The rain might have been pouring on the morning of 14 January but that did not dampen the spirits of the eager 2015 Grade 1s on

their first day of school. Outside every school streams of vehicles were parked on pavements or any open space they could find so parents could witness their offspring’s first day of their school career. Parents walked in with their children to find

their desks and once the school learners were settled, the parents went outside and

watched their children from the window, hesitant to leave.The Grade 1s were kept busy

with colouring in pictures, sorting out their stationery packs, doing puzzles and getting acquainted with their newfound class-mates and soon-to-be friends.It was a new beginning not only for Grade 1s but also for Grade 8s entering the next phase of their education, as well as for each child entering a higher standard. tame TIMES wishes every school learner a productive and positive school year. Make the best of every opportunity and aim high.

The JOY Dogs were proud to be associated with the Radio 702 and Standard Bank Truck of Love Initiative last year in December.The three dogs brought smiles and joy to the faces of all those who met them. The residents at the Ithokomeleng Association for the Care of the Aged and Disabled Home in Alexandra were particularly taken with Oscar, especially Mama Marg who runs the Home. The children at Orlando Children’s Home were surprisingly not scared of the dogs and enjoyed seeing them perform their well-known tricks of reading cue cards and barking out their ages.It was an exciting day for all and the Truck of Love dispensed much needed groceries and bedding and, of course, some toys for the children.

Last week schools started, and even though this brought much joy to proud parents and excited children (see page 1and 3), it also brought much frustration to residents who stay very close to schools.Residents in The Broads Street are very annoyed (read pg 4) and even had a parent tell them that their driveways are council property so they have no right to tell them not to park there so the residents can access their garages.On Wednesday I experienced the traffic chaos as I went to schools to go take photos. I wanted to go get photos at Glenvista High but at 7:20 I changed my mind after sitting behind cars for about 15 minutes to drive 200 metres. I would have had to park many blocks away in order to find a parking and then walk to the school. This was also the case with many other schools I visited, so I ended up parking far away and walking to the school. Plus, it was raining.But now the question is - what is the solution? Children need to be dropped off at school, but at the same time residents also have the right to have their driveways free of cars blocking their way. I can understand the residents’ frustration as I live across the road from a nursery school in Meyersdal and at times I also have to wait a while before the congested traffic eases down as parents drop their kids off.In this situation politeness and respect is not optional - it is a must. If you are blocking someone’s driveway, you are in the wrong and you should apologize and move as quickly as you can. This is a problem at most schools in The South and amicable compromises need to be made. After all, we are a community.

How many activities are enough?

Elise Olivier, a child and educational psychologist from Northcliff in Johannesburg recommends the following:- Select no more than two activities per year for children under the age of six.- Older children should preferably take part in one seasonal team sport and one other activity that they pursue throughout the year.- Music and art lessons should also be considered as extramurals.

Choosing the right activity

Your child should have an input when deciding on what activity to choose. An extramural should meet the following criteria:- have value- be fun and enjoyable- encourage socialisation- boost your child’s confidence

Throw-in-the-towel syndrome

What do you do if your child is determined to do an activity but gives up on it after only a few lessons? Unless the activity genuinely causes great unhappiness and/ or emotional problems, experts believe that your child should continue for at least one term. It will teach them to persevere and that participation and performance demands hard work and dedication.

Don’t:

- allow your child to take on too much- force your own childhood dreams on to your child- use the school’s extramural activities programme as a babysitting service- fill your child’s weekend with activities - forget your child needs time to rest

Parents are generally busier than ever these days and so are their schoolgoing children. This can make decisions about extramural activities difficult to make.Although extramural activities are important at school level since they contribute to the development of many characteristics that are fundamental to children’s growth into adulthood - including teamwork, sportsmanship and accountability - participating in too many activities can have negative effects and leave children feeling tired and overwhelmed.

GOLDEN RULE: Extramural activities are meant to be fun for all involved.

The Glenvista branch had 20 top-scorers, five second places and one winner.“Every single student shone like stars on the stage and made Figures Glenvista very proud. It is with great interest that the residents of Mulbarton have been watching the developments surrounding the proposed school in Glenvista near Stegman Road, and the response of Councillor Paul Smit. We too oppose the building of yet another school in our suburb or any neighbouring suburb - as he correctly intimates, the addition of such a school materially lowers the value of the neighbouring properties. However, this is only the beginning of the problems experienced by residents

neighbouring a school. They have to contend with extra traffic, additional noise from noisy school activities, as well as students and parents who have absolutely no regard for the residents of the street which they enter as guests. As the residents of Mulbarton, particularly those living on The Broads we have had to deal with Glenvista High School, Kumon extra classes and the Malusi School for a number of years, without any support from the school owners/principals, Metro Police, SA Police or the city council/councillor.

THE BROADS: traffic a nightmareConcerned The Broads resident writes:

PROBLEMS INCLUDE:

TRAFFIC- with no traffic law enforcement. Parents park the roads full at all hours, while trying to secure the closest parking to the gate so that their child does not have to walk too far. Parents stop in the middle of the road and block the intersections of The Broads and Kirby Beller, as well as The Broads and Dereham, doing U-turns as well as pick-ups and drop-offs. At the start of this year it has taken 25 minutes to drive the 200 metres to our gate, with rude and obnoxious parents blocking driveways.In addition to the private traffic you have commercial traffic in the form of bus and minibus traffic. During Glenvista High sporting days buses park The Broads streets full, causing significant congestion.The Kumon extra lesson centre has no perimeter fencing and parents park as close to the road as possible, making entry into the intersection of Kirby Beller and The Broads very difficult to negotiate, with visibility curtailed by cars parked on the kerb.You have students who are inept in processing basic road rules, such as “look before you walk,” as well as those students that drive themselves, performing wheel spins up and down the road.

NOISE-we have to listen to screaming kids all morning, particularly at Malusi and their neighbouring nursery school. Glenvista High serenades us with school announcements all morning on their intercom – to irritate us further they have employed an announcer with the most awful voice. We hear all school bells, as well as the noise pollution from their Marius Robertson Hall, which they lease out from time to time to private functions.A few cars collecting children from Glenvista High play music so loud that the bass causes our window panes to resonate loudly, disturbing our peace.

ENVIRONMENTAL - each and every afternoon residents are tasked with collecting the litter left behind by parents cleaning out their cars’ filth on our lawns, kids dropping papers and tins as they walk by, or after their picnic on our lawn waiting for their lift. We are also left with the stench of a smoked hookah/hubbly bubbly.Malusi School has recently chopped down old trees in their yard without consulting their neighbours for consent. We suspect this is to build additional blue classroom shacks, much like they have done at the nursery school they own next door to their premises.Informal traders have also set up shop, selling items conducive to the increase in litter and pollution - not to mention the fact that the location of Glenvista High School was originally earmarked to be a nature/ bird sanctuary and we, the residents who have lived here in excess of 35 years, have been forced to accept the building sans any form of meaningful consultation.The King III code calls for an “Inclusive stakeholder approach;” however, the respective bodies at all three institutions named herein appear to have ignored the legitimate rights of the neighbouring community in which their businesses operates. Our attempts to interact with the schools have been met with incompetence, arrogance and complete avoidance.Clr Paul Smit told tame TIMES, "I will be requesting an appointment with the principal at Glenvista High next week for others issues and will raise and revert back when I have had the meeting."The letter has been sent to Glenvista High and Malusi College for comment however the Kumon extra lesson facilty was not open however a message was left.Are you a parent dropping off your child or one of the frustrated residents? The New Year is in full swing and already you may feel that there are not enough hours in your day. One way of not only saving time but also money is by creating a carpool to make the school run easier. Carpooling is an arrangement among a group of parents in which each owner takes turns driving a group of children, including their own, to school.

BENEFITS OF CARPOOLING YOUR KIDS TO SCHOOL:1. CONVENIENCEOptimally, you could only be responsible for driving the carpool once a week which will save you some time in the morning.2. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLYIt is a good way to reduce your carbon footprint and take better care of the environment. With fewer cars on the road, there is less pollution.3. SAVING MONEYIt is no secret that petrol is expensive. With carpooling, you save money on petrol since you do not have to drive your kids to and from school every day.4. RELIABLE TRANSPORTNot every school has a reliable bus system. With a carpool, you know when the transport is going to arrive, and if there is a setback they will call you directly.5. FRIENDSHIPSCarpooling is a good way to make friends, not only for the students, but for parents, too. For kids, they will benefit from being able to walk into school with classmates every day. For adults, the relationships established through carpooling can transition into very real and valuable friendships.

HOW TO CREATE A CARPOOLAfter identifying the interested parties, hold a meeting will all the parents to discuss and agree on the following:- Pickup times and locations- Driving route - It is a good idea to maintain a routine, with all parents driving the same basic route. If there is an emergency, other parents will know where to find you.- Driver schedules

These must be printed and distributed to all the carpool members.- Contingency plans This is important in case of sudden changes in driving schedules. If a driver cannot make a day, it is his or her responsibility to swap with someone else.- Vacation dates and arrangements- Emergency contact information and procedures- Late policy- Establish rules for late- comers and decide how long to wait.

IMPORTANT DO’S AND DON’TS:Do not do errands when you are on dutyDrive only from point A to point B. Pick up your dry cleaning later.Never use your cell phone when drivingIf you must make a call, pull over.Maintain your carMake sure your car is gassed up and ready for the road and keep it clean.Lay down the lawOn the first day you drive, spell out your road rules. Rules might cover such things as rough-housing, yelling and whether or not you allow eating and drinking in your car.PasswordIf you are not going to be driving on a particular day, remind your own child who will be. Come up with a password. If every driver and child knows it, a stranger will not be able to trick kids into getting into the car on the pretence that he or she is filling in for the usual driver.Pickup locationEstablish a pickup spot where all the kids wait together for the car-pool driver.Drop-off policyWait for each child to enter his or her home before driving away.InsuranceTo protect yourself, carry liability insurance.DocumentationA list of children’s names, ages and gender, their parent’s names and contact details should be distributed among all parents involved. Also keep a copy of each child’s allergies or medical problems.

Johannesburg Water (JW), the City’s water and sanitation service provider would like to inform residents about a planned water disruption that will affect the areas listed below within their system from 18:00 on 24 January till 25 January at 19:00. This is for Rand Water to do maintenance at the Eikenhof pump station. The water supply disruption is expected to last 25 hours. Rand Water will continue to supply water into the system at a reduced capacity but there might be poor pressures and no water supply experienced in those areas during this service interruption.There will be tanks provided/ filled at the hospitals listed below. A man was arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle in Summer Crescent, Moffatview.Reservist Sgt Smith was patrolling when he noticed a white Jetta driving in front of him. The member tested the registration number of the vehicle through radio control on the SAPS enquiry channel.The vehicle tested positive as a stolen vehicle - a white Hyundai with a Kempton Park SAPS case number. The member pulled over the vehicle and informed the driver that

the number-plates on his vehicle were those of a white Hyundai that was reported stolen.The driver mentioned he was repairing the vehicle. The member checked for the license disc and the chassis number and it was not there. He then checked the engine number and it tested positive for two different, stolen number-plates.The driver was arrested and taken to Moffatview SAPS; and the vehicle was taken to Aeroton.

A male suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm on 3 January.Reservist Sgt Sithole and Reservist Cst Ngogela were doing crime prevention patrols in Sector 1. They noticed a suspicious-looking male wearing a brown leather jacket at the corner of Johannesburg Road and 8th Street, La-Rochelle.When the man saw the police, he started running towards Turf Street. Reservist Cst Ngogela jumped out of the vehicle and followed him on foot while Sgt Sithole drove behind him. Cst Ngogela caught the man, searched him and found the firearm.He was arrested and taken to Moffatview SAPS.

Five suspects were arrested on 6 January for possession of hijacked tyres.Cst Letsoalo from Moffatview SAPS received a call from Cpt Sharp informing him that the recovery of tyres in Bramley was related to a Moffatview SAPS case.The five suspects were arrested and the owner of the tyres was called to identify his property. This he was easily able to do, as he is the only supplier who imports this specific brand of tyres.

Sgt Kekana from Moffatview SAPS arrested one suspect in December for selling stolen tyres to a shop owner in Turffontein. The tyres were recovered and given back to the owner on 2 January.

Shocking! Puppy love drives huge rescue operation

A pair of pups trapped in an underground storm water pipe in Avoca Hills, Durban, were rescued on Thursday after a nail-biting fi ve-hour

operation. The dachshund puppies had to spend the night in the 150mm diameter PVC pipe under their home after their owners failed to locate them

– despite digging a 1m trench and cutting open a section of the pipe. The SPCA and fi re department which were called out to the scene also battled

to fi nd them. A private rescue outfi t, Rescue Tech, using a specialized camera which they inserted into the cut-out section of pipe,

eventually spotted them and a deeper trench was dug. They were hauled out, much to the relief of the owners, the large

BERLIN – The European Space Agency says its Beagle-2 lander, which had been lost on Mars since 2003, has been found.ESA said in a statement Friday that new photos taken by the high-resolution camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show the lander partially deployed on the surface of the Red Planet.Beagle-2 has not been heard of since it separated from its mother ship, but ESA says the images prove the entry, descent and landing sequence did work and that it landed successfully on Mars on Christmas Day in 2003.The British-built Beagle-2 was launched on ESA’s Mars Express orbiter and was supposed to look for life.After the project failed, two U.S. spacecrafts landed on Mars and sent back many pictures and extensive scientifi c data.

Tennis South Africa has announced their strongest possible Fed Cup team, including the country’s top-ranked female player, Chanelle Scheepers, for the Euro/Africa Group 2 tie from 4 to 7 February in Tallinn, Estonia. South Africa will face the hosts, as well as Bosnia Herzegovina, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Egypt and Slovenia in the round-robin competition to be played

at the Tere Tennis Centre. The team, to be called the KIA SA Fed Cup Team, will be supported by KIA Motors

South Africa. Scheepers achieved a career-high singles ranking of

37 in 2011 when she won the WTA title in Guangzhou, China. She is currently ranked 77th in the world,

and is back on the SA Fed Cup team for the first time in 10 years.

“I’m so happy to be able to join the team again,” said Scheepers. “I

around the world and it’s even more

exciting to be able to do that in a team format

with great young players coming up”.

South African Captain Earl Grainger named Chanel Simmonds, Ilze Hattingh and Michelle Sammons as the other three players to join Scheepers on the team. Netball South Africa (NSA) announced on 13 January the appointment of Benny Saayman as Head Coach of the SPAR Protea team. She will be assisted by Dr Elsje Jordaan and Ms Martha Mosoahle.Their appointment is with effect from 1 February 2015 until 31 August 2015. They replace Elize Kotze, who resigned as head coach last week for personal reasons.“We are confident that Ms Saayman would be able to guide the team to a successful Netball World Championships (WNC),” said NSA President Mimi Mthethwa.“She is a mature coach who has been on the same platform before and during her tenure the team was ranked fifth in the world. Ms Saayman was the coach for the Western Stings, the NPL that won the second division of the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup last year. Her trademark is playing basic netball. I would like our team to play basic, fast netball”.South Africa is drawn along Malawi, Singapore and Sri Lanka in Pool C (INF has indicated that this could change). Although this may look like an easy pool, it would be bad for the team to take these teams lightly. Regardless of where the team ends in the pool, if they are in position one or two they are guaranteed to meet either Australia or New Zealand in the next stage of the competition.
