“Prior to the dance I was

The Homecoming dance took

place October 13 inside of the big gym. In

correlation to the themes of the

homecoming game floats, the dance was

themed “Under the Sea.” The gym was

decked with sea shells, paper fish, bubbles

and two projections of the movie Nemo.

In addition, black clothes and

blue lights decorated the entrance, which

according to senior Taylor Scherer, made

her at first feel as though she had “entered a haunted house

As tradition, the Homecoming king and queen

were crowned during the dance. Literally breaking up the

How does one come to thank

people who support the equality of LGBT

(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) students

at Temescal? Temescal’s very own GSA (Gay

Straight Alliance) Club held what is known

around the nation as Ally Week.

According to the Gay Straight

Education Network, it’s a week “for students

to identify, support and celebrate allies

against anti-LGBT language, bullying or

harassment in America’s schools.” The

national event is usually ran by students

during October 15th to the 19th.

Las Vegas, Spotlight’s On YouBy: Mackenzie Vaughn

PHOTO/ The Lied Library has the capacity to store 1.8 millionvolumes and occupies 300,000 square feet in five stories, ithas 2,500 study spaces.

University of Nevada: Las Vegas is

ranked 12th most popular college in the country.

Aside from being in one of

the nation's biggest party cities,

it is a great college to attend.

If you aren’t quite sure what you want to major

in, don’t worry. UNLV has a great selection of

different subjects you can major in. They range

from nursing, to marriage and family therapy, to

geoscience, and many more. The most popular

majors

are business and marketing.

The university also offers a bunch of different

sports teams. From water polo to table tennis,

rugby to diving, you are sure to find one of your

favorite sports. And if you’re into rodeo, they have

their own rodeo team!

UNLV offers certificate, doctoral, bachelor’s, and

master’s degrees. The average age of students

attending the school is 22 to 23, with 56% of the

students being women, and 44% men. The student

to faculty ratio is 22:1. While the majority of

students attending live in state, 14% live out of

state. The University of Nevada: Las Vegas is not

only a great

school, but a great school to attend.

SAT dates coming up soon,

are you ready?By: Sarah El-Mahmoud

On October 20, many Juniors gave up

their valuable Saturday morning and came to

school at 7:45 a.m. to take the Preliminary

Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). Now that they

have taken the first step, it’s time to get ready for

the SAT.

The SAT, if you don’t know, is a standardized

test used for college admissions in the United

States. It is intended to show how ready students

are ready for college. The test takes three hours

and 45 minutes to complete and costs $50. If you

are college bound, taking the SAT or ACT is

required for all college freshman.

You might wonder what kind of score you

should be aiming for when taking the SAT. The

highest possible score you can get on the test is a

2400. However, getting anything above a 1100 is

an acceptable score. The national average of SAT

scores is a 1500. Each college has a different score

range that they will take depending on its

standards.

There are various ways to get ready for

the SAT besides the PSAT. I would suggest going

on to sat.collegeboard.org for practice questions.

Also, iPhone users should look for the SAT

Question of the Day app which is a good way to

practice for the SAT every single day.

If you just can’t wait to the SAT and

get it over with, there is an upcoming test date on

November

PHOTO/ Students usually buy a SAT study guide, like the oneabove, to help them prepare for the test.

3. Since it’s so close, the fee is $77, and the

deadline to register is as late as October 22. Other

test dates coming up are on December 1 and

January 26.

The SAT is important for your future and I

hope you decide to take it. If you are a Junior you

have an early start, you can start preparing today

so you can get the best score possible, and so you

have more choices when applying for colleges. If

you are a senior, there is still time, don’t forget to

register soon!

STUDENT LIFE

Under the Seaof HomecomingBy: Arielle Tripp

front page | This year’s king

and queen are Devante

Kirkpatrick and Letishia Zuniga.

Both of which are highly

enthusiastic, energetic and

active within the student body

through a variety of activities

ranging from basketball to

drama. The approximate 198

students who attended the

dance were accommodated with

a DJ, indoor game activities and

an outdoor eating area. The

music was enjoyable and easy to

dance to. And despite the dance

floor getting rather warm as the

night progressed, it was an

excellent dance, great theme,

appropriate behavior, and a good

time.

Continued from front page | The

GSA Club held a week long pledging table during

lunch. Where the club had made a poster with “I

Pledge To Be An ALLY.” Students quickly huddled

around the table with interest, and chose

whether to sign the pledge.

I was able to ask GSA Vice-President

Sofia Johnston why she thought it was important

for GSA to have celebrated Ally Week?

“As a GSA we need to show the school

that we are making a change towards equality for

everyone and that it’s okay to support gay rights;

that supporting doesn't make you gay.”

PHOTO/ Heritage and Temescal preparing for the play.Continued from front page | That was when the first of four

interceptions occurred, with Marcus Kirkpartrick getting an interception for

Temescal. Soon after Heritage received the first of their interceptions, scoring

a touchdown on the same offensive drive with 3:57 left in the quarter.

54 seconds after the start of the third quarter Heritage made what

would be their final touchdown of the game, but not the last of their scoring.

Heritage proceeded to get a field goal, ending the point gain for the rest of

the game.

The third quarter finished with Heritage getting a second

interception, though the offensive drive failed. The fourth quarter was

relatively uneventful, with no points being scored, but Heritage managed to

get a third interception, an unusually high amount.

Golf Titans won SBLBy: Marianna Fontana

Last week the Temescal Canyon’s Girl Varsity Golf

Team played at Summerly. The match was crucial to decide

the top four girls that would go to CIF and the TC sophomore

Baylee Barckley made it, coming in first position.

Monday 15th

October was the first

day of SBL preliminary.

At Summerly Temescal

Canyon, Lakeside,

Heritage, and Elsinore

High School brought 25

girls. Temescal brought

six athletes and they

played 18 holes course. The first 13th of them passed on the

second day. Four were from Temescal: Sarah Appleby and

Caylie Taylor, junior Taylor Connor and sophomore Baylee

Barckley.

The second day, Tuesday 16th they played the all-

league. Until the end there was a tie for the first place, but

Baylee broke it with a 20 feet pat and won the match. Besides

Baylee three girls from Elsinore are going to CIF.

The athletes of the team described the course as

long and difficult because of the hills on the sides, but

straightforward and well-known to them, because they

played there several times. They are also proud of their

ended season, in which they collected 12 victories out of 14

matches.

MOVIE REVIEW//That’s not Hermione“The Perks of Being aWallflower”By: Sofia Johnston

PHOTO/ Emma Wtson, Logan Lerman, and EzraMiller in movie poster, feature in the UK.

Let’s face it, high school is

no fun, especially if you’re going into

freshman year with no friends and

your best friend has recently commit

suicide, add the guilt of a family

member’s death and you have “The

Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

Stephen Chbosky’s vibrant

characters come to life in this brilliant

film, with actors like Logan Lerman

(“Percy Jackson and the Olympians”),

Ezra Miller (“We Need to Talk about

Kevin”), and Emma Watson (“Harry

Potter”). Logan Lerman portrays the

awkward and shy freshman, Charlie,

and Ezra Miller captures the hearts of

the audience with his stunning

performance as Sam’s gay step brother,

Patrick.

The most astonishing performance was

Emma Watson as Sam, Charlie’s love

interest and Patrick’s step sister. Sam is

no Hermione Granger, but Watson,

donning a flawless American accent,

nails the role; proving that franchises

do not ruin actors.

Overall, this movie is a definitely a

must see, especially if you read the

book.

Gangnam Style isAmerican’s StyleBy: Alyssa Casey

Continued from front page|

The genre of “Gangnam

Style” is K-Pop which means Korean

pop music coming specifically from

South Korea.

As of September 27, this K-

Pop spectacular has been viewed, on

YouTube, over 295 million times also

making it the most watched K-Pop

video in YouTube history.

What about the song and

video has captured the attention of so

many people worldwide?

The dancing may be a

leading cause for the stardom of the

music video. The dance moves are

easily replicable and are quite enjoyable

to enact.

As Psy told Ellen DeGeneres

and Brittany Spears, “the mindset of

this dance is ‘Dress classy and dance

cheesy’” which seems to be the

winning combo in American

entertainment.

The song proves that we

don’t have to understand the lyrics to

fall in love with the song. With the

catchy, upbeat, let-me-dance mood,

people all over are moving to the beat

and even trying to sing along.

“Gangnam Style” has even

blown the minds of people who don’t

like pop at all with its uniqueness and

comedic qualities.

Whether we laugh at the

absurdity or at Psy himself is

unbeknownst but what is sure is that

it is definitely the trending video for

the month and possible the rest of the

year.

Obama and His Winin Town Hall

By: Sarah Snyder

Continued from front page | Of

course, I have no doubt that President

Obama won this round by a landslide.

The two candidates scraped over many

different topics from education to tax

cuts to energy costs. One of the most

interesting topics though, was exchange

over the terrorist attacks in Libya.

Governor Romney challenged the

President's assertion when he stated that

it was an “act of terror” the day after the

incident occurred.

Obama was effective in answering Mr.

Romney’s criticism, and stated, “was

offensive. We don’t do that.” Romney was

effectively proven wrong by moderator

Candy Crowley when she agreed with

Obama and supported him by stating that

his claim was correct.

The truth is, Romney was out of his

league in this debate. The fact that he

secured his own knock out in the end

from the President by mentioning the

47% issue shows that he just wasn’t in

the right state of mind.

If you are still somehow an undecided

voter looking for the next chance to

determine who you want to vote for, and I

strongly suggest Obama, then you should

tune in on the third and last Presidential

debate that is going to be held on Monday,

October 22 at Lynn University in Boca

Raton, Florida, focusing on foreign policy.

Brianne Harrison, a senior at Temescal

Canyon, shared that the most shocking

part of the presentation was the story

that Nathan told. Nathan was a 16 year

old who started doing drugs at 14 and

now thanks to The Phoenix House has

been clean for two months. In his story

he said that his abusive father witnessed

Nathan being run over by a car and only

walked away.

The other speaker was a 17

year old girl named Jackie. She spoke out

of her experiences with alcohol and

drugs. She too was sent to the Phoenix

House and has now been clean for a

year.

It is no coincidence that this

seminar coincides with Red Ribbon week

at all the elementary schools.
