Reflection

Today, we take a step further to take a “deeper look” at lessons God has been teaching us in the very

little or great things we experience in our lives; lessons that we often do not learn because we look towards the

wrong direction.

The Israelites failed to learn the lessons God had taught them in “their adoption; the glory, the cove-

nants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; . . . and from them, according to the flesh, is the

Christ . . . “ (2nd reading) As a result of this, they could not recognize the savior among them who chose to be

cursed so that they will be blessed. No wonder St. Paul in the second reading was wishing he could repeat the

sacrifice: (be cursed and cut off) if it will help reteach them.

Recognizing God and his lesson requires a deeper look amidst several diverse situations that often be-

cloud our vision to behold him: “Go outside and stand on the mountain . . . the Lord will be passing by . . . a

strong and heavy wind . . . but the Lord was not in the wind. After . . . an earthquake . . . but the Lord was not in

the earthquake. After there was a fire . . . but the Lord was not in the fire. After . . . there was a tiny whispering

sound . . .” (1st reading) The wind, earthquake and fire, like the storm of the Gospel, tend to draw our attention

away from the Lord, thereby causing us to sink like Peter. “ . . . But when he saw how strong the wind was he

became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord save me!’” (Gospel)

The simple lesson Jesus taught Peter was that he should not look away from him to consider the forces

around him. In the same way, God in many experiences of our lives is drawing our attention and teaching us

great lessons. Some of these lessons are embedded in the very insignificant activities and occurrences in our

lives. Others are covered by great and pleasant or unpleasant experiences that may still obscure the message.

To learn the lessons, we must take a deeper look at every situation. We have to look beyond the ordinary to

seek the reason why God wants us to have that experience. The reason or the realization may be in the distant

future. But to identify such lessons today is the only way to appreciate them and dispose ourselves for God’s

purpose for sending them to us. Take a deeper look at one thing you are experiencing right now. Could God be

talking to you through it? God bless you!

1st Reading 1 KGS 19-9A, 11-13A At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD—but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake— but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire— but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Responsorial Psalm PS 85:9,10,11-12,13-14

R. (8) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD — for he proclaims peace. Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of his steps. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

2nd Reading ROM 9:1-5

Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen

Gospel MT 14:22-33

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
