Livingston County appears to be very prosperous, yet within our county over 7,000 people live below the poverty line. Most of these are the working poor, who sur-vive payday to payday. But it takes very little to cause these folks to sink into desperate straits: an unexpected car repair, an illness or other emergency. Every day these peo-ple turn to churches for assistance especially the Salvation Army, all 8 Catholic parishes in the county and several other Christian churches.

At St. Mary Magdalen, we receive calls every day from folks looking for help. Our deacons, Jim Chevalier, Gary Prise and Dave Scharf field these calls and use the money we have available to help them. Non-parishioners are directed to a county-wide, non-denominational group called LOVE, INC (love, in the name of Christ). They inter-view the one making the request to verify the need and avoid duplications. Then we write checks. This adds up to hundreds of dollars a week and several thousand dollars a month.

Where do we get this money? Like many churches in the county, we support LOVE, INC, for their work. We contribute $500 a month from our general fund. The ad-ditional money we give away comes from the money donated to the Alms box located in our gathering area. Our Pastoral Council met in September and finalized the policies that will govern our columbaria which will be located in our Resurrection Tower and at the Shrine of the Cross. These policies can be viewed by going to our parish website and will be given to anyone who reserves a niche or space in the Resurrection Tower or at the Shrine of the Cross. This will begin in November, after the tower is essentially completed and blessed.

We finally had our election for chair (Tom Callaghan) and vice chair (Ken Kuna). As a result of the elections, we shifted some of our ministry team assignments. Mike Lamberjack was assigned to Worship and Mary Beth Rupp will now be the council liaison to Finance Council.

We began our discussion of the ideas we gathered from other parishes in our region last spring. These included a program of marriage enrichment called 8 Great Dates; a Ministry Spotlight; and a directory of ministries & contacts. The last two items we will be a joint effort with the Stewardship Council

The Stewardship Council met near the end of September. We discussed the Fall Ministry Fair which seeks to involve our parishioners in the various task oriented activities of the Ministry Teams. Not surprisingly, the theme for this year’s fair is “Under Construction”! Due to our limited space, the sign up took place in the gathering area!. The fair proposes a large number of possible involvements, even one for “special skills” which is any spe-cial ability that someone may wish to place at the service of the community. Fr. Dave will explain this one more the last weekend of the fair.

The third topic of the council was to improve the welcoming packet we give new parishioners and to work with the Pastoral Council on developing a new Ministry Booklet with a list of contact people for volunteers.

The days are shorter but are brightened by a wash of color. In gar‐

dens and farmlands, the planters hurry to gather in the bounty of

fruits, vegetables and grains. There are fruits and vegetables to be

canned; grain to be milled and other foods to be carefully stored so

that they can last through the long winter. The sheer bounty leads

many to be genuinely grateful. Our modern world has few equivalents. While a few industries may have busy seasons, there is no real "harvest time" for most of us. Perhaps the only thing even remotely similar to a harvest time is April 15. On tax day,

we can truly see how much we have received as income and then we figure out what percentage of it will be given to the government as taxes.

Perhaps it would be better to ask our parishioners to look at their financial stewardship in April rather than Octo-ber. But real stewards are not motivated by a law like tax payers. Real stewards are motivated by gratitude and a genuine desire to return to God a portion of what has been received. So during harvest time, we are asked to look again at how much we have received and how much of that is shared with others for the love of God..

The Scriptures speak of returning to God a tithe, a tenth of all the time, talent and treasure that has been re-ceived. As Catholics, we define the ideal of a tithe as giving 5% to the Church and donating the other 5% to worthwhile charities.

The December packet of stewardship envelopes begins with a commitment card which helps our Finance Council to budget for the coming year. But more importantly it is a statement of what will be returned to God in thanks for all we have received.

While most use weekly envelopes, many parishioners at St. Mary Magdalen now make their offering electronically. The electronic transfer makes your commitment automatically each month. If you would like to use this option, check the box on the commitment card.

RELIGIOUS FORMATION from Mary Mahar

What a difference a year makes! Last year we were wondering how the new building would be laid out, what it would look like, would it ever be ready for classes, and how would it all come together! Well, if you have not seen it, make it a point to walk through the new formation wing! There are 14 new rooms! Four of these new rooms are dedicated to our youngest youth – with Room 6 being used as a temporary nursery until the bigger and better nurs-ery is built in the old social hall next to the old youth room! Each of the formation rooms is so nice! We are still trying to come together by fitting in all the things we use for formation and for preschool - things that had been stored in the barn, basement, Leo’s back room, the electrical room, the nursery closet, the office workroom, and my office. It is definitely taking some doing to fit it into the new space! Stasia and I have had so much help; we could never have gotten this far on our own! However, I have not completed the move back into my office yet; I still have boxes all over!

We started with one week of classes and then a week off to see and work out any glitches. With 4:45-6:15 as our new time for our early session, we have an overlapping of traffic. The new pick-up area will be the area now marked for handi-cap parking the big area in the parking lot. We will have 1 lane drop off lane with no standing in the circular drive when work there is completed. Please be patient and be sure to watch for little ones in the parking lot as you come and go and we get used to the new space.

I would like to thank our Lead Catechists for this year. They have had quite a lot to do in training this year especially with the new space! I know that many of our families are facing difficult times in your family life. If you have not registered for classes due to financial reasons, please call me.

MAGDALEN’S LITTLE PEOPLE from Kathie Anderer

We did it! Moved into our beautiful new classrooms and started right on schedule. There were a few glitches to work through but with each day things get better and better. Our school year started with Open House Sunday on September 13. We are up and ready to learn and make new friends. Monday, September 14 marked the beginning of the new school year. The children arrived to meet their new teachers and classmates with great antici-pation. The teachers spent many hours moving things into the classrooms and decorating to create a cheerful and colorful welcoming environment for the new students to enjoy.

We are fortunate to have our dedicated staff. Mrs. Wende Cofield and Mrs. Ann Donohue are our teachers for the 3’s and young 4’s and Mrs. Sue Abraham and Mrs. Kathy Riccardi are our teachers for the 4’s and “early 5’s”.

October will be full of new adventures. We will have our pictures taken October 1& 2. We have our first field trip planned to the apple orchard/pumpkin patch at Spicers Orchard in Hartland on October 6 and 7. We get to go to the pumpkin patch and pick out a pumpkin to take home and pick an apple off the tree in the orchard. At the end of the month we will cele-brate Halloween with a party.

It was a beautiful summer but it’s great to be back. There is fall in the air and with that, all of the beautiful signs of the season to enjoy and explore.

Looking forward to another fun filled school year! Thanks for having us!

from Margaret Callaghan

What a month September was with all the moving and starting of school and religious ed classes and the start up of youth group again! Throw into that a joint retreat just a few weeks ago and I’d say that’s a pretty busy month.

Looking ahead, the youth continue to stay busy with homecoming dances and Halloween celebrations. This year due to all the construction and the barn being used as a storage place for so many things, we are not doing a haunted barn. We will still help provide something special for the kids in conjunction with the Community Life team and their Trunk and Treat planned for Friday, October 30 from 7-9 pm.

When asked why I do what I do with and for the teens, I am always taken aback. What a gift the youth are to Tommy and me. I am often more moved and touched by their actions, stories and growth than I think sometimes they are. To create a place where the teens can come and be themselves, learn about their faith, and make friends with others that they would not have otherwise had a chance to meet is so rewarding to me! When I was a teenager, I did not have a group like the youth do here nor did I have the opportunities for retreat experiences, service trips or National Confer-

ence’s like the teens do here. To witness growth, to see friendships develop and to be a part of change in a community devastated by a natural disaster is why I do what I do; it’s why I meet with them once week and plan retreats and travel long hours on the bus with them. What is something you do that God has blessed your life with that gives you the opportunity to grow and help others?

Early next month on November 1, we will be traveling to Lansing for the diocesan wide Jamboree. We will R.O.C.K. the house with our faith, praise and love for one another. What does that stand for you ask? Rely On Christ the King!! We will gather with about 1,000 teens from around the diocese for a day full of fun, faith, friendships and of course food. Contact me at my new email address [email protected]. (I am slowly changing my e-mail).

THE EDGE for 6, 7 & 8 graders

So far we have met just once. Our October meetings are Monday the 12th and in the works is a night out to a local corn maze for some fall time fun on the 26th. Keep watch in the bulletin for more details and take a look at the website as well for more about EDGE and the dates for the year.

It is great to be back and getting settled in the new space. This year we have many new teen leaders who once were a part of EDGE and who are now leaders! How awesome to see and witness their growth in leadership skills and ability. If you would like to contact me, you can reach me at my new address [email protected]. As I have mentioned in the bulletin, I am slowly changing my e-mail.

ON THE JOURNEY from Diane Kubus

We continue to invite people to Faith Inquiry, the first phase of the process of becoming Catholic. Anyone who is thinking about becoming Catholic or is interested in finding out more about the Catholic faith is wel-come. Our sessions are on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm. We also provide a children’s session (for children 7 years of age and older) on Tuesday eve-nings as well. Call me in the office if you are interested. (810)229-8624 ext. 128

Our inquirers come with their questions. They express concerns and we share stories. Inquiry helps us to recognize God’s activity in our lives. We become more aware of God’s presence and how God is intimately involved in our lives. When we do this, we realize that being “in relationship with God” makes a huge difference and, when we want to discover more, and we desire to deepen our relationship with God, we find that life changes. We turn our attention to God more often and we pray, recognizing that prayer is essential. There’s a change in our attitudes and even in our actions. This may be the first time some of the inquirers experi-ence this in their life, but we have all experienced this -- Inquirers are embarking on a journey that we are all on... this never ending, always changing, often surprising, journey of faith! Blessings on the journey!

Have you considered becoming Catholic? Have you been attending Mass and have not been able to receive the Eucharist with your family because you are not Catholic? Have you been baptized in another Christian faith but feel a

sense of belonging in the Catholic Church? Come to Inquiry and find out more about what it means to be Catholic or call me in the parish office for more information. (810) 229-8624 ext. 128

Taizé PrayerTaizé PrayerTaizé Prayer Taize prayer consists of songs, psalms, Scripture, the Lord's Prayer, intercessions, and periods of silence. The songs are of repetitive structures, with singable melodic units that can be readily memorized by everybody... It is the Word of God set to music -- its constant gentle repetitive quality allows deep contemplation and prayer on the sentiments that it expresses. The next Taizé Service is Friday, October 23 at 8pm in our new Day Chapel.

THE OTHER BENCH THE OTHER BENCH THE OTHER BENCH from Jim Chevalier

We all know that dying is part of living; we do not believe that death is the end of our life. But most of us do not want to think about death until it’s too late to do anything about it, even though dying is woven into the very fiber of our life from the very beginning. Faith reassures us that we need not fear death but at the same time, because we are hu-man, we can still be anxious about the circumstances of our death. Not knowing what the future may hold, we do not want to give up all the opportunities and gifts our lives hold for us. When it is time for us to leave this world, it is fitting that we should want to die in a way that is meaningful, even beautiful and inspiring, for us and for those we love.

In the dying process, there is still a great scope for personal choice and responsibility: How we face the myster-ies of suffering, dying, and death makes a critical difference for us and for our loved ones who wish to offer us compas-sionate support. As stewards of the gift of life, we see every aspect of life and death as part of a larger picture and part of our ongoing relationship with God. Let us pray to our Lord for a happy death so that when we are called home He will say to us “Welcome Home Good and Faithful Servant.”

AUTUMN PRAYER Lord, we come before you in thanksgiving for the gifts you

beauty you alone can create. We are thankful for the food

you provide in the harvest. You have filled the earth with

your gifts. You have blessed us. We are ever grateful, Lord,

and will never stop singing your praises.

To you be honor and glory forever. Amen.

The DEACONʹS BENCH The DEACONʹS BENCH The DEACONʹS BENCH from Dave Scharf

Religious Ed has begun and our children are learning; so let’s play a little bit of Bible Trivia to see how much we know about Scripture. Remember “The School of Discipleship” is starting up for adults!

Where would your family place if you contemporize the events of Scripture? By putting 19 ahead of each year and "contemporizing" the events, one gets a better sense of the laps of time between these events and their relation-ship to each other. By considering first century events like twentieth century ones chronologically, we can better see the Written Word as the Church's inspired reflection on the interpretation of its experience of Jesus Christ.

Numbers in parentheses are Acts of the Apostles references. Bold face indicates New Testament book.
