Happy 2013! The beginning of a new year is a time for reflection and goal set-ting. As we celebrate Alpha Delta State’s 75th anniversary, we will honor our past and share reflections on the work of those who preceded us. We will also set goals and work to build our future. The Alpha Delta State Convention, April 12-14, will be a time to build our future through workshops, the Info Fair and sharing with one another. Please review the convention information in this edi-tion of The Voice and register to attend. You’ll be glad you did – you will have a great time! You will become better in-formed about Society business, gain knowledge, enjoy fabulous music, par-ticipate in a variety of workshops, expe-rience a lovely hotel, enjoy delicious food, have many opportunities to network with member friends both old and new, and be a part of history as we celebrate our 75th birthday! Each year when I drive home from the state convention, I think about all of the friends I have as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and just how much richer those friendships have made my life. Your state leadership team has been working diligently this biennium to strength-en Alpha Delta State. At the state convention, the Bylaws Committee will be present-ing the proposed revised Bylaws for approval;; the Finance Committee will be present-ing the proposed budget;; the 75th Anniversary Committee will be finalizing their pro-jects;; the Nominations Committee will be presenting the slate of officers for 2013-15;; the Scholarship Committee will be awarding scholarships;; the Professional Affairs Committee will be announcing the Student Teacher Grant recipients;; Gold Key awards will be presented;; the Strategic Action Planning Committee will continue to share their plan for ADS;; the Membership Committee will honor the lives of our de-parted members;; the Expansion Committee will honor chapters who have regained former members;; and others will be involved in workshops and the Info Fair. I am so proud of the work of our entire state leadership team, and want to thank them for all they have done to build the future for Alpha Delta State. Although the state level leadership team is vital to the future of our organization, we must never forget that the chapter is the of our organization. Dr. Beverly Helms, our International president, notes, “We strengthen our Society as we share our vision and build relationships within our chapters and as we connect with and en-gage every member. The chapter is the heart of our Society. Membership begins and ends there. As we continue to support our chapters, we will revitalize our state organi-zations and strengthen our International Society.” Through my chapter visits, I realize chapter members not only strengthen our state and international organization, mem-bers also significantly impact children, our communities and one another. Thank you for all that you do and for your commitment to Delta Kappa Gamma and its purposes. It is an honor to serve as your presi-dent. I look forward to seeing many of you at the 75th Anniversary State Convention

April 12-14, 2013! Fondly,

HONORING OUR PAST — BUILDING OUR FUTURE Dr. Norma Kirby, State President

The Alpha Delta State Communications/ Publicity Committee chairman and The Voice editor have received at least one newsletter from 56 of our Ohio chapters as of December 19, 2012. There is vast improvement in the newsletters, both in content and use of technology. Some chapters are trying a newsletter for the very first time. Cost savings for printing, paper and mailing can be re-duced by distributing the newsletter digi-tally to your chapter members who have computer access. Include the state editor, Ann Todd, and the Communications Committee chairman, Sally Gillmore, in your distribution list because that will give you polish points for the Gold Key Award. The State President also appreci-ates receiving chapter newsletters. The committee is planning a work-shop for the 2013 State Convention to help and encourage chapters to keep their members informed with a regularly pub-lished newsletter. The workshop will feature successful chapter newsletter edi-tors as well as "experts" from the Com-munications/Publicity Committee. Dis-cussion will include the differences be-tween meeting notices and regular news-letters. Please plan to join us with your questions and we'll try to find answers. Communications/Publicity Commit-tee: Eileen McNally, Beta Delta, Web-master;; Melanie Riley, Delta;; Nina Stoltz, Gamma Sigma;; Ann Todd, Zeta, Editor;; Sally Gillmore, Sigma, Chairman.

Newsletters Galore!

The Strategic Action Planning Committee cordially invites members interested in solv-ing concerns in their chapter to attend an informative workshop at the state convention. This session will focus on the process of developing a chapter plan to help resolve those concerns. If this sounds like a mind-numbing experience, it is probably the in-timidating title. Who wants something else to do? We need more fun—and more des-sert—and not more work! But, this style of planning involves all members and coordi-nates the work of several committees and individuals. It makes realizing a goal more do-able. Perhaps your particular chapter does not need strategic action planning? Healthy chapters:

initiate new members every year;; mentor initiates in DKG opportunities and benefits;; retain the interest of “veteran” members;; maintain excellent attendance at every meeting;; provide programs of interest to all;; easily fill leadership positions in the chapter;; share the work of projects and chapter responsibilities;; value the unique experiences and skills of each member.

These chapters make a difference! But, if your chapter has a concern with one of these areas—or anything else—strategic action planning may be a good thing to try. We are convinced strategic action planning is energizing and makes things easier for chapter operations. Strategic Action Planning Committee: Dr. Norma Kirby, Alpha Delta, Alpha Del-ta State President, ex officio with vote;; Linda Harrison, Pi, rationale and consistency;; Jane Meese, Alpha Xi, co-chairman;; and Beth Archer, Alpha Psi, co-chairman.

Have you ever wondered just what becomes of your chapters’ donations to the World Fellowship Fund? Are you surprised to find out the WFF is used to create fellowships (aka scholarships) for women throughout the world who wish to do graduate work in the United States and Canada? That is the sole purpose of the World Fellowship Fund. In fact, how this fund was created and how it has benefitted thousands of women throughout the world is the topic of the upcoming workshop sponsored by the state World Fellowship Committee at the convention in Columbus, Ohio in 2013. The title of the workshop is, coincidentally, World Fellowships Equal Scholar-ships! The state committee hopes to see many of you at the workshop to learn about how your money is really helping advance the higher education of women world-wide. Look for a more detailed article about the workshop in the March/April issue of The Voice. Becky Leighty, Gamma Xi, State World Fellowship Committee Chairman

World Fellowships Equal Scholarships The Finance Committee has reduced re-imbursements, recommended use of elec-tronic distribution of The Voice and state materials and use of electronic meetings to reduce expenses in its budget. Mem-bership continues to drop and expenses continue to rise so savings are being re-duced each fiscal year to meet expenses. After very careful consideration, the Committee is recommending the dues for active members be raised $3.00, from the current $7.00 to $10.00 per year, and the dues for reserve members be raised $2.00, from the current $3.00 to $5.00 per year. There has not been an increase in dues since 1985 when we enjoyed a larg-er membership and a lower cost of living. It is truly remarkable an organization has been able to continue operating so effec-tively for so long without a dues increase. This recommendation is being brought to your attention so you are aware and can discuss at chapter meet-ings. The recommendation will be pre-sented at the General Session of the Spring Convention and voted on by the registrants of the Convention. Any ques-tions, concerns, suggestions may be di-rected to the Finance Committee. Your consideration of this important issue is appreciated. Finance Committee: Patricia Eshbaugh, Beta Psi;; Pam Feick, Alpha Delta;; Connie Fleming, Alpha Tau;; An-nie Roegner, Beta Lambda;; Meier Bauer, Gamma Phi, Chairman.

The Bottom Line

The 75th Anniversary Committee is excited to know many members/chapters are busi-ly collecting new children’s books to help achieve the goal of one thousand (1,000) books for our literacy project. We know the six major children’s hospitals will be thrilled to receive our donations. This special state convention will soon be a reality, and the anniversary committee promised information regarding delivery of books upon arrival to the convention. First of all, it would be very helpful if the books could be bundled/bagged and labeled into the following age groups: Infant-Pre K, 1st–3rd grade, 4th–6th grade and young adult. There will be tubs at the registration desk labeled in the same manner. There-fore, just place the books in the appropriate age group’s tub and committee members will keep the tubs empty and user friendly. Should a chapter choose to bring their books in boxes, please label the boxes/or books in the same manner. We thank you for helping us with this part of getting the books ready for hospital delivery. The committee would appreciate if each chapter president would notify Past State President Marilyn Slusser by March 15, 2013, with the anticipated number of books your chapter plans to donate. This will allow the committee to have necessary supplies available to prepare the books for distribution. Check your red state directory for Mari-lyn’s contact information. Thank you to each member/chapter that will be participating in this most worthy project.

Anniversary Book Award Winner Announced Ruth Fawcett, Gamma Iota Chapter, has been named the recipient of the Alpha Delta State 75th Anniversary Book Award and will be recognized at the state convention, April 12-14, 2013, for the third novel in her trilogy, set in a school. Why would a dedicated school principal retire early then spend her time in a fic-tional school? That’s exactly what Ruth Fawcett, former principal of Washington

School in Eastlake, did. She opted out of life in a real school to spend her days writing novels set in a fictional school: Poore Pond Elementary. She filled the school with lifelike characters and realistic scenes. She wove the story through three novels. Why would she do that? After decades of working in schools, Dr. Fawcett realized it was time to spend her days doing what she would rather do more than anything else: write novels. She wanted to show the human dynamic in a school and to point out the nurturing that goes on at so many levels. Her books go beyond the casual view that visitors and volunteers see. They take readers behind closed doors

For those chapters that have been contributing to the World Fellowship Fund either through individual donations or through money-raising chapter projects, it will soon be time for the chapter treasurer to use Form 43 obtained on the DKG website to report the donations to DKG International. All the information required is on the form. The deadline for these reports is February 1. There is no requirement to send a report to the state World Fellowship chair in 2013. In 2014, when your chapter is again ready to send a contribution to the World Fellowship Fund, in addition to using Form 43, the chapter treasurer or chapter presi-dent will use Form 42, the Biennial World Fellowship Report, to report her chapter’s activity over the two-year period to the state World Fellowship chair in 2014. There was outstanding participation in the World Fellowship program during the last biennium and we look forward to the same during this biennium. This fund is the sole basis for the scholarships (aka fellowships) awarded to deserving women through-out the world to do graduate work in either the United States or Canada. Continued from Page 6 where principals, teachers, students and parents face sensitive issues that bring out very human emotions. First, came “Honor in the Heart,” which introduces Poore Pond School and the main characters. It depicts their back-grounds, including the “life wounds that affect our values and behavior” (author’s words). In these early pages, the princi-pal's dark past comes back to haunt her. The second novel, “Honor Me Honor You,” adds new problems and new char-acters to the plot, including a student vic-tim of a parent with Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome. It was selected by the Independent Book Publishing Profession-al Group as a finalist in the 2008 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Program. The recently release third novel, “Honor and Grace,” extends the plot, brings resolution to the characters’ dilem-mas and completes the trilogy;; it is the winner of the book award. During the Convention, Dr. Fawcett will offer a workshop on her writing and publishing adventure and the unforeseen appeal of this story of a fictional school. She will offer her books for sale at spe-cial conference rates and will proudly sign them.

Committed to service projects, Rho chap-ter took advantage of the holidays as a

special time for giving. This chapter do-nated over 100 toiletries to City Mis-sion’s Laura’s House, a women’s shelter. This Cleveland chapter also donated over 50 gifts to 25 children from the Children Who Witness Violence county program. This is the second year Rho has collaborated with two other organizations assisting with this project. Each member acted as a Secret Santa to a child ful-filling two requests from the child’s wish list. Brenda Dantzler, program coordina-tor, secured and delivered the presents to the families. This is the second of four service projects Rho has committed to for 2012–2013. Charlene Miller, Rho President

Dues collection is one of the least favorite responsibilities of chapter treasurers and finance committee members. As state treasurer, I would like to “tip my hat” to the majority of the chapter treasurers who sent in dues and forms by November 12. Many treasurers have asked for help in collecting dues. Below are a few tips for dues collection. Your suggestions are always welcome.

Begin collecting in the spring Give members an option to pay in installments Offer an incentive for paying dues by a specific date Designate proceeds from a fund-raiser to offset dues

As of December 29, 2012, Alpha Delta State has 4,248 active members and 505 reserve members. Diana Haskell, State Treasurer
