"Rockets are flying from

The eight-day war

between Israel and Gaza has

temporarily come to a stop with the

calling of a cease-fire. It’s unclear

what began the missile-launching

conflict that resulted in the death of

166 Palestinians and six Israelis.

creep onto stage reciting lines from works of

the American poet and author, Edgar Allan

page| Junior Connor Coil takes the lead in

the play, portraying Mr. Edgar Allan Poe

himself. This is his fourth play at Temescal

and acting has always been a passion of

his. When asked to describe the play in a

word he says, “Nevermore.”

The play’s leading force is a new face to

Temescal Canyon, Mrs. Olsen. Even with

this being her first year at the school and

with a new group of kids, She isn’t nervous

though. She admits that the process was

as intense as the students involved.

According to her the play is a “surreal

journey of the last day of Poe's life.”

The play will continue showing on the

1st, 6th, 7th and 8th at 7 pm. The cost of

tickets is $8 for students and $12 for adults

and is roughly an hour and half.

On the same night as the play’s opening,

the school theater was dedicated to Jeanie

Corral, who has seen every show at

Temescal Canyon. Aside from that, she had

been an active member of the community,

serving on the district’s school board since

1988.

Cops for KidsBy: Kaitlyn Crain

Cops for kids has collected toys

for kids for many years. They are a non-

profit organization that is put on by your

local police station. Cops for kids stands

for Central Organization of Police

Specialists. They are known for giving toys

to kids in need around the Christmas time,

but they also offer year round help to kids

with cancer and autism.

Our community Cops for Kids is

put on by Tom Thomas and is holding

many special events around our area to

help raise money. One of the events is a

golf tournament at Summerly. At the end

of December our involved community

helpers will go around Lake Elsinore and

deliver toys to the kids and put a much

needed smile on their faces. They will go

to hospitals and other places like that and

give the kids something that is very much

deserved.

Featured TitanDante EiseleBy: Trevor Biddle

Dante Eisele, a 17-year-old

senior, is one of the most industrious

students on campus. He has done

extensive community service and been

part of the Titan Thunder Regiment since

his freshman year. In addition to that, he’s

a member of Academic Decathalon and

one of the top students in the senior

class.

But the most notable thing

about Dante is his position as the Drum

Major for the field performances. There

were a few questions that this important

Titan had to be asked.

How long were you Drum

Major?

-“I was the field drum major this year.”

What college do you want to

go to?

-“UC Berkeley is my prefered college.”

Do you plan on being in

band in the future?

-“I plan on continuing concert and Jazz

band in the future but not marching

band.”

Why did you decide to try out

for the position of Drum Major?

-“I tried out because I thought that I

would be a good choice for the job and

the fact that it looks great on college

apps.”

How was your experience as

Drum Major?

-“I loved being the drum major because

you earn respect from your peers and you

get to represent the entire band/ school

in competitions.”

What was the best part?

-“Definitely wearing the white uniform.”

-“The pain I got in my back from

conducting so much.”

After Applying to TheUniversity of CaliforniaBy: Alicia Leigan

On November 30th the

application period for the University of

California system officially came to a close.

After applying, UC applicants

must make sure to report their ACT and/or

SAT test scores through the testing

agencies as soon as possible; no later than

December of their senior year. If scores are

reported to one UC campus they will be

shared with all other UC campuses as well.

Provided that you make it into

the top 9 percent of California high school

graduates, you will be guaranteed a spot at

at least one of the UC campuses, if space is

available. For more information, visit:

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/

freshman/california-residents/admissions-

index/index.html

If any changes are made to the

Academic History section of your

application after submission, make sure to

inform each individual campus that you

have applied to. Also, ensure that

application fees have been paid, otherwise

that could jeopardize your chances of

admission. Applicants are advised to check

their email often, as this will be the UC’s

main mode of communication with its

applicants.

Acceptance letters will be

mailed in late March, so be on the look out

for more news and correspondence from

whichever university you applied to. Also

remember that applications for private

universities are open until January 1, and

so you still have the opportunity to apply

and increase your college options

.

There are many great players on

the junior varsity soccer team at Temescal

Canyon this year, and although not all of

them can be recognized, there is one player

in particular who has a passion, love and

talent for soccer.

Robert is a freshman and one of

the defensive players on the junior varsity

soccer team this year. He started playing

soccer around the age of six years old. He

says, “The biggest influence in soccer ,for

me, is my cousin Andy,” and his favorite part

about the sport he claims is, “Getting to

play the game I love with 10 of my best

friends.”

One of these best friends is

fellow soccer player and freshman, Angelo

Diaz, who says, “He (Robert) is a really

defensive player, and he doesn’t make a lot

of contact with players on the opposite

team. I think he is a really good soccer

player.” Though, Robert doesn’t just play

soccer, he lives soccer.

“I sit next to Robert in second

period. He is always talking about soccer; a

bit too often for me, considering I know

barely anything about the sport. He

definitely has a love and passion for soccer,”

says freshman, Kenzie Koubeserian.

Robert is one of the many

great players on Temescal Canyon’s junior

varsity soccer team. He is a great player as

well as a good person to be around. He not

only plays soccer, but he eats, breathes and

sleeps soccer, which is exactly what it takes

to “make it” in the great, big world of soccer.

The Second Ian DykstraMemorial TournamentTemescal Takes FirstPlaceBy: Kirk Sullivan

The Ian Dykstra Memorial

Tournament is first and foremost, a

wrestling tournament, however, it is also

much more. The tournament honors the

memory of Ian Anthony Dykstra, a

cherished member of the wrestling team

that unfortunately passed away two years

ago.

The Ian Dykstra Memorial

Tournament was put into action after

wrestling coach Tom Collins, spoke of a

tournament to raise funds at Ian’s funeral.

Twenty Schools competed in the tournament

on November 24 2012. During the

tournament, three scholarships would be

given away at 500 dollars apiece.

”When my son passed away, a lot

of people wanted to give us money, but we

didn’t want to take it,” said mother Christina

Dykstra. “We decided to put the money that

people donated into a trust fund. Half of the

money would go to the wrestling team, and

the other half would go into the trust fund.”

Temescal placed first with a

score of 206 points. Five wrestlers placed

fourth in the tournament; Sean Duck in the

106 pound league, Albert Salguero in the

138 pound league, Jason Ford in the 182

pound league, Sam Ramirez in the 226

pound league, and David Eubanks in the

heavyweight league.

Three wrestlers placed third in the

tournament, Weston Meserve in the 145

pound league, Garrett Meserve in the 160

pound league and Travis Kitzmiller in the

195 pound league. Only one wrestler placed

first in any of the leagues, that person was

Jason Williams in the 113

pound league.

PEOPLE/SOCIAL Page 04

Continued from front page|

Although these recent events might come

as a shock, for years the residents of Gaza

and southern Israel have lived in constant

fear of violence. According to Israel’s

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as of

November 13, over 797 rockets have been

fired into Israel by Palestinian militants,

during the course of 2012.

With such an enormous

number of rockets fired into Israel you

must wonder, how is it possible for them

to have only suffered 25 civilian

casualties? This remarkably low casualty

rate is due to the success of Israel’s Iron

Dome Missile Defense Systems. A tactical-

range system that was funded by $275

million of American money, and designed

to knock rockets and missiles with a

range of 50 miles. In the recent conflict

the system tallied a shoot-down rate of 85

percent, and is also

designed to ignore

missiles whose

trajectory leads to

open space or the

sea.

Gaza, on

the other hand, does

not have an

advanced defense

system and has thus

suffered far more

casualties and destruction. In addition,

with the possibility of Israel launching a

ground invasion both sides are faced with

bleak futures.

U.S. officials, along with top

officials in Egypt, France, Qatar and Turkey

have meet throughout the week in an

effort to end the hostilities. At the

moment their main objective is to create a

permanent ceasefire and to end Israel's

blockade of Gaza’s coast. However, Israeli

and Palestinian officials have refused to

comment on the ongoing negotiations, so

far now all we can do is hope.

Cyber Monday has become the

new man's way of doing Black Friday.

Instead of having to wait in line with

hoards of people, anyone can stay warm

and cozy at home with a computer and do

all their shopping that way.

Cyber Monday, November 26,

made record online sales. More than $1.47

billion were made just from this online

shopping extravaganza. Amazon said they

sold more Kindles that day then in any

other single day in the year.

The popularity of Cyber Monday

has gone up 17 percent from last year and,

"nearly hald of the sales came from work

computers," say ComScore. Obviously,

shopping online has become the cool new

thing but it comes its own dangers.

We all know it is very easy for

someone to steal your personal

information if it is on the internet. The

same things foes when buying items

during the largest online extravaganza of

the year. Experts say that you should be

cautious when entering your information

and if the deal looks too good to be true, it

probably is.

Everyone lives a good deal and

this was certainly a good way to get one.

only person in an uproar about the

Hostess epidemic.

The Hostess Company popular

for "Twinkies," "Ding Dongs" and "Ho Hos"

has gone bankrupt. The 82 year old

company has gone out of business.

Hostess started its career in 1938 and on

Nov. 16 it has gone out of business.

Reasons for shutting down of the much

beloved company is simply that people no

longer find twinkies appealing.

The shelves of store are no

longer stocked with the hostess products.

Most of the 18,500 workers will be laid off.

The bakers have been on strike and are

have been bidding for boxes of hostess

Many of America's favorite sweets wil l soon

disappear from stores everywhere.

No-Shave November,

Movember, Novembeard, it goes by many

names. Bottom line is, from October 31 to

December 1, men must maintain some

form of facial hair. Many people have

different reasons for participating in the

month-long event; Some try to win

contests, some are just lazy, and others do

it for charity.

Originating from Adelaide,

South Australia in 1999, a group of men

coined the term “Movember” along with

the idea of growing moustaches for

charity during the month of November.

Great minds think alike, because an

unaffiliated group in Melbourne, Australia

launched the Movember Foundation

charity in 2004, with the aim of raising

awareness for prostate cancer and

depression in men.

The foundation has since

raised $174 million worldwide, and was

popularized in North America by 2006. In

2010, participants in the United States

raised over $7.5 million. Other annual hair

growing events have popped up across the

world since the charity’s conception in

2004. Novembeard can actually carry over

into Decembeard and the much later

Moustache March.

Movie Review:

"Lincoln"By :Hayden Gordon

Continued from front

page| The film is actually based on the

book, Team of Rivals: The Political

Genius of Abraham Lincoln, by

historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. It is

set exclusively in the days of the

passing of the 13th amendment. The

film is historically accurate, as well as

enticing and dramatic. Thanks entirely

to Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee

Jones’s performances as Abraham

Lincoln and Thaddeus Stevens

respectively.

The film stars Daniel Day-

Lewis of The Last of the Mohicans, and

There Will Be Blood fame playing the

role of Abraham Lincoln, our nation’s

16th president. Tommy Lee Jones of the

Men In Black series, and No Country

For Old Men fame playing the role of

Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, an

ally of Lincoln. Sally Field plays

Lincoln’s wife Mary Todd Lincoln, and

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the part of

Lincoln’s oldest son Robert. All of

these actors give outstanding

performances, but Lewis’ performance

overshadows everyone else’s. Not only

does Lewis pull off the appearance of

The Great Emancipator, but he also hits

the nail on the head when it comes to

his walk, talk, and charisma. It is as if

Lewis went back in time and studied

Lincoln for a day, his performance is

downright impressive.

As for the historical

accuracy of the film, Spielberg hired a

well-known Lincoln historian to

consult for the movie. The film is very

accurate, and stays true to the actual

story, albeit with a few extra

dramatizations to make the movie less

boring. I would be lying if I said anyone

can enjoy this movie, this movie has a

very select audience hence why it saw

such a limited release (Although it is

the highest grossing film ever to have

a limited release). If you don’t know

anything about Abraham Lincoln or

the Civil War, I really can’t recommend

this film. You might learn a thing or

two, but this film is geared towards

people with an above average

understanding of the events, and

people that understand political lingo.

Even someone such as myself who’s

favorite subject is U.S history, I learned

a great deal that I didn’t know before

walking in.

Even knowing what the

ending of the film is going to be the

entire time, (SPOILER ALERT: Lincoln is

assassinated), it still was very effective

when it came up. You get attached to

Lincoln’s character and it pains you to

see him leave and the curtains quite

literally fall (he was assassinated in a

theatre). I give the film a solid 4

stovepipe hats out of 5.

Music AlbumReview: Paradiseby Alyssa Ennis

‘’We gave Paradise a 4.5/5, calling

it "a cohesive, moving record that

represented a major step forward for the

singer.’’ says Carl Williot from Idolator.com.

Paradise by Lana Del Rey is also rated 4.5/5

stars on Itunes and has over

3000 reviews.

‘‘Lana Del Rey has a very unique

sound, that’s unlike any other artist out

there and Paradise is an example of how

amazing she really is.’’ says Jillian Jones.

Lana Del Rey has two complete albums and

a few ep’s which all have her unique sound

on them.

‘’If Paradise proves anything, it

is that Del Rey has mastered her form; she

has proven time and time again that she

can nail these string heavy ballads well.’’

says Dylan S. from Sputnikmusic.com. Lana

Del Rey sure can hit those notes, especially

in songs like ‘‘American.’’

Lana Del Rey sure is an

accomplished artist with the Woman Of

The Year award at the GQ Men of the Year

Awards last year. She’ll only get better and

better as time goes by and while she gets

further into her career she’ll only become

more successful.

FirstThanksgivingBy Marianna Fontana

Continued from front

page| Before the break I was

talking with some friends and

asking them about what

Thanksgiving is about, how they

celebrate it, and what are their

traditions. Most of them were surprised

hearing that in Italy we don’t

celebrate it, because it is an American

moment.

I knew before what it is, but I

didn’t know what some of the traditions

are. This year my host-family decided to

celebrate it at their house so, we

spent a couple of days to prepare and set

up everything. My host-mom

thought at the decorations, while my host-

dad cooked the turkey. Everyone

who came brought a traditional

Thanksgiving dish.

So, the oldest man prayed and

we started eating. Everything was good and,

in perfect Thanksgiving style, we all ate

until we were ready to explode.

Then we hung around and just had fun.

My first Thanksgiving was

gorgeous and everything was perfect. I am

sure I will bring with me this amazing

memory back in Italy and maybe have my

little own Thanksgiving there, memorizing

my American life.

The Chromebook is a

brand new kind of laptop, created by

Google. No, it doesn’t run Windows

or Macintosh, but running a new

kind of operating system, Chrome OS.

The name may sound familiar if you

have used the Google

Chrome browser.

Currently there are three

models of Chromebooks, with the

starting price of $199. So what makes

the Chromebook so special? Well just

look at that starting price, it’s rather

affordable. The laptop is also a cloud

based operating system, meaning

that most, if not all, of what you do

will have to be done online through

an internet connection.

The $199 model does come

with a 350GB hard disk drive and all

models come with 2 years of 100GB

of online Google Drive storage. Has a

built in HD webcam, 11.6" display,

dual-core Intel Celeron processor,

three USB 2.0 ports, HDMI and VGA

ports, memory card slot, up to

around 4 hours of battery life, 1-inch

thick, boot up time 20 seconds, and

weighs 3 pounds.

I would say that this

laptop would be good if you spend

most of your time online, and aren’t

looking for any fancy programs or

high end computer work. Since this

is a cloud based OS, you won’t be

able to install iTunes, Microsoft

Office, or other commonly used

applications. But Google does have

its own supplements that could do

similar work, such as Google Music

and Google Drive (file storage and

document maker). There is also a

Google Webstore where you can

download other

applications. However, you will need

an internet connection to use these

applications, although some

applications do have the capability of

running offline.

Bottom line is that if

you’re looking for a cheap laptop

that will let you surf the web fast

and easily this would be a great buy.

If you want Photoshop or other

complex software the Chromebook

wouldn’t be the best fit.

Have You BeenCaught By A Catfish?By Mackenzie Vaughn

Catfish (verb) - to pretend to be

someone you’re not online by posting false

information, such as using someone else’s

pictures on social media sites, usually with

the intention of getting someone to fall in

love with you.

Catfish is one of MTV’s newest

shows, which is a documentary series

following two guys, Nev Schulman and Max

Joseph, who talk about the truth and lies of

online dating. They try and help you catch

the “Catfish” in your life.

People meet each other online all

the time, but no one ever really takes the

time to think that this person might

actually not be real, which is where Nev and

Max come in to help them figure it out.

Nev, Max and a camera crew

travel around the country to help these

people meet the possible love of their life.

While it is somewhat suspenseful at points,

they can be a little dramatic; but that’s

expected in these new reality shows.

It is different from any other

show on tv right now, and it’s cool to see

these people find out if it’s the real deal or

not" says viewer. While during the show, I

want so badly for these people to be the real

deal, and for everyone to have a happy

ending, I know this isn’t always the case.

Movie Review: Life ofPiBy: Sarah Appleby

If movies about teenage Indians

stranded on life boats with tigers named

Richard Parker is your kind of thing, then Life

of Pi is a movie for you! This film adaptation

of Yann Martel’s beloved novel tells the story

of a young man whose life violently shifts

from a comfortable state, into a proverbial

story of struggle, and triumph.

Despite this being his first

appearance on film, Suraj Sharma “Pi Patel”

gives an exceptional performance. Not only

was the acting great, so were the graphics;

especially the tiger. Richard Parker, along with

many other animals, was truly brought to life

through CG effects.

This film has the ability to make

you smile from ear to ear in one scene, and

bring you to consider the lowest parts of a

person’s life in the very next. It captures the

human life through the lens of struggle in a

unique and memorable way. I definitely

recommend this movie for people of all ages.

Though much more exciting if you have read

the book, it is still an interesting and

entertaining movie without. I give this movie

4 titan stars.
