Recalling myself as a small boy decades ago and when it came to early October each year there would be waves of the national flags of the Republic of China over the squatter housing in the Tiu Keng Leng (Rennie Mill) area to celebrate the Double Ten Day, National Day of the Republic of China. On the streets were big display boards of two portraits and as told by my teacher one was the founder of our nation Dr Sun Yat-sen who had toppled the Qing Dynasty. I was very impressed by his charismatic look. More than ten years after then, the 5-star flag of the PRC came on to those streets towards the end of September every year in marking the national day of China. I was dubious on what was happening as on why two sets of flags were appearing so close to each other. In a few more years’ time, the squatters in the area had been redeveloped into housing estate and all the historic waves of flags had gone leaving only some of those 5-star flags. By now, as the area transformed into a modern suburb, a chapter of history has been done.
China is so vast and ancient with mammoth events in her history that make the recording not so straight forward. In every dynasty there would be designated officials responsible for the meticulous recording of major historical events, as reflected in the ‘Righteous Song’ of Wen Tian-xiang of the Song Dynasty. However, very often the finalization of a dynasty’s happenings would not happen until the next dynasty came in, thus there might be bias in the selection of materials and the perspective of writing. In turn there would be widespread unofficial stories in different forms to supplement the official records; it has been so difficult to reconcile the discrepancy in between.
I have just received from my friend a complement copy of the book ‘A Glimpse of History’ by Mr Tsui Tze Pei in which he attempted to reconcile and bring together historical events from various sources. I am pleased with the perseverance of Chinese in pursuing for historical precision.
My childhood unresolved puzzle as on which date is exactly our national day has reminded me of our integrity in mass media publishing – we can accommodate different viewpoints, but we cannot allow distortion of facts. I believe 10th of October was a milestone for Chinese to be set free from the old conservative ruling system as when Dr Sun proclaimed his notable ‘San-min Doctrine’ on ‘nationalism, democracy and welfare/livelihood’, that served all Chinese well. Despite all the warlords’ civil wars for so many years afterwards, Chinese invariably had come off from the miserable emporors’ era. This is still a day worthy of remembrance in our hearts.
