More than 16,000 people descended on Melbourne s Royal Exhibition Building for this year s RACV Motorclassica.

The 110 vintage and classic cars on display, valued at more than $100 million, provided an awe inspiring display that delighted enthusiasts and members of the general public alike.

The Australian International Concours d'Elegance is fast establishing its reputation nationally and internationally as Australia's premier classic car event. The 2010 exhibition recently received two nominations for the International

Event Director and classic car enthusiast Paul Mathers said: We were determined to make this year s even better than last year and we are delighted with the result. Feedback from patrons has been overwhelmingly positive and to be nominated for a prestigious international award is the icing on the cake.

The varied concours featured everything from the oldest genuine Benz in Australia, an 1896 Velo, to the 1987 Porsche 962 driven to victory at Le Mans by Derek Bell. Other show stoppers included a brace of 300SLs and E-Types, a pair of early Isotta Fraschini team cars, Holden s 1969 Hurricane concept car.

The futuristic research vehicle described as an experiment to study design trend, propulsion systems and other long range developments has been restored to its former glory as a labour of love by a dedicated group of Holden designers and engineers.

Code named RD 001; the Hurricane is a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, two-seater sports car which incorporates a remarkable array of innovative features and technology, much of it way ahead of its time.

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh have arrived at Canberra for the start of their 16th royal visit to Australia last Thursday. A lot of people got puzzled figuring out the connection between the Queen and Australia, and the reason for the Aussie s passion for England. A little did they know, The Queen of England is in fact, the Queen of Australia.

By the dawn of the 19th century, the British Empire began to collapse. The colonies gained independence and federated to form the British Commonwealth, with the ruler of England reasonably becoming the head of the Commonwealth. Among the Commonwealth nations, although some of them have chosen to become a republic and democratically elect a president as the head of state, 16 of them, including Australia, remained their acknowledgements towards the English Queen. As of the Federation of Australia on 1st January, 1901, Queen Victoria became the first ever head of state of Australia. Her successor Edward VII has replaced the Queen after a mere 22 days. In 1952. Queen Elizabeth came to the throne and was the first royalty to set foot in Australia. Her frequent visits have won the hearts and respect of Australians ever since. (Her majesty is the first queen named Elizabeth for Australia.)

Queen of Australia lives permanently outside of Australia, held the highest power but has rarely exercised it. Usually there will be an appointed governor acting on her behalf to symbolize her monarchy rule. However, in Australia we have a democratically elected prime minister and premiers to run Australia. Australia does not bear the burden of supporting the Queen's daily expenses except at times of her visits. We are only responsible for the appointed governor s expenses instead. Without being a financial burden and keeping a low degree of political interference, the symbolical monarchy rule of the Queen was gladly welcomed by the Australians.

Although in recent years, it has been a raised issue for Australia to amend the constitution and transform into a republic, cutting off the British monarchy. However the suggestion was never supported by the majority of Australians. One possible reason is that most Australians were originated from the UK, and the love for their queen still lingers in their hearts.

That being said, time is unforgiving and soon the Queen would have to pass on the throne to her successor. It remains doubtful whether this successor will receive as much support from the Australians. Moreover, with the number of Asian immigrants increasing, whether the monarchy could stand firm against the idea of a republican Australia remains questionable.

In any case, the Queen s visit in Australia has undoubtedly attracted the attention of the mass public, and has brought great excitement to this harmonious country.
