The Sea Fisheries Statistics for 1983 largely follow the layout o f the 1982 publication. Where appropriate, figures for earlier years have been converted to metric units. Classificacionof vessel lengths and gross registered tonnage o f vessels remain in imperial units. The tables refer, as far as possible, to d ie United Kingdom with separate figures for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Additional statistics relating to Scotland are published annually in the Scottish Sea Fisheries Statistical Tables.

in some cases figures for the various parts <3 f the United K ingdom are not strictly comparable and differences are explained in the headings and footnotes o f the tables. Mara general definitions are given in the Explanatory Notes on Page 1.

These Tables are intended to provide a broad picture o f Che United Kingdom fishing industry and its operations. Requests for more detailed information should be addressed to:

'EXPLANATORY MOTES

Î. The various species of fish are divided into three moin groups: demersal, pelagic and shellfish. Tne names o f the kinds of fish included in each group are shown in cable 2.

2. The term "demersal" fish covers species living on or near the sea bed; "pelagic" fish are species found mainly in coastal waters in shoals near die surface o f che sea. The term "wet fish” is used to denote both demersal and pelagic species.

3. Quantities o f whole, headless or fiileted-at-sea fish landed by British and foreign fishing vessels are shown in terms o f equivalent landed weight for the m ost common form o f presentation (head on, gutted for most species} except in the trade tables ( 17 et seq} where actual product weights are shown, and in the area of capture tables (6) where iivawetght is shown.

4. The term "British landings” relates Co the landings o f British registered fishing vessels.

5. Mackerel landing figures for 1973—19H3 include a quantity caught by British vessels but not actually landed at British Ports. These quantities ara transshipped to foreign vessels in coastal waters and ara later recorded as exports.

3. The sign . . indicates a quantity o f less chen Ö.S tonne or a value less shan £SGQ according to the table.

7, Difficulties in collecting complete itatistics on shellfish landings mean that available figures may significantly underestimate the total landings in same instances. The figures are however thought to be broadly indicative o f trends.
