KINDERGARTEN 2018 If you have a child or know of a child that may be starting at The Entrance Public School in 2018, could you please contact the office ASAP for enrolment and Headstart information. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome back to Term 3 and the students have settled quickly back into their routines. Already I have had lots of students bringing outstanding work to show me and I have visited classes and seen the outstanding quality of our staff and students. Term 3 promises to be a very busy term. Good luck to all of our performers including our preschool students who will be performing at the Gulang festival in Week 4. Thank you to our wonderful staff for preparing our students for the opportunity to participate in educational, cultural and social learning experiences. Our talented students will also have their art work displayed at Bay Village shopping centre for the next three weeks. A reminder that the toilets at school are for The Entrance Public School students use only. Visitors to the school throughout the day, including before school, in the morning and afternoon pick up that need to use the toilets must see the office and be directed to a staff or visitor toilet. Thank you for your assistance with this issue as it is for the safety of our students and is a child protection issue. Flu season is here! Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Remind your child about these good hygiene practices to minimise the spread of infection: • Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should stay

home until their symptoms are gone. • Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing

or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use.

• Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness.

The seasonal influenza vaccine, which protects against the pandemic influenza strain as well as two other influenza strains, is now available free to eligible people. More information about the vaccine is available from the NSW Health Immunisation Unit's vaccination page. Previous vaccination with the pandemic influenza vaccine, Panvax® is not a barrier to also receiving the seasonal influenza vaccine. Have a great week. Mark Rudd Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome to Term 3! I hope you all enjoyed your holiday – the weather was amazing! All classes have settled into Term 3 beautifully and I am always so happy to see our TEPS kids smiling faces as I walk around our school. I have some moments I wanted to share from last term – I saw so many wonderful examples of learning – writing and cooking (my favourite – scones!) from K-6B, our gorgeous KD who enjoyed their chips down at the waterfront for their reward day, Zylah from 2L and her speech on Sport. I even had a visit from Princess Fiona and Josh from 2K.

Have a wonderful fortnight TEPS! Nicole Heazlewood Deputy Principal

Public Speaking Semi Finals Well done to all our Stage 2 Public Speaking semi- finalists. It is not an easy task to do, getting up and speaking in front of your teachers, peers and the judging panel. We were so extremely proud of the courage these students displayed and how well prepared and interesting their speeches were.

Some future Public Speakers in the making for sure! STEM Day STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM activities ask students to tackle real-world problems and relate learning in class with real-world applications. The learning is inquiry based and engages students to work on solutions to problems. Investigation,

collaboration and trial and error are key components of any STEM activity. During Science Week (Wednesday Week 5) this term, Stage 2 will be participating in a STEM Day at school. Stage 2 teachers have organised 6 different STEM activities that the students will rotate through every 45 minutes throughout the day. Another unique learning opportunity for our students at TEPS. Stage Sport Thursday afternoon from 2.00pm till 3.00pm our Stage 2 Sport program is held. Children are required to wear their sports uniform each Thursday, including suitable footwear to participate in sporting activities. The students rotate through 2 different physical skills development activities per week. Sport is a compulsory component of the school curriculum and it is a requirement that every student participates, unless injured. Fruit Break Every morning during the 2 hour learning session all Stage 2 classes participate in a fruit break. This opportunity allows children to recharge and refocus for the entire prime learning time and also ensures that our students are getting one serving of fresh fruit each day. Please make sure your child brings a piece of fruit to school every day. Fresh fruit cups are readily available at our canteen for $1.00 and students are allowed to buy these for their fruit breaks if required. Stage 2 Teachers Mrs Haslam (4N), Ms Ambrose/Miss Brummel (4A), Ms Bayfield/ Miss Cooper (4B), Mrs Canobie (3C), Mrs Kirk (3K) and Ms Wilson (3W) STAGE 3 NEWS

Hey Team, Thank You! This term, like all others, promises to be a very busy term full of lots of great learning opportunities for students to engage in and develop their full potential both within the classroom and beyond.

In addition to these great opportunities, this term also brings with it some significant change with respect to our class 6S and Stage 3 as a whole. On the final Friday of last term, I was offered the position of Head Teacher Welfare at Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College- Tumbi Umbi Campus and it was with a mixed heart I accepted this new position. A mixed heart, because whilst I am excited by the opportunity to work with our students during the next stage of their learning at Tumbi, I was saddened to have to leave my present class and Stage midway through this year. I will finish my position of teacher of 6S and Assistant Principal of Stage 3 on Friday 28th July and commence eight weeks of Long Service Leave before taking up this new position on the first day of Term 4. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Stage 3 teaching team for the hard work, commitment and passion that they exhibit each and every day- our kids are exceptionally lucky here at TEPS to have so many gifted and talented teachers. I would like to thank you, the parents and caregivers, for all of your support and friendship over my time here at TEPS. And lastly I would like to thank each of the

students in my class for being the exceptionally unique group of students that they are. I will look forward to being at the gates of Tumbi as they begin their next chapter of learning next year. Kay Chaffer will take over the teaching of 6S next week and Cherryl Martinez will be relieving Assistant Principal for Stage 3.

Thank you for seven wonderful years. Year 6 - Save the Date The Year 6 Farewell this year will be held on Tuesday 12th December. There will be a change in venues this year. In recent years we have found the Shelly Beach Surf Club to be too small to accommodate the number of people at our event. This year we have booked the function rooms at Diggers, The Entrance. Year 6 parent and caregivers, keep an eye out for a note coming home inviting you to be apart of the Year 6 Farewell organisation committee. Thank you in advance for your support in making this another spectacular event. Stage 3 Public Speaking This week the Stage Finals of the Public Speaking Competition will be heard. Congratulations to all of the finalists who prepared fantastic entertaining and informative speeches. A special congratulations to Cameron 6M, Matilda 6D, Amien 5D and Scarlett 5D, for being our finalists for Stage 3 2017. Tumbi Tasters- Begins Tomorrow!!!! Notes regarding the Tumbi HS Taster Program were sent home last term and a table displaying students and their allocated days were sent home last week. The program will commence in Week 2 of this term. Parents and caregivers are responsible for transporting students to and from these days or oragnising their child to travel with another parent or caregiver. If there is any problem with your child attending this event, do not hesitate to contact me.

Deep regards,

Russell Stefans Assistant Principal- Stage 3 [email protected] The LaST News (Learning and Support Teachers) Home Reading It has been a fantastic week seeing so many of our students receiving certificates , pencils, ice block vouchers and books for their wonderful home reading efforts. ABORIGINAL EDUCATION Last Term was very busy for Aboriginal Education at TEPS. Here are some of the events and celebrations we held last Term: Stage 3 Fishing Mob

Last Term, the sun came out just long enough for our Stage 3 Aboriginal students to throw a fishing line in at Picnic Point. We had a great time learning about Sustainable fishing practices and how to bait our hooks correctly. Everyone loved patiently waiting

for the fish to bite and we had some success too! We are still chasing the big one though and we can’t wait to head off next Term to test our skills again. A huge thank you goes to Mr Dykeman and Mrs Musson for passing on their fishing skills and to Ms Saunders for capturing some great photos. NAIDOC Week Celebrations

We had our Annual NAIDOC week celebrations with all students and teachers dressing in Red, Black & Yellow mufti. Students were able to buy some scrumptious cupcakes that had been baked and beautifully decorated by teachers and our canteen staff! All students attended a ‘JollyBops’ Science Show with Aboriginal Perspectives. We learnt about Aboriginal technology, instruments, songs, sacred and spiritual places and some students were invited to perform! All the students really enjoyed the day! A big thank you to Mrs Haslam for organising the Science Show, the teachers and canteen staff for baking delicious cupcakes and congratulations to students and families for supporting the event. It was an awesome way to celebrate NAIDOC! NAISDA Stage 3 Aboriginal students attended the NAISDA Dance College’s production called Ngangga Ya (Speaking to the Futures). It was a dance performance that shared inspirational stories of resilience and it was told by the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers. Beforehand, students attended a dance workshop that was taught by some of the performers at NAISDA! The students loved learning traditional and contemporary dance techniques and they all looked amazing dancing with students from the local area. One of the dance teachers complimented our dancers, saying they did a ‘deadly’ job! What a big compliment for our students!
