JANUARY 2014

Developing The Whole Person — Spirit, Mind, And Body

Page 2: One Voice - January 2014

FROM OUR PRESIDENTDear Parents,

I pray you found rich blessings in welcoming Our Savior, Jesus Christ, this past Christmas and that 2014 will be a year filled with hope and peace for all. We have had many activities at PND since we last spoke, and I want to share that information with you.

• Our building project and capital campaign contributions have continued to increase as we prepare to begin construction in early April. We have completed more than half of the parish campaigns and established both an alumni campaign and a parent campaign. People have been generous. We need $2 million to complete the majority of the track and stadium. As soon as these funds are pledged or paid, we will be able to begin construction.

• We have been focused on outreach these last couple of months with a can drive in November, food baskets in December, and many other ways of reaching out to the young, the needy, and the poor. Our students’ hearts are very much attuned to what Pope Francis is calling all of us to, and that is helping others.

• The Campus Ministry program continues to develop, offering more spiritual events for our students. Retreats, prayer groups, and mission trips have continued to grow and help our students and faculty deepen their relationships with Christ.

• Registration for our freshmen parents was recently held, and we are looking forward to another large class. Catholic education is an investment in your child’s future. PND provides a spiritually wholesome and integrated environment with a spirit of academic excellence. Our students are happy and fulfilled.

• Bishop Jenky published an excellent Festival Letter in which he wrote on the Holy Bible. It is a good reflection and can be found on the Diocesan website or our own PND website.

• PND’s gala and auction is coming up on March 22 at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria beginning at 6:00 p.m. Please join us as we celebrate the great work that PND is accomplishing for its students and as we support our rich traditions and lasting legacy.

Thank you for your support of our administration, faculty, and staff. We love your children and do our best to form them into true disciples of Jesus and in academic excellence. Thank you for entrusting them to us.

As we journey in 2014 with Christ, I pray for abundant blessings upon you and your families. May you find peace and joy in living every day in and for Christ.

Msgr. Merdian

COUNSELING

FREE APPLICATION FOR FINANCIAL AID (FAFSA)

Seniors: Seniors applying for financial aid are encouraged to complete the FAFSA forms as soon as possible. To commence the process, parents must access the FAFSA website at www.fafsa.ed.gov and complete the FAFSA form. Parents must apply for two (2) Personal Identification Numbers (PIN), one for the student and one for the parent. Keep these numbers in a secure place, as they will be used for all the years a student attends college. Parents’ federal income tax forms, and students that were employed in 2013, do not have to have completed their income tax to complete the FAFSA. State monies that are distributed on a first come, first served basis using the FAFSA filing date when disbursing State grants. Check the dates for the financial aid application at the student’s college choice, as each college sets its own financial aid deadlines.

PLAN TESTING RESULTS

Test results for the PLAN, a pre-ACT test, were distributed to sophomores on Tuesday, December 17, during an Advisory assembly. These test results assess student achievement in the areas of English, Reading, Math, and Science Reasoning. The PLAN also has college readiness benchmarks, projected estimates of ACT scoring, a career interest assessment, and areas in need of skill improvement. After receiving the test results, please contact the student’s Counselor with any questions/concerns. Additional information may be found at www.act.org/plan.

PSAT TESTING RESULTS

Junior test results for the PSAT/NMSQT were distributed to on Friday, December 16, during an Advisory assembly. The test results assess Verbal and Math skills, and are used by College Board to determine National Merit Semifinalists each year. After receiving the test results, please contact the student’s Counselor with any questions/concerns. Additional information may be found at www.collegeboard.org.

ALL-DAY ADORATIONFriday, January 10th, Peoria Notre Dame began all day adoration in the school’s chapel.

After the theology department visited Bloomington Central Catholic during our faculty development day, we had the opportunity to visit with them about how they offer all day Friday adoration and we decided that it was worthwhile for us to do the same.

After Friday morning Masses, I will place our Lord in the monstrance and He will remain on the altar in adoration until benediction at 3pm each Friday. Some parent volunteers have signed up for regular adoration hours to adore the Lord during passing periods. Theology teachers will be regularly taking their students for 10+minutes of adoration each Friday as part of their normal lesson plan: the whole point of studying the faith is to encounter Him who is the Reason of the Father.

Peace,Father Adam Stimpson

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Irish Families,

I wanted to take this opportunity to inform you about some of the success of our recent endeavors. We received news in early November that once again Peoria Notre Dame High School has been named an Apple Distinguished school for the 2013 through 2015 school year. Apple partners with thousands of schools throughout the U.S. and names only 100 schools each year to this honor which recognizes innovative practice and commitment to effective technology

integration. While we enter the fourth year of our laptop program at PND, we are certainly honored to receive this award. We know that there is still much work to do and that our program has room for improvement, and we continue to work hard through ongoing staff development to make improvements to our program.

Additionally we’ve received official notification that we have been awarded a grant from the Oak River Foundation of $30,000 over the next three years to fund a number of our staff development programs. These dollars will be used as part of our ongoing work in the area of staff development. We are blessed to have a tremendous group of talented instructors who are committed to continuous improvement.

Next week we’ll celebrate Catholic Schools week with an array of different activities. On Monday morning we’ll offer prayers for the area parish shut-ins. On Tuesday our students will write letters to area shut-ins during advisory. Wednesday will feature the annual Catholic trivia contest. Thursday will be an out of uniform day for $2 to Catholic Charities. On Friday we’ll celebrate All-School Mass. Our recent retirees will join us for breakfast before Mass. Friday night will feature the return of the Kiss the Pig faculty vs. student basketball game in the gym @ 7:00 pm. Admission is $1 to benefit Catholic Charities. Sunday February 2 will be the annual pancake breakfast from 8:00am to 12:00 in the PND commons. Please consider joining us at Mass on Friday and for the pancake breakfast and Kiss the Pig game.

Yours in Christ,

Charlie A. Roy

CYCLING TOWARD A BRIGHT FUTURE

In a school accustom to sports, rarely does a student come along who has a unique take on athletics. Such a student is Notre Dame junior Mitchell Gray, son of David and Kimberly Gray of East Peoria, IL. Mitch races in competitive cycling. Presently, he is a member of the Mack Cycling team of Springfield, IL. His career in competitive cycling had a humble beginning. “I started when I was fourteen by just riding around the neighborhood,” said Mitch.

Eventually, Mitch talked with his neighbor, Steve Driscoll, a member of team Mack, about competitive cycling. Mitch bought a competitive cycle and began training with Driscoll and others. The following year, he invested in a better quality bike and some Mack team clothing.

Mitch participates in criterium racing. The track consists four one block segments of a city street blocked off to form a closed track. Between twenty and fifty racers compete in the event which lasts about forty-five minutes. Speed can reach in excess of twenty-five mph with cyclists often only a few inches from each other.

Last December, an 82 year-old man drove his car into Mitch while he was on a solo training ride. “He hit me from behind at about fifty miles an hour.” The impact catapulted Mitch over the elderly man’s vehicle. He ended up in roadside ditch with a cracked helmet. “The driver then dragged my bike under his car for another 200 feet.” Paramedics transported Mitch to the OSF St. Francis emergency room. Eight hours later he returned home sore and suffering some minor cuts and bruises.

Mitch is the reigning Illinois State Cycling champion in his age bracket. He has posted victories at Nationals and won darn near every junior event in which he has competed. Next year he hopes to compete in both the Canadian and United State’s Nationals. To that end he trains about 200 miles a week or eight thousand miles a year. “My dream is to become a professional cyclist traveling the world.” Mitch appears to be well on his way to realizing his dream.

MUSIC NOTESThe PND choir has had a busy school year so far. The PND Choir provided the music for the 150th Anniversary of Catholic Education in Peoria Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral on August 30. They joined with St. Thomas More (Champaign) choir members to provide music for the Assembly Days with Cardinal Burke mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral on October 28. Congratulations to senior John Nogaj for being placed First Chair viola in the ILMEA District 2 music festival on November 9. It was a great weekend for musicians!

The Peoria Notre Dame Band and Choral Concert was Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm, in the auditorium. The Concert Choir and Jazz and Chamber Ensemble looked forward to performing for you. The PND Jazz and Chamber Ensemble is preparing to participate in the Millikin University Vocal Jazz Festival to be help February 22, 2014

The PND Choir is currently trying to raise enough funds to purchase formal wear for concerts. Please consider making a donation to the PND Choir. They are always in need of gently used 3-ring binders. Students who are interested in joining the PND Choir should contact Mrs. Strauss at [email protected].

Last July, Mr. Thomas Kennedy asked his son, senior Tate Kennedy, if would be interested in creating a video to promote the Forward March and Run sponsored by Goodwill Industries. “My dad serves on the board of Directors at Goodwill, and he thought this would be a great opportunity for me to pick up service hours while doing something I really enjoy,” said Tate. Forward March and Run was a fund-raising race intended to both promote and financially support the myriad of veteran services provided by Good Will Industries. The race occurred on October 12, 2013 in downtown Peoria.

“After meeting with Patty Fuchs, president of Goodwill, and Craig Armstrong, the head public relations, I had a pretty good grasp on what they wanted. My creative approach is to let music drive the visuals. However, I did not want to just lift something from iTunes or use a “canned”, recognizable commercial song.” Tate decided to write the score himself.

“I had never made music before, and I still know nothing about notes or any of that.” Using a program called Logic Pro X, he engineered a score that he felt gave the right amount of heartfelt hope to the video. “It was pretty much a miracle that the score fit the video so perfectly.”

After a little over months and 150 hours of work, he had completed the project. “My dad and I premiered the video for Patty Fuchs and her staff.” The first audience seemed very impressed and grateful to Tate for his contribution. The race went well for its first year, and Goodwill can use my video many more times in the years to come. “I am very happy that something I love to do can be used to help so many people,” said Tate with a smile.
