OCTOBER 2015

STEWARDSHIP—BUILD MY CHURCH

Regarding Stewardship, when we think of giving our time, we often consider

it to be the same as giving talent. We think that we give our time and our talent when

we volunteer at the parish. In reality, stewardship STARTS when we spend time

with God, deepening our relationship with Him. By talking about prayer instead of time,

we make that distinction very clear. Prayer is absolutely critical in the life

of the individual steward and to the success of an overall parish stewardship effort.

“Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.

In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.”

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Each year the Missouri Catholic Conference holds its annual As-sembly the first Saturday in Oc-tober. This year the Conference

will gather on Saturday, October 3 in Missouri’s State Capitol in Jefferson City. The theme of this year’s Assembly is “The Church in the Modern World – 50 years after the close of Vatican II, what does the Church offer today?”

There will be an outstanding line-up of fifteen en-gaging workshops covering a wide range of issues, including religious liberty, abortion ethics in the Missouri General Assembly, Pope Francis’ Encycli-cal Laudato Si’, race relations, poverty concerns, hospice care.

One of the main speakers includes Bishop John Gaydos of Jefferson City, who will recall his days as a young priest in Rome when the Second Vatican Council concluded. There are many who may recall those days, and many others who have been im-pacted by all that came about in the following years. I’m sure his recollections will bring back some memories.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Lawrence Feingold, a theologian who teaches at Kenrick-Glennon Semi-nary. He is steeped in the teachings of the Church and holds a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. I guarantee that he will hold your attention.

The closing Mass will take place in St. Peter’s Church, located near the Capitol building, at 3:15pm, and will be con-celebrated by all of the Bishops of Missouri.

If you are interested in attending the Annual Assem-bly this year there is an insert in today’s bulletin for your convenience. It lists the schedule and offers a registration form. Registration is easy and should be made early, especially if you need transportation. There will be bus transportation from the Cardinal Rigali Center – just ten minutes away from St. Mary Magdalen.

Please consider taking part in the Missouri Catholic

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Here are two more Saints whose relics we have.

St. Louise de Marillac, D.C. (born August 12, 1591; died March 15, 1660)

Louise de Marillac is best known as the co-founder, along with St. Vincent de Paul, of the Daughters of Charity. Louise was the natural daughter of Louis de Marillac, Lord of Ferrires. Her uncle, Michel de Marillac, was a major figure in the court of Queen Marie de’ Medici. Louise, therefore, grew up amid the affluent society of Paris. Her father died when Louise was twelve, and at the age of 15 she felt drawn to the cloistered life; but was refused admit-tance. She later married and the couple had one son. She was devoted both to her family and to the Ladies of Charity, an organization of wealthy women dedi-cated to assisting persons oppressed by poverty and disease. Although she remained faithful to her hus-band she continued to feel that God was calling her to a community life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Her new spiritual director was Vincent de Paul, whom she met shortly before her husband died. In 1632 Louise made a spiritual retreat. That retreat led her to intensify her ministry with poor and needy per-sons. She communicated her aspiration to Vincent. Together, they brought the Daughters of Charity into existence. She found the help she needed in young, humble, country women who had the energy and proper attitude to deal with people weighted down by destitution and suffering. She led the Company of Daughters until her death. At the time of her death there were 40 houses of the Daughters of Charity in France. Louise de Marillac was beatified by Pope Benedict XV and canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1934. The wax body of Louise, which encloses her bones, lies in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal at 140 Rue du Bac in Paris, France, which, in my opinion, is one of the best places to make a pil-grimage when in France.

St. Maria Goretti (born October 16, 1890; died July 6, 1902)

Maria Goretti is an Italian virgin-martyr, and one of the youngest canonized Saints. Due to increased pov-erty Maria’s family had to move from the eastern side of Italy to the western side. Her father died when she was nine, and the family had to share a house with

another family, the Sereneillis. She took over the household duties while her mother and the rest of her family worked in the fields. One afternoon, Alessandro, the son of the Serenelli family, made sexual advances to her, but when she refused to sub-mit to him, he stabbed her fourteen times. She suc-cumbed to her wounds but forgave Alessandro from her deathbed. He was arrested, convicted, and jailed. After three years he repented, and when eventually released from prison, he visited her mother begging forgiveness, which she granted. He later became a lay brother in a monastery, dying peacefully in 1970. Maria Goretti was beatified in 1947 and canonized in 1950. Her mother attended both ceremonies. She is patron saint of teenage girls, crime victims, and victims of rape.

Parish Assembly Sunday, September 20, 2015

All parishioners are asked to attend the first of two Parish Assemblies dealing with the Parish Planning Process for St. Mary Magdalen Parish. It will take place in the School Hall beginning around noon on that day. Hopefully, we will be able to conclude in less than 1 ½ hours. Every parish in the Archdiocese has been asked by the Archbishop to undertake this process to determine the future of their parish, especially when a priest-pastor is no longer avail-able to that parish. This process provides a unique way of evaluating a parish’s current situation with the future in mind. The input of all of our parishion-ers is of great importance. It gives parishioners an opportunity to determine how their parish will be administered instead of having that imposed from above. More information and materials for the proc-ess will be provided for our parishioners at this first Assembly. Please RSVP to Jeanine in the rectory at 314-352-2111, ext. 5, so that we can have enough materials prepared for each person/family attending.

Vocation Chalice Program We are in need of volunteers to take the traveling Vocation Chalice home for one week and to set aside a time each day to pray for vocations to the priest-hood, permanent diaconate, and consecrated life. A leaflet of prayers for your use will accompany the chalice. If you wish you may keep the leaflet after the chalice is returned at the end of the week.

The first week of this program will begin on Sunday, September 20, 2015. Our parishioner, Rosemary Walsh, has agreed to be the first recipient of the chal-ice. We are pleased that she will be the one to begin the program since the chalice that has been prepared for this purpose was one given to the parish in honor of her late husband, Andrew Walsh, by the Serra Club of St. Louis. Andrew was an active member of the Serra Club and, as all Serrans, devoted to praying for and supporting religious vocations.

Although we already have several people, or families, who have signed up to take the chalice, the weeks of Nov. 8, 15 and Dec. 6, 13, 20, 27 are currently open for any individual or family to request the chalice. If homebound, one of our seminarians, or a volunteer, will be happy to bring the chalice to you and pick it up at the end of the week.

To reserve a week (Sunday through Saturday) please call Fran Voss at 314-352-2111, ext. 4. The chalice will be on display in the sanctuary over the next sev-eral weeks. Please call and reserve a week today. We thank you, in advance, for your prayerful support of our seminarians, priests, professed religious, those in formation, and deacons.
