Roger Ebert – A FarewellBy Hayden Gordon

Film critics around the world

mourned undoubtedly the most famous

critics of all time on April 4th. Roger

Ebert was an expert critic of film, who

began his long career of nitpicking back

in the late 1960’s. His opinion on movies

has been widely respected by moviegoers

since the premiere of his show with

partner Gene Siskel in 1975.

What made Mr. Ebert so special

is that, unlike most duos, he continued

after his partner passed away. He was

never “and Ebert”, he was never the John

Oates to anyone’s Darryl Hall, he was

never just the other guy. He had a

personality, a charisma; but most

importantly he had a passion. That

passion was for film, which he regarded as

art. He and Gene Siskel made careers and

earned international fame as movie

reviewers, something everyone would

want to do.Six and Seven Year OldBodies Recovered FromHoleBy: Sarah Synder

Ume Shootby Danny Rogers

New bands tend to get very little

recognition when they don’t go the extra

mile. Ume Shoot went the extra mile, and

they deserve some recognition. Somebody

in our school was personally handing out

organized rap cd albums called “T.U.F.T.A.F.P.”

I honestly don’t know if this

really a new band, but I sincerely hope so.

Some of the beats definitely sound familiar,

but the singer is definitely new to me. If it

is a new band, they’re local and great.

I have very little info on this

new band/artist. I normally don’t like rap,

but this cd’s enjoyable.

Every song has a new and

refreshing beat and intro that sets the

mood. It all sounds good enough to be done

in a studio and I wouldn’t be surprised if

someone came up to me and said it is.

Listening, I’ve heard lyrics

referring to Orange County and Rosetta, so

they’re in California at the least. There was

another line dropped about munching on

“Alberto’s”, but I’m sure that “Alberto’s” is a

chain and in plenty of other cities.

The two songs that feature “Jen”

add even more to the experience. Every

song is neither too long nor too short, and

therefore doesn’t get boring and repetitive.

The singer sounds the same, but the music

makes every song new.

I will try to find the person who

handed me this cd and ask him for more

info. I hope that this article will make

someone’s day and get this group some

fame and recognition. They deserve some

after this.

While some songs are better

than others, this cd is entertaining and

worth your time. Check it out and wait for

my article next week telling more on others’

opinions and the group itself. Try out this

cd and enjoy!

EbertContinued from front page

Now you may be saying to

yourself, “Well, I can review movies, that’s

easy”. You probably could review movies

if you wanted to. However, you could not

critique a film in the manner that Mr.

Ebert did. No matter how hard you tried,

you could never match the amount of

passion and the amount of enthusiasm

for film as that man had. Siskel and Ebert

would review 5 movies a week, first with

a written piece and then a T.V show about

it. I don’t know about you, but to watch

and thoroughly analyze 5 movies a week

and still come up with new and

interesting things to say about each

movie takes tremendous amounts of

talent. Siskel and Ebert made you want to

listen to what 2 snobby film critics from

Illinois had to say about the movie you

just saw or were about to see.

It is hard to command respect

from an audience the way Roger Ebert

did. To put all of your opinions in print

and have people coming back to hear

what you have to say next is truly

difficult. You could disagree with him and

still want to hear what he has to say. He

was respected not because of his massive

knowledge of film and cinema, but

because of his passion and enthusiasm

for the medium. People watched the show

and enjoyed watching Siskel and Ebert

disagree and get intensely passionate in

their arguments against each other’s

opinions, but not many people

understand why it is enjoyable. It was

enjoyable to watch 2 men take something

like film, that most people would shrug off

as being not that important, and see them

revere it as the most important thing in

the world.

They knew why film was

important; they knew its implications and

its impact on society. To them, film was

the most important issue. We envied

Roger Ebert without even knowing it. We

envied the fact that they had so much

devotion and enthusiasm. We thought

that if we could be as dedicated as them,

in any area in our lives, we would be set.

Ebert could make you look at a film from

a whole different perspective. He could

make you look at a film you absolutely

hated, and change your mind. He once

said that video games were not an art. A

statement I mostly disagree with.

However, he is so respectable, and his

opinion means so much, that I can

actually find myself agreeing with him.

He loved to discuss movies so much,

when his long time friend and co-

reviewer died in 1999, he kept going. He

would bring other reviewers on the show

just so he could keep talking about and

expressing his love for film. When he was

diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002,

and after multiple surgeries that caused

him the loss of his voice forever, he still

continued to watch and review movies.

His voice, now silent, still carried more

weight than any other film critic.

He was the most famous critic

of all time, but was so humble. He always

looked out for the little guy; he never sold

his ideas short for money. He was an

incorruptible voice of reason and logic in

film, and he will be sorely missed by not

just critics, but regular consumers as

well. As an aspiring critic myself, I can say

that without Mr. Ebert, I probably

wouldn’t have wanted to review or

critique movies. He made it possible for

people to make careers out of editorials

and reviewing. You had a lot more to say

Mr. Ebert, and for that, I give this death

two thumbs down.

Health it up!By Jewel Harris

Juicing is a healthy way to get in

your fruits and vegetables. Especially if you

don’t like eating them raw. The mixture

contains minerals, vitamins and fibers. They

say that juicing can reduce your risk of cancer,

boost your immune system, help you remove

toxins from your body, and help you lose

weight.

Lisa Ko from 5 things you need to

know about says about juicing “Fans of green

juicing, or juicing raw vegetables, say that you

can drink more vegetables than you can eat,

and that juicing allows your body to more

easily absorb the vitamins and antioxidants

extracted from fresh produce. Juicing has been

credited with alleviating everything from skin

diseases and immune disorders to cancer and

high blood pressure.” The Breville, The Green

Star and The Omega Vert are three popular

juicers. Bananas can’t be juiced; any fruits can

be juiced as long as they are water based.

Natural News says “Juicing is an

essential part of creating health. Whether

done as part of a fast or routinely within your

weekly food consumption, it may provide

more cleansing and nutrients.”

I have started juicing and I love it.

My mom and I got a juicer and it is so much

fun. My mom loves to make her juice with

carrots and celery, she adds other things too

but those are her main veggies. My

chiropractor and his family even juices, they

highly recommend it and so do I.

Louisville Win NCAA TitleBy: Eduardo Flores

The guys played with heart, taking

everything they had and putting it on the court. They

strived for the win for themselves and for their

teammate Kevin Ware, who suffered a major injury in

the Semi round.

The University of Louisville won its first

Men’s College Basketball Championship since 1986.

Michigan State fought a good battle, but in the end

Louisville wanted it more. Louisville erased a 12-point

first-half deficit and beat the University of Michigan

82-76 in the championship game of the three-week-

long National Collegiate Athletic Association

tournament.

Louisville had many players step up in the

end. Luke Hancock scored 22 points to lead Louisville,

hitting all five of his 3-point shots, while Peyton Siva

added 18 and Chane Behanan had 15 points and 12

rebounds. The Cardinals, who were "4-point favorites"

according to oddsmakers, outscored Michigan 45-38

during the second half.

Louisville ended their season well off with a

record of 35-5. Rick Pitino became the first coach to

win title with two different schools. Louisville is now

the eighth school with at least three men’s basketball

championships, joining UCLA (11), Kentucky (8), Indiana

(5), North Carolina (5), Connecticut (3), Duke (3) and

Kansas (3).

Six and Seven Year OldBodies Recovered FromHoleBy: Sarah Synder

“There are times when calls

like this happen when we are not able to

make a difference because it is outside of

our realm,” an emotional Dion Burleson,

spokesman for Lincoln County Emergency

Management, told reporters Sunday night.

The first 911 call was from

Jordan Arwood, father of Chloe Arwood,

around 5 PM. His desperate voice is heard

on a recording released by the Lincoln

County communications centre after the

bodies were recovered.

"Please hurry... My children are

buried under tons of dirt... They're buried

under tons of clay... It fell on top of them,"

he said sobbing."The entire wall collapsed

on them. Get a crane. Get a bulldozer. Get

anything you can, please," he said. "There's

no way they can breathe."

An army of workers got to

work, tried to dig the children out.The

effort proved daunting to the 75 workers.

They began digging, using shovels and

bare hands. Family members of the

children, some of them kids themselves,

stood nearby as neighbors consoled them.

“They kept saying: ‘They have

been down there too long without air,’”

neighbor Cybil Johnson told WCNC. “That

is what the little kids were saying up here.

I told them, ‘God will take care of them.’”

Monday. She was one of the most well-

known members of the group and was

handpicked by Walt Disney himself to be

in his show.

Disney stated that she, "Died

peacefully from complications due to

multiple sclerosis, a disease she battled

for over 25 years.” Multiple sclerosis is a

disease in which the immune system

attacks the nerves.

According to Richard Sherman,

the Oscar winning composer who

composed many of her hits, "Annette's

sweet, unassuming spirit, her love of

people, and her capacity to exude

kindness and good feelings to everyone

she met was part of her beautiful

charisma”

The public knew the warm and

lovely Funicello as “America’s Sweetheart”.

Annette made contributions to

society not only by giving us golden

entertainment, but also by forming a

charity to find the cure for multiple

sclerosis. She called it the, “Annette

Funicello Research Fund for Neurological

Diseases”.

Among her many talents, like

acting and dancing, singing was one of

her best. She went on to pursue a

recording career and produced albums

like, “Hawaiiannette,” “Italiannette” and

“Dance Annette.”
