from the STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

The Stewardship Council’s mission is: As grateful servants of God’s love, we seek to help our parish community discover their gifts from God that we share with one another for the common good.

The council spent the majority of its meeting planning the Stewardship Fair for this spring. This fair seeks to encourage parishioners to share their time and talent with the various ministry teams that plan the activities that further our parish vision.

The Spring Stewardship & Ministry Fair will begin on the weekend of May 9\10 and continue through the weekend of Pentecost (May 30/31). Not surprisingly, the theme for this year’s fair is “Under Construc-tion”! Due to our limited space, all sign-up lists will be posted in the gathering area!

from the PASTORAL COUNCIL

Our Pastoral Council did not meet in April. In May we will be taking part in a meeting of the Pastoral Councils from the 8 parishes that make up

the Livingston County Vicariate. Each council is asked to bring a statement of two areas the council mem-bers think their parish does well; and one area their council would like to improve.

Our council generated a long list of ideas, but settled on two we do exceptionally well. (1) We are a very warm and welcoming parish and (2) we have very fine, uplifting Liturgies. As a parish we would like to do a better job at reaching out to those who are less committed to the practice of our Catholic faith.

In our May meeting we will discuss the ideas we bring back from the regional gathering. We will also continue work on the further development of our Building and Grounds Usage Policy and the policies that will govern our columbaria (The Resurrection Tower and the Shrine of the Cross.)

What a nice time of the year! Spring is clearly upon us with some flowers blooming, warmer weather, the buzzing of bees, First Communion celebrations, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day weekend. The end of school is fast approaching and for some that means graduation! Mark your calendars now for our High School Graduation Liturgy and Breakfast. We will celebrate your accomplishment during the 9am liturgy on Sunday, June 7, followed by a breakfast in your honor. It will be our last gathering in the current social hall.

As in the years past, we have not met on Mothers Day so you can celebrate the day into the evening with your mom and family. We will not meet Sunday evening until May 17 and then Faith Fuel on Thurs-day evening, May 28. Congratulations to Maggie Pence who for the past couple years has become a big part of our youth group commu-nity. She accepted a job in Chicago last month to work with Red Bull in their advertising department. She will be missed but we are happy for her success. She has left, but is not gone! She will visit during the summer and then join us again in November for the NCYC trip. Good luck Maggie!!

If you have not already checked out the new website, you should! It is awesome! You can download paperwork for upcoming events, click on the NCYC tab and get all the important information you need; you can check out our Ministry Schedule and mark your calendars and you can contact me via e-mail right there on the site. I intend to make good use of this site so be sure to save the site in your internet favor-ites.

I hope and pray that you all would have a wonderful spring and Easter season! I hope the joy of Easter Sunday is still alive in your heart and lives as school comes to an end and we look forward to the summer. God is good!

THE EDGE (for grades 6-8)

I cannot believe it but we are done gathering until the fall. I hope those of you fifth graders who met with us last month had a great experience and are now en-couraged to come in the fall. I am looking forward to seeing the eighth graders move up into our high school program that will start in the fall as well. Happy Spring! Thank you to the EDGE core leader-ship who planned another a great year! Jeannie Herrell, Colleen Schulte, Jill Joyce and Michele Nist! Thank you also to the high school teens who dedicated not only their time, but their leadership talent and energy. The program could not run as successfully as it does without your presence. Thank you all for a great year!

YOUTH GROUP NEWS from Margaret Callaghan

MAGDALEN’S LITTLE PEOPLE from Kathie Anderer

Our last month of preschool will be full of fun times and making memories. The fire truck will be paying us a visit this month and we will also be going to Bordines Nursery. What fun!

We will also have our Mother’s Day Tea. It is always so nice to have our moms come in and spend that special time with us. We are busy working on some special sur-prises. For the first time we will be having a special time for our dads. Father’s Day isn’t until June… but we are going to celebrate early this year. We are having “Doughnuts with Daddy” and will have our dads stop in for a special visit on their way to work.

Spring feels GREAT! It was a long hard winter and it feels so good to be in our short sleeves again!!

We are busy working on next year’s class lists. We still have a few openings available for next year (especially for 3 year olds). If you or someone you know, needs a preschool next fall… please stop by for a visit and fill out an application.

It has been another wonderful year. We have really enjoyed being here at St. Mary Magdalen. Everyone is so warm and friendly and so supportive. It will be hard to say good bye to all of our little friends who will be going on to Kindergarten. We hope that we have sent them off with a strong foundation for their upcoming school years. We will start the new school year off in our new rooms. That is so exciting and fun to look forward to. Thanks for the memories!! Have a wonderful summer.

We would LOVE to have you join us!

COUNCIL COMMENDATIONS

The Council commends all those in the Family Program and the following individuals who have worked tirelessly at Gleaners Community Food Bank: Karen McNally, Patti Conahan, Betty Prise, Mary Jo Parsons, Carol McGrath, Joe Martinez, Vanessa Reineke, Betty Miller, Joe & Sally Bue-nas, Bob & Claudia Sexton and Kym Sulkowski.

The Council also commends all of the wonderful folks who made Holy Week so special and mean-ingful for our parish:

The Seder Meal was so meaningful and special thanks to all who set up, baked, and all who took part in the special Seder meal.

The Teens, under the direction of Richard Switzer, made the Passion a very powerful and meaningful portrayal on Good Friday evening. Thanks to all who took time and made this a priority during Holy Week.

The Choir was magnificent and made the Liturgies come alive. Thanks for your hours of rehearsing, the new instruments, and your gorgeous voices.

The Art and Environment Team spent countless hours throughout Holy Week preparing things and transforming our space for the different Liturgies. Thanks for making our environment so beautiful!

THANKS AND PRAISE from Sister Maryetta Churches, OP

Our thanks and praise goes out to Maggie Pence for all her marvelous work with the teens. Maggie was once a member of the teen group and grew into a wonderful leader and model for our teens. Maggie has accepted a job in Chicago and left to launch her new career. We wish her bless-ings as she grows to new life and new hope!

We also give thanks and praise to Savanna Alfanos, Brendan and Julie Lindberg and Rick and Sandi Phillips for cutting and serving all the deli-cious cakes at the Easter Vigil reception and for helping to clean up afterwards. Thanks for every-thing you did!

Thanks to all those who donated tasty cookies for the Easter Vigil reception. Your generosity made the reception very special.

Thanks to Mary Ansbro for organizing the youth and sorting the Easter Vigil Candles. Great job, Mary!

WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR HOME BLESSED? The Evangelization Team is planning Home &

Apartment Blessings. The scheduled dates are occur-ring from spring until late fall. Since the blessings will be done with a cluster of homes, we are seeking hosts to provide for a gathering of 4-6 families, couples or\and individuals. The blessings will conclude with a potluck meal or dessert at the host home to become better acquainted. The blessings will be led by Father Dave or one of the deacons.

It does not matter if you rent or own or even had your home blessed years ago -- you may have it blessed again. See the sign up sheet in the gathering area or contact Sr. Joyce if you are interested in host-ing, or coordinating with an E-Team member, the home blessings in your neighborhood.

YOUR WHOLE LIFE: NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

We have begun our 12-week sessions of Your Whole Life: The 3-D Program (Diet, Discipleship, Disci-pline). Check in times are Mondays, 1- 2:30 pm in the Adult Formation Room and Tuesdays, 7 – 8:30 pm in Room # 5. We are using a new book in the series “Open Your Heart” (optional) which costs $17. We will be checking in, praying, sharing, and then walking. Newcomers are always welcomed!

OF FAITH & SERVICE from Sr. Joyce Hoile, OSF For four weekends there will be the opportunity to sign up for the planning ministry teams of our parish. The members of these teams make a one year commitment to provide direction for our parish. See pages 7-8 for descriptions of the ministries.

THE GIFT OF NEW LIFE from Diane Kubus

Spring is finally here and we can see the new life in the world around us. What has long been brown and gray is turning green and new growth is sprouting from the earth and budding on the trees. Following the Feast of Pentecost (May 31), we begin the longest season on the church calendar, through summer and into fall. It’s the green season called ordinary time and its theme is “growth”. Until then we continue to celebrate new life; the resur-rection of the Lord for the fifty days of the Easter season. Through the gift of Christ Himself in the Eucharist we receive into our bodies the very power of

His resurrection and His life. How awesome the mystery! God abides in us and is continually in relation-ship with us. He constantly fills us with his Spirit, giving us new life again and again. Now we continue to ponder the Gift and ask what it means for us. We know that the Holy Spirit is at work in us and our lives can truly be transformed. We can live with hope and grow in grace, strength, courage, and virtue. And be-cause of this we can share this gift of new life with others.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults ( R.C.I.A. ) We share what we have experienced; what we have come to know and believe with those who are seeking Christ and the gift of His life. We are cur-rently meeting with 4 adults in the process.

People come seeking God. Even more than that, they come seeking life, to live as a disciple of Christ. Through their experience of “community and prayer” in our parish, we share that gift of life with them. If you would like to help serve those who come seeking, and are a Confirmed and registered mem-ber of the parish, you may do so in a variety of ways.

You may be called to be a SPONSOR, a companion and friend who walks with them on the journey, attends sessions with them and shares the gift of faith.

You might be a HOSPITALITY minister by serving refreshments and making them feel at home and a part of our community.

There are also those who help plan and participate in the RETREATS. These are times of more in-tense preparation, reflection and prayer that mark the periods of initiation formation.

There are many ways through which you might share the gift of God’s life with others. The ministry of R.C.I.A. is one of them. If you are interested and would like more information, please call me in the par-ish office (810) 229-8624 ext. 28.

CHARITY & JUSTICE from Lisa Klein

TIME FOR SPRING CLEANING! You are invited to help the society of St. Vincent de Paul by donating clothing items, including shoes/boots. Our spring clothing drive is scheduled for the weekend of May 9/10. There will be a pod in the church parking lot to place your donated items.

MOTHERS DAY CARNATION SALE: There will be carnations for sale in the gathering area the weekend of May 9/10th. The Mothers’ Day carnation sale will benefit Right to Life of Livingston County.

RELAY FOR LIFE: Come join our Relay for Life team! You can participate by joining us Friday, May 15 at 7 pm and anytime through Saturday, May 16, til 7 pm. Look for our “Helping Hands for a Cure” team on the field. It’s not too late to purchase a luminaria bag in memory of a loved one lost to cancer or to honor a survivor. The bags will illu-minate the track during the Ceremony of Hope. Thanks to all who have helped to make this event a success.

PREGNANCY HELPLINE: We will collect baby items in the gathering area June 6 - 21.

THE DEACONS BENCH from Dave Scharf

As we move toward the end of the years activities, let us see how we did last year. Over the year we had the clothing drive (clothe the naked), then we had the collection at the Mass on Thanksgiving Day (feed the hun-gry), next we had the Christmas Giving Tree (joy to the poor in spirit). Then came the Senior Easter Tree (to minister to the homebound, sick and in-firmed), then the REACH project (to house the homeless), “God’s Kitchen” (to feed the hungry), the Political Action Group (to speak for those who have no voice), and, last but not least, the alms box (to give alms to the poor). We could go on naming the other projects we have here, the baby dresser/crib for Pregnancy Help Line, the Right to Life Christmas card sale, Life Chain and the Carnation sale on Mothers day. Of course we still have the weekly food collection for St. Anne’s and Shared Harvest Food Pantry/Gleaners. We also have folks who minister to the homebound, the hospi-tals, the nursing homes, the jail inmates and the migrant camps.

I know there are some that I have missed but I think you get the picture. We do, and have done, a lot all throughout the year. However, with the end of the Religious Ed and the school year fast approaching we MUST remem-ber, as Christ taught us at his anointing at Bethany ". . . You will always have poor people with you, but you will not always have me." Jn 12:7-8

To make my point, I leave you with this story. “The famous French novelist and dramatist, Tristan Bernard, often had money problems. Still, he could never pass up a beggar. One fellow took advantage of Bernard, timing his visits outside Bernard's home to the writer's scheduled coming and going. Bernard never confronted him. One day this beggar was stunned to see Bernard pull from his wallet a rather large bill. Giving it to the beaming man, Bernard said, "We're going on vacation tomorrow. Here's a two-month supply in advance. You've a right to a vacation, too."

Please don’t forget the hungry, homeless, the voiceless and the poor while you are on vacation this year.

THE OTHER BENCH

from Jim Chevalier

With this economic down-turn, the more I read about it and the more I watch the TV programs regarding what’s going on in Washington, the more confused I get. There are times when I wonder where God is in all this!

Because of our free will, God will never directly interfere; He wants US to resolve this economic cri-sis, He wants us to trust one another, to love one another, to believe in our own ability to conduct our lives in accordance with His will. As we know, “With God, all things are possible.” This Easter Season we need to “stay the course” by keeping the Faith, praying often, and taking one day at a time, with a positive atti-tude.

PAPER RECYCLING AT MARY MAGDALEN!

Just in case you haven’t noticed there are two green

and yellow recycling bins near the barn to collect

your paper for recycling! We invite everyone to bring

unsorted, clean newspapers, magazines, office and

school papers, shopping catalogues, shiny paper,

mail, envelopes, thin cardboard. (Please NO phone

books or hard bound books.) The pickup truck

comes every 2 weeks to weigh the contents and

credit us accordingly. We use the income from this

project to assist those in need in our area!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING - FOR GOD'S SAKE?

The following are descriptions of the various ministries which advance our efforts to fulfill our Vision. Beginning the weekend of May 9/10, parishioners are invited to make a one year commitment to work with any of these ministry teams.

PASTORAL COUNCIL

On Pentecost Sunday (May 31), four of our registered and Confirmed members will be chosen by lot to serve on the Pastoral Council. The Council works with our pastor and the various ministry teams to guide our parish according to our Vision Statement. Specifically, council members seek to grow through their own continuing education. Secondly, we send members as liaisons to each of the ministry teams. Thirdly, we create opportunities for all our parishioners and ministry teams to participate in discerning the needs of the parish and in the setting of goals and projects to fulfill these needs. Volunteers for this min-istry make a three-year commitment.

STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

The Stewardship Council is composed of parishioners committed to the Biblical concept of stew-ardship. They recognize that our time, our gifts, our talents and our treasure ultimately comes from God, and they thank the Lord by returning to God, some of what they have received. More importantly, the Stewardship Team is committed to helping all of our parishioners to become good stewards. Members who volunteer for this ministry council are asked to make a three-year com-mitment.

SIGN UP for a ONE-YEAR COMMITMENT

COMMUNITY LIFE TEAM

In a sense, this ministry team might be called the ministry of fun and frolic! This team is committed to enhancing the social and communal life of the parish through an assortment of gatherings throughout the year, including: the September Picnic, as well as fun events for families and adults. Those who join this ministry are asked to make a one-year commitment.

ADULT FORMATION TEAM

This team is composed of men and women who are interested in sharing their faith. No experience is necessary! The aim of the team is to continue to build an inviting, welcoming atmosphere in our commu-nity for all adults and to reach out to those who have no religious affiliation of their own and to the inac-tive or alienated Catholics in our area. We would especially welcome those who have a talent for jour-nalism, marketing or public relations, who could assist us with creative ways to spread the "Good News". This ministry team meets about eight times during the school year. Volunteers for this ministry make a one -year commitment to it.

RELIGIOUS FORMATION TEAM

The Formation Ministry Team looks for ways to develop communication between the parish, youth and our families. We are committed to embracing our children as our younger brothers and sisters in Christ. Our mission is to support a strong Religious Education program and a Youth Group that will excite our youth into learning and sharing our faith fully. This ministry team meets once a month, usually on the third Monday. We encourage you to make this one-year commitment to in-vest in the faith formation of our youth!

SIGN UP BEGINS MAY 9/10!

SIGN UP for a ONE-YEAR COMMITMENT

PARISH WELLNESS TEAM

This is a ministry team of health care professionals and other caring, service oriented people whose con-cern is the care and well being of our parishioners. They coordinate services to those need (food, trans-portation, light housework, etc). They also share their knowledge with the community in a variety of in-formational and service programs geared to our better health. Those who join this ministry make a one -year commitment to this ministry.

CHARITY & JUSTICE TEAM

The Charity & Justice Ministry Team plans and coordinates our parish's effort to reach out to those in need by providing assistance. Some of their many tasks are to bring food to the needy, work with the homeless shelter, collect gifts at holiday time and collect clothes for needy infants. They also are charged with the task of working to help the needy help themselves. This Ministry Team has about 10 meetings a year (on the second Tuesday of the month). Members who volunteer for this ministry make a commitment for one year.

PROPERTIES TEAM

This is a hands-on ministry team. The Properties Team is concerned with the maintenance, up-keep, safety and continuing development of our parish buildings and property. The efforts of this team involve our maintenance personnel. Special projects require the recruitment and organiza-tion of volunteers or the hiring of contractors. Besides the ongoing work of this group, team mem-bers will meet about 8 times during the year for planning. Those who sign up for this ministry are asked to make a one-year commitment to it.

WORSHIP TEAM

The Worship Ministry Team plans and coordinates the Liturgical celebrations of our parish. Bringing to-gether our Liturgical ministries, pastoral musicians and members of the Art & Environment team, they work to plan and coordinate prayerful celebrations of the Liturgy. They also strive to enrich our people's understanding of the Mass. This Ministry Team has about 10 meetings a year (on the first Wednesday of the month) and does additional work in between the meetings. Members who volunteer for this minis-try are asked to make a commitment for one year.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION - CATECHISTS & AIDES

Our Vision commits us to embrace our children as our younger brothers and sisters in Christ. We envi-sion a strong religious education program that will excite our youth into learning and sharing with us fully. St. Mary Magdalen has a dynamic program dedicated to this vision. Many parishioners volunteer to as-sist in our program but many more catechists and aides are needed. Volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment.

TECHNOLOGY TEAM

Our Technology Team reviews the technology (hardware and software) used in our parish offices. They recommend and install appropriate updates as needed. This team also oversees and up-dates our parish website. Volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment to this ministry.
