  • 2014 is the tenth anniversaryof the establishment of TyndallNational Institute, and ten yearslater we see a remarkable transforma-tion. The Institute was created by theDepartment of Jobs, Enterprise andInnovation (DJEI) together with ScienceFoundation Ireland and University CollegeCork (UCC) by bringing together theInformation and Communications Tech-nology (ICT) research strengths in UCC,Cork Institute of Technology and theNational Microelectronics ResearchCentre (NMRC) to better serve Irishindustry and academia.

    Tyndall is indeed playing a key role as adriver of Irelands growing international

    scientic reputation, through its globally competitive ICTresearch. We are proud that Tyndall is an Institute thatconsistently punches well above its weight in terms ofthe quality of its workforce, the results it achieves, andthe accolades and prestigious international awards re-ceived both from industry and from the research com-munity.

    As the Irish economy emerges from recession, it isimportant to evaluate Tyndalls contribution and impactin economic terms. In support of Enterprise IrelandTyndall aids the growth of Irish Small and MediumEnterprises (SMEs), by giving them access to its state-of-the-art facilities, but just as importantly, to its oftenunparalleled expertise in niche technology areas.Central to the success of these relationships is theestablishment of close and trusted partnerships.

    The Institute also supports a range of Irish multi-nationalcompanies by offering access to expertise, key stafftraining in semiconductor fabrication, and the oppor-tunity to have on-site research incubators includingresearchers-in-residence at Tyndall.

    Tyndall also offers valuable support to the IDA in itsquest to attract more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) toIreland. The Institute was an important factor in thedecision making processes of many international multi-nationals such as UTRC and Hittite when consideringa move to Ireland, and can therefore take appropriatecredit for the creation of related new Irish jobs. In addi-tion, Tyndall is increasingly focusing on new ICT-ledresearch opportunities for the medtech sector, andis becoming an important contributor in attractingnew FDI and further embedding existing medtechcompanies in Ireland.

    Tyndall provides important support for start-up compa-nies and during 2013 there were 9 such companiessupported by Tyndall, building businesses around ourtechnologies and taking advantage of the expertise andinfrastructure at Tyndall.

    The research infrastructure has expanded greatly in thepast ten years with the addition of a new state-of-the-art research building with 5,500 m2 of clean room andshared laboratory space, a new conference centreand 7,000 m2 of new office, labs and general space.Over 130 high quality postgraduates are currently intraining and during the course of 2013 Tyndall gradu-ated 31 new PhDs, many of whom go on to work inIrish industry.

    2013 saw significant momentum build in each ofthe four national centres within Tyndall: The IERC (Inter-national Energy Research Centre), CCAN (CollaborativeCentre for Applied Nanotechnology), MCCI (Microelec-tronic Circuits Centre Ireland) and IPIC (Irish PhotonicIntegration Centre). These Centres have dramaticallyincreased the ability of the Irish research community tosupport industry in key areas.

    2013 also marked the first year at the helm for CEO,Dr. Kieran Drain, who is providing strong leadership forthe next phase of Tyndalls development. He has alreadyput in place an ambitious 5-year strategic businessplan, providing a confidence-building focused frame-work for future economic impact.

    2013 was a year of impressive achievements forTyndall, as attested to by the results and positivefeedback that fill the pages of this annual report.

    Finally, I would like to recognise the contributions of theTyndall Board. This Board has strength in all aspectsof innovation, from basic research through develop-ment, government policy and venture capital and hasbeen hugely important in guiding the development ofthe Institute. My term as Chairman will end in October2014, and I would like to express my sincere thanks toall the Board members, past and present, for theirvaluable service to Tyndall. It has really been a wonderfuljourney seeing the early development of this importantInstitute, and I look forward to watching its continueddevelopment and international impact over many yearsto come.

  • 2 013 was an exciting year for Tyndall andwith the breakthroughs and progress made,together with our enhanced capabilities, weexpect 2014 to be even better.

    A primary focus of my first year as CEO has been thecompletion of a new 5-year strategic plan for theInstitute. We have set out a clear strategy to deriveeconomic impact from research excellence. The planis focused on generating employment and buildingcapacity within the technology space across Ireland.An implementation scorecard has been developed,to measure Impact from Excellence, and detailedplanning is in place for our first sector strategy (ICT forHealth).

    Tyndalls organisation structure has been adjusted tosupport the delivery of our ambitious new plan and weare actively engaged in recruiting for key new leadershippositions.

    Building on our success in securing the SFI-fundedIrish Photonic Integration Centre, Tyndall competed ina number of centre bids, as part of the 2013/2014 call.

    Tyndalls world-class reputation in photonics was furtherunderpinned when we teamed up with EU ePIXfab, asilicon photonics initiative with partners including IMEC,CEA-LETI and Fraunhofer to provide advanced opticalpackaging technology. We also partnered with MOSIS,a US-based silicon IC foundry service, to supply solu-tions for a range of telecommunications and healthcareapplications.

    Great strides were made within the Health sector during2013, ICT for Health now accounts for over 15% of ouractivity. Two global medtech companies, Lake RegionMedical and Boston Scientific, now have researchers inresidence at Tyndall, with active research programmesunderway.

    By the end of 2013 Tyndalls participation in 7th EUFramework Programmes rose to 90 projects, 26 asco-ordinator, drawing down 38m to Tyndall and 10mfor SMEs, representing a two-fold increase over FP6.Programme officer resources are now in place to sup-port our goal to significantly grow our impact in the newHorizon 2020 programme.

    Many exciting materials science advances were madethroughout the year. The prestigious Nature PhysicsJournal published Professor Steven Fahys work onhow atoms vibrate and change when hit with intensebursts of light. Tyndall launched a new laboratory forresearch and advanced teaching of radio frequencyintegrated circuits for high-speed wireless data com-munications and contactless sensors, with sponsorshipsupport from Agilent Technologies.

    A number of new strategic partnershipswere entered into, including an MOUwith PCH International to support newhigh-tech start-ups, and an MOUwith Telecommunications Softwareand Systems Group to combinetheir software skills with our hard-ware strengths. Our partnershipswith Polytechnic University ofTurin and Cork Institute ofTechnology (CIT) werefurther strengthenedto foster researchand staff / studentexchanges.

  • 4Tyndall continued as a national gateway institution forICT research, with an impressive range of novel devicesfabricated during 2013, under the SFI-funded NationalAccess Programme (NAP).

    Since 2005 NAP has funded access to Tyndall forresearchers from all third level institutions on the islandof Ireland. This programme will become a fee basedmodel of access from 2014.

    Tyndalls hosted technology centres IERC, MCCI andCCAN all expanded, with industry membership exceed-ing 45 companies. The Centres, supported by EnterpriseIreland and IDA are delivering on ambitious industry-ledprogramm
