The Sunday after Thanksgiv-ing (November 29th) is the First Sunday of Advent. Advent begins a new liturgical year. There will be new

Breaking Bread issues in the pews. We will begin using Cycle C readings at our Sunday Masses and Cycle 1 readings at our weekday Masses. But Advent is more than the time of these changes. It is a season of preparation.

In one sense Advent is a season of three themes intertwined. The first theme is that of a penitential spirit, preparing our souls to receive Jesus worthily at Christmas; the second is liturgical, preparing our whole being for the final coming of Jesus; and the third is a season of joy as we look forward to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

The exact time when the season of Advent came to be celebrated is not precisely known. Of course, it was not in practice before the celebration of the Na-tivity and Christmastide. The earliest evidence shows that the feast of the Nativity of Our Lord was established within the latter part of the fourth century. There are homilies from the fifth century that discuss preparation in a general sense, but do not indicate an official liturgical season.

In 590 it was determined that Mondays, Wednes-days, and Fridays, from November 11 until the Nativity would be offered according to the Latin rite. This and other traditions, such as fasting, show that the period of time known as Advent was more penitential (similar to Lent) than the liturgical season as we know it today.

The themes and traditions of the Advent season have evolved throughout the history of the liturgical sea-son. As mentioned, the early Advent season was mainly penitential, similar to the theme of the Lenten season. Today a penitential theme still exists, but it is not as intense as in the seventh century. Also, it is blended with the theme of prayerful, spiri-tual preparation for the second and final coming of the Lord, as well as the joyful preparation for the annual festive remembrance of the Incarnation and Christ's birth. Advent celebration and traditions can vary from place to place, influenced by culture. However, some traditions have come to be common

throughout the Catholic Church.

The Advent wreath is likely the most popular tradi-tion, and wreaths are typically present in both the parish church and in the home. It is a more recent tradition, with the modern Advent wreath emerging in Germany and spreading throughout Europe and beyond in the 1930's. It is often circular, representing God's eternity, and it includes 4 candles - one for each Sunday of Advent. Many families have a wreath in their home and will light the candles each Sunday and say Advent prayers together.

The Jesse Tree is also a popular Advent tradition. A Jesse Tree, named for the father of David, is a tree that is decorated gradually throughout Advent with symbols or pictures of biblical persons associated with the gradual coming of the Messiah, Christ. This includes, among others, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Joseph and Mary.

Today many parishes feature a Jesse Tree in church and decorate it with ornaments representing particular gifts. Families are asked to take an ornament, pur-chase the gift and return it prior to the end of Advent. The gifts will then be donated at Christmas to those in need.

Look for our Advent Wreath and for our Jesse Tree just after Thanksgiving. Let them serve as reminders of our need to prepare ourselves in a penitential way, liturgically, and in a joyful spirit for the coming of Christ at Christmas and at the end of time.

PRE-CHRISTMAS ADULT EDCUATION PROGRAM How much do you know about your Catholic Faith? Many of us may think we know a great deal, especially from the education and training we received years ago. But others may feel that there may be some holes in their actual knowledge of the Faith – we may be familiar with different aspects of the Catholic Faith, but not all. And there are others who feel that they don’t know much at all, or they’ve forgotten most of what they’ve learned.

No matter which category you might find yourself, you will have an opportunity to reinforce what you may have already learned or you may have the opportunity to learn about those things that may be missing in your knowledge of the Catholic Faith. Our Pre-Christmas and Advent adult education program is for everyone.

The title of the program is: The Catholic Faith Explained, in which we will journey through the core teach-ings of the Catholic Church with the goal of knowing the Faith, or knowing it better. During this season before Christmas we will offer the first half of Part I: Knowing the Faith. The program will be offered twice each week in order to try to accommodate any and all who would like to participate.

The five week program will be held Monday afternoons (session A) from 1:00pm until 2:30pm, or on Tuesday evenings (session B) from 6:30pm until 8:00pm.

The topics for the five weeks are:

Advent Novena at the Seminary

Kenrick-Glennon Seminary will host the 2015 Advent Novena during the evenings between Decem-ber 1st and 9th. All parishioners are invited to join our seminarians for these nine evenings of prayer and worship in preparation for Christmas. Each night of the Novena begins at 7:00 p.m. and includes prayer, Scripture, a reflective homily, and hymns led by the seminarian choir. How it works: Gather all your shoes you don’t wear anymore,

rubber band or tie each pair together. Drop them off at our church in the box located by the door of the chapel entrance. The shoes are then collected and they are exported to street vendors in places like Kenya, Haiti, and South America. The street vendors receive valuable shoes, and people without shoes can purchase them for pennies on the dollar. The funds generated from exporting the shoes provide well drilling rigs, water purification systems, repairs for hand pumps, and health and hygiene training. Communities around the world receive the life-saving gift of CLEAN WATER!.
