.
That smaller-scale personal service, similar to that offered at Suntree Pharmacy, is now also available at Lordoni Discount Pharmacy, owned by pharmacist Olu Oni.
“It’s a combination of my last name and the name Lord. It’s a typical pharmacy but smaller,’’ he said.
The difference between Lordoni, which officially opened in early April, and the other larger pharmacies will soon include certification to allow on-site compounding of medicine.
“We’re looking to do that, but right now were not doing any compounding. It‘s in the pipeline,’’ he said.
It takes a while to build a personal reputation for a small pharmacy but the initial reaction has been positive, Oni said.
“It’s been good so far,’’ he said.Lordoni Discount Pharmacy is located at
6300 N. Wickham Rd., Suite 126. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It is closed on Sunday.

Helping local families goes globalBy LinDA WiGGinS
Stay tuned to the “Ellen Show”, “CNN” and the “Today Show” to see a new Suntree nonprofit group earn $100,000 in its maiden 5K voyage May 25. Miles of Love generates support for families of children affected by a life-threatening illness and promotes healthy lifestyles in the local area.
Why will the new nonprofit reach such a lofty goal when most first-year 5K runs net closer to $5,000? Miles of Love has partnered with I Talk to Strangers, a worldwide movement that promises to bring great exposure to the Suntree cause.
Robbie Stokes Jr. grew up in Titusville and went on to travel the world and work in the Washington, D.C. political world. The young, upwardly mobile darling of D.C. quit to form I Talk to Strangers. He is shooting a documentary film about his experience.
“When you reach out to other people and tell them of your plans and your mission, you have the opportunity to get their help in ways you can’t even imagine,” Stokes said.. “That’s what it will take for us to help this group reach its goal, and that is why we will accomplish it.”
Not only does Miles of Love host athletic and other fundraising events, but it trains former couch potatoes to complete in endurance events in exchange for a pledge to raise a certain minimum amount of funds.
“You can get fit by using other people’s money,” Miles of Love founder Vimarie Monopoli of Suntree said with a smile. “You get a personal trainer who will work with you to build up strength and endurance slowly, and make other healthy lifestyle changes. You also get coaching to help you
get people behind you with their donations and other support.”
Like Stokes, Monopoli is extremely social and likable, and which translates into the volunteers and money. Her two daughters, attend Suntree Elementary School, where the classroom volunteer enlists the support of other moms in the relatively well-to-do community. She also is a teacher at Sunshine Learning Center and coaxes area moms of preschoolers aboard.
Stokes has several tutorial pages on his website to teach Miles of Love volunteers to charm favors and cash from their connections.
The Miles of Love donations could not come at a better time, according to Kelly Miller, whose 4-year-old daughter, Rachel, has “smooth brain syndrome,” a form of encephaly or enlarged brain. She needs $600 in medicine to stay alive, but her mother must stay home from work to provide round-the-clock care. She tag-teams with her husband for relief, and he works and provides insurance, which has already maxed out its benefits for Rachel and it is not yet mid-year.
“This is a typical scenario in families with children whose health is challenged,” Monopoli said. “I am blessed that I don’t have that in my family, so when I see a friend who has a need, I want to get into action.”
The difference between traditional nonprofits that either serve a particular population suffering from a common ailment or provide a certain type of benefit, is that Miles of Love can surround an entire family whose needs may be intense. Families may include those in Suntree who don’t otherwise qualify for typical charities, but face a firestorm of need all the same.
“Love endures all things, and we stand ready to help Brevard families in a time of crisis endure and prevail with the support of their friends, neighbors and local organizations,” Monopoli said.
The Miracle Run 5K takes place at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at Cocoa Village Riverfront Park, with registration at 7 a.m. To register for the race, raise money or improve fundraising skills, go to italktostrangers.com. For more information on Miles of Love, call 321-505-0377. VV
ViERA VoiCE Linda WigginsKelly and Rachel Miller get ready to go down the slide to greet Miles of Love volunteer Cristina Babilonia, I Talk to Strangers founder Robbie Stokes and Miles of Love founder Vimarie Monopoli.

MAS Brevard school of martial arts and dance has a fun agenda planned for kids ages 5 to 15 this summer. The school will offer a fun filled weekly camp beginning Tuesday, May 28 to include instruction in karate and dance.
Dance includes ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, acrobatic and musical theatre. There will also be a fitness class, Zumba class, as well as many games and indoor activities. Currently, students are enrolled for after school programs and are picked up from their schools via a MAS bus. Bus pickup will be available during the summer also.
Mike and Sabrina Smith, owners of MAS, have owned the school for 10 years.
During the school year, there are four regular counselors plus the Smiths, but during the summer, when membership increases, there are 12 regular counselors.
The school is highly secure, with security cameras in place and the front entrance manned at all times. The children are never left on their own while at the school.
MAS has a fleet of four buses that transport up to 22 students each to various schools in the area. In the summer, that may increase as needed. Every Friday during the summer months, Mr. J’s Ice Cream Truck visits the school and there are weekly field trips planned. Registration fees are very reasonable, making the summer program affordable to most. On Saturday, Aug. 3, there will be an end-of- summer barbeque, which
will include carnival games and performances. All campers and their families are invited.
There is an end-of-year performance planned for 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19 at Viera High School Auditorium in Viera. Tickets are $8 through May 10, and $12 after or at the door. They can be purchased at MAS studios and at the recital door of Viera High.
The Smiths say they are passionate about their school and its children. The children learn discipline and good manners, all a part of the karate regimen. The school is located at 597 Haverty Ct., Suite 80, in Rockledge.

VIERA VOICE photoSavannah Gantz’s “United We Stood, United We Stand” earned a first place at the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, Post 8191 patriotic art competition.
By CARL KotALA
Savannah Gantz’s brainstorm turned out to be a winner, and Jean-Luc Maske-Stockdale’s dedication and creativity earned him a top recognition as well.
The two Viera High art students finished first and second at this year’s “Patriotic Art” competition sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8191.
Gantz, a junior, won a $150 gift certificate. Her piece, entitled “United We Stood, United We Stand” is now entered in the state competition and could possibly advance to the nationals.
Maske-Stockdale won a $100 gift certificate for his piece, which was themed, “The Hidden Hero.”
Gantz said her idea came to her after a brainstorming session. The piece starts with the half face of a colonial citizen and then follows the same process of faces throughout the wars the United States has fought. It concludes with the face of today’s American citizen and a drawing of the statue of liberty. It’s all wrapped in the background of the American flag, which she drew to scale.
She used colored pencils to capture the details on a 16x24 inch canvas
“I wanted to convey the message that we’ve all fought for the same purpose of freedom all throughout history,” she said.
Gantz and Maske-Stockdale, who both study in teacher Susan West’s class, are serious about their artistic careers.
“I really love cartoonish kind of drawing, so I want to go into animation and work for a Disney or Pixar kind of thing,” Gantz said.
While Maske-Stockdale isn’t quite sure what kind of career path he will follow, the freshman would like to do something that involves painting, with some interior design work on the side.
For his piece, Maske-Stockdale wanted to include the American flag, and also spent a lot of time studying it to be exact. He drew the outline of an eagle and then painted it as such to create a brilliant effect.
“You can see the outline of the eagle, but it’s really not there,” he said. “It was an optical illusion, which was actually the theme for this year’s art class (and) which I love to do.” VV

Waves touch the Viera shoresBy LinDA WiGGinS
The beach is coming to Viera. Owners and fans of the popular beach and surf-themed Long Doggers restaurant broke ground
April 25 at its planned location, 1970 Viera Blvd., just east of the Interstate 95 overpass.
“We are excited about the new location because we see tremendous growth potential in Viera,” said Long Doggers
spokesman Steven Hicks. “We think the area has a real neighborhood feel that works so well for our locations.”
Hicks lives in Viera where his sons play football. Long Doggers has a reputation for being community oriented, sponsoring many youth sports teams and other family-based activities.
“I can’t wait for us to get connected locally to the Viera area. You will see us everywhere,” Hicks said. He said the precise location – within sight of the overpass – is a ‘hot corner’ poised well to serve both East and West Viera.
Long Doggers Eateries, Inc. has four other locations, dating back to 1997 with the original location in Indialantic, Melbourne in 2003, Satellite Beach in 2004 and Palm Bay in 2007.
Each new location typically employs 25 to 30 full- and part-time workers in a 2500- to 3,000-square-foot setting with additional outdoor bar and seating areas.
The restaurants and the theme tag line — Long Doggers Radically Relaxed Grill and Brew — are not new to Brevard County District 4 Commissioner Mary Bolin Lewis, who hails from Satellite Beach.
“I am thrilled with the success of Long Doggers and look forward to its presence in the Viera/Suntree area,” Bolin Lewis said at the April 25 groundbreaking. “With its focus on youth and families, it’s a perfect match for Viera.”
For more information, go to longdoggers.com or Facebook/LongDoggers. VV

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” certainly applies as hurricane season approaches, June 1. It’s never too soon for associations to formulate a plan.
Space in this column only allows covering the highlights. Your association may want to set up a committee or appoint a chairperson to be sure all the details of your community are addressed. The on-site manager or management company should put these plans in place and coordinate with the board to be sure they are implemented. I suggest an actual checklist be prepared so you can rest assured all the bases are covered.
Far in advance, precautions can be taken. Be sure that emergency lighting and any stand-by power supplies are functioning properly. Hurricane shutters may be sticky or corroded during the winter months. Check your association rules before closing them or putting them up. Make sure trees are trimmed and hedges pruned. Buildings should be inspected for loose tiles, shingles and wood.Communities with lakes and
canals should be sure the ingress and egress levies are clear and working properly to prevent unnecessary flooding.
Plan evacuation routes of buildings or common areas. Consider how elderly and disabled residents will be assisted. Check all of your insurance policies with your agent. Insurance companies do not allow changes to policies when a storm is approaching.
A hurricane watch is issued when a storm is 24 to 36 hours away. A hurricane warning is 24 hours before the storm. Depending on the size of your community, these time frames need to be considered when commencing the plan.
Swimming pool water should be lowered. Make sure there are extra chemicals to prevent pollution during a power outage. Anything loose in common areas or balconies should be secured. You’ll be surprised how the heavy items are blown about by a hurricane.
This is designed to be a primer for associations to consider. Your association may have more items to include or some that do not apply. Residents will be much calmer as the storm approaches if they know the association has a plan in place. VV

With last month’s National Autism Awareness Month also came news that the once shocking rate of children diagnosed with some form of autism has now jumped again.
A study released now finds that one in 50 children have a diagnosis of some form of autism, up from the one-in-86 rate from the previous study that shocked the nation in 2007. The figures are from a phone-survey analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
Communication is the best way to help children with autism achieve their full potential, according to experts assembled for a March 19 Brevard County School District workshop to provide parents with the latest strategies for success.
Autism covers a wide range of neurological conditions that includes
mild Asperger’s syndrome, where children may be highly intelligent but lack appropriate social skills, to severe autism, in which a child cannot speak or feed himself.
In all cases, the children face difficulty in transitioning from one task to another, and may find new places, sounds, smells or textures disconcerting. Helping them know what to expect is key.
“A great suggestion would be to right now take your child to the school she will be attending in the fall and show her around the cafeteria and teach her how it works, prepare them for the noise and crowds, how to get to the classroom and how she will get home,” said Sky Beard, executive director of the Early Learning Coalition.
Another important form of communication is to prepare the teacher for the child she or he is about to receive.
“Don’t expect a new
teacher to know your child. If you can share your child’s areas of strengths and gaps you are working on, it will save the teacher three weeks of frustration,” Beard said.
In order to help a child communicate internally, it is best to make them aware of their diagnosis as they get old enough to understand it, said Dana Gadaire, school psycholgist and coordinator of the social skills group at the Scott Center for Autism at Florida Institute of Technology.
“You frame it by focusing on the positives, and with autism there can be many strengths, and then you talk about the areas where they will need to work to bridge the gaps in their abilities,” Gadaire said.

Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus)
A tortoise is a terrestrial turtle. All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. In Florida, the gopher tortoise is the state tortoise and the state’s only true tortoise; it inhabits all 67 counties. Like the gopher, it skillfully digs burrows. During the Great Depression, it was branded the Hoover chicken — food for the impoverished.
Both sexes are similar in general appearance. Coloration is dark tan or gray. The carapace (top shell) length reaches about 12 inches. Noteworthy are shovel-like front claws and elephantine hind legs. Sexual dimorphism is obvious in the plastron (bottom shell) which is concave in the male and flat in the female. Lifespan covers 40 to 60 years. Except for breeding, it is solitary.
This species thrives in well-drained sandy habitats: coastal dunes, pine flatwoods and scrub.
Sparse tree canopies allow the penetrating sunlight to incubate eggs, warm this reptile, and sustain vegetation. Grasses and legumes are primary feed; other favorites are seasonal fruit, flowers and prickly pear cactus.
Water is basically obtained from nourishment.
For protection, a tortoise digs several burrows in sandy soil. More than one tortoise may occupy a burrow at the same time. Tunnel dimensions vary. In east-central Florida, average dimensions are 15 feet long and 6 feet deep. The opening suggests the size of the inhabitant. The apron of sand at the entrance often provides a nesting location. At one time or another, the resident tortoise shares its shelter with numerous dependent species: crickets, frogs, snakes and mice. These creatures (commensals) also seek refuge in abandoned
burrows. Consequently, the accommodating gopher tortoise is a keystone species — comparable to the supporting keystone in an arch.
Regrettably, this creature has the lowest reproductive potential of documented turtles, and survival is minimal for eggs and hatchlings. However, the foremost threat is an endangered ecosystem. VV

SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE
A team of 20 girls from Freedom Athletics in Rockledge will be among 300 cheerleading teams competing to reach the Summit Varsity All Levels National Championship May 4 and 5 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
The event is the new definitive all-levels championship in cheerleading. “It is the World Series of Little League for cheerleading,” said Jenn Hunter, general
manager at Freedom Athletics. Team Loyalty at Freedom Athletics won a bid to compete at the Summit, which pits teams
from around the country. “They’ve won the chance to be No. 1,” said Freedom Athletics owner McDowell, a life-
long athlete who cheered for Brevard Community College and is the winner of numerous cheerleading titles.
Competitive gym Freedom Athletics teaches cheerleading to boys and girls ages 3 to 18, coaching 180 students from throughout the county. Team Loyalty is a feather in the cap of McDowell and the staff at Freedom Athletics, which celebrated its 10th anniversary April 20. The gym moved to a 14,000-square-foot facility late last year.
Freedom Athletics offers cheer team training, dance and hip hop teams, as well as tumbling classes and stunt camps.
Team Loyalty, Freedom Athletic’s Youth Level 2 team which was invited to participate in the Summit, is composed of girls ages 8 to 12 years old. Winning is part of doing business for this group of pre-teens who ran off with the national title at the American Open Cheerdance Championships.
“They’re considered in the top 10 percent of the nation,” Hunter said. “They’ve had a great season. They’re hard workers, hard-driven and with a great attitude.”Freedom Athletics will host cheerleading tryouts May 23 to 25.The competitive cheerleading gym is located at 290 Gus Hipp Blvd. in Rockledge.
