Dear York Chapter Members, The York Chapter, American Guild of Organists is now beginning its 78th year. The Officers and Executive Board members of the Chapter have been meeting regularly during the summer to schedule, arrange and plan the monthly meetings and programs for the Chapter. New Officers and Board member have also begun their duties with the chapter. Two of our student members, Layton Graves and Daniel Rothermel recently performed in an organ recital at Messiah College for the Harrisburg Chapter AGO, Shenk Scholarship recital. Both students received the Shenk organ scholarship which provided summer organ instruction. Layton studies with York AGO member Richard Frey and Daniel studies with me. Layton and Daniel both gave stellar performances. Congratulations to these talented student members. As I begin my fourth consecutive term as your Dean, I want to thank the Officers and Executive Board members who have worked to keep the mission of the Guild. Thanks also to our outgoing Board members Donna Snyder and Cheryl Huber. Thanks to Roy for his continued work on preparing our newsletters. I encourage you to attend our meetings and programs this year. A stellar highlight will be the dedication organ recital at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York. Olivier Latry, titular organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris will play the dedicatory recital on Sunday, November 17. I hope that you will participate and become involved with the meetings of the York Chapter, AGO.

Director of Music, Mt. Calvary Episcopal Church, Camp Hill, PA Mt. Calvary Episcopal Church seeks a Director to lead the music ministry of a thriving community of Christians who are dedicated to worshiping God and sharing Christ's love in our community. We are a warm, welcoming fellowship enjoying inspiring liturgy, beautiful music, and thoughtful preaching. We take seriously God's call to be a church of all ages, and we provide a vibrant ministry to children and young families. The adult choir consists of approximately 20 volunteers. The choir sings a varied repertoire of anthems and masses representing all periods of music at the 10am Eucharist, September through June. Mt. Calvary's pipe organ is a two-manual, 13-rank instrument, installed in 1975 by the Moller Organ Co. In the summer of 1998 it was re-voiced, additional pistons and levels of memory were added, and the console of the organ was converted to solid state equipment including musical instrument digital interface (MIDI). In 1999, an electronic component built by the Ahlborn-Galanti company was interfaced with the pipe organ. This module of 20 additional stops, playable through the existing instrument, raises the total number of stops to 33. The Director of Music will collaborate with the Rector to develop a music program which enhances the spirit of worship and assists the entire congregation in experiencing and connecting with God. The candidate should be skilled in teaching and conducting volunteer singers of all ages. Strong pastoral leadership, organizational ability, keyboard skills, and a collaborative spirit are essential. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Director will serve approximately 15 hours per week.

Organist Convention Review During the second week of July 2013 six York Chapter members joined with nearly 300 others at the Region III Convention of the American Guild of Organists held in Winchester, Virginia. Winchester is a charming town with a quaint historic district. The main street is closed to traffic and lined with shops and restaurants. The hotel and the six churches that hosted the various events were conveniently located within this district and the ability to walk between events while chatting with colleagues lent a relaxed and casual pace to the convention. The convention began with a festive hymn festival. David Cherwein was at the organ and Susan Palo Cherwein shared several of her poems. A large choir was present and the atmosphere positively charged as a full house of musicians sang great hymns of faith. At the front of the church was a huge cardboard castle awaiting the arrival of children the next morning for Bible School. It is the very nature of these conventions to offer choices of workshops and recitals. What follows is a description of the particular events I chose to attend. Monday, after Morning Prayer, I listened to a recital by 17 year old Karen Christiansen who played with authority and maturity beyond her years. The world will be hearing much more from this gifted young organist. Next, four college-age organists presented a recital. It has been a recent trend at AGO conventions to feature young recitalists to help curb the notion that organ playing is a dying art. It is not. In fact, I find the talent level of our young organists exceptional. Next, 6th Dimension, a professional handbell choir, played a variety of pop and folk music including, of course, Shenandoah. After lunch I attended a class on shape-note singing and learned much about the origins and influences of this early American hymnody. In the afternoon, we were treated to a stunning concert by the choir of St. Paul’s K Street (Washington DC)—a choir that maintains the high standards of the English Cathedral Tradition—boys, girls, men, and women in a perfect blend of balance and harmony. Monday evening we were all together again for a marvelous recital by Nathan Laube, a 25-year old organist who just finished studies in Europe and has been appointed to the prestigious position of organ professor at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Tuesday, after Morning Prayer, Jeremy Filsell, of the National Cathedral in Washington DC, shared his thoughts on various issues. Christoph Linde of Dresden, Germany, spoke about the Pennsylvania German organ building tradition. David Cherwein spoke about improvisation in worship and specifically how the worship experience can be heightened by hymn accompaniment that highlights the text. After lunch and our regional business meeting, Julie Vidrick Evans played a recital that paired contemporary arrangements of spirituals with pieces by Bach that evoked the same emotion. It was a most interesting and compelling experiment. Following that was a recital by Paul Carroll. Next I attended a talk on developing choral sound with volunteer choirs. In the evening we gathered for a silent movie, Lon Cheney’s Phantom of the Opera, with organ accompaniment by Paul Fleckenstein—a stunning performance greeted by a standing ovation, hoots, hollers, and whistles. Wednesday began with a recital by yet another gifted collegian, the winner of the Quimby competition. The closing worship service featured new choral music commissioned for the convention and a sermon by Eileen Guenther, AGO national president, who spoke about ten powers of church music. The closing banquet featured entertainment by Mark Schweitzer, a composer, publisher, and mystery writer who put together a hilarious old-fashioned “radio drama”. The final event was a recital by Ann Elise Smoot at the chapel of Shenandoah University. I was looking especially forward to this event as she was a classmate of mine at Yale. Our paths were different—she married Martin Baker, then organist of Westminster Abbey, and moved to England launching a recital and lecturing career. It was nice to catch up with her. Often we organists are the only trained musician in our churches. This can lead to feeling isolated and alone. It is conventions like this that help us to connect with others in the field, talk shop, share in each other’s failures and successes, feel refreshed, renewed, and be reminded that we are not alone. I believe these conventions and other continuing education opportunities are absolutely essential for professional well-being and I urge all members of our chapter to consider attending future conventions.
