Thanksgiving Now and Then by
A. Student and B. Student
The first Thanksgiving was different than what we do now. Now we have
pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, mac’ncheese and all kinds of stuff.
Yum, Yum!
Back then they only had fish, shellfish, and vegetables and some deer meet.
Almost half of the pilgrims died because they had no food and it was
really cold. But an Indian named Squanto helped them. He showed them how to plant corn using dead
fish.
Oh yeah, they came over on the Mayflower. It was a bad trip. A lot of them got sick and it smelled bad on
the boat.
We have Thanksgiving now because the pilgrims were glad that they
survived. We celebrate it on the last Thursday in November because
Franklin Roosevelt made it an official holiday then. A bunch of other
presidents tried before that.
Benjamin Franklin wanted to make turkeys the national bird of the United states but Thomas Jefferson said no.
So Benjamin Franklin called male turkeys “toms” to make fun of him.
So when you have your Thanksgiving dinner this year remember the
Pilgrims and Indians and Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.
